Jesus Calling: January 18

I am leading you along the high road, but there are descents as well as ascents. In the distance you see snow-covered peaks glistening in brilliant sunlight. Your longing to reach those peaks is good, but you must not take shortcuts. Your assignment is to follow Me, allowing Me to direct your path. Let the heights beckon you onward, but stay close to Me.
Learn to trust Me when things go "wrong." Disruptions to your routine highlight your dependence on Me. Trusting acceptance of trials brings blessings that far outweigh them all. Walk hand in hand with Me through the day. I have lovingly planned every inch of the way. Trust does not falter when the path becomes rocky and steep. Breathe deep draughts of My presence, and hold tightly to My hand. Together we can make it.
John 21:19
English Standard Version
(This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said to him, “Follow me.”

2 Corinthians 4:17
English Standard Version
For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison,

Habakkuk 3:19
English Standard Version
GOD, the Lord, is my strength;
he makes my feet like the deer's;
he makes me tread on my high places.
To the choirmaster: with stringed instruments.

My Prayer
Father, thank you for your great love and care you have for me. Thank you for the peaks and the valley's. Lord, I'm amazed at how often I only want the good in every situation and I guard myself so much against the bad. I must remember that I can't compromise any of your commands for getting the good. Lord, direct me away from taking shortcuts. Lord, I want to follow You in every circumstance of my life and choose only Your way. Thank you for the promise of directing my paths.

Lord, I want to stay close to You. Lord, help me to be open to new heights. I want to serve You with all my heart and I pray that You would direct me to the best place for me to serve You. Lord, I don't know if I'm in the best place right now. It's providing for me and yet it is very empty. I do love so much ministry and serving You. Do you want me to change? Is there another path you want to direct me towards?

Things won't always go the way I want them to and when this happens keep me connected to You Lord. Don't let me venture off. Especially I pray I wouldn't venture off to sin and in a place that I regret. I feel my road is steep right now and I admit, I think the answer often is for me to run out and solve a problem in a way I only think it can be solved. In those moments, I feel like I'm not trusting You. Why would I think compromising my beliefs is the answer?

Lord, I sit here and read these verses and I wonder if I really believe them. Do I think that you really can do something beyond my understanding? Lord, i want to trust you. I want to believe You. More than I know myself. Lord, a life lived with you is continually lived with you. In all circumstances, whether they seem troublesome or not, whether they seem hard or not, is meant to be lived with You. Help me to walk in those ways. Thank you for the grace and hand of providence You have given me. I do not deserve to be your child. It makes no sense, but I am forever grateful.

  1. I appreciate your honesty. That is a heart God can lead and a prayer He will delight to answer. Like the man who said to Jesus, when asked if he believed Jesus could do a thing, "I believe. Help my unbelief."

    1. Appreciate your taking the time to come alongside. It is definitely something He continues to teach me. I am amazed of the honesty of the Psalter. I am not perfect and so my prayers to Him do not have to be perfect, but they do need to be honest. He accepts me for who I am, so I can pray as I am.

  3. I ,too ,appreciate this dialogue.
My prayer is for God to direct my path and for me to be totally surrendered to His will. I am on a path that seems very plain. I feel that I should be doing something else.... But God. Trust and Believe and Receive. Wait on the Lord. I keep reminding myself.

  4. "Learn to trust Me when things go 'wrong'... Trusting acceptance of trials brings blessings that far outweigh them all."

Today's message to specifically EMBRACE my current trials is, well, unsettling. Lord, I can endure some of the trials but to accept and trust that more of them later lead to a better me? I would prefer Father that You just skip the steep/rocky paths... and that should and can work for me...

A whisper: Jesus walked much steeper and challenging paths PERFECTLY, so that your path to heaven would be assured and easier. Lord, I am slow to learn, You should have had me at Hello! I will grip Your hand firmly today and trust Your leading. My trials are always in Your hands. Help me to believe that every day. Thank you and Amen.

    2. MadFox: I found this blog 9 months ago while looking for a daily JC Devotional I could share online with a friend in crisis. After reading comments from you and many others, I feel as though I’ beginning to know you. Hindsight is a tremendous gift from God. To know why you endured a certain situation or set of circumstances, even if it doesn’t become clear until years later, is a blessing. I count it a blessing to me to be able to read the comments & prayers from all of you. May our Lord bless and keep everyone who comes here to read this and share in it.

    4. To Anonymous 4 years now... Belief is a process. Faith is never perfect. If we had 100% faith, then Jesus' life of faith would have been unnecessary. So if you are believing more and more that's a good thing. In hindsight, you can see your faith grow. Glad you have been blessed by Jesus Calling and the blog. Godspeed. And yes, I'm doing well, and glad to be here!

I had some exposure to religion being here in the USA, but my parents had given up church by the time I was born. Seek local wise men who have no agenda to "church you" but are men of faith. Reading faith-based books and scripture, and a local mentor or 2 will absolutely help your journey. Godspeed.

It's hard to see God working in the present but in looking back at our life, it is easier to see the people who helped us and where God Himself was there. Trust that He is holding your hand right now as today's devo said. In Matthew 28 to His disciples and thus to you and me: "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me... And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

Help me to see that it is in these bumps, twists and turns that I can grow in my faith and my dependence on You. Help me to remember a life with out suffering was not promised the only promise was that you would be with me every step of the way. What I receive in the verses and the term "shortcuts" is going "Home" earlier would be easier than the difficulties of "this life". Trusting Him through these valleys is long and hard. My road has definitely been bumpy since I lost my husband suddenly 2 years ago. Lessons are learned in the the darkest of times if we trust Jesus. My heart is changing more to his glory everyday. Whenever a new "crisis" arises I have found breathing in the presence of our Lord and savior gets me to the next level of understanding. It's not about me , but how I can serve with a heart like Jesus. I pray everyday for the strength and clarity in all situations to do just that. Every trial can be looked at as a spiritual growing opportunity. And yes we have growing pains. Trust and hold His hand. Blessings and love ❤️

  12. Today begins the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, an observance that began a little over 100 years ago. The theme this year is, "Justice, Only Justice you shall Pursue..." from Deuteronomy 16:18-20. The call this year is for all Christians to be in prayer for those people in the world who are experiencing the worst of bumpy roads and inclines that are beyond steep; people who are displaced from their homes and desperately seeking refuge elsewhere, people caught in human trafficking, people who are exploited and marginalized, people who are enslaved to cruel and violent leadership, and the list goes on and on as the cases of injustice in the world is never ending. In the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity this year, all believers are called to lay aside their theological differences and pray together for God's justice to be experienced by all those suffering hardships that we cannot even imagine. In praying for God's justice, we will find our hearts increasingly yearning for that justice which will cause us to think and act accordingly on behalf of anyone who could use a helping hand from us. For further information and a daily devotional for the week, you can go to this website, geii.org, and click on Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 2019. You may look to see if there is any observance of the Week among the churches in your community. Jesus' final recorded prayer with His disciples included these words, "that they be one even as You and I are one. That they may be completely one so the world may know You have sent Me and have loved them as You have loved Me." (John 17:22-23) A united holy, catholic and apostolic Church is an open door for God to bring justice for those who are suffering rocky and steep paths in life.

The scripture states that to find peace we need to focus on Jesus; communicate with Jesus and always be thankful.
My question is how do you focus, communicate and thank Jesus? How do you pray?
    Thank you

    1. BMP: I'm no expert at prayer, and struggled mightily for decades; but do feel better about my prayer life in the past couple of years. I've read most books on prayer and consistently asked those who seem to easily pray, how they felt their prayer life was... almost all said it was a struggle! So, you are not alone in searching to focus and communicate better with God in prayer.

The Apostles felt inadequate with their praying relative to the apparent ease and comfort that Jesus demonstrated... so much so that they even asked Him to teach them how to pray. He gave them what is now known as the Lord's Prayer as an example. I still find that often when I struggle for words that I fall back to reciting it until I think of new praises or thanks.

In summary, Prayer is unique to every person in my view and there is no one way to pray. Some journal each day, some use prayer guides, some use lauds (traditional morning prayers) and some just sit in silence, and listen. I know this is an inadequate response but the fact that you are asking will help you to develop a better prayer life. I improved in my view because my life circumstances brought me to my knees and I surrendered. Perhaps that is the best advice, I can give. Godspeed. Praying for you and all the JC family to have peace about this. Amen.

    3. BMP: I'll share some thoughts that you might find useful. Madfox shared some great thoughts on prayer from his personal perspective and practice, let me do the same.

I did not truly learn how to pray in a meaningful fashion until I was in my mid-40's (and I had been a minister already for 20 years). Where I was getting stuck was from my Bachelor of Science degree in which I had learned to explain everything before accepting it. What is happening when we pray is beyond understanding and explanation. What I had to learn was to commit myself to it and let it have its effects. So I stopped wondering about the "hows" and began to believe in the effects. In so doing, I found my prayers were starting to change me. I had thought my prayers were to ask God to get involved; then I realized an ever present loving God does not need to be invited to the party, He is hosting it. What He most wants is my participation in what He is doing. My participation begins when I start praying for people and situations. As I continually prayed for people or situations, I began to "fall in love" with the people or situations for which I was praying. With a greater love toward people/situations, I found myself responding better to the people I have been praying for or the situations for which I was praying. Thus, the value of prayer for me was the molding of my heart in accordance with the heart of God. I have learned not so much how to pray but the purpose of prayer. I have discovered that when I am in prayer, I am closest to my Lord. I have learned it is the holiest spiritual discipline I can do. There are a many, many books on prayer because so many people are asking the questions you have asked. There are some very helpful books that are worth reading. But whether you read or not, my suggestion to you from my own experience, is to begin the practice of regular prayer and let it make its impact on you. I pray for you, BMP; please pray for me. God be with you.

    4. Thank you Madfox and Bob for sharing; my prayers are in silence but sometimes it doesn't feel like prayer to me. My prayers will never be such as yours and many others. Thank you all for your beautiful prayers..they become my prayers. Thank you Jesus for listening.

I am greatful for all he supplies and I suppose I must include the rocks as well as the rainbows...or how else would I know the difference? But still I inwardly cringe when this message comes reminding me that hard difficult times will continue, despite the fact that the sun is shing down on me right at this moment. But the sun never disappears for Good it is always there even when we cannot see it. Gods love and constant care in my life leads me thru all adversity and the Rocks I walk on do indeed strengthen the souls of my feet to enable me to go the distance!
Never let go of my hand my Savior says...hold tighter and you will get stronger thru your weakness and the sun will shine again and again. Thank you Jesus calling family for your honest insights and hearts that you share. God bless you thru your trial and thru your rainbows. They both are just as important in how you respond. 20. Dear JC Family, we come again to the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. (in my post from last year, I gave explanation and thus will not repeat my self). I take this week as seriously as I do Lent and Advent. In a time of such great division in our land and the world, I feel it is imperative that there is a living example of what unity looks like. Jesus prayed in John 17 that would come from the unity of all believers. My posts from today until the 25th will come from reflection on the theme for this year.

Theme: They Showed Us Unusual Kindness (Acts 28:2)
    Scriptural basis: Acts 27:18-Acts 28:10

Day One (Acts 27:18,19,21): When the boat in which Paul and other prisoners were being transported to Rome came upon life threatening storms, all on board began to throw the cargo over board. I am not a boatman but apparently when one hits very treacherous conditions, the first response is to lighten the load. Our JC reading above spoke of difficult passages along the path of life. The principle of this passage holds true no matter what the difficulty might be, when in difficult circumstances, lighten the load. Too often people have opened the door to stress because they are carrying too much cargo. It is easier to climb steep terrain (as suggested in the JC reading) with less in our lives.

Taking this passage to the topic of Christian unity, too often the unity among believers breaks down because of theological baggage that has been acquired over time fosters distance from others, much like the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector (Luke 18:9-14). If we seriously want to be united as Jesus prayed we should, we may need to throw some theology baggage overboard or at least set it aside. If all are willing to do this, there is unity being practiced that the world can take notice of and hopefully, desire the same.

Parting thought: One of the beauties of this blog is that we have not let any theological baggage interfere with our relating to one another. I am sure we come from many different religious backgrounds but that has never come into play in our posts thus making this blog a beautiful place to visit. Thank you. God be with you.

    1. Thanks for sharing Prayer of Christian Unity Week.
We truly can use more unity.
Day 1, Called by God: “You did not choose me but I chose you” (John 15:16a)
      Scripture
Genesis 12:1-4, The call of Abraham
John 1:35-51, The call of the first disciples
      Meditation
The start of the journey is an encounter between a human being and God, between the created and the Creator, between time and eternity.
Abraham heard the call: “Go to the land I will show you.” Like Abraham we are called to leave that which is familiar and go to the place that God has prepared in the depths of our hearts. Along the way, we become more and more ourselves, the people God has wanted us to be from the beginning. And by following the call that is addressed to us, we become a blessing for our loved ones, our neighbors, and the world.
The love of God seeks us. God became human in Jesus, in whom we encounter the gaze of God. In our lives, as in the Gospel of John, God’s call is heard in different ways. Touched by his love, we set out. In this encounter, we walk a path of transformation – the bright beginning of a relationship of love that is always started anew.

      Prayer
Jesus Christ, you seek us, you wish to offer us your friendship and lead us to a life that is ever more complete. Grant us the confidence to answer your call so that we may be transformed and become witnesses of your tenderness for the world. Amen.

  24. Brie, I just "happened" to see your question about hope from the 8th. I have been on a path of discovering His hope (resetting mine), and today's devotional, I think, is a good example of His hope.

That is a profound question you asked. We are on a journey of discovery of His hope.

  26. Forgot my own prayer request: dear warriors, son #2 is asking for prayers that he & his family will find a place to land soon. He has taken on the addition of his wife's parents to live with them. So this makes looking for a suitable house more of a challenge. He is also waiting on the Lord to make known what ministry He wants he and his family to have. He knows that all this has to align. Please pray that the stress will not weigh him down. 27. The LORD is my Shepherd [to feed, to guide and to shield me], I shall not want.
    He lets me lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside the still and quiet waters.
He refreshes and restores my soul (life); He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. Even though I walk through the [sunless] valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod [to protect] and Your staff [to guide], they comfort and console me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You have anointed and refreshed my head with  oil.
    My cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy and unfailing love shall follow me all the days of my life, And I shall dwell forever [throughout all my days] in the house and in the presence of the LORD (Psalm 23).

Loving Father, Thank You for delivering me from the valley of deep darkness. Thank You for being the Lord who blesses and anoints Your believers with the Holy Spirit, whom oil symbolizes, to prepare them for Your service. No matter what I encounter, You are in control of my destiny. No man is, so I stay on the course You have prepared for me, trusting in Your Sovereignty.
Thank You for the hedge of Protection around the new leaders of this nation. Thank You for preserving America and and keeping democracy alive! Thank You for destroying ALL the plans of the enemies and restoring this great nation. May Healing and Peace begin, becasue NO darkness can distinguish Your Light! In Jesus' name I pray.

I was so busy cooking today and fixing a broken drawer in the kitchen. Had my Bible group tonight but one of my members couldn’t make it. She has some relatives who have COVID. Praying they will get better soon. Thanks for your prayers for Scott. So far he is doing well, thank God. I did something spontaneous today! While I was in the middle of making meatballs and my meat sauce, or as we Italians call it, gravy, my husband announced he was taking a walk by the Dam along the parkway. I wasn’t dressed and hadn’t even washed my face. I said “That sounds like fun. Can I come?” He said: Yes, if you’re ready in 5 minutes.
So I threw on some clothes and a mask, hat and gloves. And off we went. I got to enjoy the beauty of God’s creation, pray, and talk with my good husband. Even got to run a mile! It was just what I needed and I am sure GOD guided it. Thank You Father for always knowing exactly what I need. You are so faithful!

  45. Thank you Father for safety and protection over this past weekend of travel with my"family" of moms and daughters as we gathered in anticipation of my daughter's wedding in July. The weekend was full of catching up, as we have not been ALL together in the recent covid divided years. We laughed and cried and mostly remembered so many good times. We learned of heavy burdens that some are carrying. In my observation, I am perhaps the only "believer" in Jesus as my savior. Like discussions around covid, any inferences or questions about my belief were avoided. I don't push, I just want to be as loving as possible and let the holy spirit answer my prayers and guide my conversations. This can be harder in a party atmosphere, forgive me for the times and conversations I also avoided. Please join me in prayer today for this group of strong women and daughters who don't yet see that it is God working in their lives, not their own power that drives their success and is their help in times of stress. Please add their partners and spouses, and extended families and friends to this prayer. Come Holy Spirit! Infiltrate our lives with a genuine and true faith in Him, who from all things are made good. In Jesus's name I pray. Thank you!

  48. Trusting in His mercy as I stand upon our Cornerstone.

Psalm 118:4-6. Let them now that fear the Lord say, that his mercy endureth for ever.
I called upon the Lord in distress: the Lord answered me, and set me in a large place.
The Lord is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me?

Psalm 118:21-24 I will praise thee: for thou hast heard me, and art become my salvation.
The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner.
This is the Lord's doing; it is marvellous in our eyes.
This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.

  49. My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. (James 1:2-3). The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble, and He knows those that take refuge in Him. (Nahum 1:7). Consider the work of God; for who can make straight what He has made crooked? In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity consider: surely God has appointed the one as well as the other, so that man can find out nothing that will come after him. (Ecclesiastes 7:13-14).

    2. Good morning Jan. This is a definite valley for your DIL's family. I know and you know God is right there with them wrapping His comforting arms around each of them...even and especially the son that was estranged from Dick and his mom. While there is tremendous loss right now along with the unforgiveness from the son, may there be Sonshine in the days ahead with forgiveness and healing of the relationship with his mom. May happy memories with Dick comfort them all. In Jesus' name, amen.

    5. When I saw your sad news, dear Jan, I knew why Dick had been in my prayers over and over. I prayed yesterday that if it was God’s will, May He take him home out of his suffering. Praying that God will change your son’s heart towards the family and lead through a reconciliation. May God rest Dick’s soul and comfort and guide his family especially your dear DIL and lead them to Him for salvation, strength, and peace. Thank You Jesus

  60. Joining in your perfect prayer and believing we will hear good news to celebrate because we serve a faithful God. Trusting in His Word and promises. I have seen His faithfulness because my Oncologist said there is no sign of cancer and my bloodwork was perfect. My next appointment is a whole year from now! 1/27:25. Thanks for your prayers! May we soon receive a blessing report from our dear Norah that her Best Man is doing well.
Thank You Father for this in Jesus’ Name. Amen

  61. Dear JC Family, we are home; I am showered, fed my Best Man. He is 'all fixed!' Carotid Surgery went exceptionally well. Can't believe it's only been 24 hours. It feels like a WEEK! We are both so thankful that the Dr. was able to correct (or clean or, heck, I don't even know other than 'cleaning out that artery.'). My sweet man is home and healthy and living another day, month, year. In 3 months, he'll get the other carotid cleaned out. He asked the Head Nurse if he could 'Make a reservation for 3 months from now?' She laughed! I can't say enough about his surgeon, the staff, the food, the room, the view - it was ALL so good.
Thank you for your many prayers. Please know that all of you and all of yours are in my continued prayers as well. AND, JEANNE!!! WOO HOOO!!!! Such FUN results!!

    3. Waiting to hear Good News from you gave me the opportunity to actualize today's devotion, steadfast Trust when the path became rocky and steep, breathing in deep draughts of God's Presence, surrounding you and hubby and holding tightly to God's Hand, and to yours in Spirit. Walking Hand in hand. we jumped the waves and made it through.
      In Jesus ' Name. AMEN!
