Jesus Calling: February 19

You are feeling weighed down by a plethora of problems, both big and small. They seem to require more and more of your attention, but you must not give in to those demands. When the difficulties in your life feel as if they're closing in on you, break free by spending quality time with Me. You need to remember who I AM in all My Power and Glory. Then, humbly bring Me your prayers and petitions. Your problems will pale when you view them in the Light of My Presence. You can learn to be joyful in Me, your Savior, even in the midst of adverse circumstances. Rely on Me, your Strength; I make your feet like the feet of a deer, enabling you to go on the heights.
Exodus 3:14
English Standard Version
God said to Moses, “I am who I am.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel, ‘I am has sent me to you.’”

Habakkuk 3:17-19
English Standard Version
Though the fig tree should not blossom,
nor fruit be on the vines,
the produce of the olive fail
and the fields yield no food,
the flock be cut off from the fold
and there be no herd in the stalls,
yet I will rejoice in the Lord;
I will take joy in the God of my salvation.
God, the Lord, is my strength;
he makes my feet like the deer's;
he makes me tread on my high places.
To the choirmaster: with stringed instruments.

Thoughts
Retreating to the Lord rarely is my first option when problems arise. Instead, I often will figure out a way on my own to feel better, sometimes this is talking about the problem, which in a way becomes gossip. I become more critical. I moan. I complain. I cry out, "woe is me." Sometimes I figure out a way to cope with it by engaging in sin, because I think and get accustomed to these acts making me feel good real quick. I am impatient often in these circumstances.

But, here I am reminded to do what Daniel did when problems came to him, he didn't change his course of action. He remained steady and continued to pray to the Lord three times a day. He stayed consistent in His walk with the Lord. I should take comfort in the words of Moses that God is "I Am" and he has been sent to me. In Habbakuk, I can be reminded that though all doesn't look right, I can rejoice in the Lord and take joy in the God of my salvation. The Lord is my strength.

My Prayer
Lord, change my habits and may I be in a habit of turning to you and continuing to retreat to You amidst all the circumstances of my life. Keep me close to You. Thank You for protecting me and raising me up. Thank you for the new life that is in You. Bring back the joy of my salvation.

  1. Thank you for sharing your heart. Usually all are guilty of taking the first option .... trying to solve our own problems. Forgive us Lord for not bringing ALL of our problems (small or large) to You FIRST.

  4. As I bring the evening to a close and look ahead to tomorrow, I once again come to Your word and to the JC devotional via the @paytonfamily blog.

As many have posted, Sarah's devo using the voice of Jesus as shown in scripture is powerful. And tomorrow's devo reading once again gets right to the heart of my current state of mind. Today, "Jesus" says, "your problems will pale when you view them in the Light of My Presence."

And thankfully we in this community have prayed for His right hand, the shaft of golden light, and His peace to help us through the challenges that lay ahead of us TODAY. Father, I offer this all to you. Amen. #prayer

  6. Help rid me of impatience, Lord...with myself, others, circumstances. This time of year I seem to get stuck in that realm of all I need to do and no energy or desire to do anything but hibernate. Everything seems as dull as the sky that never brightens up. So, in spite of that, I will rejoice in the Lord. Give it to Him. Trust He will be there to supply all I need - so much, that I will have an abundance to give.

  7. In everything give thanks. Lord thank you for your grace and your favor. Thank you for blessing us with the gift of being a part of 'today.' Thank you for your abundance in not only my and my daughter's life but so many others that we know and some that we do not. Thank you for others including us in their daily prayers. Thank you for a generational family of prayer warriors. Thank you for touching lives to show compassion to others. God is love and love is God.

  10. My devotion this AM was entitled, "Recognizing the Gift". From that time of reflection and meditation I now come to Jesus Calling and a few moments with you, my dear brothers and sisters in Christ. The emphasis of the devotion for the day was seeing each and every person as created in the image of God and thus deserving respect and reverence over and above the impact they have on my life. If I look closely at that thought, I find that I frequently am responding to persons according to "if I like them or not". Those I like, I babble on and on to derive more pleasure from the relationship; for those I don't like, I try to avoid them and even if I can't, I try to be as disengaged as possible. The problem within my heart is the sinful element that is stuck in judgement mode and judges all things according to my likes or dislikes. As I read Jesus Calling today, I see I can do the same thing in judging my circumstances, do I like them or do I see them as problems. If I don't like my circumstances and they are labeled as problems, I am likely to respond in ways that are not of God as Chris mentioned above in his commentary. Jesus Calling encourages me to proceed in confidence in His ever present love and in so doing, I render all circumstances as neutral leaving me free to do what is most important in His will and that is to show love and compassion to whoever it is He has brought me into contact with in the moment. Evagrius, one of the Desert Fathers from the 300's, encouraged those under his leadership to take an attitude of apathia (from which you can see we derive the word apathy). To Evagrius, a spirit of apathia was one in which we remain neutral in our feelings concerning our circumstances (not judging them by whether we like them or not) so we can be open to the leading of the Spirit. When I have drawn upon His grace and assumed such a posture, I have had blessed experiences with whomever I am in contact. It is only a challenging perspective because I have so ingrained within my soul this attitude of "I like it/I don't like it". But He will enable me to do better today than yesterday, but not as good as tomorrow. The journey goes on. God be with you.

  12. Today I recognize once again, I must Trust our Lord and savior with all our heart and mind and and spirit. This trust rest only on faith which cannot be seen by site. And when we are going through such adversity such pain such Affliction indeed it is very difficult. But I say it's difficult because we make it difficult. Today I needed a reminder how Sovereign God is and that his plans for me are indeed good. And that doesn't mean all things that come my way or going to be good. It means that these afflictions and trials no matter how painful will turn into good in the end. We must believe that we must believe that. As I walk through this very very long valley I still hold my savior's hand. I cry out to him to take my pain. I cry out to him to guide the surgeon's hands today. I cry out to him to continue to comfort me and bring me peace. I would be nothing without him I could do nothing without him. I trust you Jesus trusted with all my heart mind and soul

  15. I am so thankful to be in my home (disrupted as it is with the kitchen remodel), to be sipping coffee, reading this post. Yesterday, was a day of many firsts for me and I am thankful to say that God, was indeed, with me every step of the way.
I got home almost 12 hours after I left yesterday morning and I was so tired, I was in bed, asleep before 9:30. It was one of those days, that I've had often but never seem to want to repeat. As I reflected on it while driving home, I could see where God had gone before me, just as He promised. He did hold my hand (I got separated from my group and lost an a huge campus where all of the buildings looked alike!); He navigated me through an accident on the highway and I still arrived on time; He gave me the Words to share my heart (His heart in the case of some conversations) and I came home, one tired woman, reminded that I am 30-40 years older than the rest of my team. It was humbling (embarrassing in some cases) and invigorating in others. Many are just starting their lives, their families, their careers; I am thinking about retirement (a lot lately!).
When I got home, I told my Hub I could not possibly get back in that car to go out to dinner, yet after talking and catching up, I felt renewed and we did. He is the one who I can share my heart with and know I'm understood.
As I read this morning, caught up on all of the prayers and reflected, the last line summed up my last 24 hours, "Rely on Me, your Strength; I make your feet like the feet of a deer, enabling you to go on the heights."
We know very little about what will happen in the next hour, day, month. But, we know our final destination. We know we have a Heavenly Father who so loved he gave His only begotten Son, so that WE could be called the Sons of God. I am thankful and ready for another day of unknowns, because He knows and will prepare me. He will be holding my hand.
Love and Blessings to each of you.

    2. Thanks for your post, Norah. It is an encouraged spiritual practice at the end of the day, to do a examination of the day in all that happened and how we responded. To look back and see our Lord was faithful constantly (as you did above) and give thanks. But also to look at our responses to people and circumstances, to ask forgiveness where we were less than loving of God and others (this is not for the purpose of beating ourselves up but for receiving His merciful love) and to see the times the Spirit was allowed to lead and there were blessings which leads to humbly giving thanks for privilege of being used to bless others and bring glory to God. When this exercise is completed, I find I quickly fall asleep and get a good night's rest. (So glad for His giving you sufficient physical recovery that you could have dinner with your husband, so important for wholeness.) God be with you.

He is everything to us. And He even knows when we need our rest. No matter our age He renews us like the eagles. We are like a green tree planted by the rivers of water which brings forth fruit in our season. Whatsoever we do shall prosper and our leaf shall not wither.

  17. It is good to spend a few minutes with you, my sisters and brothers in Christ. May I share with you from my time of meditation and contemplation this AM?

An interesting miracle is recorded in Mark 8:22-26. A blind man is brought to Jesus for healing. Jesus takes him aside, applies His saliva to his eyes (it was believed that saliva had a medicinal effect, certainly Jesus' saliva would!). The man opens his eyes but does not see clearly. Jesus repeats the process and the second time the man's vision becomes 20/20. The natural question that would come to mind is 'why didn't it work the first time'? Did Jesus do something wrong? (Heaven forbid!) The regaining of sight is often used in a figurative sense to refer to the acquiring of knowledge. Jesus does not have a problem here; as is always the case, the problem rests with our fallen nature. When we allow Jesus to come into our life, do we understand everything clearly all at once? Hardly. The acquiring of godly knowledge which in time leads to heavenly wisdom is a process. We need Jesus to 'spit into our understanding' on a regular basis until we see clearly. Thus the constant encouragement in our readings to retreat to Him often and frequently for His healing touch. A famous prayer you are familiar with was first spoken by Richard of Chichester, put to music in Godspell and sung by several recording artists, "Day by Day". It is the essence of what this miracle teaches us. Our coming to wholeness in our understanding is a process not an instant occurrence. Beware of ever thinking you know it all in your understanding of scripture. The Pharisees did and you know where that left them. As Richard of Chichester's prayer says, "Day by day, to see Thee more clearly, to love Thee more dearly, and to follow Thee more nearly." Do you see the process here? From the head to the heart to the way we live. No, in this miracle, Jesus got it right, may we allow Him to make us more right day by day. Have a righter day! With love, Bob.

    2. This is so good, Bob. I also read this passage this morning from an email that I received from Bishop Robert Barron. If I may...

Friends, after Jesus heals the blind man in today’s Gospel, he tells him, "Do not even go into the village."

Now, blindness is a biblical image for lack of spiritual sight, the inability to see things as they are. One of the effects of the fall was a loss of holiness—seeing with the eyes of Christ, appreciating the world as a participation in the creative energy of God. All of us sinners, to varying degrees, are blind to this metaphysics of creation and tend to see the world from the standpoint of the self-elevating ego.

One of the origins of this spiritual debility is too much time in the village. Jesus the healer and judge has to lead us blind people out of the city and give us sight—and then strictly enjoin us not to return to the blinding ways of the village.

We unfortunate village dwellers must, through the power of Christ, put on the mind of Christ. And then we must live in a new town, the community of love and justice that is the Church. It is this city of vision that effectively challenges (and judges) the enduring power of the blinding society.

    3. Thank you, Suzanne R., for adding further thoughts to the Mark passage this AM, a perspective that expands the passage even further. Your sharing affirms the words of Thomas Aquinas: "Unless we share our faith in God with each other, none of us will ever know God." Be blessed!

    4. An awesome teaching and song dear Bob! Yes and to be spiritually blind is worse than being physically blind. I need to always see Him more clearly.
Seeing clearly through God’s eyes of love also takes time and much effort. We must stop judging others and share His perfect love and message of hope with them. We are so imperfect but we must trust that God is improving us and molding us to His Image a little at a time. It is a gradual process. But we have long suffering to help us wait on Him to add brush strokes to His masterpiece. We won’t be finished till we see Him clearly in the Glory Land.
Father, Thank You for giving me Clearer Vision to see above all the worldly glitter to those precious things from above which endure.

  18. Oh Lord, I gave thanks to You this morning with a grateful heart and invite Your Spirit to order my steps this day to walk in Your ways and not mine. May I be a beacon of light for You today and glory Your Holy name.

It's easy to complain and tell God, ourselves and others about our troubles, but what we should get in the habit of doing, is telling our troubles/problems how Great and Big our God is and search for His promises and hold onto them. There are so many scriptures available for us during hard times and dark periods and all the times!

Proverbs 18:10 –“The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe”.

Philippians 4:6- “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God”.

Isaiah 12:2-“Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The Lord, the Lord, is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation”.

2 Timothy 1:7- “For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline”.

These Bible verses are a reminder to us that through faith in Christ we are given a spirit of power, love and discipline, and for that reason we have nothing to fear. We can hold onto his promises and be confident that he’ll see us through even the darkest days of our lives. We are told to call on Jesus Christ, and He will hear us and give us strength, hope and a grace sufficient to carry us through all circumstances. He will be our ever present help when we’re in need, and He will give us a peace that passes all our understanding. This should be extremely encouraging to all believers.

As we go through this day, let us remember the great “I AM” in all of His Glory and Power and trust Him to make our ‘feet like the feet of a deer, enabling us to go on our high places’.

Remain blessed and fearless in the Lord!

  25. Loving Father, As You bless me each morning with the gift of life, I thank You and trust You to carry me throughout the day, and when night falls, may I always drop on my knees to praise and thank You for walking with me. I am always in need of YOU, the great I AM and blessed that You meet the needs and petitions of my heart according to Your glorious riches in Christ Jesus.
When situatuons in my life seems impossible, please give me the feet to walk the path that You put before me each day and take me through the high and rugged places holding onto You and not letting go. Teach me to walk in spiritual freedom and joy regardless of my circumstances, so that I can find the fullest measure of joy in You, every blessed day! In Jesus’ name I pray.

“The Lord God is my strength [my source of courage, my invincible army]; He has made my feet [steady and sure] like hinds’ feet and makes me walk [forward with spiritual confidence] on my high places [of challenge and responsibility]” Habakkuk 3:19.

Thanking God for Pastor Louie’s clean bill of health and Miss Pat’s recovery! We serve a mighty great God! Glory, praise, and thanksgiving to His Holy name!

Unknown (02/18/2021 8:10am) I stand in prayer for your husband’s healing from diverticulitis and for provisions as you prepare to retire. God is able, keep trusting!

  28. Thank you all for the random here and there mentions in posts unrelated to me and included in prayers for others... your prayers have been "powerful and effective". Head to Emory for initial tests and briefings on the process Sunday afternoon. Daughter the RN will assist and can attend the meetings through Tuesday afternoon. They will do a genetic and total blood and bone marrow biopsy to determine how effective my chemo program really was. Praying for excellent response bloodwork here at home oncologist to show similarly or better at Emory.

Off all chemo and immunotherapy now for several days, and I can absolutely tell you, it's obvious that 4 cycles is a lot of drugs!! I feel so much better. Wow, didn't know how lousy I felt. So glad the prayers and positivity masked reality! Did not escape many side effects but almost all were muted and manageable in the 4th month. No nausea or gasteo issues was the biggest surprise and blessing.

Will do an update mid-next week. ** THANK YOU JEANNE AND ALL THE JC WARRIORS. ** praying for each need here as well and am humbled by your kindness and agape in Christ. AMEN.

  42. The central focus of today's Devo is: "You need to remember who I AM in all My Power and Glory. " AWESOME!!!
Everything in our lives comes out of who God IS. Everything that exists comes out of who God is.
We need to remember who God is.
    The One True Living God.
    How do we know God?
Long story short; we only know Him because He revealed Himself to us.

For me the is only one word that comes close to describing HIM: "AWESOME"!
Our God is AWESOME! And...there is no other!
As we ponder, meditate on the revealed truths of God and the Scriptures below, lift your eyes from the weight of any problems and difficulties you may have, and onto your Maker, your Savior, your Redeemer, your Shield, your King, your Lord, your AWESOME GOD.

He is the only Sovereign (1 Tim. 1:17; 6:15).
He looks after His creation (Psalm 104:3-32).
His holiness demands exclusive worship (Joshua 24:19).
No one else is holy like He is (1 Samuel 2:2).
As the most holy One, He deserves constant honor (Revelation 4:8).
He is the Truth (John 14:6).
He follows through on His promises (Numbers 11:22-23; 31-34).
He doesn’t lie but keeps His word (Numbers 23:19).
He is full of grace and truth (John 1:14).
His Spirit guides believers into all truth (John 16:13).
True freedom comes from abiding in God’s truth (John 8:31-32).

Heaven is LOUD with praise to our Awesome God.
In Revelation 4:5 we read: " From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings and peals of thunder". Thunder from the lightening flash is not quiet!
The only place we read of silence in Heaven is in Revelation 8:1: " When he opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour."

    2 Corinthians 1:3-7
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For as we share abundantly in Christ’s sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too. If we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; and if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which you experience when you patiently endure the same sufferings that we suffer. Our hope for you is unshaken, for we know that as you share in our sufferings, you will also share in our comfort.”

  54. Amen my dear sisters! I’m so thankful to Chris, the Payton family, Sarah, and our great God for this sweet meeting place and refuge founded on Jesus, our Cornerstone. God and His Spirit led us here to share His Word and message of salvation, to worship Him together, and to encourage each other in the Lord. We are a true family bound together by His Word, His Love, and Prayer. We are His children and we are all so blessed. Hallelujah!

    1. Yes The Revival is part of God's Plan to open up the eyes and hearts of those who are sleepwalking through their life. They don't realize Jesus is alive and God's promises are true. We must love like He loves without judgment. We must love and care for our enemies. We must get out of our comfort zones and follow Him even when it is difficult. Love right back to you dear Sister!
