Jesus Calling: July 1

I am Life and Light in abundance. As you spend time "soaking" in My Presence, you are energized and lightened. Through communing with Me, you transfer your heavy burdens to My strong shoulders. By gazing at Me, you gain My perspective on your life. This time alone with Me is essential for unscrambling your thoughts and smoothing out the day before you.
     Be willing to fight for this precious time with Me. Opposition comes in many forms: your own desire to linger in bed; the evil one's determination to distract you from Me; the pressure of family, friends, and your own inner critic to spend your time more productively. As you grow in your desire to please Me above all else, you gain strength to resist these opponents. Delight yourself in Me, for I am the deepest Desire of your heart.

Psalm 48:9
English Standard Version

We have thought on your steadfast love, O God,
    in the midst of your temple.

Deuteronomy 33:12
English Standard Version

Of Benjamin he said,
“The beloved of the Lord dwells in safety.
The High God surrounds him all day long,
    and dwells between his shoulders.

Psalm 37:4
English Standard Version

Delight yourself in the Lord,
    and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Jesus Calling: June 30

I am the Truth: the One who came to set you free. As the Holy Spirit controls your mind and actions more fully, you become free in Me. You are increasingly released to become the one I created you to be. This is a work that I do in you as you yield to My Spirit. I can do My best handiwork when you sit in the stillness of My Presence, focusing your entire being on Me.
     Let My thoughts burst freely upon your consciousness, stimulating abundant Life. I am the Way and the Truth and the Life. As you follow Me, I lead you along paths of newness: ways you have never imagined. Don't worry about what is on the road up ahead. I want you to find your security in knowing Me, the One who died to set you free.

John 8:32
English Standard Version

and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.

Philippians 2:13
English Standard Version

for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.

John 14:6
English Standard Version

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

Jesus Calling: June 29

As you get out of bed in the morning, be aware of My Presence with you. You may not be thinking clearly yet, but I am. Your early morning thoughts tend to be anxious ones until you get connected with Me. Invite Me into your thoughts by whispering My Name. Suddenly your day brightens and feels more user-friendly. You cannot dread a day that is vibrant with My Presence.
     You gain confidence through knowing that I am with you--that you face nothing alone. Anxiety stems from asking the wrong question: "If such and such happens, can I handle it?" The true question is not whether you can cope with whatever happens, but whether you and I together can handle anything that occurs. I is this you-and-I-together factor that gives you confidence to face the day cheerfully.

Psalm 5:3
English Standard Version

O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice;
    in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch.

Verse thoughts
In the midst of distress, I petition the Lord. In the midst of distress, I trust in the Lord's protection. I need to re-focus my thoughts on the Lord and His promises and not focus on the words of the world and the worries of life.

Psalm 63:1
New King James Version

O God, You are my God;
Early will I seek You;
My soul thirsts for You;
My flesh longs for You
In a dry and thirsty land
Where there is no water.

Verse thoughts
God is my protection. I come to You completely, with my whole being, in the same way that I would want water in a barren desert, is how I want to be quenched by You.

Philippians 4:13
English Standard Version

I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

Verse thoughts
When I rely on Christ's power (in Me) and follow His example, then and only then, am I able to face all circumstances with contentment.

My Prayer
Lord, I want to roll out of bed with my first thoughts being trusting You with my day and the things that I have to experience. It is true that I go to worry and anxiety too quickly. I want to run to Your arms and let you carry me.

Jesus Calling: June 28

Taste and see that I am good. This command contains an invitation to experience My living Presence. It also contains a promise. The more you experience Me, the more convinced you become of My goodness. This knowledge is essential to your faith-walk. When adversities strike, the human instinct is to doubt My goodness. My ways are mysterious, even to those who know Me intimately. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways and thoughts higher than your ways and thoughts. Do not try to fathom my ways. Instead, spend time enjoying Me and experiencing My goodness.
Psalm 34:8
English Standard Version

Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good!
    Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!

Isaiah 55:8-9
English Standard Version

For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
    neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
    so are my ways higher than your ways
    and my thoughts than your thoughts.

My Prayer
Lord, you are kind, gracious, and merciful to all your people. You are good. You are so very good. Not a day goes by that I understand why you would save a wretched man like me. You have given me peace now and for all eternity. Your thoughts are not my thoughts. Your ways are not ways. I always am wanting my way instead of simply loving you Jesus always in all things. I wallow back and forth based upon good things happening to me or not. Forgive me for wrapping up my place with you each day based upon my circumstances. I watch men all the time try to figure out the beginning from the end, denying You often or stating that You are not even real. Thank you for making yourself so real to me. Help this world see You for who You really are. We've grown into a world in which opinions from everyone are so prevalent, to the point that beholding You as the truth is absent at times. But, I want to lift you up and not simply in this quiet moment, but give me the courage and confidence each day to shout Your name before people. As opportunities present themselves, help me to be a witness for You. Lord, I don't want my days to be about me and mapping out how my way will always be full of comfort, ease and safety. I want instead to praise Your name and accept whatever that comes, even if it is opposition, suffering, or death, because I know I'm with you forever. I want to hide myself in You.

Jesus Calling: June 27

Rest with Me a while. You have journeyed up a steep, rugged path in recent days. The way ahead is shrouded in uncertainty. Look neither behind you nor before you. Instead, focus your attention on Me, your constant Companion. Trust that I will equip you fully for whatever awaits you on your journey.
     I designed time to be a protection for you. You couldn't bear to see all your life at once. Though I am unlimited by time, it is in the present moment that I meet you. Refresh yourself in My company, breathing deep draughts of My Presence. The highest level of trust is to enjoy Me moment by moment. I am with you, watching over you wherever you go.

Psalm 143:8
English Standard Version

Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast love,
    for in you I trust.
Make me know the way I should go,
    for to you I lift up my soul.

Genesis 28:15
English Standard Version

Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.

My Prayer
Lord, I come to you in the morning. I seek you this day. You are with me. You live in me. I do not live my life alone. You are my protection, my rest. Wherever I go, you are there. I can trust You God.

Jesus Calling: June 26

     Stay calmly conscious of Me today, no matter what. Remember that I go before you as well as with you into the day. Nothing takes Me by surprise. I will not allow circumstances to overwhelm you, so long as you look to Me. I will help you cope with whatever the moment presents. Collaborating with Me brings blessings that far outweigh all your troubles. Awareness of My Presence contains Joy that can endure all eventualities.

Psalm 23:1-4
New King James Version

1 The Lord is my shepherd;
I shall not want.
He makes me to lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside the still waters.
He restores my soul;
He leads me in the paths of righteousness
For His name’s sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil;
For You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

2 Corinthians 4:16-17
English Standard Version

16 So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. 17 For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison,

Romans 14:22a - Keeping Faith to Yourself

Romans 14:22a - The faith that you have, keep between yourself and God.

Message: Convictions are not doctrine

Time: Written in AD 57 from Greece, to the Christians, both Gentile and Jewish in Rome

What the Lord is Saying:

It is important here to stay with the context of the passage and not veer away from it. This is a chapter on Christian liberty, or how to conduct myself in a world in which questions arise that are often outside the realm of an explicit direction or commandment or lesson from the Bible. God knew this would happen. God expected this to happen. God clearly wants this to happen. And so in this happening, what is to be my response through those questions? Or how am I to respond to my brother that has a difference of opinion and Paul states from the very beginning that these are "opinions (verse 1)."

1. I am to accept my brother. Don't allow the difference to divide. (verse 1)
2. Do not use the difference as an opportunity to judge my brother (verse 3, 4)
3. Each person can praise and thank God even though there are differences (verse 6)
4. Each person is the Lord's and belongs to the Lord (verse 8)
5. Each person is accountable to the Lord (verse 12)
6. Do not be a stumbling block to your brother (verse 13)
7. Be careful that your life lines up with your beliefs (verse 16)
8. Pursue peace and building one another up (verse 19)

Those are some of the ideas that I glean from this passage. I am sure someone else may come up with different conclusions.

This leads me to today's verse, "The faith that you have, keep between yourself and God." Differences are often the result of convictions. These convictions are important, but these convictions are not doctrine. I am to have that conviction between me and God, but not shove it onto another person. Often, the best course of action is to keep my convictions to myself, so as to not create a stumble for my brother.

I have a conscience that helps me as a person decide between right and wrong.  My conscience is informed, though, by Scripture.

Promise: I am to persuade others with gentleness and patience, not with arrogance.

Jesus Calling: June 25

     Open your hands and your heart to receive this day as a precious gift from Me. I begin each day with a sunrise, announcing My radiant Presence. By the time you rise from your bed, I have already prepared the way before you. I eagerly await your first conscious thought, I rejoice when you glance My way.
     Bring Me the gift of thanksgiving, which opens your heart to rich communion with Me. Because I am God, from whom all blessings flow, thankfulness is the best way to draw near Me. Sing praise songs to Me; tell of My wondrous works. Remember that I take great delight in you; I rejoice over you with singing.

Psalm 118:24
English Standard Version

This is the day that the Lord has made;
    let us rejoice and be glad in it.

Psalm 95:2
English Standard Version

Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving;
    let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!

Zephaniah 3:17
English Standard Version

The Lord your God is in your midst,
    a mighty one who will save;
he will rejoice over you with gladness;
    he will quiet you by his love;
he will exult over you with loud singing.

Jesus Calling: June 24

     Hold My Hand--and trust. So long as you are conscious of My Presence with you, all is well. It is virtually impossible to stumble while walking in the Light with Me. I designed you to enjoy Me above all else. You find the deepest fulfillment of your heart in Me alone.
     Fearful, anxious thoughts melt away in the Light of My Presence. When you turn away from Me, you are vulnerable to the darkness that is always at work in the world. Don't be surprised by how easily you sin when you forget to cling to My hand. In the world, dependency is seen as immaturity. But in My kingdom, dependence on Me is a prime measure of maturity.

Isaiah 41:10
English Standard Version

Fear not, for I am with you;
    be not dismayed, for I am your God;
I will strengthen you, I will help you,
    I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Psalm 62:5-6
English Standard Version

For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence,
    for my hope is from him.
He only is my rock and my salvation,
    my fortress; I shall not be shaken.

Jesus Calling: June 23

     Let My Love stream through you, washing away fear and distrust. A trusting response includes Me in your thoughts as you consider strategies to deal with a situation. My continual Presence is a promise, guaranteeing that you never have to face anything alone. My children teeth on the truth that I am always with them, yet they stumble around in a stupor, unaware of My loving Presence all around them. How that grieves Me!
     When you walk through a day in trusting dependence on Me, My aching heart is soothed. Gently bring your attention back to Me whenever it wanders away. I look for persistence--rather than perfection--in your walk with Me.

Psalm 52:8
English Standard Version

But I am like a green olive tree
    in the house of God.
I trust in the steadfast love of God
    forever and ever.

Deuteronomy 31:6
English Standard Version

Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.

Ephesians 4:30
English Standard Version

And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

Jesus Calling: June 22

     Thank Me for the very things that are troubling you. You are on the brink of rebelling, precariously close to shaking your fist in My Face. You're tempted to indulge in just a little complaining about My treatment of you. But once you step over that line, torrents of rage and self-pity can sweep you away. The best protections against this indulgence is thanksgiving. It is impossible to thank Me and curse Me at the same time.
     Thanking Me for trials will feel awkward and contrived at first. But if you persist, your thankful words, prayed in faith, will eventually make a difference in your heart. Thankfulness awakens you to My Presence, which overshadows all your problems.

Psalm 116:17
New King James Version

I will offer to You the sacrifice of thanksgiving,
And will call upon the name of the Lord.

Verse Thoughts
Interesting that sacrifice or offering is connected with thanksgiving. Take a moment to thank God, calling up His name, for what is occurring in life.

Philippians 4:4-6
English Standard Version

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

Verse Thoughts
Joy rests not on favorable circumstances, but “in the Lord.” I need to think about the Lord's coming ("at hand") like it is happening tomorrow which will keep my focus on that and not my present circumstances. Instead of being worried, I am to be thankful.

My Prayer
This is so true, Lord. It just does not come natural to thank You for things that are troubling me. Lord, help me to never complain about these trials. Keep me thankful for all the ways You provide.

Jesus Calling: June 21

     Wait patiently with Me while I bless you. Don't rush into My Presence with time-consciousness gnawing at your mind. I dwell in timelessness: I am, I was, I will always be. For you, time is a protection, you're a frail creature who can handle only twenty-four-hour segments of life. Time can also be a tyrant, ticking away relentlessly in your mind. Learn to master time, or it will be your master.
     Though you are time-bound creature, seek to meet Me in timelessness. As you focus on My Presence, the demands of time and tasks will diminish. I will bless you and keep you, making My Face shine upon you graciously, giving  you Peace

Micah 7:7
English Standard Version

But as for me, I will look to the Lord;
    I will wait for the God of my salvation;
    my God will hear me.

Revelations 1:8

English Standard Version

“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”

Numbers 6:24-26
English Standard Version

24 The Lord bless you and keep you;
25 the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you;
26 the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.

My Prayer (2019)
Lord, teach me to be patient. I'm in a rush to get rewards and what I want. Help me to wait for You and as I do continue to look to You. You aren't going anywhere. You are near. You will hear me. You will bless me and keep me and shine on me. You have been O so gracious to me. You have given me peace now for all eternity. Lord, I need more of a thankful heart each day. In this world that tells me I need more all the time and must be satisfied at every moment, I need to be more thankful of all that You have already given me.

Jesus Calling: June 20

     I speak to you continually. My nature is to communicate, though not always in words. I fling glorious sunsets across the sky, day after day after day. I speak in the faces and voices of loved ones. I caress you with a gentle breeze that refreshes and delights you. I speak softly in the depths of your spirit, where I have taken up residence.
     You can find Me in each moment, when you have eyes that see and ears that hear. Ask My Spirit to sharpen your spiritual eyesight and hearing. I rejoice each time you discover My Presence. Practice looking and listening for Me during quiet intervals. Gradually you will find Me in more and more of your moments. You will seek Me and find Me, when you seek Me above all else.

Psalm 8:1-4
English Standard Version

O Lord, our Lord,
    how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory above the heavens.
    Out of the mouth of babies and infants,
you have established strength because of your foes,
    to still the enemy and the avenger.
When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
    the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
what is man that you are mindful of him,
    and the son of man that you care for him?

Psalm 19:1-2
English Standard Version

The heavens declare the glory of God,
    and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.
Day to day pours out speech,
    and night to night reveals knowledge.

I Corinthians 6:19
English Standard Version

Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own .

Jeremiah 29:13
English Standard Version

You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.

My Prayer (2019)
Good morning Lord. Thank you for a new day. How majestic is Your name in all the earth. Your creation testifies continually to who You are. The sky above declares the glory of God as it covers us here on this earth you have created. Then I see me, in the mirror, and realize I am a temple. Lord, I want to extol You as My God and proclaim You above all else, not simply when I walk into church in the company of believers, but as I walk out into this world. I need you in me Lord giving me the courage to proclaim You in the midst of this world that continually finds goodness in each person and doesn't dare take the time to consider the Fall and our sins that we still commit. I don't want to be like that Lord. Remind me Lord that the most important thing in my life is falling into Your presence and not simply making sure my life right now is free of challenges. Lord, you show me in Your word how You take care of the birds and feed them, providing them what they need. Lord, I'm not so sure I trust You with that. When push comes to shove Lord, too often it is I that wants to be in control. Help me to rediscover You today and see You Lord. To be satisfied with You. Lord, I am embarrassed as to how easy it is for trials or challenges to derail me. I'm like a kid on the floor having a temper tantrum before You Lord because I am not getting what I want. I want to reflect You Lord. Teach me to seek you with all of my heart. Too often my seeking You is all about bringing my laundry list before You so that You meet all of MY needs and wants. Forgive me Lord. Lord, let You be sufficient.

Jesus Calling: June 19

     I am the firm foundation on which you can dance and sing and celebrate My Presence. This is My high and holy calling for you; receive it as a precious gift. Glorifying and enjoying Me is a higher priority than maintaining a tidy, structured life. Give up your striving to keep everything under control--an impossible task and a waste of precious energy.
     My guidance for each of My children is unique. That's why listening to Me is so vital for your well-being. Let me prepare you for the day that awaits you and point you in the right direction. I am with you continually, so don't be intimidated by fear. Thought it stalks you, it cannot harm you, as long as you cling to My hand. Keep your eyes on Me, enjoying Peace in My Presence.

Psalm 5:11
English Standard Version

But let all who take refuge in you rejoice;
    let them ever sing for joy,
and spread your protection over them,
    that those who love your name may exult in you.

Ephesians 3:20-21
English Standard Version

20 Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

Jude 24-25
English Standard Version

24 Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy, 25 to the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen.

Joshua 1:5
English Standard Version

No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life. Just as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you or forsake you.

My Prayer
Lord, you protect me. Lord, you want to do a great work in me by Your power. Lord, you want me to walk before you blameless. You provide us with Your Word and instructions on how to live. You want to keep me from stumbling. You are glory, majesty, dominion and authority always and along with that is for me to be presented before you with great joy. Lord, you never give up on me. Lord, I get distracted by circumstances, by so many different responsibilities throughout my day that I often forget the work that You are doing through Me. Thank you for this reminder that You are with me every step of the way. You will never leave me or forsake me. Help me Lord to believe in these truths and escape from the way of this world that tells me the opposite and that I must be self-sufficient. My sufficiency is in You God.

Jesus Calling: June 18

     You are My beloved child. I chose you before the foundation of the world, to walk with Me along paths designed uniquely for you. Concentrate on keeping in step with Me, instead of trying to anticipate My plans for you. If you trust that My plans are to prosper you and not to harm you, you can relax and enjoy the present moment.
     Your hope and your future are rooted in heaven, where eternal ecstasy awaits you. Nothing can rob you of your inheritance of unimaginable riches and well-being. Sometimes I grant you glimpses of your glorious future, to encourage you and spur you on. But your main focus should be staying close to Me. I set the pace in keeping with your needs and My purposes.

Ephesians 1:4
New American Standard

just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him

Proverbs 16:9
English Standard Version

The heart of man plans his way,
    but the Lord establishes his steps.

Jeremiah 29:11
English Standard Version

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.

Ephesians 1:13-14
English Standard Version

13 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.

Romans 14:20-21 - Protecting the Work of God

Romans 14:20-21 - 20 Do not, for the sake of food, destroy the work of God. Everything is indeed clean, but it is wrong for anyone to make another stumble by what he eats. 21 It is good not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything that causes your brother to stumble.

Message: Protecting the Work of God

Time: Written in AD 57 from Greece, to the Christians, both Gentile and Jewish in Rome

What the Lord is Saying:

It is amazing how much the issue of food has overridden this chapter.

Verse 2 - eats all things versus vegetables only; the focus here was comparing the weak in faith to those with faith (mature) -- we are to accept one another irregardless, not regard with contempt or judge a person God has accepted (verse 3).
Verse 6 - a person eats or does not eat does so for the Lord, giving thanks to the Lord.
Verse 14 - in the Lord Jesus nothing is unclean, but if something thinks something is unclean, then it is to him. So be it.
Verse 17 - the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking; that is not the goal; do not make a minor thing a major thing.

In verse 19, it is clear that my purpose toward my brother is to pursue peace and it is to build that brother up. It is to be concerned about his growth in Christ. My focus is on him, not on myself. I am not living life in order to make myself happy or please myself, but for the purpose of my brother and building him up.

I spoke to a man at the mall last night and he mentioned that he was happy with his life because he had a girl in his life that made him happy. There isn't anything wrong with that, but even that focus and our words are subtle, in that, life is thought to be good because, "I am happy." And yet what Paul is showing us here in these verses is the focus of our lives is not on ourselves, but on others. Even in Romans 12, verse 1 and 2, that began this treatise on living righteousness, our focus is presenting our bodies living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God. It is about renewing my mind. 12:3 says, "not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think" and in verse 10, "be devoted to one another in brotherly love."

This is a hard message because I am a selfish creature. I tend to do things in life that are best for me.

Tearing down the work of God
And so, now in verse 20, Paul repeats an idea that he mentioned in verse 17. He says, "do not tear down the work of God for the sake of food." In verse 17 it was, "the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking." Don't nullify God working in a persons life because of the food he is eating or not eating.

I was talking to a friend last night, sharing a book I was reading, and in that book, it mentions speaking in tongues. In Christianity today there are people that believe that gift is still relevant and those that believe it is not a gift that is still in practice today. There are differences. I think what Paul is saying here is don't make those issues larger than life. We can have those differences but don't divide with your brother because of them. I need to make sure my brother believes in the complete substitution of Christ for man by dying and being resurrected, imputing His righteousness to man, believing that one is saved by grace, not works and it is Christ that is working through us to sanctify us. Those are foundational, so why are we dividing then over an issue of speaking in tongues? I think that is what this verse may be saying that I do not want to "tear down the work of God" over food or over tongues.

It is true that all things (food) is unclean. But or however, they are evil for the man who eats and gives offense. My friend said something interesting last night. He said that people have a thirst to be right. That is true. But, we must be careful that in that thirst we are not hurting the faith of another.

Do not do anything to make your brother to stumble
In order to not tear down the work of God in a person's life, we therefore do not do anything to make our brother stumble. It is like I think we need to agree that before we discuss an issue of disagreement that there is agreement that we are not going to divide over this issue. Can we agree that we can discuss and have differences and still be brother and sister in Christ?

The problem people often have is taking indifferent matters and making it the standard for all people.

Promise: Respect people's difference. Don't make them bigger than they are. Focus not on the difference, but Christ working in the person's life.

Jesus Calling: June 17

     Learn to laugh at yourself more freely. Don't take yourself or your circumstances so seriously. Relax and know that I am God with you. When you desire My will above all else, life becomes much less threatening. Stop trying to monitor My responsibilities--things that are beyond your control. Find freedom by accepting the boundaries of your domain.
     Laughter lightens your load and lifts your heart into heavenly places. Your laughter rises to heaven and blends with angelic melodies of praise. Just as parents delight in the laughter of their children, so I delight in hearing My children laugh. I rejoice when you trust Me enough to enjoy your life lightheartedly.
     Do not miss the Joy of My Presence by carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders. Rather, take My yoke upon you and learn from Me. My yoke is comfortable and pleasant; My burden is light and easily borne.

Proverbs 17:22
English Standard Version

A joyful heart is good medicine,
    but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.

Proverbs 31:25
English Standard Version

Strength and dignity are her clothing,
    and she laughs at the time to come.

Matthew 1:23
English Standard Version

“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
    and they shall call his name Immanuel”

Matthew 11:28-30
Amplified

28 Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy-laden and overburdened, and I will cause you to rest. [I will ease and relieve and refresh your souls.]
29 Take My yoke upon you and learn of Me, for I am gentle (meek) and humble (lowly) in heart, and you will find rest (relief and ease and refreshment and recreation and blessed quiet) for your souls.
30 For My yoke is wholesome (useful, good—not harsh, hard, sharp, or pressing, but comfortable, gracious, and pleasant), and My burden is light and easy to be borne.

My Prayer
Help me to laugh at life more. Help me to not be so serious. Help me to accept your providence in my life. I worry too much Lord. I am too consumed with present situations and events, to the point that I don't see clearly.

Romans 14:19 - Peace and Mutual Upbuilding

Romans 14:19 - So then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding.

Message: Building others up

Time: Written in AD 57 from Greece, to the Christians, both Gentile and Jewish in Rome

What the Lord is Saying:

So let us then definitely aim for and eagerly pursue what makes for harmony and for mutual upbuilding of one another. - Amplified

So then we must always aim at those things that bring peace and that helps strengthen one another. - Living Bible

Therefore let us pursue the things which make for peace and the things by which one may edify another. - New King James Version

For me, the overriding theme I see from this text is having a concern for others. It is a willingness to put aside my own momentary desires or wants in order to build up another person.

The beginning of verse 19 has the same thought in mind in each translation with the phrases, "let us pursue" or "we must always aim" or "let us definitely aim or eagerly pursue". Thus, this isn't a statement of, oh by the way. The overriding thought of the believer in his relations to one another is to seek peace. This is something that is definitive and means I must make a special effort.

Philippians 2:3 says, "do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than ourselves."

I do not think that this means we cannot disagree. I also do not think that this context means unity in thought. Right now, in my life, I am in in a state of personal sacrifice as I raise my children. Their needs are greater than mine own. However, This does not mean I give them everything they want. But I am the parent, the authority, often the strong person, and I need to behave in such a way that I am aiming for eagerly pursuing peace in our relationship. This presents a challenge. It is a daily struggle. I have a need to provide for my family and do those things that are best for them and it is hard to navigate between what they want and what I think is best. I tend to err on the side of giving them what they want which is often at the expense of my own desires. I hope that I am making the right decision but I also think I get too focused on thinking there is only one right decision. I guess I just hope that by giving them what they want I am not harming them.

Well, back to the passage.

I think it is somewhat of a given that I am going to do what's best for myself. And so it is necessary to be reminded that I am to build up others. One of my favorite verses is Ephesians 4:29, which to me says we are to not tear down others with our words, but edify them, or bring them up.

Warren Wiersbe says that our desire is not to get everyone to agree with us, but to pursue peace. Don't cause others to stumble, but help them to grow and mature in Christ.

One of the things I liked about attending a small church was the building up that takes place among different age groups. And yet small churches don't always yield this. I attended a small church and people lived in a rural area and were accustomed to being to themselves and not opening up or sharing much. So, the small church didn't guarantee community.

I've noticed that some churches have two different services, catering to different likes of worship styles. The problem is this manufactures separation rather than community. It may not be the intent, but it is tragic that we cannot compromise.

Promise: If I desire to focus on others and everyone does this, then each person's needs will be met.

Jesus Calling: June 16

Stay on the high road with Me. Many voices clamor for your attention, trying to divert you to another path. But I have called you to walk ever so closely with Me, soaking in My Presence, living in My Peace. This is My unique design for you, planned before the world began.
     I have called each of My children to a different path, distinctly designed for that one. Do not let anyone convince you that his path is the only right way. And be careful not to extol your path as superior to anothers way. What I require of you is to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with Me--wherever I lead.

Ephesians 2:10
English Standard Version

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

Micah 6:8
English Standard Version

He has told you, O man, what is good;
    and what does the Lord require of you
but to do justice, and to love kindness,
    and to walk humbly with your God?

Romans 14:17-18 - Righteousness, Peace, and Joy

Romans 14:17-18 - 17 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. 18 Whoever thus serves Christ is acceptable to God and approved by men.

Message: Don't make our differences bigger than our faith.

Time: Written in AD 57 from Greece, to the Christians, both Gentile and Jewish in Rome

What the Lord is Saying:

Background or the Set-up
Well, this chapter on Christian Liberty continues to march on. The premise of this chapter is dealing with circumstances that aren't in the Bible and how do we get along with other believers in those situations. How do we not look like a church or people divided. I need to respect what other people think and not make it a war with them, but I also need to be careful that what I believe isn't elevated to a point where it is hurting someone else. Paul wrote this to the church in Rome made up of Jewish Christians and Gentiles and speaks to them about their differences. The Jews had strong convictions, namely about certain times of the year being holy and that their eating should only be of vegetables. They had different scruples from the Gentiles. So, how do we co-habitat? How do we live in the same community with these differences? I think we must be willing to accept them as differences. Christians today have so many differences in their thinking. There are basic tenets that are similar, but then so many differences. I'm not sure if it is fair to say that all of these differences need to be respected because there are some of them that do have theological issues, but I think we need to be careful not to judge too quickly with some.

But, Paul's point, as mentioned in Tabletalk (October 2014) is that the different people groups that are spoken to here are the mature and immature believers. Being mature doesn't give a person the license to then do whatever they want. I must be understanding to the immature and their convictions or customs. If something is a stumbling block to an immature Christian, then I need to not lord it over them, but refrain from it. It isn't that important and that is what Paul now says here in this passage.
 Verse 17
Verse 17 is a great verse: For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. I think the important thought here is that we should not elevate something such as eating and drinking and make it bigger that the message of righteousness, peace, and joy. The Kingdom of God is the Church of Christ here on earth. So, Paul is saying, what we eat and what we drink will not effect our eternal state. When he mentions righteousness, peace and joy, it is a little different I think from what he has said previously. (1) Again, this verse begins with the kingdom of God or the church here on earth, in Christ. I am to be righteous living in my behavior. I am to be faithful in all of the duties which I owe to God. (2) Peace does not appear to be the peace found in Romans 5:1, but instead it is to have peace among those in the church. I am not to be about strife or getting my own way. Again, the principle here is easy, the application is difficult because there are so many differences in the church. (3) Joy is the personal happiness I have from the joy of the gospel.

And all this is done in the Holy Spirit. I must be sensitive to the work of the Holy Spirit in my life. The Holy Spirit is there to testify of truth in my life. He confirms Jesus and His message in Me. And that message is righteousness, peace, and joy.

As a Christian, refraining from eating and drinking certain types of foods is not going to threaten my faith. I can do that.

Verse 18
Again, the focus is always on serving Christ. This is the key to my life. I am to serve Christ. This is acceptable to God and approved by men. This does not mean that wicked men will approve but they hopefully will respect.

Promise:  Whoever serves Christ is acceptable to God.

Jesus Calling: June 14

I have Loved you with an everlasting Love. Before time began, I knew you. For years you swam around in a sea of meaningless, searching for Love, hoping for hope. All that time I was pursuing you, aching to embrace you in My compassionate arms.
     When time was right, I revealed Myself to you. I lifted you out of that sea of despair and set you down on a firm foundation. Sometimes you felt naked--exposed to the revealing Light of My Presence, I wrapped an ermine robe around you: My robe of righteousness. I sang you a Love song, whose beginning and end are veiled in eternity. I infused meaning into your mind and harmony into your heart. Join Me in singing My song. Together we will draw others out of darkness into My marvelous Light.

Jeremiah 31:3
English Standard Version

    the Lord appeared to him from far away.
I have loved you with an everlasting love;
    therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you.

Isaiah 61:10
English Standard Version

I will greatly rejoice in the Lord;
    my soul shall exult in my God,
for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation;
    he has covered me with the robe of righteousness,
as a bridegroom decks himself like a priest with a beautiful headdress,
    and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

I Peter 2:9
New King James Version

But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;

Prayer
Lord, thank you for loving me. Thank you for not looking at my efforts or works or the way I think. I thank you that you don't hold your love based upon my thoughts. Your love is everlasting. Thank you for drawing me to yourself. You lifted me out of the mire and despair and put my feet on the rock. I pray more and more would understand this love.

Jesus Calling: June 13

I am creating something new in you: a bubbling spring of Joy that spills over into others' lives. Do not mistake this Joy for your own or try to take credit for it in any way. Instead, watch in delight as My Spirit flows through you to bless others. Let yourself become a reservoir of the Spirit's fruit.
     Your part is to live close to Me, open to all that I am doing in you. Don't try to control the streaming of My Spirit through you. Just keep focusing on Me as we walk through this day together. Enjoy My Presence, which permeates you with Love, Joy, and Peace.
John 3:8
English Standard Version

The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.

Galatians 5:22
English Standard Version

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness.

My Prayer
You make all things new and each day you are making me new. With your strength and You working through me, I can be a joy to others. Help me to stand confident in this each day, realizing that You are working through me. Lord, it is Your Spirit enabling me and I thank you for this.
Keep me close to You and open to all that you want to do in me. Help me to let your Spirit naturally flow through my life. I want to rest in You and allow You to seep through me into the lives of others I come in contact with.

Romans 14:15-16 - Preserving Christ's Sheep

Romans 14:15-16 -  15 For if because of food your brother is hurt, you are no longer walking according to love. Do not destroy with your food him for whom Christ died. 16 Therefore do not let what is for you a good thing be spoken of as evil.

Message: Showing Love to Your brother though your choices

Time: Written in AD 57 from Greece, to the Christians, both Gentile and Jewish in Rome

What the Lord is Saying:

I am right in the middle of a discussion on a Christians behavior towards another person (namely a Christian brother) over matters of disagreement. Paul isn't speaking of all disagreements, but those that involve information that is not explicitly understood through the reading of scripture.

He started off the chapter by talking about a person "weak in faith" or not as strong as the person seeing the other person. The big issue I saw was a respect towards people and their different convictions. (That said, I have said it earlier and I continue to think it is important to mention that there are many subjects that one person might view as negotiable and another non-negotiable. This is especially true in matters spoken of in the Old Testament as doctrine, but then not spoken of in the New Testament and the belief that their is in fact a new covenant and so the stuff in the Old Testament isn't needed to be upheld.) So, I think the principle of these verses is easy to read but the application of them is hard to define.

From verse 3 on, there is back and forth mentioning of food and days. Obviously, in that day and time, these were matters of big concern. And more specifically, the parties Paul is discussing throughout the book of Romans are Jews and Gentiles. To me, this started in chapter 2 when Paul began to speak about the customs of the Jews that tended to then regard the Jew as saved, notably circumcision, keeping the Law, and judging the Law. And probably, here in these verses, is once again looking at the customs of the Jew and now the life of the saved person and the Gentile. And the church of Rome was made up of Jewish Christians and Gentile Christians. There were customs, traditions, that the Jewish Christians continued to keep that the Gentile probably did not seem necessary.

And so now looking at verse 15, I see Paul's words to the Gentile: "If because of food your brother is hurt." The Gentile believed that any food was able to be eaten. The Jew held probably to vegetables only, but the Gentile ate whatever. This is somewhat of a confusing verse. A person may even get defensive reading it, sensing that he is begin instructed to give up something he enjoys. The key phrase I see in verse 14 is "walking according to love."

The evaluation tool that I should use is, am I showing love to my brother. I think of a couple of scenario's:
  1. I am having a party, inviting several friends, and at the party I plan to serve alcohol. One of my Christian brothers is a recovering alcoholic and recently took a vow to not drink again. Because of this, I need to not serve alcohol. Serving alcohol is something I do not have a problem doing, but I need to be sensitive to my brother and I don't want him to be given an opportunity to stumble. Here I am having charity, that is sacrificing my own comfort in order to not hurt the happiness of another.
  2. Same scenario as above, but this time one of my friends does not like to drink alcohol. I do not have to not serve alcohol. They don't like drinking alcohol so they won't, but that doesn't mean that other shouldn't. This is the respect that I believer Chapter 14 is referring to.
In verse 15, it has a couple of thoughts to it. One, in the same thought of verse 14, we need to make sure that what I think is good, but someone else thinks is wrong, doesn't because then something that people look at me and see as evil. This is kind of tough. So, with my above scenario, is it okay to have drinking in a house with someone that doesn't like drinking. I think it depends on the person and whether or not they can respect your different views.

I think also in this verse is a little bit of the idea that I must be very careful of my actions as a Christian. If my actions cause someone else to sin then how am I acting as a Christian? Paul has spoken of this many times. Verse 1 of chapter 2 says the Christan condemns himself when he judges. But even more clearly is verse 24, regarding the Jew, "The name of God is blasphemed because of you." The Jew upheld the law, but then broke it behind people's backs. Is it any wonder that the world loves to bring to light those pastors or ministers or broadcast Christians that have sinned in a manner that the world knows Christians despise? I think of many times when a pastor has been found cheating on his wife or even being caught in a homosexual relationship. How unfortunate this is because it gives the name of God a bad name.

I remember when I was 21 and worked at a golf course during the summer while doing beach ministry and my head foreman heard me cuss. He glared at me and thought I was in trouble. How could I do such a thing? It was fine for him to do it, but not me. (I notice this when I walk in a room and people are cursing and they immediately turn to me and say, "Sorry Chris" like they have offended me.)

As a Christian I must be very careful and I must be quick to apologize.

Promise: A mature believer is to be a strong believer.

Jesus Calling: June 12

Let Me Help you get through this day. There are many possible paths to travel between your getting up in the morning and your lying down at night. Stay alert to the many choice-points along the way, being continually aware of My Presence. You will get through this day one way or the other. One way is to moan and groan, stumbling along with shuffling feet. This will get you to the end of the day eventually, but there is a better way. You can choose to walk with Me along the path of Peace, leaning on Me as much as you need. There will still be difficulties along the way, but you can face them confidently in My strength. Thank Me for each problem you encounter, and watch to see how I transform trials into blessings.

I Corinthians 10:10
English Standard Version

nor grumble, as some of them did and were destroyed by the Destroyer.

Verse Thoughts
KJV translates grumble as murmur. We live in a world of murmurs. Murmuring signifies the speaking against a person or thing, out of dislike, impatience, or discontent. I have begun to stay clear of social media because it is mostly murmuring and I find myself being grafted into us against them. Personally, I think Satan enjoys this because there is no love toward one another.

Luke 1:79
English Standard Version

to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,
    to guide our feet into the way of peace.

My Prayer
Lord, I need your help through this day and every day. Some days I think I don't know where I am going, but I know your Spirit leads me, so help me to trust in that each day. I need to let your spirit control me and guide me through each day, each moment. Thank you for providing me life and grace and then providing me the means to trust you and guide me each day. It is hard, but help me to be more thankful for the trials and problems that come my way and realize that they are there to teach me. Like Job, I can welcome the bad with the good.

Jesus Calling: June 11

     Trust Me and don't be afraid, for I am your Strength and Song. Do not let fear dissipate your energy. Instead, invest your energy in trusting Me and singing My Song. The battle for control of your mind is fierce, and years of worry have made you vulnerable to the enemy. Therefore, you need to be vigilant in guarding your thoughts. Do not despise this weakness in yourself, since I am using it to draw you closer to Me. Your constant need for Me creates an intimacy that is well worth all the effort. You are not alone in this struggle for your mind. My Spirit living within you is ever ready to help in this striving. Ask Him to control your mind; He will bless you with Life and Peace.

Isaiah 12:2
English Standard Version

“Behold, God is my salvation;
    I will trust, and will not be afraid;
for the Lord God is my strength and my song,
    and he has become my salvation.”

Romans 8:6
English Standard Version

For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.

Verse Thoughts
There is a contrast here - a mind set on the flesh vs a mind set on the Spirit; flesh and Spirit. Flesh is death; Spirit is life and peace. Where is my mind set? We "need to be vigilant in guarding our thoughts." There are a lot of good things in this world I can set my mind on, but what I am asked to do is set my mind not simply on good things, but on the Spirit.

My Prayer
Lord, teach me to trust you and not my circumstances. I don't want to march through life because of what I am feeling, but I want to hang on your promises. I have everything that I need in Christ. Keep my eyes focused on those truths. Help my thoughts to glorify you. Control my mind.
