Jesus Calling: October 29

Linger in My Presence a while. Rein in your impulses to plunge into the day's activities. Beginning your day alone with Me is essential preparation for success. A great athlete takes time to prepare himself mentally for the feat ahead of him before he moves a muscle. Similarly, your time of being still in my presence equips you for the day ahead of you. Only I know what will happen to you this day. I have arranged the events you will encounter as you go along your way. If you are not adequately equipped for the journey, you will grow weary and lose heart. Relax with me while I ready you for action.
Ephesians 2:10
English Standard Version

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

Hebrews 12:3
English Standard Version

Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted.

My Prayer
Lord, may I learn to rest in you and not just jump into the day without taking a moment to center myself on You and Your Word. The newspaper, the TV, my phone -- this should not be how I start my day, but rather I want to start it with You, in your Presence, talking to you. And then I can embrace the day as you Provide.

    1. Thank you Chris Payton for taking the time and care to not only post the devotionals but to look up each Bible verse and write them out for us! God bless you!
None of my Jesus Calling books Had the scriptures each written out. Often, my phone auto corrects and once in a while I press send right as I notice this happened. Let’s all express gratitude and grace as we know what was intended and we all make mistakes.

God is so faithful and good.
Spending time each morning with our Lord in prayer and in the living word is so important and deeply fulfilling. My husband and I pray together each morning and this starts our day with a heart of gratefulness. I find when I move to next doing things instead of going to Reading the word that my day starts a little off though. It is so true that spending time with our loving God first thing, before feeding the dogs or getting ready for teaching workout class this morning or any other distractions that my day, my heart are ready for God to use me to love on those that He puts in my path today, starting with loving on our amazing God.
This is the day that the Lord has made, we will rejoice and be glad in it!
      Love, prayers and blessings

    9. Amen! Thank you 4 this blog. Some days I can't find my Jesus Calling Book so it helps to be able to Google the date and Jesus Calling and you have the verses all written out too. This book has been a blessing to my life and my wife's life and our neighbors' lives. During Covid when people in our neighborhood were afraid to go to church, I started a small House Church. I led us, with The Holy Spirit's help, through the books of Acts, Matthew, and Mark. We also read Jesus Calling at the end of the service every week before praises and prayer requests. Thanks again for this blog and please pray for my neighbor Wendy's MS to be healed and pray for The Lord to provide a TV show or movie for me to do Set Lighting or Rigging Electrician on again through my IATSE Local Union. I thank and praise Jesus for such a great year and a half at work after the Covid break(when all production had been shut down). I praise Him for His provision through this time of unemployment. May my joy stay as full as my oil supply. Lift me up in prayer brothers and sisters. My name is Tucker and my wife is Desiree. And lift my neighbors Mike and Wendy up as well. Like I said previously, Wendy has MS. She is in the hospital right now with Shingles, which I've heard can be particularly difficult on top of MS. Thank you brothers and sisters in Christ. "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, Have mercy on me." HE IS RISEN INDEED HALLELUJAH!

    1. Same here. I realized it was not the original Sarah Young posting, but a rather poor copy of it. Didn't realize there were immitations out there. I had to look up hers to concentrate on today's message. Glad I wasn't the only one.

    3. We cannot find
fault with a “posting” in this blog. I can’t start my day without it. Misuse of words is irrelevant.
We should all be grateful and focus on the words and the content, which are both great blessings. I’d think many of us own Sarah’s book, but the prayers, breakdown of passages, and comments are beyond uplifting
additions. If we start our days quickly, and can’t get to the “hard copy” this site is a treasure to behold

  7. I begin my day always in the presence of God, Our Father. I lift up my voice in prayer and praise to him who created this body and thank Him for listening and answering of my prayers.
I read and study several devotionals; scripture readings they provide and think about what is being said.
I read my bible, and again study and think of what is being said.
I then ask God to bless me with the presence of His Holy spirit to live within me and guide me through the day.
I have been taught by God to serve him; to be ever obedient to him and to constantly walk in his footsteps through each day.
This is how I begin each and every day, FIRST AND FORMOST, without any hesitation, and in return God gives me peace and love in my heart so I can reach out and share that love and compassion with all others.
PRIVATE TIME WITH GOD is the only way to begin your day. Thank You Jesus for this time each morning.

  12. I learned today’s lesson while I was playing football in high school. I had this ritual I went through before each game which prepared me body, mind, and spirit. I honed my focus so I was ready to take the challenges I would face, I built up my desire to do my absolute best, I centered myself on being faithful to my assignments. Then came the homecoming game with all its distractions leading up to the game which I got caught up in and didn’t go through my usual period of preparation. I played the worst game of my career. I have taken that lesson into my relationship with my Lord and my service of Him. To God be the glory.

  14. Once again a time of prayer at 3 to 4 a.m. While I awoke and would prefer to sleep, the quiet stillness of sitting in the dark with just God is comforting. It also makes prayer and time here on the JC blog (and in community) a true blessing.

"Only I know what will happen to you this day," reminds me of that God will equip me and give me what I need for today's challenges and use me to bless others, if I am willing. And so, I can pray and prepare myself with the scripture here and today's message. "For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works..."

May all of this community be blessed today, may your day's troubles be managed with peace that God is here walking and holding your hand, and may we all gain faith. Godspeed JC warriors, Amen.

  15. Meaningful words, MadFox and much needed prayer, Chris. Today is my husband's 3 month check up with the Oncologist. We have had nothing but good news yet, I find myself worrying, which I hate. My journey with him through open heart surgery 13 years ago in November and then Cancer 6 years ago - again in November have left me with doubt, which I don't understand because God has delivered him. I am having some physical difficulties and I won't go to the Dr. b/c I'm afraid. There - I said it. I went to Counseling 3 years ago b/c I was seeking my solace by drinking too much. God helped me rein it in but I'm sharing this with you, JC Family - I feel myself slipping and it scares me. We are social drinkers and it's not something I want to give up completely, but I need to practice balance, which I know I can do when I stay my mind on Him. Please pray with me. This was hard for me to confess but I felt a need to.
I can beat myself to a bloody pulp so fast. Yesterday's words were healing. MadFox, I repeated to myself what you said to Loveconquersall. I am quick to forgive others, but not myself. Why? One of my favorite pastors, who now awaits the Return, used to say, "Asking why is like driving down the street with your eyes watching the rear view mirror." I tell myself to forgive myself, but my mind goes back to the same hateful thoughts about myself.
I have to get ready for work and then come home to meet my hubby for his appointment. Yes, Lord, only you know what will happen this day. I pray that I will BELIEVE and TRUST that Your Grace is sufficient for me. I feel ashamed that I know His Word and have believed it since I was a child but in all honesty, my actions are saying differently.
Remind me again - "For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works..." Thank you for your prayers this day. I am praying for each of you. And, Sassy Mom - what a blessing to read about Angela's healing!!
I'll share today's results when I am able.

    10. Norah. Fear is a liar, and of the evil one. In general, non-sexist terms, mothers and wives tend to worry about the future a lot. Men, typically and statistically, die before their wives. A wife worries about his health as we pass thru middle age and have serious illnesses for the first time. Further, children are typically nurtured more and loved tenderly by their moms. Again, in general, as we all know loving caring men/father/sons. So, we can say that personality type "worries" about the future... despite Father/Son admonitions to let Him take care of our futures beyond today. Have peace today, as you can see, beyond your family and friends, that the JC community is wrapping you in love and praying for you.

Regarding alcohol, work, tobacco, obsessions/hobbies, drugs... all can be used as enablers of addiction, but in my experience and opinion, it is a personality and psychological disposition that is "released" by an addictive substance or activity. I would say that your recognition of your circumstances means this fear is also of less concern but certainly reducing your intake of alcohol is probably a good idea.

In summary, God has you firmly by the hand today. He will guide you as Sarah has written in the past few months through this rough path. Jesus reminded us all: "Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me." John 14:1

  22. Dearest Prayer Warriors - "thank you" seems so weak in comparison to your love and commitment to me and my family. I am happy (giddy?) to report that my husband got the "ALL CLEAR" today and the Dr. has extended his visits to 4 months. I am so utterly tired that I'm in tears - of joy and exhaustion! 25. THOUGHTS ON INTIMACY WITH OUR LORD

(Again, back to the analogy of a time spent with someone who is very dear to you.) As you say good-bye to this blessed individual in your life, you leave the designated place of your meeting and move on to what is next on your schedule. Though you say goodbye (an acronym for 'God be with you'), you don't really leave that person for the love you shared goes with you, thus your beloved remains with you. Such is the power of love. And as you go, the beautiful experience you have just shared impacts your reactions/responses as you go your way. You will find yourself practicing more patience, kindness, generosity, gentleness, and self-control to those you meet. You will be showing more mercy, grace, and love to those with whom God intersects your life's path. This is the result of a blessed time of love in a relationship here on earth. It has a residual effect that impacts others. Think back to such an experience you have had.

So, too, should be the result of our time of intimacy with our Lord. Upon its completion and as we move back into the world, the love we shared with our Lord should be felt by others. Though we have concluded our quiet time, there is no conclusion to it for love experienced is eternal in nature and has no end. A meaningful quiet time brings blessing to the world. We personify God's love for all. My thoughts go back to one of the invitatory psalms used to lead us into our devotional time, Psalm 67, which expresses desire for God's blessing so that vs. 5 - 'all the peoples praise You', vs. 7 - 'all the ends of the earth revere Him'. This is the result of a meaningful time of intimacy with our Lord, people are loved as we have been loved. A meaningful quiet time is not only for our good but for the good of all.

In your devotional time and in this blog, you are shown love and see yourself as loved. Like James 1:22-25 says, you have looked into the mirror to see you are loved, do not go off and promptly forget what you look like. Never lose track of that eternal truth. God be with you. With love, Bob

  26. I decided to check in on tomorrow's JC, so THAT would be in the forefront of my mind when I fall asleep. My goodness - what happens in a year?? I still revel at the thought of your confidence in me, my dear brothers and sisters in Christ.
More importantly, MadFox, I read my heart's sharing in light of YOU this year. See the angst that I went through, waiting on my hubby's results? Now you know what I was going through and now you and I have connected in that same situation, only with you in that 'waiting seat.' So, I repeat to you, Dear Brother, your words - please take them to heart. Here we are, a year later (4 month visits instead of 3; still Cancer Free), and your words ring true. "In summary, God has you firmly by the hand today. He will guide you as Sarah has written in the past few months through this rough path. Jesus reminded us all: "Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me." John 14:1" Truer words were never spoken, MadFox. You and your family are solidly in my heart as I go to sleep tonight. Be not afraid...Love to all of you.

  29. Psalm 5: 3 – “In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly.”

Heavenly Father, You are in ultimate control of this universe, and I trust You enough, to take responsibility for my life while confidently trusting Your Sovereignty . Knowledge of all Your scriptural promises is an enormous comfort. You hear the cries of Your children and encourage us to relax and let You be God. You promised us rest for our soul, so may I take Your yoke, Your burden and walk with You in the rhythms of grace. May Your Word be the first thing I give my heart and mind to every blessed awaken morning, so that I too can boldly declare as the Psalmist in 138:8. Let the morning bring me word of Your unfailing love (my love will fail, but Yours never will), for I have placed my trust in You. Show me the way I should go (show me Lord, each day), for to You I entrust my life (this life You have given me, is not my own, it is Yours and I trust You with all of it). I realized that whenever I start my day without putting You first, it goes downhill from there, and this is not my wish. I desire to always jump start my day with You and live with purpose, so thank You that I can relax with You while You ‘ready me for each day’s action.’ Thank You for Jesus and Your sufficient grace. Amen.

Lamentations 3:25-26 – “The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.”

Micah 7:7 – “But as for me, I watch in hope for the Lord, I wait for God my Savior; my God will hear me.”

Psalm 84:5 – “Blessed are those whose strength is in you, whose hearts are set on pilgrimage. As they pass through the Valley of Baka, they make it a place of springs, the autumn rains also cover it with pools. They go from strength to strength till each appears before God in Zion.”

    Blessings and Peace.

  40. BEACH DEVOTION: PACKING UP
One of the saddest parts about leaving a beautiful beach, or any vacation, is leaving it when we’d rather linger.
The child with us, or in us begs, Do we have to leave? Oh, can’t we stay just a little bit longer?
Yet we pack up, we say our good byes, we shake off the sand until the next time.
Some of us depart in a hurry, thinking the quicker the departure, the fewer the heart pangs. Some of us linger, long after our set departure time, getting one last look, one last hug, one last memory, one last good bye before our final departure.
Which departure describes our prayer life?
Is today a day we race through, as though time with our Creator is another item to check off our to-do list?
Or is today a day we silence all those worldly voices competing for our attention, making them wait to plunge us into the day's activities, until after we spend time lingering in our Maker’s Presence for a while?
When we reach our human limit, we want more than anything else to rein in our impulsiveness, linger in stillness with Him, drinking deeply until we are refreshed and renewed, and then remain in His Presence until His Peace, His Comfort, and His Rest fall afresh on us.
When is the last time we had that type of lingering communion with Him?
If today we hear His Voice, will we welcome Jesus, linger with Him, give Him time to speak, and ourselves time to listen?
When we decide to, we will have taken steps of essential preparation for success, and rise contentedly mindful that He is remaining with us every minute of the day, even when it becomes busy.
Better still, unlike our beach vacations, memories of our lingering visit with Him never have to end, but only continued, next time.

BEACH VERSE: FROM JOHN 15: Make yourself at home with Me, lingering in My Love. I love you just as the Father loves Me. Live lingering within My love. When you obey Me you are living in my love, just as I obey My Father and live lingering in His love. I have told you all this so that you will be filled with My joy. Yes, your cup of My joy will overflow!

MY PRAYER FOR US: Dear Heavenly Father God,
We want to be at home lingering with You. Would You help us to linger when we are abiding with You, even when our commitment to abide and linger wanes?

  41. Your words spoke right to my heart dear Brie! I have been so busy with my family. And have had to do my prayers today in bits and pieces but I have stopped to talk to Him whenever I could catch my breath. Was at my little Gabriel's Halloween parade this morning watching him and the other 3 year olds in their costumes. So very cute!!! Afterwards we had delicious pizza and it was fun. Then I cooked a big meal for the family and we watched Charlie Brown's The Great Pumpkin. But my sister in love is coming tomorrow or should I say today for dinner so I stayed up to make her favorite potato salad and some nice vegees to go with my ribs. I have two good things to share. God has been so faithful to me. One of the cuts I got when I tripped over Gabriel's tricycle didn't look good and hurt me. I went to the doctor and PRAISE GOD, it is not infected. He said the redness around the cut is because it's trying to close up so it pulls the skin around it. I learned I was doing everything wrong. I must not put adhesive bandages on it, or soak it in warm water. Just wash it with soap and water twice a day and put neosporin on it and cover it with a plain gauze pad. I'm blessed to know now how to take care of it. The second great gift from God to share is that our prayers has been answered for our middle son who lost his job during Covid and just had his second child on Sept 1st. He told us he got a job today. It is a challenging position and he's nervous but he's excited so we are so happy and excited too. I will have to spend more time now with my dear daughter in love and help her with the two children. He'll be going to the city 3 days a week and then working from home the other two. God is just so good and I am so grateful for His faithfulness! My cup of His Joy and Love is overflowing! And while I was holding baby Nathaniel tonight I just kept thanking God for my little Grands that bless my tired heart all the time. Lingering with God is the best thing we can do in our day. He is with us every step of the way. We must just acknowledge His presence and not be in a rush to leave Him.
    Amen Brie.
Lord, Help us to linger with You longer, and not let go of Your Mighty Hand. Amen

Thanks sweet Jan! I am savoring the special moments. Last night my little Gabriel who was sitting at the dinner table asked his parents: “Can I go up and hug Nani?” It blessed my heart. After he finished dinner he did just that! He always drags me by the hand to watch cartoons with him or play catch, or paint pictures. I feel his great love every day. Baby Nathaniel is so tiny and helpless. All he has to do is look into my eyes and my heart melts. My other two grandsons will be visiting in a couple of weeks and we will all visit my Mom together. All 4 babies will be there! That will be one joyful reunion. How wonderful it is that you have by able to watch your Grands grow up! That’s an awesome blessing from God!! 54. Watching an instructional video yesterday, part of the background music was a short piece by W. A. Mozart; Laudate Dominium.
The words are from Psalm 117: "1 Praise the LORD, all you nations; extol him, all you peoples.
2 For great is his love toward us, and the faithfulness of the LORD endures forever. Praise the LORD."
The version I heard was beautifully sung by Kiri Te Kanawa
I just couldn't help myself rising in praise to our wonderful God on hearing this Psalm set to music; thanking Him for His great love, for His mercy and faithfulness.
This was a truly delightful opportunity to " linger in His Presence awhile "

    1. Continued prayers for you and your family, Jeanne. God sees your life. He knows exactly what is going in your life. He is fully aware of the challenges and difficulties that you and your family are facing, and He will not forget you. He says in Isaiah 49:16 "Behold, I have engraved you on the palm of my hands."
Our God is perfect love, and He is absolutely faithful to His children. HALLELUJAH!!!

    2. You blessed and lifted my day! Thank you dear JJ!! I am well taken care of because He knows my Name. I am a sheep in His flock and He loves me with an everlasting love.It is a difficult time but I never walk alone. He covers me with His peace and empowers me with His strength in my body, mind and spirit. And I’m blessed with long suffering which I need so much. Everything is according to His perfect timing and His Will and Plan. He will lead me by my hand through this day. Resting in Him Who loves us.

      Ephesians 3:20
Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us,

    5. Thanks dear Blessings from NY and Audra. Your prayers mean so much to me. We all miss our dear Beth and know she is with the Lord and her soul is free. We’re all relieved God’s mercy took her out of her misery and she didn’t suffer long. It was an emotional day with some tension between family members. Janet and I are determined to keep our mother out of a nursing home because that’s her request. I saw some improvement in her thinking. She may actually attend the Funeral. God is leading it all. Thank You Jesus.

  59. Just Declaring over my Beloved JCFAMILY/WARRIORS that our Mighty God is leading you by the Still Waters.
He is leading you to the place of Plenty; there is NO LACK. He is leading you to the places of Life and Blessing, where you FLOURISH! Decaring you will ALWAYS be at the RIGHT PLACE at the RIGHT TIME, leading you to VICTORY! I proclaim your enemy's demise! I Declare "The Lord is our Rock, our Fortress and Deliverer."
(Psalm 18:2) Know that the enemy has NO rock, NO fortress, NO deliverer. He is a DEFEATED LIAR and is DEFENSELESS! Celebrate your future! It is BRIGHT!!! HALLELUJAH!!!

  60. Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from Him. (Psalm 62:1). The LORD is in His holy temple; let all the earth be silent before Him. (Habakkuk 2:20). After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. (1 Kings 19:12).

  61. Here I am, once again
    I pour out my heart
For I know that You hear
    Every cry
    You are listening
No matter what state my heart is in

    You are faithful to answer
    With words that are true
And a hope that is real
    As I feel Your touch
    You bring a freedom
    To all that's within
In the safety of this place
    I'm longing to...

    Pour out my heart
To say that I love You
    Pour out my heart
To say that I need You
    Pour out my heart
    To say that I'm thankful
    Pour out my heart
    To say that you're wonderful
