Jesus Calling: October 29

Linger in My Presence a while. Rein in your impulses to plunge into the day's activities. Beginning your day alone with Me is essential preparation for success. A great athlete takes time to prepare himself mentally for the feat ahead of him before he moves a muscle. Similarly, your time of being still in my presence equips you for the day ahead of you. Only I know what will happen to you this day. I have arranged the events you will encounter as you go along your way. If you are not adequately equipped for the journey, you will grow weary and lose heart. Relax with me while I ready you for action.
Ephesians 2:10
English Standard Version

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

Hebrews 12:3
English Standard Version

Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted.

My Prayer
Lord, may I learn to rest in you and not just jump into the day without taking a moment to center myself on You and Your Word. The newspaper, the TV, my phone -- this should not be how I start my day, but rather I want to start it with You, in your Presence, talking to you. And then I can embrace the day as you Provide.

Jesus Calling: October 28

Do not expect to be treated fairly in this life. People will say and do hurtful things to you, things that you don't deserve. When someone mistreats you, try to view it as an opportunity to grow in grace. See how quickly you can forgive the one who has wounded you. Don't be concerned about setting the record straight. Instead of obsessing about other people's opinions of you, keep your focus on Me. Ultimately, it is My view of you that counts.
     As you concentrate on relating to Me, remember that I have clothed you in My righteousness and holiness. I see you attired in these radiant garments, which I brought for you with My blood. This also is not fair; it is pure gift. When others treat you unfairly, remember that My ways with you are much better than fair. My ways are Peace and Love, which I have poured out into your heart by My Spirit

Colossians 3:13
English Standard Version

bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.

Isaiah 61:10
English Standard Version

I will greatly rejoice in the Lord;
    my soul shall exult in my God,
for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation;
    he has covered me with the robe of righteousness,
as a bridegroom decks himself like a priest with a beautiful headdress,
    and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

Ephesians 1:7-8
English Standard Version

In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight

Romans 5:5
English Standard Version

and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

Proverbs 16:33 - Lord Over Chance

Proverbs 16:33 - The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord.

Message: - Lord Over Chance

Time: It seems that Proverbs was written and then compiled sometime between the tenth and sixth centuries B.C. Proverbs was probably written during the reign of Solomon, 971-931 B.C.

What the Lord is Saying:

As I read through scripture it is clear that the mind of God is different from the mind of man. Man tends to reason most of the time that in order for God to be real then he must fit into our thinking. The fact that He is different and stands outside of our reasoning abilities and knowledge makes many think he is therefore not real. Again, there is the trust and belief that there is something greater than yourself. The Christian believes that the only way to define life is through a Creator. The non-believer often makes the assumption that life is not left to a creator but from natural phenomena.

It is interesting and in this verse, in Proverbs, both sides of the coin--lot/chance and ordained from God--seem to be presented.

The lot is cast
This was a common form of divination in the ancient world in order to determine the divine will of certain matters. We do this today thinking often if we flip open the Bible, the verse it lands on will be our verse for the day or even for our life. And gambling has become such a way of life for many people; the whole idea with gambling is chance and this thinking then seeps into life as well.

This is one of the things I find interesting about life. There are constantly different messages that are sent in life and they all play into the way we live life and make decisions and think about our lives. the more we spend our time away from the Bible and away from the things of God, the less we think about God and His ways and the more our lives end up getting defined by the world.

I feel a slave to this more and more. I let things happen versus being more intentional for things to happen.

The casting of lots was a common form of divination in the ancient world, a device used to discover the will of the gods. This method of discerning the will of the true God was not forbidden in ancient Israel, for the Lord ruled even over lots.

Every decision is from the Lord.
When the lot was properly used the answer was not a matter of chance, but came from God. It is not that casting lots is wrong or bad. Proverbs 18:18 says, "the cast lot puts an end to strife and decides between the mighty ones." Decisions need to be made in life and the casting of lots provides a decision.

What this verse states is the casting of lots is a decision from the Lord. I think often in life we just feel it is easier for our brains to state that outcomes are by chance or even based upon karma (from Hinduism or Buddhism whereby the sum of a person's actions is this life or a previous life are seen as deciding their fate in future existences, which could be this life or another life). I think we often have these conclusions because we are comfortable with the thought that we decide our fates.

It reminds me of those pictures that I have seen: there is the one where one person sees an old lady while another sees a young girl. Both are looking at the same picture and both are seeing two different types of women. As I read scripture it seems clear that God has determined outcomes and he has knowledge of results. But, also as I read scripture I see that man, based upon his own reasoning abilities, thinks he will reap what he sows. Can these ideas coexist? I think so. I think man can see and define things from his own perspective, but ultimately, he can also see that God is in charge. I don't think man can take on a passive approach to life and not try. I believe God uses man to effect change. He doesn't have to, but he does. I don't think God intends man to not be involved in His outcomes.

Note: I think this is a difficult text for my finite mind to comprehend. It is difficult for me to think that God does ordain all activity. So, is there no free will? Just our perception that there is. Our brain is finite so this is how we think and live, but this verse gives the impressions that every decision is from the Lord. That seems hard to fathom. There are horrible atrocities that have occurred throughout human history. There are many things that have occurred that we have no knowledge of. There are many trying to make sure these things don't happen again. There is the phrase, "The human spirit" which gives the idea that man is desiring for things to be more holistic and purposeful and preserving life. But, is this actually God in man exerting his will of things more for his glory? God definitely intends his people, that He created and made in His image, to see that their lives are under His control. Is that man's purpose? Does God give man the faculty to think and live, but all the while "every decision is from the Lord." Those are two ways of looking at life that do seem hard to wrap my mind around. Ephesians 1:11 says, "also we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to His purpose who works all things after the counsel of His will." It is clear Paul believed this. His words speak of being "predestined" or "called" or "created for good works which God decided beforehand." And then the whole idea of Christ dying for us means that salvation is not of us, but of Him alone.

Promise: From TableTalk, "February 18, 2015" - "There is no ultimate randomness in the world. Even outcomes that seem to be pure chance, such as the casting of a lot (throwing a pair of dice) are divinely ordained." Though I question events and circumstances and outcomes, my goal always is to trust God for his outcome.

Jesus Calling: October 27

As you become increasingly aware of My Presence, you find it easier to discern the way you should go. This is one of the practical benefits of living close to Me. Instead of wondering about what is on the road ahead or worrying about what you should do if . . . or when . . . , you can concentrate on staying in communication with Me. When you actually arrive at a choice-point, I will show you which direction to go.
     Many people are so preoccupied with future plans and decisions that they fail to see choices they need to make today. Without any conscious awareness, they make their habitual responses. People who live this way find a dullness creeping into their lives. They sleepwalk through their days, following well-worn paths of routine.
     I, the Creator of the universe, am the most creative Being imaginable. I will not leave you circling in deeply rutted paths. Instead, I will lead you along fresh trails of adventure, revealing to you things you did not know. Stay in communication with Me. Follow My guiding Presence.

Psalm 32:8
English Standard Version

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
    I will counsel you with my eye upon you.

Genesis 1:1
English Standard Version

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

My Prayer
Lord, why don't I pray more? I spend so much time of  my day trying to figure out the next decision or the next turn in the road for me, or a friend or a family member -- and you meanwhile desire me to talk to you about it, to surrender it to you and allow you to work a solution. Help me to stay in better communication with You. The problem Lord is I don't trust you; I don't think that praying to you will make that big of a difference and for that I am sorry; please, forgive me. You created me and everything I see so help me with my unbelief so that I'm turning to you first, not as a last resort.

Jesus Calling: October 26

Come to Me when you are hurting, and I will soothe your pain. Come to Me when you are joyful, and I will share your Joy, multiplying it many times over. I am All you need, just when you need it. Your deepest desires find fulfillment in Me alone.
     This is the age of self-help, Bookstores abound with books about "taking care of number one," making oneself the center of all things. The main goal of these methodologies is to become self-sufficient and confident. You however, have been called to take a "road less traveled": continual dependence on Me. True confidence comes from knowing you are complete in My Presence. Everything you need has its counterpart in Me.

John 15:5
English Standard Version

I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

James 1:4
English Standard Version

And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

My Prayer
Lord, I am hurting today. Granted, it is emotional, concerned about my son and his current poor choices he is making with his life. You know about it. We've talked about it, but it hurts. It hurts to see him throwing his life away at the age of 15, with not a care in the world. Soothe my pain. Why is it I just come to you when its bad? Rarely do I come to you and celebrate victories. Yet, you are reminding me of this. You are reminding me that I need to keep coming to you. I want to be centered on you and run to you, no matter the experience and have confidence that you will take care of the problem. I do want to depend on You, not me and not even on what an author says about how I should handle this or that situation that is under your control. You are all I need. I want to believe that and live like that every moment of the day.

Update: October 26, 2017, 9:50am, Albuquerque, NM - I appreciate your prayers and standing in the gap with me. My son is 16 and still a challenge, but also a joy. His mother and I continue to commit him to the Lord, praying Ezekiel 36:26 for him daily and we are thankful for friends and many that support. We dis-enrolled him from school last month and he's doing an online public school with mostly my wife's help, as he is more accepting of her. We are praying for good people in his life, preferring people that honor God with their life. His idol of choice is Cannibas and we feel it has a big hold on him these last 2 years.  He was in substance abuse counseling for 16 months, but recently quit that since he has no desire to be sober. We understand that in life not everything works out the way we want it to, but this never changes our dependence on God and our trust and belief on Him to do the impossible and no matter the outcome, we want to continue to abide in Him. Thank you.

Update: October 26, 2019 - My son is 18 now; he graduated from high school and is working now at a local restaurant. The bottom line is I love my son and nothing will ever change this. All of us have a tendency to turn to things not named God to cope with life and the struggles and disappointments and hurts we experience - but God remains the only anchor and help and the only one that brings true peace. While it hurts for anyone to not see this truth and naturally it hurts the most for those closest to us -- my response remains the same - love people, love God, and pray that more people, including my son, will love God more than anything else and turn to Him throughout all of the turns of life. Thank you for coming alongside me in this journey.

Jesus Calling: October 25

I am God with you, for all time and throughout eternity. Don't let the familiarity of that concept numb its impact on your consciousness. My perpetual Presence with you can be a continual source of Joy, springing up and flowing out in streams of abundant Life. Let your mind reverberate with meanings of My Names: Jesus--the Lord saves, and Emmanuel--God with us.  Strive to remain conscious of My Presence even in your busiest moments. Talk with Me about whatever delights you, whatever upsets you, whatever is on your mind. These tiny steps of daily disciplines, taken one after the other, will keep you close to Me on the path of Life.

Matthew 1:21, 23
English Standard Version

21 “She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.
23 Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
    and they shall call his name Immanuel”

Acts 2:28
English Standard Version

You have made known to me the paths of life;
    you will make me full of gladness with your presence.

My Prayer
Lord, you are my Savior. You have saved me. Continually, each day, I fight sin in my life. It is present, but it is also a reminder that I need you and you have saved me. You didn't just save me, but you are with me, throughout life. Keep me near to you. Even in the busiest moments of my life, help me to know that You are near, fighting for me, cheering for me, carrying me, taking me through the struggles of life. Talk to Me and help me to talk to You so that you are the one in my life that I am speaking to daily. This is how I stay close to you by being reminded that you are close to me.

Jesus Calling: October 24

Lie down in green pastures of Peace. Learn to unwind whenever possible, resting in the Presence of your Shepherd. This electronic age keeps My children "wired" much of the time, too tense to find Me in the midst of their moments. I built into your very being the need for rest. How twisted the world has become when people feel guilty about meeting this basic need! How much time and energy they waste by being always on the go, rather than taking time to seek My direction for their lives.
     I have called you to walk with Me down paths of Peace. I want you to blaze a trail for others who desire to live in My peaceful Presence. I have chosen you less for your strengths than for your weaknesses, which amplify your need for Me. Depend on Me more and more, and I will shower Peace on all your paths.

Psalm 23:1-3
English Standard Version

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
    He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
    He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness
    for his name's sake.

Genesis 2:2-3
English Standard Version

And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation.

Luke 1:79

English Standard Version

to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,
    to guide our feet into the way of peace.

My Prayer
Lord, forgive me for being distracted by technology and always filling my time with this website or this application or that game or that piece of media. Lord, instead of focusing on your call for my life, I spend too much time just being entertained. But Lord, you remind me that peace isn't found through a screen but through a relationship with You. Keep me on the right course. With you as my shepherd, I shall not want. Show me that rest is not simply staring at screens, but resting with you, reading your Word, meditating on it and serving your people. I want to live in the way of peace so change my habits so that I always glorify You.

Jesus Calling: October 23

As you turn your attention to Me, feel the Light of My Presence shining upon you. Open your mind and heart to receive My heavenly smile of approval. Let My gold-tinged Love wash over you and soak into the depths of your being. As you are increasingly filled with My Being, you experience joyous union with Me: I in you, and you in Me. Your Joy-in-Me and My Joy-in-you become intertwined and inseparable. I suffuse your soul with Joy in My Presence; at My right hand there are pleasures forevermore

John 17:20-23
English Standard Version

20 “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, 23 I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me.

Verse thoughts:
We are to be united as one in the Body of Christ. Our Lord prayed for this, for us. We are to have union with Christ and the Father in Him, through the Holy Spirit dwelling in us. Wars often erupt between different religions, but may the people of God, through Jesus Christ not be fighting one another but coming together in unity so that they can clearly see this love. This is what the Lord prayed for us.

Psalm 16:11
New King James Version

You make known to me the path of life;
    in your presence there is fullness of joy;
    at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

My Prayer
Lord, why is it that division and separation is suddenly what marks our lives. Lord, you prayed that we would be a people of community and would come together as one. Granted, the truth of the Gospel is to be our first and foremost foundation. We are to be a people that stand for truth, but once we do, we need to be a people that focuses more on what we agree on and less on what we disagree on. We want to be a people that you are proud of. Jesus you taught us to turn the other cheek. You tell us always that vengeance is yours and you will deliver those in affliction. Help us Lord, Help me Lord to turn the other cheek and let you take care of outcomes. Help us be a people of unity.

Jesus Calling: October 22

No matter what your circumstances may be, you can find Joy in My Presence. On some days Joy is generously strewn along your life-path, glistening in the sunlight. On days like that, being content is as simple as breathing the next breath or taking the next step. Other days are overcast and gloomy; you feel the strain of the journey, which seems endless. Dull gray rocks greet your gaze and cause your feet to ache. Yet Joy is still attainable. Search for it as for hidden treasure.
     Begin by remembering that I have created this day; it is not a chance occurrence. Recall that I am present with you whether you sense My Presence or not. Then, start talking with Me about whatever is on your mind. Rejoice in the fact that I understand you perfectly, and I know exactly what you are experiencing. As you continue communicating with Me, your mood will gradually lighten. Awareness of My marvelous Companionship can infuse Joy into the grayest day.

Psalm 21:6
English Standard Version

For you make him most blessed forever;
    you make him glad with the joy of your presence.

Proverbs 2:4
English Standard Version

if you seek it like silver
    and search for it as for hidden treasures

Jesus Calling: October 21

To live in My Presence consistently, you must expose and expel your rebellious tendencies. When something interferes with your plans or desires, you tend to resent the interference. Try to become aware of each resentment, however petty it may seem. Don't push those unpleasant feelings down; instead, let them come to the surface where you can deal with them. Ask My Spirit to increase your awareness of resentful feelings. Bring them boldly into the Light of My Presence, so that I can free you from them.
     The ultimate solution to rebellious tendencies is submission to My authority over you. Intellectually you rejoice in My sovereignty, without which the world would be a terrifying place. But when My sovereign will encroaches on your little domain of control, you often react with telltale resentment.
     The best response to losses or thwarted hopes is praise: The Lord gives and the Lord takes away. Blessed be the name of the Lord. Remember that all good things--your possessions, your family and friends, your health and abilities, your time--are gifts from Me. Instead of feeling entitled to all these blessings, respond to them with gratitude. Be prepared to let go of anything I take from you, but never let go of My hand!

Psalm 139:23-24
English Standard Version

23 Search me, O God, and know my heart!
    Try me and know my thoughts!
24 And see if there be any grievous way in me,
    and lead me in the way everlasting!

I Peter 5:6
English Standard Version

Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you,

Job 1:21
New King James Version

And he said:
“Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
And naked shall I return there.
The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away;
Blessed be the name of the Lord.”

My Prayer
Lord, help me to not simply follow You according to my terms. At times, there will be unwelcome situations that come into my life, so that you may teach me something. Help me to not rebel because I don't think at the time it is something I want. Help me to have the response of Job: The Lord gives and the Lord takes away. Blessed be the name of the Lord. Lord, I want to humble myself under your mighty hand and allow you to Search me, O God. Try me and know my mind and if there be any wicked way in me, pull me to the rock that is higher than I.

Jesus Calling: October 20

I am your living God, far more abundantly alive than the most vivacious person you know. The human body is wonderfully crafted, but gravity and the inevitable effects of aging weigh it down. Even the most superb athlete cannot maintain his fitness over many decades. Lasting abundant life can be found in Me alone. Do not be anxious about the weakness of your body. Instead, view it as the prelude to My infusing energy into your being.
     As you identify more and more fully with Me. My Life becomes increasingly intertwined with yours. Though the process of aging continues, inwardly you grow strong with the passing years. Those who live close to Me develop an inner aliveness that makes them seem youthful in spite of their years. Let My Life shine through you, as you walk in the Light with Me.

Psalm 139:14
English Standard Version

I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Wonderful are your works;
    my soul knows it very well.

Colossians 1:29
English Standard Version

For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.

I John 1:7
English Standard Version

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.

My Prayer
Thank you O God that I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Help me to never doubt your creation. I often only praise your creation when I'm standing in a beautiful setting, but your creation is always correct, no matter how I may describe it. Even thorns have been fearfully and wonderfully made. Help me to always live close to You. I pray that my faith does not change because of my circumstances. There will be tough days, tough roads, uncertain paths, unknown outcomes, but help me God to always stay close to you, realizing that you are still working in me, no matter how it may look. You are a great God and help me never to stop thanking you.

Jesus Calling: October 19

Come to Me with your defenses down, ready to be blessed and filled with My Presence. Relax, and feel the relief of being totally open and authentic with Me. You have nothing to hide and nothing to disclose, because I know everything about you already. You can have no other relationship like this one. Take time to savor its richness basking in My golden Light.
     One of the worst consequences of the Fall is the elaborate barriers people erect between themselves and others. Facades abound in the world, even in My Body, the church. Sometimes, church is the last place where people feel free to be themselves. They cover up with Sunday clothes and Sunday smiles. They feel relief when they leave because of the strain of false fellowship. The best antidote to this artificial atmosphere is practicing My Presence at church. Let your primary focus be communing with Me, worshiping Me, glorifying Me. Then you will be able to smile at others with My Joy and love them with My Love.

I John 1:5-7
English Standard Version

This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.

Exodus 33:14
English Standard Version

And he said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”

Philippians 4:8-9
English Standard Version

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.

Jesus Calling: October 18

Go gently through this day, keeping your eyes on Me. I will open up the way before you, as you take steps of trust along your path. Sometimes the way before you appears to be blocked. If you focus on the obstacle or search for a way around it, you will probably go off course. Instead, focus on Me, the Shepherd who is leading you along your life-journey. Before you know it, the "obstacle" will be behind you and you will hardly know how you passed through it.
     That is the secret of success in My kingdom. Although you remain aware of the visible world around you, your primary awareness is of Me. When the road before you looks rocky, you can trust Me to get you through that rough patch. My Presence enables you to face each day with confidence.

John 10:14-15
English Standard Version

14 I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep.

Isaiah 26:7
English Standard Version

Psalm 119:25-32 - The Power and Desire to Obey

Psalm 119:25-32
25 My soul cleaves to the dust; revive me according to Your word.
26 I have told of my ways, and You have answered me; teach me Your statutes.
27 Make me understand the way of Your precepts, so I will meditate on Your wonders.
28 My soul weeps because of grief; strengthen me according to Your word.
29 Remove the false way from me, and graciously grant me Your law.
30 I have chosen the faithful way; I have placed Your ordinances before me.
31 I cling to Your testimonies; O Lord, do not put me to shame!
32 I shall run the way of Your commandments, for You will enlarge my heart.

Message: The Power and Desire to Obey

Time: The psalms were written by many different people across a period of a thousand years in Israel's history. They are thought to have been compiled and put together in their present form by some unknown editor shortly after the captivity ended about 537 B.C.

What the Lord is Saying:

My soul cleaves to the dust; revive me according to Your word. (v. 25)
Bring life into me, according to Your Word.

I have told of my ways, and You have answered me; teach me Your statutes. (v. 26)
I share. You listen. Now teach me.

Make me understand the way of Your precepts, so I will meditate on Your wonders. (v. 27)
I don't want to just be an ear, I want to be a mouth. Help Me Lord to understand the way of Your precepts. I want to mediate on all that you have done. Re-train me.

My soul weeps because of grief; strengthen me according to Your word. (v. 28)
I am sad, but bring me back to strength, according to Your Word.

Remove the false way from me, and graciously grant me Your law. (v. 29)
Remove all that is false from me and give me the truth of Your law.

I have chosen the faithful way; I have placed Your ordinances before me. (v. 30)
I choose life. I choose faithfulness. Your ways are before me.

I cling to Your testimonies; O Lord, do not put me to shame! (v. 31)
I cling to what You have done. Do not put me to shame!

I shall run the way of Your commandments, for You will enlarge my heart. (v.32)
I want to run the way of Your commandments. Through that running, you will enlarge my heart.

I think about this passage and you can't help but try to figure out what it is the Psalmist was thinking. And so as I read it I think of what it means to me. It sounds like someone that recognizes their thoughts can defeat them at times. Verse 29 says keep me from lying to myself. Keep me from speaking words that are lies but I take as truths. It seems like often God is wanting to remind us that we need to keep our eyes focused on him and his precepts and his commandments and his promises. Too easily, I am distracted by things and thoughts and ideas that are not from God but are from other places that I experience in my life. And if I'm not careful those inputs begin to shape who I am. This passage reminds me that I have made a commitment to God. At one point in my life it all came together and I understood the truth of the gospel in my need for a savior and redeemer and protector. And as I experience life I should not forget God. Don't forget where you have come from. Bring God into every room of your life, into every room, My heart Christs home. God is really to be the one that rescues us from our circumstances and often our thoughts. Psalm 119:28 says, "I weep with sorrow; encourage me by your word." You know, I can spend every day in the word and surround myself with Christian music and Christian friends, but when push comes to shove and when sorrow enters my life, am I running to God, am I seeking to be encouraged by his word and his promises, or do I rather continue to sustain life based upon my own natural definitions. I think of trials that I'm experiencing right now or that may be in the life of my children, am I seeking encouragement from God's word. Have I made it my mission to pursue his commands? It says in verse 32 that he will expand my understanding.

Promise: Reading God's word is not enough. It expands my understanding, it encourages me, it determines the life I live.

Jesus Calling: October 17

Anxiety is a result of envisioning the future without Me. So the best defense against worry is staying in communication with Me. When you turn your thoughts toward Me, you can think much more positively. Remember to listen, as well as to speak, making your thoughts a dialogue with Me.
     If you must consider upcoming events, follow these rules: 1) Do not linger in the future, because anxieties sprout up like mushrooms when you wander there. 2) Remember the promise of My continual Presence; include Me in any imagery that comes to mind. This mental discipline does not come easily, because you are accustomed to being god of your fantasies. However, the reality of My Presence with you, now and forevermore, outshines any fantasy you could ever imagine.

Luke 12:22-26
English Standard Version

22 And he said to his disciples, “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat, nor about your body, what you will put on. 23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing. 24 Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! 25 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? 26 If then you are not able to do as small a thing as that, why are you anxious about the rest?

Ephesians 3:20-21
English Standard Version

20 Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

Jesus Calling: October 16

Look to Me continually for help, comfort, and companionship. Because I am always by your side, the briefest glance can connect you with Me. When you look to Me for help, it flows freely from My Presence. This recognition of your need for Me, in small matters as well as in large ones, keeps you spiritually alive.
     When you need comfort, I love to enfold you in My arms. I enable you not only to feel comforted but also to be a channel through whom I comfort others. Thus you are doubly blessed, because a living channel absorbs some of whatever flows through it.
     My constant Companionship is the piece de resistance: the summit of salvation blessings. No matter what losses you experience in your life, no one can take away this glorious gift.

Psalm 34:4-6
English Standard Version

I sought the Lord, and he answered me
    and delivered me from all my fears.
Those who look to him are radiant,
    and their faces shall never be ashamed.
This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him
    and saved him out of all his troubles.

Psalm 105:4
English Standard Version

Seek the Lord and his strength;
    seek his presence continually!

2 Corinthians 1:3-4
English Standard Version

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

Jesus Calling: October 15

Try to stay conscious of Me as you go step by step through this day. My Presence with you is both a promise and a protection. My final statement just before I ascended into heaven was: Surely I am with you always. That promise was for all of My followers, without exception.
     The promise of My Presence is a powerful protection. As you journey through your life, there are numerous pitfalls along the way. Many voices clamor for your attention, enticing you to go their way. A few steps away from your true path are pits of self-pity and despair, plateaus of pride and self-will. If you take your eyes off Me and follow another's way, you are in grave danger. Even well-meaning friends can lead astray if you let them usurp My place in your life. The way to stay on the path of Life is to keep your focus on Me. Awareness of My Presence is your best protection.

Matthew 28:20
English Standard Version

teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.

Hebrews 12:1-2
English Standard Version

1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

Jesus Calling: October 14

Be prepared to suffer for Me, in My Name. All suffering has meaning in My kingdom. Pain and problems are opportunities to demonstrate your trust in Me. Bearing your circumstances bravely--even thanking Me for them--is one of the highest forms of praise. This sacrifice of thanksgiving rings golden-toned bells of you throughout heavenly realms. On earth also, your patient suffering sends out ripples of good tidings in ever-widening circles.
     When suffering strikes, remember that I am sovereign and that I can bring good out of everything. Do not try to run from pain or hide from problems. Instead, accept adversity in My Name, offering it up to Me for My purposes. Thus, your suffering gains meaning and draws you closer to Me. Joy emerges from the ashes of adversity through your trust and thankfulness.
James 1:2-4
English Standard Version

Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

Psalm 107:21-22
English Standard Version

21 Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
    for his wondrous works to the children of man!
22 And let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving,
    and tell of his deeds in songs of joy!

My Prayer: Lord, I admit that understanding value in suffering is hard for me to comprehend, especially when so much of the world that I live in trains me in the idea that entertainment, pleasure, comfort, and safety is not simply what we all want, but what we all think must be present at all times in our lives. Sometimes, the greatest obstacle I have in talking to people about You is the idea that you allow suffering to occur. Yet, you show me continually good that comes through it, though I know other suffering I won't understand till I reach the other side. I'm not sure I will ever do what you ask and that is, embrace the suffering, but with your help and strength I do want to trust You through it. Jesus walked into Jerusalem knowing that he would be spit on, mocked and then deeply wounded to the point of death. As much as I hate pain, I really can't comprehend the extent to which he suffered and that he would then do it to set me free. So in that suffering, something really good resulted. O Lord...I can't wait to be welcomed Home.

Jesus Calling: October 13

Take time to be still in My Presence. The more hassled you feel, the more you need this sacred space of communion with Me. Breathe slowly and deeply. Relax in My holy Presence while My Face shines upon you.  This is how you receive My Peace, which I always proffer to you.
     Imagine the pain I feel when My children tie themselves up in anxious knots, ignoring My gift of Peace. I died a criminal's death to secure this blessing for you. Receive it gratefully; hide it in your heart. My Peace is an inner treasure, growing within you as you trust in Me. Therefore, circumstances cannot touch it. Be still, enjoying Peace in My Presence.

Psalm 46:10
English Standard Version

“Be still, and know that I am God.
    I will be exalted among the nations,
    I will be exalted in the earth!”

Numbers 6:25-26
English Standard Version

25 the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you;
26 the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.

Jesus Calling: October 12

Beware of seeing yourself through other people's eyes. There are several dangers to this practice. First of all, it is nearly impossible to discern what others actually think of you. Moreover, their views of you are variable: subject to each viewer's spiritual, emotional, and physical condition. The major problem with letting others define you is that it borders on idolatry. Your concern to please others dampens your desire to please Me, your Creator.
     It is much more real to see yourself through My eyes. My gaze upon you is steady and sure, untainted by sin. Through My eyes you can see yourself as one who is deeply, eternally loved. Rest in My loving gaze, and you will receive deep Peace. Respond to My loving Presence by worshiping Me in spirit and in truth

Hebrews 11:6
English Standard Version

And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

John 4:23-24
English Standard Version

23 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.

Jesus Calling: October 11

I am the culmination of all your hopes and desires. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last: who is and was and is to come. Before you knew Me, you expressed your longing for Me in hurtful ways. You were ever so vulnerable to the evil around you in the world. But now My Presence safely shields you, enfolding you in My loving arms. I have lifted you out of darkness into My marvelous light.
     Though I have brought many pleasures into your life, not one of them is essential. Receive My blessings with open hands. Enjoy My good gifts, but do not cling to them. Turn your attention to the Giver of all good things, and rest in the knowledge that you are complete in Me. The one thing you absolutely need is the one things you can never lose. My Presence with you.

Psalm 62:5-8
English Standard Version

For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence,
    for my hope is from him.
He only is my rock and my salvation,
    my fortress; I shall not be shaken.
On God rests my salvation and my glory;
    my mighty rock, my refuge is God.
Trust in him at all times, O people;
    pour out your heart before him;
    God is a refuge for us. Selah

Revelation 1:8
English Standard Version

“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”

I Peter 2:9
New King James Version

But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;

James 1:17
English Standard Version

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.

Jesus Calling: October 10

Trust Me enough to let things happen without striving to predict or control them. Relax, and refresh yourself in the Light of My everlasting Love. My Love-Light never dims, yet you are often unaware of My radiant Presence. When you protect yourself into the future, rehearsing what you will do or say, you are seeking to be self-sufficient: to be adequate without My help. This is a subtle sin--so common that it usually slips by unnoticed.
     The alternative is to live fully in the present, depending on Me each moment. Rather than fearing your inadequacy, rejoice in My abundant supply. Train your mind to seek My help continually, even when you feel competent to handle something by yourself. Don't divide your life into things you can do by yourself and things that require My help. Instead, learn to rely on Me in every situation. This discipline will enable you to enjoy life more and to face each day confidently.

Psalm 37:3-6
English Standard Version

Trust in the Lord, and do good;
    dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.
Delight yourself in the Lord,
    and he will give you the desires of your heart.
Commit your way to the Lord;
    trust in him, and he will act.
He will bring forth your righteousness as the light,
    and your justice as the noonday.

Jesus Calling: October 9

You have been on a long, uphill journey, and your energy is almost spent. Though you have faltered at times, you have not let go of My hand. I am pleased with your desire to stay close to Me. There is one thing, however, that displeases Me: your tendency to complain. You may talk to Me as much as you like about the difficulty of the path we are following. I understand better than anyone else the stresses and strains that have afflicted you. You can ventilate safely to Me, because talking with Me tempers your thoughts and helps you see things from My perspective.
     Complaining to others is another matter altogether. It opens the door to deadly sins such as self-pity and rage. Whenever you are tempted to grumble, come to Me and talk it out. As you open up to Me, I will put My thoughts in your mind and My song in your heart.

Jeremiah 31:25
English Standard Version

For I will satisfy the weary soul, and every languishing soul I will replenish.

Philippians 2:14-15
English Standard Version

14 Do all things without grumbling or disputing, 15 that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world.

Jesus Calling: October 8

I Love you with an everlasting Love. The human mind cannot comprehend My constancy. Your emotions flicker and falter in the face of varying circumstances, and you tend to project your fickle feelings onto Me. Thus, you do not benefit fully from My unfailing Love.
     You need to look beyond the flux of circumstances and discover Me gazing lovingly back at you. This awareness of My Presence strengthens you, as you receive and respond to My Love. I am the same yesterday, today, and forever! Let My Love flow into you continually. Your need for Me is as constant as the outflow of My Love to you.
Jeremiah 31:3
English Standard Version

    the Lord appeared to him from far away.
I have loved you with an everlasting love;
    therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you.

Exodus 15:13
English Standard Version

You have led in your steadfast love the people whom you have redeemed;
    you have guided them by your strength to your holy abode.

Jesus Calling: October 7

In order to hear My voice, you must release all your worries into My care. Entrust to Me everything that concerns you. This clears the way for you to seek My Face unhindered. Let Me free you from fear that is hiding deep inside you. Sit quietly in My Presence, allowing My Light to soak into you and drive out any darkness lodged within you.
      Accept each day just as it comes to you, remembering that I am sovereign over your life. Rejoice in this day that I have made, trusting that I am abundantly present in it. Instead of regretting or resenting the way things are, thank Me in all circumstances. Trust Me and don't be fearful; thank Me and rest in My sovereignty.

I Peter 5:6-7
English Standard Version

Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

This is the day that the Lord has made;
    let us rejoice and be glad in it.

Psalm 119:17-24 - A Longing for God's Word

Psalm 119:17-24
17 Deal bountifully with Your servant, that I may live and keep Your word.
18 Open my eyes, that I may behold wonderful things from Your law.
19 I am a stranger in the earth; Do not hide Your commandments from me.
20 My soul is crushed with longing after Your ordinances at all times.
21 You rebuke the arrogant, the cursed, who wander from Your commandments.
22 Take away reproach and contempt from me, for I observe Your testimonies.
23 Even though princes sit and talk against me, your servant meditates on Your statutes.
24 Your testimonies also are my delight; They are my counselors.

Message: I longing for God's Word

Time: The psalms were written by many different people across a period of a thousand years in Israel's history. They are thought to have been compiled and put together in their present form by some unknown editor shortly after the captivity ended about 537 B.C.

What the Lord is Saying:

I am gaining a new appreciate for Psalms. It is really a great set of verses, to help me offer prayers to the Lord. I really appreciate and it provides a fantastic guide.

Deal bountifully with Your servant, that I may live and keep Your word. (v.17)
This is a verse which says, "give me what I deserve." If I do good, I just receive a reward; if I do bad, then a penalty; but this doesn't mean that I have a claim on this. But, it does mean that I am calling out to God, begging for his favor, his friendship, on my behalf. "That I may live" refers to the idea that life's continuance is dependent on God. "Keep your word" recognizes that life is fulfilled by keeping God's word.

Lord, I desire your favor. I desire your friendship. Grant me your favor as I life my life in a way that seeks to honor you.

Open my eyes, that I may behold wonderful things from Your law. (v. 18)
"Open my eyes" - Lord, there are many things in life that impede my vision of truth. I get selfish and think I deserve things; I have desires that corrupt me; take away from eyes what is before them to prevent clear vision. Your Law is wonderful and results in wonderful things in my life; this is what I desire.

Generally, my prayers are not spoken in this way. My requests are not asking for my obedience.

I am a stranger in the earth; Do not hide Your commandments from me. (v. 19)
"I am a stranger in the earth." - This is not my home; my belonging is in another place. Because of this, I need God's intervention on my life. "Do not hide your commandments from me." - Make me to know your commandments and keep them continually before me. I am away from home, outside, and I need help. I need your constant presence and intervention in my life to make it here.

My soul is crushed with longing after Your ordinances at all times.(v. 20)
I think of the things in my life that I long for: success in my job; the resources to provide for my children and wife; a healthy life; favor on my friends and family; but, do I long for obedience to God's commands? This is what this verse is stating and appealing to God for. The desire to know more of the commands of God is continually on me, exhausting my strength, and overcomes me. Shift my priorities, away from things to obedience to your ordinances. I want to be fully acquainted with all that is in your law.

You rebuke the arrogant, the cursed, who wander from Your commandments. (v. 21)
Obedience to God's laws brings favor upon me. But, there is Your displeasure towards people that disobey Your commandments. Disobedience is not gratifying but instead it has dire results. It is a curse to wander away from God's commandments. I too often stare at the momentary pleasure and do not see the lasting results from wandering from God's commands. I do not want to be found among the number that despise the commandments of God.

Take away reproach and contempt from me, for I observe Your testimonies. (v. 22)
God, show me your favor. Do not let me suffer in the estimation of mankind on account of my faith. Do not let me be exposed to malicious charges; accusations of hypocrisy, insincerity, and unfaithfulness. Lord, it is my desire to be faithful and to be well pleased in your sight.

Even though princes sit and talk against me, your servant meditates on Your statutes. (v.23)
It is understood that man and his ways will not favor me, but this does not matter to me. Help me God to meditate on your statutes. Do not be surprised when people speak against me and my faith.

Your testimonies also are my delight; They are my counselors. (V.24)
My main happiness is in the word of God. As I engage in difficulties or trying times or uncertain times, I lean on my experiences before God and what He has taught me. This is why I so enjoy to listen to people's testimonies. It inspires me and lets me know that God is indeed at work in so many lives and He holds many people together.

Promise: Keep myself in the Word. It is the only way to find wisdom and guidance. God, increase and sustain in me a love for Your Word.

Jesus Calling: October 6

Be willing to follow wherever I lead. Follow Me wholeheartedly, with glad anticipation quickening your pace. Though you don't know what lies ahead, I know; and that is enough! Some of My richest blessings are just around the bend: out of sight, but nonetheless very real. To receive these gifts, you must walk by faith--not by sight. This doesn't mean closing your eyes to what is all around you. It means subordinating the visible world to the invisible Shepherd of your soul.
      Sometimes I lead you up a high mountain with only My hand to support you. The higher you climb, the more spectacular the view becomes; also, the more keenly you sense your separation from the world with all its problems. This frees you to experience exuberantly the joyous reality of My Presence. Give yourself fully to these Glory-moments, awash in dazzling Light. I will eventually lead you down the mountain, back into community with others. Let My Light continue to shine within you as you walk among people again.

2 Corinthians 5:7
English Standard Version

for we walk by faith, not by sight.

Verse Thoughts
Our walk, our life and our conduct rest on our belief in the Unseen. It is quite clear, that the difference between a Christian and a person of the world is the Christian lives for the Unseen. The Christ follower has faith and life is lived by this faith. More and more, the world is wanting to silence the Unseen.

Psalm 96:6
English Standard Version

Splendor and majesty are before him;
    strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.

John 8:12
English Standard Version

Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Psalm 36:9
English Standard Version

For with you is the fountain of life;
    in your light do we see light.
