Jesus Calling: June 1

I am involved in each moment of your life. I have carefully mapped out every inch of your journey through this day, even though much of it may feel haphazard. Because the world is in a fallen condition, things always seem to be unraveling around the edges. Expect to find trouble in this day. At the same time, trust that My way is perfect, even in the midst of such messy imperfection.
Stay conscious of Me as you go through this day, remembering that I never leave your side. Let the Holy Spirit guide you step by step, protecting you from unnecessary trials and equipping you to get through whatever must be endured. As you trudge through the sludge of this fallen world, keep your mind in heavenly places with Me. Thus the Light of My Presence shines on you, giving you Peace and Joy that circumstances cannot touch.

Psalm 18:30
English Standard Version

This God—his way is perfect;
    the word of the Lord proves true;
he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him.

Verse thoughts
This psalm thanks the Lord for a great deliverance. The same psalm appears in 2 Samuel 22 with minor differences. As for God, the great Being, who has delivered me, His ways or doings are perfect. He is faithful to all of His promises.

Isaiah 41:13
English Standard Version

For I, the Lord your God,
    hold your right hand;
it is I who say to you, “Fear not,
I am the one who helps you.”

My Prayer
Lord, you are with me. Don't let me forget this. As I am often engrossed in my problems and my self-talk begins to overwhelm me, I start to think that I am alone, but I am not. In every moment You are there. Help me to not stare at my circumstances and draw a conclusion that all is not good. You are creator and your way is perfect; the Word of the Lord is true, a shield and refuge. You hold my right hand and let me know I need not fear. You are the one who helps. Center me on this truth. You are here. You are here.

Romans 14:1 - The Weak in Faith

Romans 14:1 - As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions.

Message: Accepting those weak in Faith

Time: Written in AD 57 from Greece, to the Christians, both Gentile and Jewish in Rome

What the Lord is Saying:

My Open Bible states that Chapter 14 is on the Principles of Christian Liberty and then Chapter 15 through verse 13 is the practice of Christian Liberty. I found this definition of Christian Liberty: "The freedom from God to do whatever you wish in any matter the Bible does not address, without fear of persecution by the church or saints!" John MacArthur states, "Christian liberty then is to take all that Christ provides, be free from having to fulfill a legal code to please God, being free from the frustration that says I can't make it. Being free from an external set of legal rules that I have to keep. Free to just function in the overflow of the work of the Spirit inside. Sinclair Ferguson called it "finding freedom from the Law without being a stumbling block to Jewish people."

I continue to explore practical Christianity as Romans 12 and 13 focused on Responsibilities toward God, others, government, and my neighbor. But, now the shift is how to conduct myself when the application does not have a specific word in the Bible. It is OK for Christians to watch television or movies? Is it okay to dance or play cards? What about eating meat left over from animals sacrificed to pagan gods? Is there a clear right and wrong?

This first verse of Chapter 14 seems to begin the discussion and first thing that is mentioned is the person that is weak in faith. I think we must be careful to not divide on issues that Scripture does not specifically address. Then, there is also the recognition that some people are weak in faith and others strong in faith and the weak may see ambiguous situations as not being wrong. Paul's big point is: do not quarrel over opinions.

Promise: From TableTalk - Mature Christians are to be extraordinarily patient with immature believers, putting up with their misunderstandings and other growing pains as they aim for maturity in the Lord.

Jesus Calling: May 31

The Peace that I give you transcends your intellect. When most of your mental energy goes into efforts to figure things out, you are unable to receive this glorious gift. I look into your mind and see thoughts spinning round and round: going nowhere, accomplishing nothing. All the while, My Peace hovers over you, searching for a place to land.
Be still in My Presence, inviting Me to control your thoughts. Let My Light soak into your mind and heart, until you are aglow with My very Being. This is the most effective way to receive My Peace.

2 Thessalonians 3:16
English Standard Version

Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you all.

Verse thoughts
From MacArthur Study Bible - Paul knew this characteristic of God (Peace) would be most meaningful to reflect upon in light of the intense spiritual battle that raged all around the Thessalonians

Job 22:21
English Standard Version

“Agree with God, and be at peace;
thereby good will come to you."

Verse Thoughts
Agree with God that I am a sinner and He will give you peace (Romans 5:1).

My Prayer
Lord, forgive me, I am too quick to figure things out, on a quest to know every detail and leaving nothing to simple trust in My life. I want to rest in You and rest in Your Peace. Give me Your strength.

Romans 13:12-14 - Living in the Light of the Day

Romans 13:12-14 - 12 The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. 13 Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy. 14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.

Message: Put on the Lord Jesus Christ

Time: Written in AD 57 from Greece, to the Christians, both Gentile and Jewish in Rome

What the Lord is Saying:

Overview
As a person in Christ, I am to "put on" the Lord Jesus Christ each day. I have a responsibility in how I live and breath and act in the world in which I live. I was reading from an article in TableTalk about living an Ordinary Life in such a manner that glorifies an extraordinary Man. It referenced I Thessalonians 4 and (1) controlling my sexual desires and living a pure life, (2) loving one another, especially those in the church, and (3) work hard and be content not being noticed. So, as I read these verses now in Romans that are a culmination of this section on my responsibility toward my neighbor, it helps me to focus on walking properly, put on the armor of light, cast off the works of darkness, make no provision for the flesh, do not gratify the flesh's desires, but instead put on the Lord Jesus Christ in my life.

I have really enjoyed thinking about discipline and training myself and it is often a quest to live within the means of the person God has made me, and learn to control myself, so that I will walk in Christ.

My central reason for living like this is not so that I would like pious or God would shine a light on Me, but I live this way to glorify God with my life for He has saved me, and there is no other way to live, but a life of gratitude.

If people see good in me, then it is because of Jesus in Me and I want to give glory to God for this.

Breaking it down

The night is far gone (v.12)
The night or darkness is cut off or has come to a close. I must remember that God declares me completely righteous ("The righteous man shall live by faith (1:17)"; "the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe (3:22)") and so in Christ the night or the opposite of light has been cut off and I am far gone from it.

The day is at hand (v.12)
The glory of living in heaven is near. On one hand, living in darkness is gone from my life, and living with God in heaven is near or at hand. In between, I am being sanctified or growing in holiness and conformity to Christ.

Preparation (v.12)
What does a person do that is preparing to go to the White House? They should put on their good clothes and clean themselves up. I think of all the details that occur when someone like the president comes to town for a visit. People roll out the red carpet, sometimes not literally, but often in ways such as making the surroundings look nice, making themselves look nice, and making sure every detail is ready. As a Christian, I am preparing to go to heaven, and even now, I should be in constant preparation. I should be living in anticipation of that day. I will want to put aside the works of darkness and instead present myself in the Light.  I am to put on the armor of light. This armor includes truth, righteousness, faith, hope, love, humility.

Walk in the daytime (v. 13)
In the daytime, all of my actions are clearly seen. It is at dark that foul and wicked deeds are done. I am to live as if all my conduct were seen and there was nothing to conceal. My life should be lived the same way in private that is in lived in public. In public, my life is on its best behavior. But, my private life should be lived in the same manner.

Not living in lewd behavior, strife, or envy (v.13)
There should not be any disorder or sensuality, rioting and drunkenness, lewd, immodest behavior. These are common to the heathen. There is a deception that is present in these sins. Often, there is the thought or idea that this type of behavior or living is better than simple monogamy. But, really this just is another type of drug or greed that takes place in life. Often times, what I notice in life, is that trusting God is difficult because we have things presented to us that seemingly have clear outcomes and they are things that the heathens shout from the rooftops that there is nothing better than these enjoyments. But, God asks us to trust Him. He created us and he created sensuality and so he most definitely understands how it should best be a part of our lives. And I need to remember this. My happiness in marriage means I am submitting to the Lord and accepting His hand of providence.

The vices that are listed here are not independent of one another, but are often performed in concert with the others. Our envy results in us feeling like we must have what other people have.

Put on the Lord Jesus Christ (v.14)
Put on takes on the meaning of putting on a jacket or apparel. Jesus was different from anything in the previous verse. He was temperate, chaste, pure, peacable, and meek. He is to be my example, my guide, my pattern and guide.

No provision (v.14)
On the contrary, make no quest for anything that is contrary to the Lord, or is natural man's desire.

Promise: Jesus is My everything

Jesus Calling: May 30

Time with Me cannot be rushed. when you are in a hurry, your mind flitters back and forth between Me and the tasks ahead of you. Push back the demands pressing in on you; create a safe space around you, a haven in which you can rest with Me. I also desire this time of focused attention and I use it to bless you, strengthening and equipping you for the day ahead. Thus, spending time with Me is a wise investment.
Bring Me the sacrifice of your precious time. This creates sacred space around you--space permeated with My Presence and My Peace.
Psalm 119:27
English Standard Version

Make me understand the way of your precepts,
and I will meditate on your wondrous works.

2 Chronicles 16:9
English Standard Version

For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to give strong support to those whose heart is blameless toward him. You have done foolishly in this, for from now on you will have wars.

Hebrews 13:15
New King James Version

Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name.

My Prayer (2018)
Right now, Lord, my mind is racing. I have so many things I am thinking about. There are so many seemingly responsibilities I seem to have in my life. And so, to take time, to pull back, and just rest in You and bring you my time. I don't know. I mean, right now, I'm up. I'm usually sleeping at 3:30am, but my mind is racing about the events of this week and work and my son and you know, everything, and I can't sleep. Lord, I look at these verses - meditate on your works and a heart that is not blameless and Lord, where is time even in my day right now to offer the sacrifice of praise to You. Lord, free me, even if it is just a few minutes. Lord, it makes no sense to me right now. What is going to change Lord? But whatever, I come to you this day. It doesn't make sense to me, but I do focus this moment on You. Free me, at least right now. Free me from what ails me. Be my refuge and my fortress, at least right now.

Romans 13:11 - Salvation Draws Near

Romans 3:11 - Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed.

Message: Awakened

Time: Written in AD 57 from Greece, to the Christians, both Gentile and Jewish in Rome

What the Lord is Saying:

I have a responsibility toward God. I have a responsibility toward society. I have a responsibility toward the government. I have a responsibility toward my neighbors. It is true that Love fulfills the Law (verse 10), but only if that Love is Jesus. I cannot fulfill the law on my own merit.

I am no closer today than I was yesterday nor tomorrow. God forgives the sin I committed yesterday, that I commit today, that I will commit tomorrow. I was saved, I am saved, and I will be saved.  I am saved, but my salvation will not be completely realized or known until I enter the Glory of God in heaven.

Know the time
In dark days, away from God, I know not the time. Each day is the same. There is no urgency in the day. When I live in ignorance, darkness, oppression, falsehood and the bounty of sin, time is relative. But, in knowing God, time is valuable and now I have knowledge of it. I now understand how short time is and I understand the value of time. I now have a calling. Before, time was just a chain of events leading to certain milestones -- graduation, marriage, family, retirement. But, now time is almost frightening because the grace of God is wanted so deeply for all people.

I have been awakened. Darkness blinded me, but now I am awake.

For I am nearer and nearer to salvation, each day.

Promise: The Glory of God is getting closer and closer each day for those walking in Light.

Jesus Calling: May 29

I am with you, watching over you constantly. I am Emmanuel (God with you); My Presence enfolds you to radiant Love. Nothing, including the brightest blessings and the darkest trials, can separate you from me. Some of My children find Me more readily during dark times, when difficulties force them to depend on Me. Others feel closer to Me when their lives are filled with good things. They respond with thanksgiving and praise, thus opening wide the door to My Presence.
I know precisely what you need to draw nearer to Me. Go through each day looking for what I have prepared for you. Accept every event as My hand-tailored provision for your needs. When you view your life this way, the most reasonable response is to be thankful. Do not reject any of My gifts; find Me in every situation.
Matthew 1:23
English Standard Version

“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and they shall call his name Immanuel”

Colossians 2:6-7
English Standard Version

6 Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him,7 rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.

Romans 13:10 - Fulfilling the Law

Romans 13:10 - Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.

Message: Love your neighbor

Time: Written in AD 57 from Greece, to the Christians, both Gentile and Jewish in Rome

What the Lord is Saying:

From Tabletalk: Love consists mainly of warm affection, and often means whatever people want it to mean. If someone doesn't feel love for someone, then they can do such things as divorce a spouse. And then also love allows anything to happen. If two people love each other, then they should be allowed to be together (married or not, any choice of sexual lifestyle). Even polygamy is viewed okay because it is based on love. What does love demand? If we are the people of God, then we must follow the law of love as presented in the Bible. Paul in the previous passage tied love to our neighbor to our love of God. God did this, obviously with purpose, in the giving of the 10 commandments. How we treat others has an affect on our relationship with God. We need to be guided by God's spirit as we love.  (Note, Tabletalk doesn't really offer an answer to the observation that they made that we do anything in the name of love. But, what I need to do is continue be guided by God's definitions of love and not the world's because love will mean many things to people.)

I think the big thing I see from this thought and these verses is God is still love and He still defines love and He created love in us. And love has parameters. It is true that my life needs to be more about love than discipline or correction. I admit, I struggle with this. I am selfish and want my way and want what I think is best. I am often not driven simply by love. I want to define it in my way.

I was watching an episode of Good Wife and Alicia, in response to a woman thinking that she should get a divorce because her husband slept with another woman, and a woman shouldn't stand for that, made the comment that she doesn't care about what the world thinks or what people think is the right decision, she must make the right decision for her family. Now, there are other issues with her life and decisions on that show and adultery that takes place, but my life needs to be guided by Truth and her character was saying, that her decisions shouldn't be affected by the worlds.

"Love does no wrong to a neighbor." If I lived this way and other people lived this way, how different our world would be. I live my life wanting to escape bad decisions, but often am bothered when other people escape those bad decisions. I was sitting at a graduation party the other night, looking at all of these wealthy people and realizing that they can do so much (because of all the money they have) and money is never an issue in their life. Megan would get a car in that scenario and I could provide it. We could buy things for the house, windows, a yard, things to make it more appealing to us and more enjoyable to be in. We would have money for vacations, rather than trying to figure out how to live the cheapest way we can. I have a lot of envy and jealousy in me and it affects me. Help me God to be freed from this. That is not love for my neighbor. That is not what this verse is talking about.

Albert Barnes makes the statements: The gambler desires the property of his neighbor without any compensation, and thus works ill to him. The dealer in lotteries desires property for which he has never toiled, and which must be obtained at the expense and loss of others. Many employments work ill toward others.

Isn't this what I often want? A free pass? I hate the decisions I have made. But, the above is true. My boss made the statement that, even after all his hard work, he still thinks the ultimate is winning the lottery. Money still is what we think takes away all the problems of life. We believe the lie. It dangles in front of us and we believe it.

But, what I need to do is really be motivated by love. I have a lot of problems with my neighbors and I have a hard time thinking great things about them. It is too much of a competition with me and that is sin.

Promise: Love is the fulfilling of the Law

Jesus Calling: May 28

Let Me anoint you with My Presence. I am King of kings and Lord of lords, dwelling in unapproachable Light. When you draw near to Me, I respond by coming closer to you. As My Presence envelops you, you may feel overwhelmed by My Power and Glory. This is a form of worship; sensing your smallness to comparison to My Greatness.
Man has tended to make himself the measure of all things. But man's measure is too tiny to comprehend My majestic vastness. That is why most people do not see Me at all, even though they live and move and have their being in Me.
Enjoy the radiant beauty of My Presence. Declare My glorious Being to the world!

I Timothy 6:15-16
English Standard Version
15 which he will display at the proper time—he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.

James 4:8
English Standard Version
Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

Acts 17:28
English Standard Version
for
“‘In him we live and move and have our being’;
as even some of your own poets have said,
“‘For we are indeed his offspring.’

Psalm 145:3-6
English Standard Version
Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised,
    and his greatness is unsearchable.
One generation shall commend your works to another,
and shall declare your mighty acts.
On the glorious splendor of your majesty,
and on your wondrous works, I will meditate.
They shall speak of the might of your awesome deeds,
and I will declare your greatness.

My Prayer (2018)
In your presence, I am. Lord, we need your power and glory. We need to see You and enjoy the radiance of Your glory. In America Lord, we are a hurting people right now. There are atrocities that continue to happen at our public schools as people assault and kill those innocent ones. Natural disasters are prevalent. Everywhere Lord we need more of You. People need more of You. Help us Lord to proclaim your name and value you as number one.

Romans 13:8-9 - The Sum of God's Commandments

Romans 13:8-9 - Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

Message: Owe nothing to anyone except owe love to everyone.

Time: Written in AD 57 from Greece, to the Christians, both Gentile and Jewish in Rome

What the Lord is Saying:

Following my responsibility toward God, Society, Government -- I have a responsibility toward our my neighbor. He has mentioned in the previous verse that my giving to the government is what is due, but right after this, he says I am to owe no one anything. But, instead I am to love one another. Many of the commandments speak of my duty toward my neighbor - adultery, murder, stealing, coveting - with the reminder that all of these can be followed if I simply "love my neighbor as myself."

Owe no one
I do not think this means that I can never go into debt. Again, in verse 7, I have a responsibility to pay (the government) what is due them, so if I take a loan out, I have a responsibility to make regular payments and always pay what is due. I think the issue here is the problem that often comes from taking on debt is we take on too much and then can't pay it all and then we put ourselves in a bad situation and the person we are indebted to as well. If I get to a point where I can not pay my bills then I have acted frivolously with my money. So, I think I need to try to not go into debt. It is better to may for things in cash or pay my bills.

At various times, I have had the ambition to pay for everything with a Credit Card because the credit card companies often provide you with cash rewards or travel rewards by paying for things with cash. My concern with this is it is easy to get carried away with spending and buying more than is needed and using the credit card is a very easy transaction, to the point that it is easy to not think about what you are doing. And so using it requires a great amount of discipline. There is great discipline in setting aside money and only buying what I can afford. I must be careful I do not put myself in a tough situation.

Love one another
My one main responsibility toward every person is to love them. I have a debt to people to constantly pay them with love, to constantly find ways to discharge that debt and relinquish it from myself to that person. This is my overriding focus toward others. The reason I am not to get into a situation where I owe someone something is because I am not to put them in an ill situation. I am not to injure another person. If they loan me something and I am not able to pay them back then they are hurt as well. Love is something I must discharge as well at all times to my brother. Without love I could injure another person. No one ever said of another person, "he loved me too much." Love is not something that a person can receive too much of.

Fulfilling the Law
When I pay someone back, I take away all the burden that is due; in the same way, love fulfills all the purpose of justice and truth.

The Law is often talked about by Paul as something that is there to show us that we cannot fulfill it. Romans 7 states that I would not have known sin if the Law had not said, "You shall not or you shall." The law open up my eyes. The law cannot be fulfilled on my own. I need a Savior. But, Paul here makes the statement that by loving, in love, the law is fulfilled. People often say, "Jesus loves me." The pinnacle of our faith is love. I am where I am at right now because of the love Jesus has for me. He accepts me. He looks past my sin and sees me. He forgives me. He understands that I cannot make myself worthy. He took care of my need for justification before God. He has complete love for me. What draws me to Jesus is His amazing love for me. This is to be my focus in life. I am to love one another.

One of my chief desires is that my children know that I love them; that their mother loves them. But, love does not mean a blanket acceptance to everything in their life. It is tragic that people often treat love and acceptance as the same thing. Jesus loves us, but he hates sin.

All fulfilled in loving one another
It is amazing to see the power that I have with love. It is amazing to see the impact that we have with love. Love should be the calling card of the Christian. Love is what testifies of their being a God. Love impacts people like nothing else. No matter what sin has ever been committed, love can come in and rescue that sin.
"If this command were fulfilled, it would prevent all fraud, injustice, oppression, falsehood, adultery, murder, theft, and covetousness." - Albert Barnes
If there is one thing that each of my days should be about, it is this. I need to love people more.

Note: It is funny. I spent time on this and then went to get ready for the day and asked my wife for something regarding my son and helping out with a project this weekend when his desire was to go be with his friends out of town at the Lake. I asked for my wife's opinion, but then I didn't want it because it wasn't what I wanted to hear. She gave me her perspective and I shot it down because she didn't agree with me. And then I made it about my pain. I brought guilt into the equation. I did not love. I got caught up in the moment and didn't love. I started reacting and didn't love. I am a wretched man. I don't know how to truly love people. My selfishness got in the way of my love.

Promise: Love heals all wounds.

Jesus Calling: May 27

Seek My Face at the beginning of your day. This practice enables you to "put Me on" and "wear Me" throughout the day. Most people put on clothes soon after arising from bed. Similarly, the sooner you "put Me on" by communicating with Me, the better prepared you are for whatever comes your way.
To "wear Me" is essentially to have My mind; to think My thoughts. Ask the Holy Spirit to control your thinking; be transformed by this renewal within you. Thus you are well equipped to face whatever people and situations I bring your way. Clothing your mind in Me is your best preparation for each day. This discipline brings Joy and Peace to you and those around you.
Psalm 27:8
New King James Version
You have said, “Seek my face.”
My heart says to you,
“Your face, Lord, do I seek.”

Romans 13:14
English Standard Version
But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.

Colossians 3:12
English Standard Version
Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience.

Romans 13:6-7 - Paying our Taxes

Romans 13:6-7 - For because of this you also pay taxes, for rulers are servants of God, devoting themselves to this very thing. Render to all what is due them: tax to whom tax is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honor to whom honor.

Message: Render to all what is due

Time: Written in AD 57 from Greece, to the Christians, both Gentile and Jewish in Rome

What the Lord is Saying:

My responsibility - a review
A Christian has responsibilities. We are to "present our bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God" from verse 1 of chapter 12. We have a responsibility first and foremost to God. We have a responsibility to "not to think more highly of oneself than he ought to think (12:3)." And "let every person be in subjection to the governing authorities (13:1)." These are simply marks of a Christian. I am not to link myself (conform) to the world but my mind is to be renewed daily. This is what I am to do, not because I am trying to receive something or gain something, but because God is good and I am his servant and I am to uphold the ways of God.

Paying Taxes
Because rulers have been set up by God, I "also pay taxes." My role is to not only be subject to the rules and the authority of the government, but I am also to pay them taxes or pay my portion in supporting the government. These are individuals serving the people and they are to be compensated for their work. It is possible that one is paying taxes to support a regime that is not acting in a moral manner, but our duty is first to surrender to God, and pay the tax, but I still have a responsibility to vote in a better representative.

Being a Christian does not de-obligate us from being servants to the government. I am to be a cheerful giver in supporting the individuals supporting the community and the welfare of the community. Understood in these verses is individuals are paying taxes and they are to continue in this discipline. It has already been discussed that the role of government is to uphold good and punish evil and so our tax paid is supporting this cause.
  • Custom - this word has also been translated tribute and it appears to mean the tax on real estate, land, or merchandise.
  • Fear - I should stand in awe of those that wear the badge or sword. It is clear and true that I serve out of fear of being punished. There is nothing wrong in wanting to avoid punishment.
  • Honor - I am to be reverent towards those in authority.
Can I question the government? Yes, but I am also to show respect to the government. They have a difficult job and it is easy for me to stand on the sidelines and critique. So, to this I need to resist and act in a way that is honoring to God.

To me, one of the big challenges in these verses is that I am called to pay taxes, but often I don't want to because I don't believe in the mission or the way in which my taxes are being spent. I notice I do this at church as well. I must be careful because first and foremost I am servant of God and my payment of taxes/tithes is because these are the individuals God has set up to govern my life. Whether they do it properly is a different story.

Promise: I fulfill God's command when I pay taxes.

Jesus Calling: May 26

In a world of unrelenting changes, I am the One who never changes. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. Find in Me the stability for which you have yearned.
I created a beautifully ordered world: one that reflected My perfection. Now, however, the world is under the bondage of sin and evil. Every person on the planet faces gaping laws of uncertainty. The only antidote to this poisonous threat is drawing closer to Me. In My Presence you can face uncertainty with perfect Peace.

Revelation 22:13
English Standard Version

I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.

John 16:33
Amplified

I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have [perfect] peace and confidence. In the world you have tribulation and trials and distress and frustration; but be of good cheer [take courage; be confident, certain, undaunted]! For I have overcome the world. [I have deprived it of power to harm you and have conquered it for you.]

My Prayer (2018)
You never change God. You are the first and the last, the beginning and the end, the Alpha and Omega.  You beautifully ordered this world and it reflects you. There is beauty in the flowers because you are beautiful. You made all of this and it is so pleasing to my eye. In You, I have perfect peace and confidence. Thank you for being over this world. Thank you for sending your Spirit to live in me and give me strength, your strength. I depend on You Jesus. I want to rest in You, in Your Presence. You are my stability. You are my Rock, my fortress. I praise You God. You alone are God and I worship You.

Romans 13:5 - Submission for Conscience's Sake

Romans 13:5 - Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God's wrath but also for the sake of conscience.

Message: Be in subjection

Time: Written in AD 57 from Greece, to the Christians, both Gentile and Jewish in Rome

What the Lord is Saying:

It is clear from these verses the government has a purpose and God set up government because at the moment man sinned people would need to be restrained and protected. And when his people get out of line punishment would be necessary. And as we talked about yesterday, the government are God's representatives to avenge wrongdoers. But it must be clear that as I look at these verses, my thinking should not simply be how other people are supposed to be. I am not pointing the finger at the government, wanting them to get their act together. But I am to look at myself as a citizen and how I am supposed to respond in a world that is set up with governments. The tendency often in reading anything, any sort of instruction, it to determine how that reading affects others. We are quick to self justify and we are also quick to point the finger as we often say, "the problem is not with me, but the problem is with other people." This is often our outcry: "if other people would just get their act together, then all would be fine and dandy."

But in verse five Paul reminds us of our personal responsibility. Verse one told us that "there is no authority except from God and those which exist are established by God." In verse 2, a "resistance to authority" means then we have resisted God. Paul says in this book that "there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus" and yet by resisting authority we receive condemnation ourselves. If we do good we should have nothing to fear. But if we do evil we should not be surprised at the wrath that comes from it.

And now in verse five, because of this, because of what God has established we are to be in subjection to it. This is it, first and foremost submission is to happen because God has established it. Yet, Paul reminds us that people are not just motivated because of God's authority. In verse five, Paul reminds us that we are in subjection also because of the wrath upon the individual when they do not practice what is good but instead practice evil. Bad things will happen when we disobey the law. Law disobedience often results in fines where our money that is earned is now to be paid to the government. Our job is to protect our family and to glorify God but we can't do this if we were stuck in the cell serving a sentence. And then Paul also concludes that we are to be in subjection to our authority because our conscience move us in this direction.

Man has been given a conscience. This confidence comes from God as we saw in Romans two verse 15, "their conscience bearing witness and thoughts alternately accusing or else defending them."

So again in these verses God tells us that we are to be obedient to the law because God institutes it, God chooses the penalty or the wrath that comes from being disobedient but also he has given us a conscience to know right and wrong. Is not this conscience amazing? It is tragic to see people that do not ascribe this to God but rather somehow our own personal faculties just developed this conscience or that it is through trial and error. Again, as it says in Romans one verse 25, "they exchange the truth of God for a lie." This is why I like the law and grace method of evangelism because it appeals to the conscience.

Promise: Doing good for any reason is better than doing evil, but the Lord does not find our doing good pleasing unless we are doing it for the right reasons.

Jesus Calling: May 25

The world is too much with you, My child. Your mind leaps from problem to problem to problem, tangling your thoughts in anxious knots. When you think like that, you leave me out of your world-view and your mind becomes darkened. Though I yearn to help, I will not violate your freedom. I stand silently in the background of your mind, waiting for you to remember that I am with you.
When you turn from your problems to My Presence, your load is immediately lighter. Circumstances may not have changed, but we carry your burdens together. Your compulsion to "fix" everything gives way to deep, satisfying connection with Me. Together we can handle whatever this day brings.

Isaiah 41:10
English Standard Version

fear not, for I am with you;
    be not dismayed, for I am your God;
I will strengthen you, I will help you,
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Zephaniah 3:17
English Standard Version

The Lord your God is in your midst,
    a mighty one who will save;
he will rejoice over you with gladness;
    he will quiet you by his love;
he will exult over you with loud singing.

Psalm 34:19
English Standard Version

Many are the afflictions of the righteous,
but the Lord delivers him out of them all.

My Prayer (2018)
Lord, you know, that as a man, I like to fix everything. I struggle simply listening to my wife describe a situation and not interjecting my solution when all she really wants is an ear. I prowl about everywhere wanting to fix. Perhaps it is the way you have designed me, but there are times when I need to stop, drop, and pray and trust that you know what you are doing. You are my deliverer, my God, to give me strength and help me. Help me to not do it all myself, but to come to you for direction, guidance, ownership of my problems.

Romans 13:4b - The Government and the Sword

Romans 13:4b - But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God's wrath on the wrongdoer.

Message: The government's vocation is to carry the sword (badge) and execute God's wrath on the wrongdoer.

Time: Written in AD 57 from Greece, to the Christians, both Gentile and Jewish in Rome

What the Lord is Saying:

Doing wrong
It seems that the primary role of government--found here in these verses--is to uphold good. The Scripture says, "but if you do wrong, be afraid." We must uphold the rules of our society and if we do wrong in our own accord, we should not be surprised of the penalty. This is the essence of these verses. Yet, we are not to submit to the government when they uphold terror or do things that are contrary to the word of God.

The sword or badge
The passage also says, "for he does not bear the sword in vain." The sword in this verse is similar to a badge that a sheriff would wear. The badge is emblematic, informing people of the authority of the person wearing it. Now I remember watching movies--westerns--where the sheriffs wore this badge and yet was on the side of evil. That was one of the tensions in the movie. And this is a tension in life sometimes because we half to decipher what good and evil are.

The tension in our society today
This issue of homosexuality and gay marriage is something that is difficult to decipher. Our government is moving more and more toward a leadership that upholds this as good. And yet, at one level, what they are intending to do or the outcome is often one of fairness by simply allowing the citizens to share in the benefits, such as tax benefits, afforded other married people. So on the one hand that doesn't appear to be something that is evil. But in so doing it communicates a message of approving the citizens choice for these unnatural relationships.

So the government that we are commanded to uphold now in these verses is moving more and more toward upholding things that conflict with the Bible (and yet there is even discussion now that these verses have different meaning today). In some ways right and wrong, 100 years ago, was more clearly defined. But now with the ever increasing rights of each person and the affirmation of the individuality of each person, the application of this verse seems to get tougher.

People should see the badge or the sword and its authority and desire to keep the law just by that viewing of authority, even if there was no other motive.

Exacting vengeance
In verse 4, it states that the one who is in authority is "the servant of God, and avenger who carries out God's wrath on the wrongdoer." The Scripture says, "vengeance is Mine, declares the Lord" and yet God appoints government to carry out wrath on the wrongdoer. But now in this world in which right and wrong becomes more blurry, men start not seeing the government carrying out wrath on the wrongdoer but instead see the need to do it themselves.

I see this type of thinking present everywhere. I see this in movies when a father's child is kidnapped and rather than waiting for the government/law/police he wants to take matters into his own hands and the movie often even paints the picture that if the person would have waited for the law the matter would not have resolved and life would not have been spared. I see this in my job when a coworker does something that I don't like, rather than waiting for my boss to do something, I take vengeance into my own hands. Why do I do this? Often it is because (1) I am inpatient and don't want to wait for my boss, (2) but it is also because my boss does not execute vengeance in the manner in which I want it done. I see this in life when a courts decision is not to punish an offender because they get off on a technicality and so people take the matter into their own hands. Recently, there has been an eruption of police officers getting shot because the courts did not execute vengeance upon these officers in the way the people wanted and so "an Oxbow Incident" erupts.

It is interesting because I even see this in the TV shows that we watch. I see this in shows like Hawaii 5O, a special task force is assigned by the governor, and this task force often carries out wrath on the wrongdoer in ways that are not in line with the laws, but we like it because the person is 'getting what they deserve.' Chicago PD is another show that does this because criminals with the use of lawyers and their inalienable rights have figured out how to get around the law so the Chicago PD officers threaten or use excessive violence in order to save a person. It is subtle but authority is continually being compromised.

Conclusion
And so being a Christian and upholding these verses makes us look even more backwards to society and our peers. Reading and studying God's word is a challenge. How much more do we need the fellowship with one another, the talking about these verses and prayer.

Promise: God's promise and his plan is correct. The state is to uphold good and carry out wrath on the wrongdoer.

Jesus Calling: May 24

Bring Me your mind for rest and renewal. Let Me infuse My Presence into your thoughts. As your mind stops racing, your body relaxes and you regain awareness of Me. This awareness is vital to your spiritual well-being; it is your lifeline, spiritually speaking.
There are actually more than four dimensions in this world where you live. In addition to the three dimensions of space and the one of time, there is the dimension of openness to My Presence. This dimension transcends the others, giving you glimpses of heaven while you still reside on earth. This was part of My original design for mankind. Adam and Eve used to walk with Me in the garden, before their expulsion from the Eden. I want you to walk with Me in the garden of your heart, where I have taken up permanent residence.
Genesis 3:8
English Standard Version

And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.

Psalm 89:15
English Standard Version

Blessed are the people who know the festal shout,
who walk, O Lord, in the light of your face,

My Prayer
Lord, help me to come to you for my rest. I often go to the television to relax, but let me come to You. Give me quiet moments with you and allow you to work through me, relaxing me so that I can regain an awareness of You. Like Adam and Even walked with you in the garden, I want my days to be about walking with you. Remind me that I can talk to you wherever....whenever. Keep me alert to what you are doing and help me to continually testify of you in the world in which I live.

Jesus Calling: May 23

Approach each new day with desire to find Me. Before you get out of bed, I have already been working to prepare the path that will get you through this day. There are hidden treasures strategically placed along the way. Some of the treasures are trials, designed to shake you free from earth-shackles. Others are blessings that reveal My Presence: sunshine, flowers, birds, friendships, answered prayer. I have not abandoned this sin-wracked world; I am still richly present in it.
Search for deep treasure as you go through this day. You will find Me all along the way.

Colossians 2:2-3
English Standard Version

2 that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, to reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding and the knowledge of God's mystery, which is Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

Verse Thoughts
Chapter 2 of Colossians is written to guard the Colossians against the seductive influence of false philosophies which tended to draw them away from the gospel. All of the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are found in Christ. We need each other. We need to be knit together in love; united in affection. We tend to search and search for meaning when it is all found extensively in Christ.

Isaiah 33:6
English Standard Version

and he will be the stability of your times,
    abundance of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge;
the fear of the Lord is Zion's treasure.

Verse Thoughts
This verse celebrates the wisdom and piety of Hezekiah for he had put his confidence in God. Hezekiah's reign shall not be distinguished for wars and conquests, for commercial enterprise, or for external splendor, but for the prevalence of piety, and the fear of the Lord.

My Prayer
Lord, I want to start each day with the right frame of mind. Help me to not be defeated because of yesterday or the day before or my present condition. Help me to walk through each day, trusting you. Even though trials may come my way, I don't want to get off course and think that you are not working in my life. Thank you for the beauty that you gift me each and every day. Keep me focused on You, trusting You and accepting what You Provide.

Jesus Calling: May 22

When things don't go as you would like, accept the situation immediately. If you indulge in feelings of regret, they can easily spill over the line into resentment. Remember that I am sovereign over your circumstances, and humble yourself under My mighty hand. Rejoice in what I am doing in your life, even though it is beyond your understanding.
I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. In Me you have everything you need, both for this life and for the life to come. Don't let the impact of the world shatter your thinking or draw you away from focusing on Me. The ultimate challenge is to keep fixing your eyes on Me, no matter what is going on around you. When I am central in your thinking, you are able to view circumstances from My perspective.

I Peter 5:6
English Standard Version

Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you.

John 14:6
English Standard Version

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

My Prayer (2018)
Lord, I am trained in this world to think often that only good things are to happen to me. That whatever I like is supposed to then be the straight path. Re-train me Lord. Keep my eyes focused on You. I am reminded of the words you spoke to Solomon as recorded in Proverbs 3: 5-6, "Trust in the Lord with all of your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight." What a wonderful promise. As I don't lean on my own understanding, but instead Trust You, my path is straight. This does not mean my path will be easy, because you have shown me that sometimes calamity and suffering are part of a straight path. It is through trials that you often get my attention. I'm heading later today to see Bobby, who had his 3rd cancer surgery in the past 2 years and he's not even 45 years old. I thank you for Him. He is a light to my life and so many others. His only desire through this process is to walk with you. Yes, sometimes he struggles to understand but he isn't adverse to this being an opportunity to grow stronger in his walk with you. He's willing to do whatever to be more in step with You. Give him strength today and me strength as I spend time with him. Thank you for being with us both every step of our lives.

Jesus Calling: May 21

I, the Creator of the universe, am with you and for you. What more could you need? When you feel some lack, it is because you are not connecting with Me at a deep level. I offer abundant Life; your part is to trust Me, refusing to worry about anything.
It is not so much adverse events that make you anxious as it is your thoughts about these events. Your mind engages in efforts to take control of a situation, to bring about the result you desire. Your thoughts close in on the problem like ravenous wolves. Determined to make things go your way, you forget that I am in charge of your life. The only remedy is to switch your focus from the problem to My Presence. Stop all your striving, and watch to see what I will do. I am the Lord!

Romans 8:31-32
English Standard Version

31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?

Micah 7:7
English Standard Version

But as for me, I will look to the Lord;
    I will wait for the God of my salvation;
    my God will hear me.

My Prayer
Lord, I want to begin every day with You, connecting with You. When I stare at the world and what is going on, it can be depressing, but as I go to Your Word, Spirit, you are speaking to me and reminding me that there is always hope because you have given me a peace that surpasses all understanding.

Jesus Calling: May 20

When your sins weigh heavily upon you, come to Me. Confess your wrongdoing, which I know all about before you say a word. Stay in the Light of My Presence, receiving forgiveness, cleansing, and healing. Remember that I have clothed you in My righteousness, so nothing can separate you from Me. Whenever you stumble or fall, I am there to help you up.
Man's tendency is to hide from his sin, seeking refuge in the darkness. There he indulges in self-pity, denial, self-righteousness, blaming, and hatred. But I am the Light of the world, and My illumination decimates the darkness. Come close to Me and let My Light envelop you, driving out darkness and permeating you with Peace.
I John 1:7
English Standard Version

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.

Verse Thoughts
Verse 5 says, "God is light, and in him is no darkness." I am to walk in the light, walk in God. A true Christian does not walk in darkness, but only in the light. It is this walking in light that allows us to have fellowship with one another. There is an intimacy of being in the Body of Christ that is like nothing else.

Isaiah 61:10
English Standard Version

I will greatly rejoice in the Lord;
my soul shall exult in my God,
for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation;
he has covered me with the robe of righteousness,
as a bridegroom decks himself like a priest with a beautiful headdress,
and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

Verse Thoughts
This is the OT picture of imputed righteousness, the essential heart of the New Covenant. When a penitent sinner recognizes he can't achieve his own righteousness by works, and repents and calls on the mercy of God, the Lord covers him with his own divine righteousness by grace through his faith.

John 8:12
English Standard Version

Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.

My Prayer
Thank you Lord for forgiving all my sin and cleansing me, I am seen by You as pure, and as white as snow. It amazes me because I know the darkness of my life. Sure, I can put on a good front with people most of the time, but you know my inner thoughts, and you can hear the words I often express toward people even as I sit there listening to them talk. Thank you for saving me. The fact that I sinned one time made me not perfect and in need of a substitute. Thank You Jesus for redeeming me so that never again will sin have a hold on me. Yes, I want to live a life that honors you but I'm thankful that no matter what happens, you have covered me with the robe of righteousness.

Jesus Calling: May 19

I want you to know how safe and secure you are in My Presence. That is a fact, totally independent of your feelings. You are on your way to heaven; nothing can prevent you from reaching that destination. There you will see Me face to face, and your Joy will be off the charts by any earthly standards. Even now, you are never separated from Me, though you must see Me through eyes of faith. I will walk with you till the end of time, and onward into eternity.
Although My Presence is a guaranteed promise, that does not necessarily change your feelings. When you forget I am with you, you may experience loneliness or fear. It is through awareness of My Presence that Peace displaces negative feelings. Practice the discipline of walking consciously with Me through each day.

1 Corinthians 13:12
English Standard Version

For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.

Verse Thoughts
The way I see things today, in this world, in this life, has no comparison to my future, in heaven, with God. Right now, all I see is obscured. It is even a riddle, but one day it will clear and without obscurity. There will be clarity.

Psalm 29:11
English Standard Version

May the Lord give strength to his people!
May the Lord bless his people with peace!

Verse Thoughts
This is a verse that can not be looked at alone, but I must see its use in the entire chapter, for it is a concluding thought. "The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders...the voice of the Lord is powerful...the voice of the Lord breaks the cedars...the voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire...shakes the wilderness...makes the deer give birth...the Lord sits enthroned over the flood...sits enthroned as king forever." As I read these verses I should have great comfort that if I believe that God is over all of this world and is working, then he can handle my life and can give me strength and bless me with peace. He is able.

My Prayer
Lord, today has so much to it that is upside down and difficult and challenging. But, my future has clarity. Give me comfort in today and confirm your ways in me. I want to hold your hand...today and each every day.

Romans 13:3-4a - God's Servant for Our Good

Romans 13:3-4a - For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, for he is God's servant for your good.

Message: The purpose of the civil ruler

Time: Written in AD 57 from Greece, to the Christians, both Gentile and Jewish in Rome

What the Lord is Saying:

On one hand, these verses speak to the fact that government is instituted by God and we are to be obedient to the government we are in. But, there is also a purpose for those in government. They are to detect and punish evil and uphold those that do good.  But, unfortunately, many oppress the good. But, this is not God's intent. He does not establish government so as to hurt good people. But, it could be true that he establishes terror to deal with a country that has evil people.

If a government protects evil doers and oppresses the good, then the support of that evil government should cease. But, I think we need to be careful still in our judgment of government and how we speak of it.

Relative Duties
I. Of rulers-to protect the good-to restrain the evil-to reward merit.
II. Of subjects-to respect authority-to do good and thereby to merit praise.
The functions of the ruler
I. To maintain law and order-as the minister of God--for the benefit of man.
II. To punish crime; for this purpose he is invested with the power of life and death-must use it righteously-as responsible to God-for the supression of evil. - Lyth

"For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad" - Even the most wicked, godless governments act as a deterrent to crime. Could it be that God, at times, does institute a terror government, in order to carry out a purpose he has?

"Do what is good" - Peaceful, law abiding citizens need to fear the authorities. Few governments will harm those who obey their laws. In fact, governments usually commend such people.

"God's servant for your good" - By helping restrain evil and protecting life and property, Paul took advantage of his government's role in promoting what is good when he exercised his rights as a Roman citizen to obtain justice.

Promise:My revenge could be a government's justice. Trust God and authorities He has set up and His timing.

Jesus Calling: May 18

Come to Me with your plans held in abeyance (suspension). Worship Me in spirit and in truth, allowing My Glory to permeate your entire being. Trust Me enough to let Me guide you through this day, accomplishing My purposes in My timing. Subordinate your myriad plans to My Master Plan. I am sovereign over every aspect of your life!
The challenge continually before you is to trust Me and search for My way through each day. Do not blindly follow your habitual route, or you will miss what I have prepared for you. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.

John 4:24
English Standard Version

God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.

Verse thoughts
“True” worship is contrasted with the worship regulated by the temporary provisions of the law, especially the separation of Jews and Gentiles and the requirement of temple worship at Jerusalem. The ceremonial and sacrificial aspects of the law were not false; they were temporary and provisional. Worship “in spirit” is worship in the Holy Spirit. He continues the work begun by Jesus. Prominent marks of the age of the Spirit are the removal of the barrier between Jews and Gentiles, and the ability of Christians to worship without the need for a temple of any kind.

Isaiah 55:8-9
New King James Version
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts,
Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord.
“For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
So are My ways higher than your ways,
And My thoughts than your thoughts.

Verse thoughts
God’s thoughts concerning grace exceed human imagination and beyond human comprehension.

My Prayer
Lord, help me to comprehend that what You want for me is my best. I want so badly for my kids to trust my words and you want the same from me; to walk in Your ways, allowing You to consume me.

Jesus Calling: May 17

As you sit quietly in My Presence, remember that I am a God of abundance. I will never run out of resources. My capacity to bless you is unlimited. You live in a world of supply and demand, where necessary things are often scarce. Even if you personally have enough, you see poverty in the world around you. It is impossible for you to comprehend the lavishness of My provisions: the fulness of My glorious riches.
Through spending time in My Presence, you gain glimpses of My overflowing vastness. These glimpses are tiny foretastes of what you will experience eternally in heaven. Even now you have access to as much of Me as you have faith to receive. Rejoice in My abundance--living by faith, not by sight.
Philippians 4:19
English Standard Version

And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

Verse Thoughts
God does not supply like the world often does, according to a person's performance or good deeds or wise decisions. On the contrary, God supplies according to his own standards and ways. God's criteria for blessing is the rich glory in Christ Jesus.

2 Corinthians 5:7
English Standard Version

For we walk by faith, not by sight.

Verse Thoughts
This verse is in the discussion of heaven. What we see in this life can be destroyed, but God has a house for us not made with human hands. So, in verse 7, our walk is not based upon what we can see in this life, but is based upon the unseen. We believe in the existence of the unseen, the invisible. Whether in this life that we see or in the future life that we don't see now, our aim in life is to please Him.

My Prayer
Lord, help me to not be trained always by what I see, but I want to be trained by the promise that You have given me. Thank You for taking care of me. Thank You for giving me daily access to Your abundant riches. Help me to center myself on You and this promise.

Jesus Calling: May 16

I am your Lord! Seek Me as Friend and Lover of your soul, but remember that I am also King of kings--sovereign over all. You can make some plans as you gaze into the day that stretches out before you. But you need to hold those plans tentatively, anticipating that I may have other ideas. The most important thing to determine is what to do right now, instead of scanning the horizon of your life, looking for things that need to be done, concentrate on the task before you and the One who never leaves your side. Let everything else fade into the background. This will unclutter your mind, allowing Me to occupy more and more of your consciousness.
Trust Me to show you what to do when you have finished what you are doing now. I will guide you step by step, as you bend your will to Mine. Thus you stay close to Me on the path of Peace.

Proverbs 19:21
English Standard Version
Many are the plans in the mind of a man,
but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.

Luke 1:79
English Standard Version

to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,
to guide our feet into the way of peace.

My Prayer (2018)
Lord, you are teaching me to talk to you throughout my day. As I talk to people throughout the day, I am to to talk to you. I don't necessarily need to stop, bow my head, but I can just voice to you as I would a friend. You are there, near, and I want you to guide my steps. Lord, I admit that many times I do get ahead of myself, planning my future when things can happen often to disrupt it. Help me God to organize myself. Lord, I do want to talk to you more, throughout my day, even as I go to work and work on tasks, I can talk to you as I do them. Then as I come home help me to not simply be a creature going from entertainment to entertainment but to seek you in my rest. I admit, often I sense your Spirit reminding me to pray and talk to you about me, about the other people in my life and often I don't do this, but instead revert to a habit that I have in my life and suddenly you are sort of squashed. Help me instead to bend my will to Yours.
