Jesus Calling: December 23

I am King of Kings and Lord of lords, dwelling in dazzlingly bright Light! I am also your Shepherd, Companion, and Friend--the One who never lets go of your hand. Worship Me in My Holy Majesty; come close to Me and rest in My Presence. You need Me both as God and as Man. Only My Incarnation on that first, long-ago Christmas could fulfill your neediness. Since I went to such extreme measures to save you from your sins, you can be assured that I will graciously give you all you need.
     Nurture well your trust in Me as Savior, Lord, and Friend. I have held back nothing in My provision for you. I have even deigned to live within you! Rejoice in all that I have done for you, and My Light will shine through you into the world.
I Timothy 6:15-16
English Standard Version
15 which he will display at the proper time—he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.

Psalm 95:6-7
English Standard Version
Oh come, let us worship and bow down;
    let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!
For he is our God,
    and we are the people of his pasture,
    and the sheep of his hand.
Today, if you hear his voice,

Romans 8:32
English Standard Version
He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?

2 Peter 1:19
English Standard Version
And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts,

  2. Our reading for today and MadFox’s comments point us to the Hallelujah Chorus. It is said of Handel that he had reached a low point in his life when he was inspired to compose the Messiah. And it is said that upon the completion of writing the Hallelujah Chorus, he sat at his desk with tears streaming down his face. A visitor came into the room and seeing Handel as he was asked, “What’s wrong?” To which Handel responded, “I have just had a glimpse of heaven.” As you and I approach the manger again, may we see heaven and be free to let our emotions out.

    5. AWEsome. God's gifts are amazing. I find it humbling and inspiring to have "sky events" that turn the attention of so many to the heavens as with the conjunction this week. Maybe a best place to listen to Handel's Messiah would be while looking to the night sky πŸͺπŸŽΆ♥️✝️ May there be no doubt among man, Jesus the Saviour is born and He shall reign forever and ever!

  8. The traditional reading in the universal Church this day is the birth of John the Baptist (Luke 1:57-66). John was sent according to prophecy to be the herald of the coming of the Messiah. And he was and he did. That was then and was fulfilled. This is today when we remember with great adoration the birth of our Lord and we look forward with great expectation when He shall come again. And the present heralds for this Second Coming are you and I, we point to what was and what will be. For each of us it takes on different forms, for all of us it is the same message. As we ready ourselves to worship our Lord who came to us, let us reflect His love so clouded minds can be cleared from their confusion, so self-seeking hearts can be lifted out of their darkness, so dimmed spirits can be purged from deadly habits. Let us proclaim the good news filled with the love we were shown and the love we now possess. God be with you!

    2. Thank you, Colleen, for your very kind response. I have written Advent and Lenten devotionals for the churches I have served but I have never published anything. I write as a conclusion to my time of meditation/contemplation, it is my form of journaling. I write best when I know someone else may get something out of my reflections. When people respond as you have, it encourages me all the more to write. My joy is having someone inspired through what was written. It is good and necessary for me spiritually to be back in this blog. God be with you.

      Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
      Shall come to thee, O Israel.

      O come, O come, thou Lord of might,
      Who to thy tribes, on Sinai's height,
      In ancient times didst give the law
      In cloud and majesty and awe.

      O come, thou Rod of Jesse, free
      Thine own from Satan's tyranny;
      From depths of hell thy people save,
      And give them victory o'er the grave.

      O come, thou Dayspring from on high
      And cheer us by thy drawing nigh;
      Disperse the gloomy clouds of night,
      And death's dark shadows put to flight.

      O come, thou Key of David, come
      And open wide our heav'nly home;
      Make safe the way that leads on high,
      And close the path to misery.

  18. Dear Jesus Calling Family, I woke up rested, and witnessed a beautiful sunrise - pink clouds floating peacefully by and Words of Praise being shared with my family - spiritual and earthly. It will be a sunny, warm (for the Midwest) day and I plan to enjoy each task and victory, that He so graciously provides.
    As I said to them, "Unprecedented times? Yes! Counting my blessings is far better and far outweighs any of the 'pity party favors,' my mind can conjure up or the world tries to offer. We have the freedom to worship 'the only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords,' that I Timothy 6:15 speaks of.
    I will do the 'final wrap' on gifts, blessings He's provided and also the final wrap on my work for this year. I am blessed and thankful for all of your prayers. I had blood work done on Monday and yesterday had my 'TeleMed' call with my NP. All is well, all is well...thank you, Father. And, in 'Brie-Style-Prayer,' I ask, seek, knock, and thank you that You not let me take any of your blessings for granted.
    Holding each and everyone of you in my prayers and heart. Picturing you blessed and blessing, MadFox, as you get treatments and celebrate with your dear family. And, Bob, picturing you reading and thoughtful and always there with a good Word as He always supplies and you so graciously provide.
    Picturing you dear ladies doing your Happy Dances and Sassy Mom, praying and caring for all of her kids - the ones who are hers and her adopted ones. LCA, picturing you with your grandbabies and adult kids or talking on the phone if you are still unable to see them, but always, ALWAYS, giving Him the Glory.
    My Dear Hub and I don't know how it will all play out with our fam, but I do know we are loved and honored and for that I am eternally thankful.

  21. Maplewood you always lift me up and give me fresh insight. Brie I'm so very thankful for your encouragement. I stand on God's promises if I didn't believe them I couldn't continue on. I trust God with all I am. I depend on him for every breath . I don't have it in me to raise these children with out him. I beg him through out my day to give me his strength and insight on what to say and do. Right now I'm so physically exhausted that I just cry. It's very upsetting to the children and my husband gets frustrated because he feels so helpless, because of his strokes. If I'm having a hard time it just pushes him deeper into despair. So, I try to keep it to myself, I don't share with friends or family anymore because everyone has opinions about what the other ones need to do. I honestly need help, physical help. My respite worker for the two youngest kids quit. That was giving me a little bit of a break. I trust God more than I can explain. He has brought me through so much. I know he gives me all I need. Lord you know my needs, but I will ask again Lord please send me physical help and strengthen me physically and in my spirit so I can be refreshed and feel your spirit working in me and through me.

    This is the third post I've typed today praying if it's God's will it will not get deleted before I hit publish.

    1. You are always in my prayers dear Terri. God knows how weak you feel but He also knows you trust in Him with every fiber of your being. He knows you must care for those children and you need the strength to do so. I’m praying He will send you physical help either in a person or He will increase your own strength. Thank you Father for this in the Name of Your Son Jesus Christ.

  23. Thank you, Sassy Mom I know that God knows what's best for me and being so wore out isn't his perfect plan for me or my family. I'm sorry for my tired Mom rant. The truth be told I get up in the morning already overwhelmed. I sleep on the trundle bed in the boys room half the night trying to get our youngest back to sleep. I feel so selfish when I'm feeling this way. My responsibility is to be the best example I can be at all time and when I'm looking at myself I can't do that. How are we suppose to balance taking care of ourselves and taking care of our family? I end up giving until I'm physically sick, then I still get up to take care of stuff, weather it's the kids fighting or I can hear in ny husband that he needs a break.

  25. Fourth Thursday in Advent
    *An Event for Everyone

    There were shepherds camping in the neighborhood. They had set night watches over their sheep. Suddenly, God’s angel stood among them and God’s glory blazed around them. They were terrified. The angel said, “Don’t be afraid. I’m here to announce a great and joyful event that is meant for everybody, worldwide: A Savior has just been born in David’s town, a Savior who is Messiah and Master. This is what you’re to look for: a baby wrapped in a blanket and lying in a manger.”

    At once the angel was joined by a huge angelic choir singing God’s praises: Glory to God in the heavenly heights, Peace to all men and women on earth who please him.

    As the angel choir withdrew into heaven, the shepherds talked it over. “Let’s get over to Bethlehem as fast as we can and see for ourselves what God has revealed to us.” They left, running, and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger. Seeing was believing. They told everyone they met what the angels had said about this child. All who heard the shepherds were impressed. (Luke 2:8-18 (Message))

    [This is a meditation I was asked to write for an Advent devotional published by First Presbyterian Church in Lebanon, TN]

    The night began like any other night.  With the sun setting and darkness creeping in over the countryside, the other shepherds and I spread ourselves around the perimeter where the sheep were lying in order for us to keep watch over the flock by night.  It isn’t easy being a shepherd these days.  Oh, the work is not hard; it is the stereotype people have of shepherds that makes life painful.  It is the practice of a few dishonest shepherds when far away from the sheep’s owners to sell off one or two of the sheep and then tell the owner a predator got them. As a result, we all have been categorized as thieves and liars, making us outcasts in society.  We are even banned from being a witness in a court of law because we cannot be trusted to make a valid witness.  Our only friends are other shepherds.

    But enough whining, my fellow shepherds and I take our work seriously and intend on giving proper care to these helpless creatures for which we have taken responsibility.  So, as we were being due diligent in our task at hand, suddenly, the darkness was shattered by an unexplainable glow. It continued to get brighter until the glorious light completely enveloped us.  Within that brilliance, a figure appeared.  At the moment, none of us knew what it was because we had never seen a figure such as this but with hindsight, I now can tell you it was an angel of the Lord with a message for us.  Initially, our response was no different than any typical human being when confronted with an apparition, we were terrified (or as an older version of your bible describes, ‘we were sore afraid’).  The angel of the LORD put us at ease by saying, “Be not afraid,” and then continued with the message it was sent to deliver, the long-awaited Messiah was born this very evening. Contrary to popular opinion, we are devout in our faith which is steeped in the hope that one day the LORD would send a Messiah to save us and now we were being told tonight it has happened.  What was perplexing is that this message is being given to us lowly shepherds.  Shouldn’t the angel be going to the religious authorities with this message for they are the ones responsible for telling the people what the LORD is up to?  But no, the message has come to us rejects of society.  How are we going to tell anyone about this since we are viewed as unreliable witnesses?  If the LORD intended that the birth of the Messiah be kept secret for the next 30 years, I guess the LORD knew the secret would be safe with us.

    1. As these thoughts filled our minds, suddenly the host of heaven spilled over eternity’s edge and filled the sky, singing God’s praises. There are no finite words or images I can use to capture the magnitude of the whole experience.  Tears were streaming down my face, and I could see the others dabbing their eyes as well.  We, of all people, have been given the privilege of being told the LORD is fulfilling His promise.  In a world where we count for nothing, the LORD has chosen us above all people to receive the good news that the way of salvation has come to pass.  Without further ado, we all agreed to hurry back to Bethlehem and see for ourselves this thing that has taken place, which the LORD has made known to us on our watch. Oh, what a night!
