Jesus Calling: January 22

STRIVE TO TRUST ME in more and more areas of your life. Anything that tends to make you anxious is a growth opportunity. Instead of running away from these challenges, embrace them, eager to gain all the blessings I have hidden in the difficulties. If you believe that I am sovereign over every aspect of your life, it is possible to trust Me in all situations. Don't waste energy regretting the way things are or thinking about what might have been. Start at the present moment--accepting things exactly as they are--and search for My way in the midst of those circumstances.
Trust is like a staff you can lean on, as you journey uphill with Me. If you are trusting in Me consistently, the staff will bear as much of your weight as needed. Lean on, trust, and be confident in Me with all your heart and mind.
Psalm 52:8
English Standard Version
But I am like a green olive tree
    in the house of God.
I trust in the steadfast love of God
    forever and ever.
Proverbs 3:5-6
Amplified Version

Trust in and rely confidently on the Lord with all your heart
And do not rely on your own insight or understanding.

In all your ways know and acknowledge and recognize Him,
And He will make your paths straight and smooth [removing obstacles that block your way].

My Prayer
Lord, so many times in my life you are there, simply saying "I got this." In turn, all that I need to do is trust You. You remind me to not worry, but instead pray about everything and you are teaching me that when I pray it is turning the control over to you. Why is it that prayer is too often the last thing I do when faced with a difficult situation? It's like I try to solve the problem my way and then when I can't, I say, "Well, I guess God is going to have to care of this." Lord, forgive me for putting you second or third or even last. I want to put you first, instead.

When I pray it is often simply asking to remove something in my life making me anxious, and yet you remind me that these are the instances when I often grow the most and even experience great blessings. My problem Lord, I admit, is that I don't trust you in every aspect of my life; too often, it is me that is saying "I got this." But, yes, it is possible to trust You in all situations.

Yet Lord, as Daniel Amos sang, don't let me take another trip down memory lane. Instead, I can start afresh and anew each day. I can pray, "Thank you for a new day." I can begin again. I can start at the present moment.

I really do want to trust in You Lord with all my heart and not lean on my own understanding. In all my ways I want to acknowledge You for the promise is real that you will remove obstacles in my life as I do and keep me on a straight path.

  1. Ronald Reagan famously said when negotiating nuclear disarmament, "Trust but verify." What isn't widely known is that he was using an old Russian proverb to force Gorbachev and the Soviets to yield to reasonable and logical demands of the USA team!

But with God, the Jewish proverb above says that He simply wants: "TRUST!" We know that Jesus trusted perfectly so it is not surprising that we will fall short. We want to trust what we see, what others say, what we want... but all we can do is trust Him to help us no matter the circumstances, good or bad, that later today will bring. Trust. simple word - difficult task. Pray for you and me to trust a little more today than yesterday - just a small step will be progress. Amen

    1. 2020 addendum. Recently read an old Irish proverb, grounded in Scripture I'm sure, that may help with today's JC devo:

"When mistrust comes in, loves goes out."

Our love, thus our faith, in God is diminished when we don't trust Him in all parts of our life. But His love for us is UN-diminished and He will strengthen us in the rough paths if we simply trust He will get us through them. Praying for all here to TRUST in The Lord! Amen.

    3. MadFox, I just shared that quote with a dear sister in Christ whose husband has dementia. She said she feels as if she is in a 'long season of goodbye,' and this was not the way either of them expected to live out their golden years. Please, JC Prayer Warriors, pray for my dear friend. I continue to pray for a miracle; she just wants to be kind and patient. Whichever happens, God has this.
" Don't waste energy regretting the way things are or thinking about what might have been. Start at the present moment--accepting things exactly as they are--and search for My way in the midst of those circumstances." So simple, yet so hard when you are in the thick of it.

    4. Thanks for the post, Madfox. Well stated. I couldn't help but think on the Reagan quote you shared, "Trust but verify." For verification, I go to the table to receive communion.

Norah, I lift up your friend in prayer. That is the down side of the benefits of modern medicine that enable us to stay healthy longer, sometimes we outlive our mental capacities. We pray for all who must walk that long good-bye. May God be with her (and He is!).

    5. Why what who. All things we asked ourselves while caring for mom. My husbands mother lived with us the last year and a half of her life. She was a wonderful mother, mother in law, and grandmother. We took care of her about 2.5 years mom had alzheimer as did her father. She was a beautiful healthy women and then her brain started shutting down. She had seen many hard days losing loved ones....daughter,dad,husband,brother,step-dad,sister and brother in law. The last 3 in like a 3 year period. At first I thought stress was causing her fog. But as it sped up we could see it was more. Dr started her meds and she believed she would get better. As she started losing hope for healing the process became very sad and I started asking all those questions. I re assured my self that God understood why I was asking (and I'm sure he did) but what I didn't see was as each day passed I focused more and more on those questions. The anger of not understanding the why of what was happening, the questions of what exactly (they can only be sure if an autopsy is done) and who might be next was the devils way of stressing me out. Questions are normal and healthy for a short time they even brought me closer to God. But then they fuel doubt, anger and confusion. We will never understand the why bad things happen. We know the God that created us will never leave we can trust he will help us through. I read today's devotionals and started writing. The whole time thinking I wish I had seen this before. Then I would have been able to stress less and enjoy my time with mom more. But I had seen it before. I read these devotionals every morning. Our distractions cause us to not see what God puts right in front of us. Norah I will be praying for your friend but I had to thank you for sharing it is to late for me to use your post to enjoy mom now but prayerfully it will help me to not question God so long in the future. Thank you JS

    7. Thank you, Dear JS. My friend was over tonight, and she has regained her peace, for the moment. God love her...she has 11 children - all responsible, working, serving (in Military, FBI, Social Work. Yet she has one, still at home - a Sr. in HS. And she sees the 'every day,' which is what I pray about and ask prayers for. The repeated questions, the oddities that cause disruption in the family. My friend has been a Caregiver for Alzheimer's patients her whole life. It was so easy for her to be patient and kind to them, and yet, here she is facing it with her husband and she finds herself short-tempered and impatient. She ends up hating herself, and we, her friends, every Monday night, pray for her and remind her that it is OK. It will be OK. So hard. Thank you for sharing your plight and knowing what we're going through, and praying for my dear friend. She WILL be OK. She has God in Christ in her, as does her dear husband. They know, 'the rest of the story.' God Bless you, JS! And, Thank You, Bob - you are right - it is the price we pay for long life. I think of the movie, The Green Mile. UGH! He watched all of his loved ones die. We lost a good man, last Sat. Head on crash; his wife is in a coma. Please pray for Connie. She lost her brother last month, and now a husband. Oh, I pray for calm hearts. As my dear friend, Debbie, goes into surgery tomorrow. Please JC Prayer Warriors, pray for her. She is needed in our lives...her kids, her grandkids. Sigh. Heading to bed - God is on the Night Watch!

I too am praying for your friend and her husband. It is such an awful disease. I pray that God will bless them during this difficult time in their lives. I pray that as the disease progresses that your friend will find the strength to get through every day. I am grateful for this group and the prayers that are given no matter the circumstances. God bless you all.

  10. Praying for acceptance in all circumstances. Acceptance is the beginning of moving forward. How easy it is to stay frozen in time. Only by intentionally every day giving your circumstances to Jesus and trusting Him to walk you thru the valley can you find real assurance and the peace that is attached to the heavenly promise. Today my promise is to intentionally place the name of Jesus to "I got this" Psalm 32:7-8 You are my hiding place;you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.

  14. I am blessed to be in Your Presence this day, dear Lord and thankful that my 'hope is built on nothing less, but Jesus' blood and righteousness'.
My grateful heart rejoice with praise and thanksgiving to Your Holy name.

This morning, I am reminded to trust in the Lord with all my heart and lean not on my own understanding. I take this to mean, I can't depend on me and yes, it is true and if I can't depend on me, I am sure I certainly can't depend on man.
We are told that trust should be earned, but Proverbs 3:5 tells me that trusting in the Lord is exactly where we should start! The majority of us if not all, have been disappointed one way or the other, either depending on ourselves or others.
Living the life God has called us to means unlearning that lesson because we are meant to rest in God's understanding. It can be hard sometimes trusting in God, especially when we are faced with problems after problems and what seems to be unanswered prayers etc..,but regardless, we must consciously lay aside our own plans and expectations and surrender to HIS plans. Cry out to Him to show that dependence (Prob. 3:6- "In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight").
When we pray, we are showing God that His ways are higher than ours. We are telling Him that we are leaving all our burdens in His capable hands. Psalm 55:17 tells us that God hears us: "Evening, morning, and noon I cry out in distress and He hears my voice". Now that's a blessed assurance!

Father, thank You for Your words that will never go back to You void, may they be food to our souls as we hand over our lives to You in total TRUST, knowing that You are able to lead us. Help us to yield to the voice of the Holy Spirit, check ourselves by Your words, put You first place in our lives and rest in Your love. I pray this for all, in Jesus name.

  16. Week of Prayer for Christian Unity - Day Five. From the scripture for the week (Acts 27:18-28:10) vs. 33-36: Just before daybreak, Paul urged all of them to take some food, saying, 'Today is the fourteenth day that you have been in suspense and remaining without food, having eaten nothing. Therefore I urge you to take some food, for it will help you survive; for none of you will lose a hair from your heads.' After he had said this, he took bread; and giving thanks to God in the presence of all, he broke it and began to eat. Then all of them were encouraged and took food for themselves.

All the people on the ship, because of their feeling of hopelessness, and stopped eating. (Human nature has a tendency to stop doing the things that are good for the self when hopelessness sets in.) Paul, in his hopefulness, encourages them to eat. As he is having an impact on them, they are willing to do so. So Paul takes bread, gives thanks to God, breaks it. distributes it, and they eat to gain strength.

The above story can't help but draw one's attention to the Eucharist or Lord's Supper. It is the sacrament in which God gives us hope and spiritual strength. All of us here reading this blog come with different understandings of the bread and the wine on the alter/table. It is not most important what you understand, it matters most that it serves its purpose of reminding each of us of the love of God which gives us hope and strength in our lives. If too much time is spent on the theology of the sacrament, the purpose will be missed. Once, I learned a lesson when I was serving communion. When I gave the elements to one elder, she crossed herself. I thought to myself, I have the responsibility to offer communion in the manner which my denomination believes, but how you receive it is a matter of your relationship with God. (Thank you, Holy Spirit for teaching me that at the Lord's table.)

I am so blessed by this blog and the support and encouragement you all give to one another and me. The one thing this blog cannot do is enable us to break bread together thus we each need a church. I am looking forward to doing that with you when Jesus serves us in His Kingdom and we can finally embrace each other. God be with you.

    6. Everytime I read, Revelations 7, I think of our JC Family's Heavenly meetup.
9 After this I saw a vast crowd, too great to count, from all nations and provinces and languages, standing in front of the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white, with palm branches in their hands. 10 And they were shouting with a mighty shout, “Salvation comes from our God upon the throne, and from the Lamb.”
11 And now all the angels were crowding around the throne and around the Elders and the four Living Beings, and falling face down before the throne and worshiping God. 12 “Amen!” they said. “Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honor, and power, and might, be to our God forever and forever. Amen!”

13 Then one of the twenty-four Elders asked me, “Do you know who these are, who are clothed in white, and where they come from?”

14 “No, sir,” I replied. “Please tell me.”

“These are the ones coming out of the Great Tribulation,” he said; “they washed their robes and whitened them by the blood of the Lamb. 15 That is why they are here before the throne of God, serving him day and night in his temple. The one sitting on the throne will shelter them; 16 they will never be hungry again, nor thirsty, and they will be fully protected from the scorching noontime heat. 17 For the Lamb standing in front of the throne[a] will feed them and be their Shepherd and lead them to the springs of the Water of Life. And God will wipe their tears away.”
Commentary: Some of us may ask St. Peter where we can find our JC Family in Heaven. I imagine St Peter saying. Just Listen for and go toward the singingness, dancingness, hallelujahingness, praisingness, joyousness, huggingness, thankingness, sounds. That would be them!

  20. JOINING INTO WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY, 2021
Day 5, Letting oneself be transformed by the Word: “You have already been pruned by the word...” (John 15:3)
    Scripture
Deuteronomy 30:11-20, The word of God is very close to you
    Matthew 5:1-12, Blessed are you

    Meditation
The Word of God is very close to us. It is a blessing and a promise of happiness. If we open our hearts, God speaks to us and patiently transforms that which is dying in us. God removes that which prevents the growth of real life, just as the vine grower prunes the vine.

Regularly meditating on a biblical text, alone or in a group, changes our outlook. Many Christians pray the Beatitudes every day. The Beatitudes reveal to us a happiness that is hidden in that which is unfulfilled, a happiness that lies beyond suffering: blessed are those who, touched by the Spirit, no longer hold back their tears but let them flow and thus receive consolation. As they discover the wellspring hidden within their inner landscape, the hunger for justice, and the thirst to engage with others for a world of peace, grows in them.

We are constantly called to renew our commitment to life, through our thoughts and actions. There are times when we already taste, here and now, the blessing that will be fulfilled at the end of time.

    Prayer
Blessed are you, God our Father, for the gift of your word in Holy Scripture. Blessed are you for its transforming power. Help us to choose life and guide us by your Spirit, so that we can experience the happiness which you want so much to share with us. Amen.

In a time that circumstances require 'distancing' it is imperative that we long for unity so when the masks come off, hugs are given again, and we gather for worship, we will appreciate the unity we are called to and make greater effort to seek it as Jesus wished when He prayed, "Father, may they be one as You and I are one, so the world may know You sent me." Oh, I have days I lose the fight
Try my best but just don’t get it right
      Well I talk a talk that I don’t walk
And miss the moments right before my eyes

Somebody with a hurt that I could have helped
Somebody with a hand that I could have held
When I just can’t see past myself
      Oh Lord, help me be...
A little more like mercy, a little more like grace
A little more like kindness, goodness, love, and faith
A little more like patience, a little more like peace
A little more like Jesus...a little less like me

Yeah, there’s no denying I have changed
‘Cause I’ve been saved from who I used to be
But even at my best, I must confess
I still need help to see the way You see...

A little more like Jesus, a little less like me

Oh, I want to feed the beggar on the street
Love to be your hands and feet
      Freely give what I receive
      Lord, help me be
I want a friendship first above all else
      Love my neighbor as myself
In the moments no one sees
      Lord, help me be
      One, two, three...

A little more like mercy, a little more like grace
A little more like kindness, goodness, love, and faith
A little more like patience, a little more like peace
A little more like Jesus, oh, a little less like me
A little more of living everything I preach
A little more like Jesus, a little less like me
Oh, a little less like me

STRIVE TO TRUST ME in more and more areas of your life.
Anything that tends to make you anxious is a growth opportunity. Instead of running away from these challenges, embrace them, eager to gain all the blessings I have hidden in the difficulties.
If you believe that I AM Sovereign over every aspect of your life, it is possible to trust Me in all situations.
Don't waste energy regretting the way things are or thinking about what might have been.
Start at the present moment--accepting things exactly as they are--and search for My way in the midst of those circumstances.

      Malachi 3:10
Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so that there will be food enough in My Temple; when you do, then I will open up The Windows of Heaven for you and I Will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have room enough to take it all in! “Try it! Let Me prove it to you!

  27. While Sitting on the grass at a crowded Jazzfest, a little girl about 3 years old was walking around hugging people. Her Father was following behind her saying, I hope you don't mind. She doesn't understand that some people may not want a hug. Two of the things that little girl taught:
    1. HMMM! The Little Girl did NOT rely on her own understanding; she trusted Jesus' WORDS to LOVE ONE ANOTHER and actually lived out His Words by giving out loving hugs on His Behalf!
    2. AHHA! Now I know why Jesus tells us to be more like little children.
Without relying on my own understanding, I am sending out a great big virtual loving, squeezing bear hug to all of you.

  33. I want to follow God, but His plan just doesn’t make sense.

It’s okay if we don’t understand the big picture plan God has for us right now. Chose to trust God to lead you on the path.

Take the first step. He will give the next step, then the next one, and then the next. Eventually, we’ll get to the place He wants us to be. And one day it will all make sense.

My prayer for all of us is, we will take that first step and allow God to direct our paths. All it takes is trusting God even when it doesn’t make sense.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Amen dear Min. You spoke the truth. We must go forward holding His unchanging Hand. We must give Him the reins of our lives and not yank them back. He can lead us way better than we can lead ourselves.
After we take that first step forward, He has already prepared the second and the third. May He lead us like a bright Neon sign to the path that leads to glory, joy, love, comfort and fulfillment in Him. He has called us all for a purpose. Sometimes we are called to put our whole life aside because someone needs us. I sure do trust in His guidance and direction. I may not understand it but I trust Him. Thank You Jesus!

  42. God’s Peace can rule in any situation. But we must be aware of it. His sweet peace is always there to cover anxiety and worry. Coming to Him with gratitude and praise especially through the hard times shows Him we trust in His mercy and promises. You just can’t be worried while you’re thanking Him for your blessings no matter the circumstances. Staying in His Presence during the storms is what He wants us to do. He never lets go of our hand but we let go of His.
I loved this from today’s devotion:

  47. Lord I ask for your help, in trusting you, and letting go of the outcome. Help me to have faith. I remember asking you to help me draw closer to you. It's crazy to me how I can even find myself having to ask for that help. I remember how clearly you spoke to me, saying " trust me when it seems impossible that things will work out. That is faith". I heard you and was able cease fighting for control of my life. How, after that profound moment in my life could my trust in you still falter? As I face my giants I will trust you Lord. I will continue, with your help and guidance to clear away the wreckage of my past so that I can be most useful to you. WHATEVER THAT MEANS!! Amen

  50. I loved today’s devotion. I’m trusting in the Lord to guide me through every day. I call out to Him. He’s there! I lean on Him so many times. He waits for my voice as I wait for His guidance. He often says: Stay with me and all will be well. He shows me His beauty when I have a moment to gaze out the window. Yesterday the rosy sun painted the bare branches the most beautiful shade of peach. I stood there smiling and thanked Him for that special gift. I try to lift my mom and point out reasons to be thankful. I try to give her the things that make her happy. I made her French toast last night and bacon for her breakfast today. May God give her an appetite. We all trust in Him because He is so good and faithful. He lights our days and covers us with peace. His strength is ours when we feel weak. I’m fighting this cold and I know He’s fighting it with me. I’m carefully washing my hands so many times. God knows all this and He says not to worry. This will pass. I sure do believe Him. My mom is doing a bit better. She ate her breakfast and her blood pressure was good. We do Wordle together. She’s very sharp, thank God. She didn’t want my chicken soup. She wanted chicken egg drop soup so I beat an egg and cooked it in my soup and she loved it. God is my helper and He makes everything better. We don’t understand His Ways but He sure understands ours.

    1 Corinthians 2:10–11
But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.
