Jesus Calling: November 24

Thankfulness takes the sting out of adversity. That is why I have instructed you to give thanks for everything. There is an element of mystery in this transaction: You give Me thanks (regardless of your feelings), and I give you joy (regardless of your circumstances). This is a spiritual act of obedience--at times, blind obedience. To people who don't know Me intimately, it can seem irrational and even impossible to thank Me for heartrending hardships. Nonetheless, those who obey Me in this way are invariably blessed, even though difficulties may remain.
Thankfulness opens your heart to My Presence and your mind to My thoughts. You may still be in the same place, with the same set of circumstances, but it is as if a light has been switched on, enabling you to see from My perspective. It is this Light of My Presence that removes the sting from adversity.

Ephesians 5:20
English Standard Version
giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ

Psalm 118:1
English Standard Version
Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
for his steadfast love endures forever!

Psalm 89:15
English Standard Version
Blessed are the people who know the festal shout,
who walk, O Lord, in the light of your face,

  4. With Thanksgiving now behind us, it is true that when one is an American, it is hard to imagine not being thankful. God is pointing the world to His grace and I pray that we receive it with grateful hearts.

  5. The element of mystery in this eternal truth is no small thing. It is only mystery because we cannot resolve it in our mind. Before we proceed in a direction, we feel more secure if it fits our thinking. Immediately, we are going in the wrong direction for we are not the source of our security. The difficulty we encounter is that we are using the finite tools of thinking we have been taught and they are inadequate for tha job. I don’t understand electricity but I am not hesitant to use a light switch to illuminate a room I enter. This great mystery of finding joy through thanksgiving especially in undesirable circumstances will only come to pass when we flick the switch of trust on in our heart. “I believe, Lord; help my unbelief.”

    1. It truly is the reality of the human condition that we have finite minds trying to understand the infinite world of our Father. The question a few days ago about the Trinity in the commentary section is a perfect example of what Bob is pointing out here. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is inconceivable to me on how 3 can be 1. So it is another area of just using the light switch. I believe that it will be a "ah ha" moment when we are with Father/Son/Holy Spirit in heaven. I pray that we all just flick the switch until then!

    10. I flicked the switch and here is what came on:
      In addition to
WATER (Liquid water Form/Gaseous Steam Form/and Solid Ice Form)
      SPATIAL MEASUREMENTS (Length/Width/Height)
      ANCHORS (Shank, Crown, Stock)
      SHAMROCKS (3 Leaflets)
      TRIANGLES (Sides, Base, and Vertex)
A priest recently helped me understand more about The Trinity. He said it's like a COMBO MEAL, or BUNDLING!
Being the Visual Person that I am, I can see and understand only a little more about God. Now, all that I know is hazy and blurred, as if peering at His Reflection in a poor mirror; but someday I am going to see Him in His Completeness, Face-to-face. Then I will see everything clearly, (including The Holy Trinity), just as clearly as God sees into my heart right now. Until then, I'm going to keep flicking the switch!
      In Jesus' Name. AMEN!

  6. I know that I have read this before. I have been reading Jesus Calling for years. However, today I saw it with new eyes. Maybe it's a sign of growth? :) Once again, I am humbled by the simplicity of God's Word. And I am so thankful for the faithfulness of the Peyton Family to keep this blog up. AND, I am thankful for the people who share their hearts and prayers on this blog. Your insight, Bob Malsack, made the devotion gel in my heart. I can behave like a spoiled child (not attractive or acceptable for a woman my age!). Always wanting something I don't have, always striving for something different. 'Lord, help my unbelief, too. Remind me of all the many blessings in my life. And, please help me discipline myself more to do the things Your Word teaches so I can rid my mind of regret and condemnation.' God Bless all of you! I always told my children that Thanksgiving Day is EVERYDAY. Time for Mama to heed her own words!

  9. My heavenly father you bring me your food the bread of life when it is needed the most. I see no Lord I have been going through great physical difficulties lately and I am embarrassed to admit but I have been focused so much on my pain that I believe I have forgotten the many blessings you have given me. I may have been speaking your name I may have been praying to you and reading your word but I believe I have allowed my pain to place a veil between us. You kept showing me your word yet I did not understand. I kept telling my friends what is the Lord trying to show me what is the Lord trying to show me. But it was it you who is trying to get through and couldn't it was me who it's not listening because I was distracted in my own pain and suffering. I should be rejoicing and what you have given me. I should be rejoicing and how you have changed circumstances to allow me to get help. I should be rejoicing and how you have given me relief and Nuggets of hope when I needed it the most. I should be rejoicing and the fact that you have never left my side and you understand my pain more than anyone. You're here I was crying and crying and focusing on the pain and a way to take it away. My prayers are not filled with sincerity but now I see Lord c Lord where I have failed. Praise the Lord for this devotion and the other one he gave me today too showing me that there should always be thankful this in every circumstance. That when we are to love you we love you and every circumstance. When we calling you and pray to you we call and pray to you in every circumstance. We forget the obedient part. You must learn that even in our sufferings there is joy. I can see it now I was seeing it up until a couple days ago and then I got so bad. And then my thankings became less. But Lord you are so good. This morning you draw me back to yourself can you remind me that you are still here and you were still sovereign. And no matter what happens no matter how my situation turns out the greatest gift that I have is you. In any circumstances in any condition. My father please forgive me of my failures as I come to the foot of the cross and thank you for your Grace & Mercy

  10. Amen! And thank you for this post. The”light switch” opened my mind to a better understanding of element of mystery of this transaction. Sometimes it’s hard to understand being thankful during adversity and even so we just have to faith in our Father and believe that He has all control of us. I am just thankful the is a LOVING FATHER. And in the end He is always working things out in our best interest. Thank You Father!!!

  12. Psalm 92:1-2 says,
"It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord, and to sing praises unto thy name, O Most High: 2 To shew forth thy lovingkindness in the morning, and thy faithfulness every night".
This morning, I say THANK YOU Father for another day to give You THANKS!

I share below, 4 of many Purposes of Thanksgiving from In Touch Ministry (Dr. Charles Stanley):

1.Thanksgiving magnifies the Lord because we are acknowledging Him as the source of all our blessings. It can also have an effect on those who hear us praising and thanking God, as they may be prompted to do likewise. But there are benefits for those expressing gratitude, as well.

    2. Thankfulness readjusts our focus. When we begin to praise and thank the Lord, the pressures and demands of daily life feel lighter. Instead of having our minds distracted by the cares of this world, God and His goodness become the center of our focus. What’s more, we gain awareness of our dependence upon Him and become more appreciative of His care and provision.

    3. Gratitude releases our anxiety. We rarely feel grateful when we’re burdened with troubles and worries, but that’s when we most need to offer God our gratitude. There’s an amazing physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual change that occurs when we begin voicing praise. Burdens are lifted, the internal churning stops, and we come away rejoicing in the Lord.

    4. Thanksgiving reinforces our faith. Recalling our blessings and the many ways God has expressed His goodness toward us reminds us of His faithfulness. Knowing how He has worked in the past, strengthens us to trust Him for the future.

JC family, The next time you’re feeling down or burdened, remember all the good that comes from thanking the Lord, and lift your voice in gratefulness to Him. God is right, it is indeed good to give Thanks!

  15. Just this very morning, I was reading about "thankfulness in all things and circumstances". It lead me to stories of the concentration camps and hardships (i.e. fleas and lice) that were more than a hardship, but later seen as a "blessing" as it kept the German soldiers away from them. Something clearly that cold not be understood at the time, but then later the "blessing" was revealed to the prisoners. I understand it does not make the trial less painful, but this later understanding is comforting of Gods presence even in struggles. Sometimes a situation will not be revealed in this life but possibly upon meeting face to face with Jesus in heaven. Dear Lord help me to see your presence in ALL circumstances and be grateful for it. Amen.

I am truly feeling grateful today after reading the devotion and the comments from each of you! God is good to me and my family but sometimes I don't focus on his goodness as much as should because I am too busy focusing on the distractions the enemy is throwing at me designed to take my focus from the Lord. I am praying that GOD will renew my perspective and forgive my many errors as well Sassy Mom! God deserves my praise!! My husband and I are praying about purchasing a vehicle for him because it is a NEED, the one he has is on it's last leg, but there are some hurdles in the process. He went through a tough battle with cancer last year, chemo, radiation, and two surgeries, but GOD showed up and he won the battle, but it left the finances in an awkward place. Agree with me that GOD will meet us at the dealership and provide HIS best deal on Monday! We will be thanking him in advance! I'll keep praying and thanking God for each of YOU as you continue to do the same for us!

  19. PREPARING FOR ADVENT

Revelation, the story of the final judgment to bring full restoration to everything that is God’s which is everything. The LORD begins the Divine Correction by walking among His chosen ones, in this case, the churches of Asia Minor. Sixth stop: Philadelphia (not PA) (Revelation 3:7-13)

The LORD Almighty who is sovereign over all, in His omnipotence has opened the door to salvation and the faithful souls in the small church residing in Philadelphia have gone through it. The city was situated on the Imperial Post Road, an important trade route thus was a hustling, bustling city where money talked and those without means were afforded little voice. But the faithful were not quieted by the efforts of the elite to squelch their faith. They stayed true to His word and affirmed His name even when they were maligned for doing so. Jesus has nothing but good things to say about His faithful ones in Philadelphia and their faithfulness will not go unrewarded. Jesus encourages them by letting them know, ‘I am coming soon; hold fast to what you have, so that no one may seize your crown.’ Jesus piles on blessing after blessing that they will receive by remaining constant in their faith. Indeed, the church in Philadelphia has ‘Blessed the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy Name.’

This letter affirms the second primary purpose of Advent, to renew hope. The first, the need for repentance, has been seen in the previous letters but in this letter there is nothing but hope. A true Advent experience mingles repentance and hope in equal proportion. It goes without saying that the two are complimentary. In repenting there comes hope; there is no hope if there is no repentance. These times are difficult and we may seem powerless in the face of them but He is coming, He is right around the corner, and we WILL see His victory over all the demonic forces confronting us. Do not allow fatigue to set in for ‘fatigue makes cowards of us all’ (it will cause us to compromise our faith). Advent is a time to strengthen our Hope, for as He came once humbly to a manger in Bethlehem, he will come again and this time, not as a tiny baby but as the supreme LORD of all. In that moment, ‘Every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord to the glory of God the Father!’ ‘Wake up’ and secure your grip on Him for He is almost here!

Our JC reading for today, shows us the way to the spirit of faith exemplified by our brothers & sisters in the church at Philadelphia. We are here to encourage each other to do the same. God be with you. With love, Bob

    PRAYING, SAYING, AND DOING
As God's Messenger I give each of you God's Warning: Be honest in your estimate of yourselves, measuring your value by how much faith God has given you. Just as there are many parts to our bodies, so it is with Christ's body. We are all parts of It. It takes everyone of us to make it complete. We have different work to do. We belong to each other, and each needs all the others.

    πŸ™ THANKSGIVING PRAYER FOR US:
Dear Heavenly Father God, Thank You for a small child who registered for a summer camp because she was a very good swimmer and liked the size of the camp's pool. When she received her schedule on the Friday before the camp's opening on Monday, swimming was not on it. Mom, she cried "What can I do?" Just as my Mom taught me when I was a perplexed little, I said we have all weekend to pray about it until we can leave it in God's Hands. Monday Morning, she was up early.  When she came out of her room dressed in her swimsuit, with her towel around her neck, her flip flops on, and her beach bag packed, I admit I was amused yet worried about disappointment  We stood in a long schedule change line. The little girl in line behind us asked my daughter what time was her swim class. My daughter told of her situation. The little girl's eyes brightened and said, I have swimming on my schedule and I'm in the change line because I don't want it. When it's our turn, we'll go to the change desk together.
As people would come out of the schedule change office, they would announce what was full, so those who wanted something in a full session could get out of line. Yes, swimming was announced as full. Both girls had high hopes so we stayed in line anyway.
The end? They allowed my daughter and the  little girl behind her to swap sessions, saying how could we say no to someone who came all dressed and ready for us to say yes!  In unison, both girls let out a big, gleeful Thank You! My daughter and I made the Sign of His Cross!
Would you help us unleash our faith by: ♡Praying and inviting You to get involved in our situations?
♡Saying and talking like we truly believe You are working all things together for good? and,
♡Doing whatever You ask of us, whatever it takes to keep us ready to receive, and accepting Your decision once we put it all in Your Hands?
Would You stand us up and bind us together in Faith everytime, including when circumstances appear to be against us? Would You accept our gratitude that we can trust You completely to be here all of the time?  In Jesus' Name I ask. I seek. I knock. I praise. I thank. Amen

  23. Most Gracious Loving Father, The dawn of a new day is upon me and I am grateful that You've made it possible and added me into it. Thank You Father. I know that as I give You my thanks, You in turn give me Your peace that will invade my soul and my circumstances. It is my continual praise and thanksgiving to You that keeps me in peace while the answers to my prayers are on the way, and that this peace comes after I’ve thank You for the answers, not before. May I remain consistent in my praise and thanksgiving to You because it helps keep me in faith and in the position to see my prayers answered. THANK YOU LORD FOR JESUS!

Thank You Lord for delighting in me because I fear You.
Thank You Lord for the plans You have for me; plans to prosper and not to harm me, plans to give me a hope and a future.
Thank You Lord For instructing and teaching me in the way which I should go and for guiding me with Your eyes.
Thank You Lord for knowing my body and uprooting every malfunctioning organ.
Thank You Lord for building a hedge of divine protection around me, my family and friends.
Thank You Lord for turning my captivity around and causing me to be like them that dream.
Thank You Lord for keeping me from presumptuous sins and not letting them have dominion over me.
Thank You Lord for giving me the grace to wait on You and not on man.
Thank You Lord for the many blessings that cannot be counted.
Thank You Lord You for the unspeakable joy in knowing that my Redeemer Lives!

    Blessings and Peace.

Its because that the human way to deal with difficulties and hardships , but belong to God now ....we need to be like Him.Imagine if you had a child who was always grumbling "the dinner is taking too long, its too hot to go out to play !" As a parent you want your child to be grateful in all circumstance and yet we have these expectations from our kids. Lord please teach us to be thankful for always and in everything . So today am thankful for the loss of my dad and my sister, it hurt like crazy but they are in no more pain and are in the Lord's presence .....I have a long list of things I need to be thankful today ...so am off to be thankful today and I look treasures along the way.....

  33. give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. (1 Thessalonians 5:18). Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. (Colossians 3:15,17). Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. (Philippians 4:6).

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of You. There is no better gift than the gift of Your Presence and salvation. You are our most loving Father Whose face shines upon us at all times; during all circumstances. You are with us. You walk with us and hold our hand, through it all. Thank You for Your heavenly Presence which is with us and goes before us. I praise You Lord always. Thank You Jesus. Thank You for all You are and all You do. In Jesus name, I pray, Amen.

    1. "God gave us peace when we were in pieces." I saw this posted on a church that I passed yesterday during a most enlightening cab ride. The Lord took me to an area a couple of hours away from where I live to drop off this wonderful lady to visit her brother and his family for the holidays. He is a pastor and the area is so beautiful. It was like being in a whole different world. She made the comment that it was like something from Norman Rockwell. It was the most adorable, quaint town and beautiful countryside. Thank You Jesus for seeing Your beauty and making my heart smile with the joy that only You can provide. Praise God!

  34. The city does not need the sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it. (Revelations 21:23-24). The sun will no more be your light by day, nor will the brightness of the moon shine on you, for the Lord will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory. Your sun will never set again, and your moon will wane no more; the Lord will be your everlasting light, and your days of sorrow will end. (Isaiah 60:19-20). The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. (John 1:5).

  57. Another example of Divine Exchange, "You give Me thanks (regardless of your feelings), and I give you joy (regardless of your circumstances)".
    Others examples include:
1 Beauty for ashes ( a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.)
2 Jesus gave His life that we may live.
3 He received stripes from the scourging that we may receive healing ( through His stripes we are healed).
4 He bore our shame that we may share His Glory.
There are many more examples of Divine Exchanges when we think about it.
It is not natural to do this; give thanks FOR, not in, ALL circumstances. No, this is supernatural. We can only do this through the power of the Holy Spirit living and working in and through us.
I have and still do at times battle with this. I find in easier to give thanks IN all circumstances. The FOR all circumstances requires absolute trust , that no matter what, no matter how, somehow He will bring beauty out of the ashes of disappointment, somehow healing out of excruciating pain, somehow peace and joy out of heart-rending tragedy, somehow hope and blessings out of ( to us) hopeless situations.
In thanking Him FOR all circumstances we abandon all hope of us ever being able to rectify the situation. Instead we step out of the boat onto the water, we implicitly trust Him 'lock, stock and barrel'. This brings about a sea change - a profound or notable transformation, in us.
The situation may still look bleak but we know, we absolutely know He's in control, He brings us deeper into the "Light of His Presence that removes the sting from adversity." Bless His Holy Name.

Sassy Mom, you've been on my heart - praying that you have a lovely day and realize how much you have blessed and taught all of us.
Happy Thanksgiving, JC Family. Brie, your list was awesome. And I'll add, 'the Giving in Thanksgiving.'
Praying and giving thanks for all of you. Have a GREAT ONE!

  63. And whatever you do in word or deed do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. (Colossians 3:17). But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Corinthians 15:57). Oh, give thanks to the LORD! Call upon His name; make known His deeds among the peoples! (Psalm 105:1).

  68. What if, just for today I am thankful for EVERYTHING including giving thanks for everything starting with the adversity of my brother Keith having shingles on top of everything else?
    Dear Heavenly Father God,
Thank You for helping me to acknowledge and focus on all that has been good in my life and in the lives of my dear ones. Thank You that this mindset of Perpetual Thanksgiving and gratitude realize that all the good times far outweigh all the other times.
Even though my brother Keith seems to have shingles on top of every other challenge, discouragement, and life overwhelment. Thank You for helping me find a way to Thank You and see from Your Perspective.
Thank You for all the good things You have done, are now doing, and will do. Thank You that there are many more good days to come because You Are God YTF, and the Light of Your Presence removes satan's sting from adversity.
    In Jesus' Name. AMEN!
