Jesus Calling: February 23

Be on guard against the pit of self-pity. When you are weary or unwell, this demonic trap is the greatest danger you face. Don't even go near the edge of the pit. Its edges crumble easily, and before you know it, you are on the way down. It is ever so much harder to get out of the pit than to keep a safe distance from it. That is why i tell you to be on guard.
There are several ways to protect yourself from self-pity. When you are occupied with praising and thanking Me, it is impossible to feel sorry for yourself. Also, the closer you live to Me, the more distance there is between you and the pit. Live in the Light of My Presence by fixing your eyes on Me. Then you will be able to run with endurance the race that is set before you, without stumbling or falling.
Psalm 89:15-16
English Standard Version
Blessed are the people who know the festal shout,
who walk, O Lord, in the light of your face,
who exult in your name all the day
and in your righteousness are exalted.

Hebrews 12:1-2
New American Standard Bible
Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

I think the verses here are a better representation of the need. We are to submit and surrender to the Lord and let His Presence define our lives. Our focus is not to be on self, but on praising the Lord. The point is that I can at times get too focused on me that I forget the value that Christ has in me. I forget the new creature that I am and forget the hand of providence that he has in my life.

My Prayer
Lord, set my ways, my walk on You. Help me to praise Your name throughout the day. You are there with me. You are there protecting me. Let me lay aside the worry and put aside the sin that really tangles me up. Instead turn me to run the race of following after Your commands and ways. You are my model Lord. Fix my eyes on You.

Lord, I admit, I am too focused on my problems right now. I feel almost a tug of war happening between problems, things I can't control, and surrendering to You. Lord, help me to put it in your hands. It is hard to watch your children make decisions that have immediately bad results. And its hard when they don't see any problem. It is like they are blind. But, I see it. i want them to demonstrate good habits -- now. I don't want to wait.

But, you remind me it is a journey and not a sprint. And what i do want to do is give them to you. Help me to not give up and to realize that problems are a part of life. I guess I was getting comfortable and just enjoying good times, but Lord, I can still have peace in my life.

Keep me on guard against the pit of self-pity. Keep me standing up, upright, firmly rooted in your foundation, believing that You can take care of this. Granted, I am impatient. I want it to be over now. Right now. But, though it isn't over, I can still trust You.

Note: The devotion and scriptures are from author Sarah Young. If you haven't already, please purchase the book and support the author.

  1. The pit of self-pity is an easy place to dwell. As Norah discussed yesterday "fixing your eyes on God" and our blessings, however small, creates peace.

Also yesterday, I shared that Joseph's life, where betrayal by family, employer, and friends were met withOUT self-pity makes any of my troubles seem trivial by comparison. Praying that we all can "run the race set before us."

    7. I read some of my and your posts from 2018-19 post my heart robotic surgery but pre-cancer diagnosis and think... "how did we write something fitting for my (perhaps your's too) circumstances 5-6 years later?! Answer of course, the Spirit within prompted and guided by the hand of God, 3 in 1. Mercy and grace with love unending is His promise, and gratitude is the only response. Amen.

    8. So much that is spiritual is explained away by medicine these days. The pit of despair is now labeled “clinical depression.” There are a number of meds to treat it but they all have crazy side effects. MadFox, my prayer is for continued healing for you, and that you would feel the touch of Jesus in that healing.
And may everyone who reads this blog be blessed, and share the blessing of this blog with others. What Sarah Young started and the Payton family added to has spread and helped so many. AMEN!

    10. So true for me as well MadFox. I also often think... how did we write something so perfectly fitting for my circumstances many years later?!
Especially as I read my responses to others' posts and it fits me to a T years later.
It seems like God's Holy Spirit equipped my younger self with provisions to fill the need my older self would have later on during the journey! 🎶 Oh! I Will Sing To The Goodness Of God 🎶 and YES! Occupying my self with praising, thanking and gratitude is the only appropriate response.

  2. Oh yes the pit of self pity can hold you down and way you down. As I read this today I reaffirmed that the only way to avoid or combat this ugly feeling is to remember to keep my eye on the glory the lord praising him in Thanksgiving
Thank you for this word on today! Amen!

  3. I like to pay close attention to my thoughts. Always yielding my Sword. Casting down arguments and every high thing thatexalts itself against the knowledge of God. Taking every thought into captivity, to the obedience of Christ. Punishing all disobedience, until my obedience is made perfect. When i make this my constant practice, i can truly hear the Holy Spirit speak and sing to me. God is so near! Always!

  5. I, too am praying for your Pastor, Greg, Sassy Mom. Awake way too early, again and when I read this, I knew what to do with my lack of sleep.
I'm helping my husband pack and prepare for his first trip out of the country. I miss him already and yet find myself getting short with him, then getting mad at myself. It is the dangerous self-pity, JC is talking about. I could have gone, but chose to stay and do our kitchen, which is taking much longer than I thought. From what I hear, it always does!
Father, help me get out of myself. Let that False Evidence Appearing Real be gone, in the name of Jesus Christ. Help me light-hearted and excited for my Best Man and quit worrying about being alone. I read and re-read your post Bob. Now I ask that I make it my own and believe it. Your words, Maplewood NJ, are powerful. Father, help my unbelief.
Let me focus on Pastor Greg and others and get away from that ledge of self pity. And now...let me go back to sleep as I cast my cares.

Sassy mom- continued prayers for Lisa. She must be one strong lady to continue to work amid her treatment. Prayers for pastor Greg and his entire medical team as well. I actually had this surgery 40 years ago when my appendix ruptured. He's got this!
Norah- praying that you are returning to sweet slumber for a few more hours. Praying for peace for you until your BFF returns. Also praying that your construction project wraps up quickly and to your satisfaction. This can be so stressful, but only if you let it. Keep your eye on the prize. 😉
Prayers for peace for all of you today. Enjoy this Sunday in His name and His presence. Breathe in His strength, exhale your worries.

  9. Thank You dear Lord for another day, the last Sunday of this blessed month. Thank You for all the blessings placed in it for me to claim and enjoy. I Thank You Father.

Feeling sorry for yourself only makes your situatuon worse. Self pity is a lack of trust in God. We should examine ourselves to find out why we feel like that. Does it come from jealousy, seeing people prosper and getting away with wrong doing? Psalm 73:3-4 says, " I envied fhe arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. They have no struggles, their bodies are healthy and strong".
Read Jonah chapter 4. In this chapter we read how Jonah felt sorry for himself when God showed mercy to sinners.
The bible also tells us that the wicked will be punished eventually if they do not repent, but as you walk with the Lord, God is with you. Psalm 73:23, 28 says, " Yet I am always with you, you hold me bt my right hand...it is good to be near God".

Rather than looking inward or outward, we should be looking UPWARD. This is the only way to rid or lay aside the weight of self-pity.
Let's keep our eyes fixed on Jesus and 'run with endurance the race that is set before us, without stumbling of failing'

“A happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit.” (Proverbs 15:13)

Happy and Blessed Sunday. Let's worship the Lord in Spirit and in Truth.

  10. I have absolutely found myself in the pit of self-pity. I am thankful for this devotional to be a reminder to me; when I get close to the edge, I need to take some giant steps backward, as the edges can crumble. Thank you, Lord, for holding my hand always.
I have been working on praising God and being thankful over the past several days, as my husband was out of town for business. I have found it works; the worry that starts to creep in is erased when I fill my thoughts with thanksgiving! Thank you Lord, for this gift.
My son ran cross country in high school and endurance was a necessity. I am reminded in reading this that I need to continue to "run with endurance" keeping my eyes on the finish line of heaven. While I am in this race on Earth, I will continue pacing myself looking to you, Jesus, for your constant support and love. Thank you for holding my hand and showing me The Way yesterday, today and always.

My husband returned yesterday late afternoon, and I am thankful that it was a successful trip for his job, and it was a test of sorts to help strengthen our marriage. Today is our wedding anniversary, and I am looking forward to celebrating in some small way. Past anniversaries have been difficult. This one will be special as I will continue to let God's light shine through and show me the path. CO

  12. Our God knows our need!! I had a 24 hour virus that struck a hard blow on my aging body. Yesterday my wife came down with it. This morning we are too weak to gather with our fellow believers. I mentioned to my wife how depression can amplify the misery we feel.
Then, VOILA!! I open the blog and our Lord has had Sarah's writing waiting for years for this day. Here's a warning of the self pity that can attack us. Thank you God that you know and prepare for our needs WAY before we are in need.
My virus onset was while we were traveling hours from home. He provided a window of relief just long enough to return to the relative comfort of our home.
We had Sarah's book before we found the blog, but didn't use it regularly. I'm a computer junkie and God put this blog before me, knowing our need. Now it's a regular part of our day. Bible Gateway is a supplement that amplifies when passages are referenced in the blog.
I have to admit there are still peaks and valleys in my trust, but daily reminders keep the net higher and the valleys less depressing.
Praise be to you, God for Your people around us, physical and virtual to team with us and keep our eyes focused on THE GOAL of eternity with YOU.

    1. Today's devotion reminds me of riding the MARTA when I lived in Atlanta. When the MARTA was about to take off, but someone was standing too close to the edge of the door and could fall straight down onto the tracks and, hence, oncoming trains, a very loud pre-recorded voice would stay. STOP! STEP AWAY FROM THE DOOR! YOU are delaying the train!
I pray today's devotion loudly and clearly booms the same warning message to me when/if I get too near to the edge of the pit, and before I know it, I am on the way down to some dangerous tracks and delaying my walk with Jesus on the Path He has set for me.
In Jesus' Name I ask. I seek. I knock. I praise. I thank. Amen

Within 24 hours of taking the antibiotic, he was feeling so much better. It was like night and day. Thank You, Jesus!

My middle son and I are continuing our search for a new vehicle since his car was totaled. I thank God that my son was not hurt. Praying for guidance in finding the right car that will accommodate his disabilities and for patience in the search.

Praying with and for all of you, my JC family. May God bless you and keep you in His care.

  22. Loving Father, Thank You that I know to be in Christ Jesus, means that I do not stand before You alone, but with the righteousness of Christ in You. Feelings of guilt and condemnation will betray what I functionally trust for justification before You. Thank You for the reminder that: “Therefore there is now no condemnation [no guilty verdict, no punishment] for those who are in Christ Jesus [who believe in Him as personal Lord and Savior]. For the law of the Spirit of life [which is] in Christ Jesus [the law of our new being] has set you free from the law of sin and of death” Romans 8:1. With the help of the Holy Spirit, I will not let familiarity with this truth strip away its amazing revolutionary power, that You do not accept me on my performance, or on how much fruit I have borne for You lately. You accept me on the basis of what Christ Jesus has done for me! May I work actively to put sin to death and not to earn Your approval, but thank You for the glorious approval that is already mine in Christ Jesus. Thank Lord.

    Blessings and Peace.

      Lyrics:
I believe, for every drop of rain that falls, a flower grows.
I believe that somewhere in the darkest night, a candle glows.
I believe, for everyone who goes astray,
Someone will come to show the way:
      I believe, I believe...

I believe, above a storm, the smallest prayer can still be heard.
I believe that Someone in the great somewhere hears every word.

Every time I hear a newborn baby cry, or touch a leaf, or see the sky,
then I know why I believe.

Good thoughts and truth, Brie. Faith is believing what you cannot see. We trust in God’s promises because we believe in Him. No one can sway me from my faith. When an unbeliever wants to know the reason for my joy and peace I channel the Spirit and He feeds me the words. I’m taken care of. We all are blessed In Christ.

Hebrews tells us...Since we have such a huge crowd watching us from the grandstands, let us strip off anything that slows us down or holds us back, and especially those sins that wrap themselves so tightly around our feet and trip us up.(such as ego's pride, worldly greed, wrath of criticizing, anger judgments, envy of comparisons, lust for my will, gluttony of earthly pleasures and comforts, and sloth, etc.)
Let us run with patience the particular race path that God has set before us. (I cannot have enough breath to run effectively while I am talking or preaching to others)
Keep your eyes on Jesus, our leader and instructor...
      And do what He did.

  26. This devotion really hit home because I fell into a pity pool yesterday because I lost my Dunkin Donuts gift card with $25 on it on my way to the post office. I never have a coffee card so it was such a cool novelty for me. I retraced my steps and stopped in every place on the way to ask if anyone had found it but no one had. I was so upset with myself and I was cranky and not a good witness to my faith. It was because I wasn't being thankful for the blessings I have. My sister opened my eyes to the fact that it was ruining my day, and she got me out of my mood. I let it go and had a nice day thank God. I just hope a homeless person found it or someone who really needed it. Oh well.
I made a nice dinner and we enjoyed it and watched some tv and relaxed together. Looking forward to spending a lot of days with my Mom and Sis. I cooked up a storm for my husband so he's got his dinners ready while I'm at my Mom's. So thankful for Keith's successful surgery and SC's great biopsy results. So much to celebrate! God bless you all.

Sorry about the lost card Jeanne, but you had the victory over the situation because you "Let It Go".
      You did the right thing.
"Let It Go, Let It Go". Little kids all over sang this song from a movie a while ago. Our then 4 year old granddaughter sang it constantly, couldn't get it out of my head!
Sometimes things from the world speak to our life in God.
If it causes you to lose your peace "Let It Go".
If it negatively affects your Christian walk "Let It Go"
If it is sinful "Let It Go".
If someone's attitude upsets you "Let It Go".
Whatever riles you "Let It Go".
Further more "Let Go, and let God". If you're battling to Let It Go, ask for His help, it'll soon be gone.

I remember when I had left my kindle at the gym. No fault but my own. Of course, when I called, it was nowhere to be found. Then I had an epiphany...I thought whoever picked it up must have needed it as I not only had my Jesus Calling book in my kindle but a couple of other Christian books. That realization made me smile and feel it went to someone in need.

"Live in the Light of My Presence by fixing your eyes on Me. Then you will be able to run with endurance the race that is set before you, without stumbling or falling."

Hebrews 12:1-2 Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

  38. A colleague and I were once hosted at a riverside restaurant in Newport, KY.
It was July, beautiful weather. For the mains I had Gumbo. Halfway through I realized I was in trouble and regretted the shrimp I had eaten before the Gumbo, and no way could I have dessert!
Fortunately the meal was leisurely, with lots of banter among us engineers and I slowly managed to finish the Gumbo; absolutely delicious! But O boy! Was I full, stuffed to the gills! Absolutely no room to eat or drink anything else. In fact that night I had difficulty laying down to sleep, so slept sitting up.
If, as full as I was with Gumbo, I was full of the Lord, there would be no place in me for self-pity or despondency.
So I need to "be filled with all the fullness of God"
    Eph 3:17-21:
"I pray that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the holy ones what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God."

  43. SO many prayers and reasons to give thanks. Dear MadFox, my DH and I will be praying specifically for you and your results. You've got this, Brother. Praying for your safety, Audra, for you, Jeanne and Brie and picturing a perfect Liver Panel for you, Jan Gridley. That will HAVE to involve God b/c I have no idea what that looks like, but I totally pray and believe yours will be PERFECT!
We've been praying for a dear friend in our community and though I haven't posted particulars on our blog (shame on me! Geez.), his name is Jeff B. His sweet wife and adorable daughters, along with him have been 'members' of our family for years (the girls were students of my Teacher DH, his wife and I have made Chicken Tetrazzini together) and all of us have celebrated the holidays together, many times. Jeff has been very sick and we've been praying for him daily. I asked the daughter posting to tell us how to specifically pray and this evening, she sent the following. So, please believe with me, JC Prayer Warriors for these specific resolutions for our dear brother in Christ, Jeff B:
"*Please pray specifically for the pain levels to be under control so he can eventually come home
*Pray for the pancreas to heal!!! Absolute healing on earth, amen!
*Pray for absolutely no signs of infection and to remove any bad “bugs” from his body
*Pray for the drain tube and for the drainage to start slowing down/tail of the pancreas to close up"
As with our dear Jan Gridley, I don't know (& you may not either), what a lot of this means; however, that does not diminish the strength of our prayers. GOD KNOWS. And, He gave His only begotten Son so that we may have life and have it more than abundant.
Love and Blessings to each of you. Even without knowing all of the specifics, I know when I say, "Bless my Jesus Calling Family, in the name of Jesus Christ," that His will WILL be done!

  45. Dear Norah! Praying for you and Loren. Get some rest. Joining in on all your prayers for dear MadFox’s good results, traveling safety for Audra and her dear ones, Brie’s strength, healing and guidance, and Jan’s good liver panel, and now for Jeff B that our great Healer will heal his pancreas and remove his pain and rid his body of infection and remove all bad bugs from his body and for the drain tube to function properly so drainage will start slowing down and the tail of the pancreas will close up. We may not understand but God sure does! Thank You Jesus.

  46. Posted at very top thread as a reply, too... but after reading all the prayers said for me for the past 3+ years. Wanted to thank all of you. It has been you JC prayer warriors and my "non-cyberspace" (ha ha) friends' prayers that I'm convinced have helped my healing and great response. Simply put: Agape to you, grateful for you, peace to you. Amen.

Mercy and grace with love unending is His promise, and gratitude is the only response. Amen.

  49. The LORD is my Shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His names' sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. (Psalm 23:1-4).

  56. The Guardrails that keep us from going down into the self-pity pot are made up of recounting ALL His Miracles that we have already received in our lives along with ALL His fortune of blessings (size does not matter for the count)
If we managed to slip under the Guardrails, then the rope out consists of the same materials.
Whether by Guardrail or by Rope, Let the Accounting begin.
