Proverbs 1:1-7 - Purpose of Wisdom Literature

Proverbs 1:1-7 -
1 The proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel:
To know wisdom and instruction,
    to understand words of insight,
to receive instruction in wise dealing,
    in righteousness, justice, and equity;
to give prudence to the simple,
    knowledge and discretion to the youth—
Let the wise hear and increase in learning,
    and the one who understands obtain guidance,
to understand a proverb and a saying,
    the words of the wise and their riddles.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge;
    fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Message: The purpose of wisdom literature

Time: It seems that Proverbs was written and then compiled sometime between the tenth and sixth centuries B.C. Proverbs was probably written during the reign of Solomon, 971-931 B.C.

What the Lord is Saying:

In the study I am doing, it notes that the beginning of this book, the first 7 books states the purpose of wisdom literature. It is interesting that in the last verse of Romans, it remarked that God is the only wise God.

The dictionary defines wisdom as, "the ability to think and act using knowledge, experience, understanding, common sense, and insight." James 3:17 states, "But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere."

Solomon hear defines the purpose of these Proverbs:
  • To know wisdom and instruction,
  • To understand words of insight,
  • To receive instruction
    • in wise dealing,
    • in righteousness,
    • justice,
    • and equity;
  • To give prudence to the simple
  • To give knowledge to the youth
  • To give discretion to the youth
  • Hear and increase in learning
  • Obtain guidance
  • To understand a proverb and a saying, the words of the wise and their riddle
So, just looking at these verses, it is clear that Proverbs give us a lot in regards to life and living. They need to be read and talked about. I need to read them to my children. I need to pass them along. Even if they are gone from home, maybe I need to make a point to send them a Proverb a day and talk about it a little. That is a nice idea. But, can I make that happen? Or maybe just try to do it 5 days a week or 3, but not zero.

Promise: The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.
