Jesus Calling: January 21

I want you to be all Mine. I am weaning you from other dependencies. Your security rests in Me alone--and not in other people, not in circumstances. Depending only on Me may feel like walking on a tightrope, but there is a safety net underneath: the everlasting arms. So don't be afraid of falling. Instead, look ahead to Me. I am always before you, beckoning you on--one step at a time. Neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, can separate you from My loving presence.
Deuteronomy 33:27
English Standard Version
The eternal God is your dwelling place,
and underneath are the everlasting arms.
And he thrust out the enemy before you
and said, ‘Destroy.’

Romans 8:39
English Standard Version
nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

My Prayer
Lord, I haven't much strength at the moment, so this should remind that You are my strength. I seemed to have picked up a sickness bug. So, in these moments, use this time to help me depend on You even more. It's in this weakness that I can see more clearly my need for You. As these words state, my security is in You.

You are Power. You have everlasting arms. The enemy is not over You, but is under Your power. You keep me safe in your everlasting arms. (Reminds me of "Rest in Your Arms" by the Imperials).

  2. Yes, thankful for this Jesus Calling forum and/or blog, and/or community. @paytonfamily, did you ever think 6 years later, it would be so helpful to so many? I would guess not.

This past week in the topic of Trust. Now in hindsight, we all can see God holding your hand in 2013's rough/steep spots and touching lives far off in the future of 2019! Awesome! God moves in mysterious ways! Ha ha.

Sir, I so appreciate your blog. I have read Jesus Calling many times through. I had two copies I
gave one to my sister several years back and left one in my husband‘s truck so he could read each day when he got to work or was on his lunch hour. Last February 2018 I decided to do a challenge to not even get out of bed until I read Jesus calling. Nearly a year I am still at it, but-what makes it so wonderful is that your blog you have added all the scripture that goes along with the reading… Not to mention your sweet sincere prayers. Thank you for the time that you put Into this blog and your ministry back in 2013. I am April by the way

And, special thanks to the Payton Family for continuing this post. It really is amazing how posts from 6 years ago are pertinent today. Only God can do that! :)

  12. This blog, of which I too am a faithful follower, is a reflection of God's eternal nature. As I sit here today in a room 5 feet from my family, as I am somewhat separated from being able to be with my wife due to 10 years of relapses (substance-abuse), I am thankful for God's 2nd chances, and for His mercy and unfailing love.

I am so blessed with the Lords love. I dont know which side of the use you are experiencing, if its your use or your wifes. Either way I belive that we need these experiences, just like the blog was saying, He is weaning us from other dependicies. In our trials we learn to trust Him. Prayers for you and your family

  13. Thank you for the kind words. Yes, I never would have imagined this would have resulted in a community of encouragement and prayer support as the writer of Hebrews states in 10:24-25. I was simply wanting to write out the verses so I could see them along with the text and then echo these words back to Him in a prayer at times. We have an amazing God that takes our somewhat little acts of service and grows them into a beautiful garden, as Paul states in I Corinthians 15:58 (paraphrased by Eugene Peterson) "Nothing we do for Him is a waste of time or effort."

  14. I am so grateful for these words today. The Holy Spirit speaks to me directly today in this devotional. I have been anxious and afraid with flooding around my house. I do not know how to deal with the damage all the flooding has caused. I am reminded that my security does rest in the Lord and not in others. When I can truly believe this I have peace. Circumstances may be out of my control but never out of the control of Jesus.

  21. The God of Restoration has done it again!!! 3 loved ones "accidentally" bumped into each other while shopping in ANOTHER TOWN.(A husband and wife, and sister of the wife had not spoken in ages) The instrument God used is a precious little puppy. The sister took this opportunity to introduce the puppy to the couple. What are the chances of meeting someone you know while shopping in another town you never go to? Happenstance? I think not, God works in mysterious ways.

  22. Before I write a post from my devotional time this AM, I want to say how beautiful and touched I am by the posts that have been made today and those that are retained from the past. As I spend this week reflecting on the unity of the Body of Christ, it is experienced here. Thanks, Chris, for providing this space and maintaining it.

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, Day Four. From Acts 27:18-28:10, today's verses from 27:23-26: (vs.22, I (Paul) urge you now to keep up your courage, for there will be no loss of life among you, but only of the ship). For last night there stood by me an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I worship, and he said, "Do not be afraid, Paul; you must stand before the emperor; and indeed, God has granted safety to all those who are sailing with you." So keep up your courage, men, for I have faith in God that it will be exactly as I have been told. But we will have to run aground on some island.

Wasn't Paul experiencing exactly what today's JC reading was saying to each of us. "I, the Lord God, have got you regardless of the circumstances! You WILL make it." God had willed that Paul make it to Rome to appear before the emperor and that is guaranteed to be fulfilled. The journey there is going to included severe storms and ultimately a shipwreck but even those devastating experiences cannot and will not thwart the plan. A great truth of life beyond understanding but no less real.

Jesus prayed for the unity of all believers (John 17:21) and it will occur. The path can be as shaky as the tightrope analogy in the JC reading, but the destination will be reached. Keep looking ahead, don't look down, focus on the next step. Psalm 56 is a good prayer of trust in the midst of hardship. Be blessed!

Thanks for being here. God be with you.

    1. Thank you Bob for sending me to my Bible today in search of PS 56. " Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You." Yes, I read and believe. But do I act? Sometimes my fear takes over my belief. As a woman home alone, I recently opened my front door to who I thought was my neighbor calling. There stood a disheveled homeless man in a torn and tattered old bedspread. Did I respond with compassion? No. I responded with fear for my safety and slammed the door in his face hurrying to lock it. I believe God sends me lots of chances to walk my talk, I just wish sometimes they weren't so "in my face". I hear disappointment ...as if from Monopoly... do not pass go, do not collect $200. -audra

    2. Audra. You should not be alarmed or disappointed in your reaction. Homelessness is a real problem and most cities are well equipped to help those WANTING help. The homeless often do resort to petty theft and can be violent depending on the mental state of that person. The estimates of mental illness in the homeless is incredibly high, So, he should not being knocking on doors in neighborhoods, he should be seeking shelter with a church or city homeless program. Sadly, you had every right to be scared. If you want to help, volunteer to serve food at a shelter and let go of your guilt and render compassion in a SAFE way. We have an active homeless assistance program at our church, and I am sharing from a place of knowledge. Peace Audra. your heart is in the right place and there is a way to help... it's not however at your front door when you are home alone.

    3. Thank you, Bob, for sharing your Week of Prayer for Christian Unity reflections. I agree, today's prayer is on point with today's JC devotion. God's got this! Whatever "this" is for each one of us yesterday, today and tomorrow. This JC devotional is giving me just the reminder I need each day. I believe the more I see it, read it and live it, the more I will truly believe it.

Audra, I am in agreement with MadFox. There are many homeless people in many communities, but there are programs. My husband went through a terrible mental health crisis several months ago. He decided to "hang out" with the homeless people in our community for a time. I have learned a good deal about the correlation with homelessness and mental illness. I admittedly am frightened when put in a situation with a homeless person, if by myself, specifically because I am not sure where their mental state is and what harm they could do...purposely or by accident. I know God is with each of us in every situation, but I believe we are given brains to discern what we should do in certain circumstances. I believe my husband could have harmed someone during his mental health crisis, and am thanking God that he didn't. Helping out in a controlled, safe environment is a good idea from MadFox, in my opinion. I am going to take the suggestion to heart and see what I can do in my local community to volunteer to help out.

Blessings and prayers for each person on here! Thank you to those always praying for me! CO

    4. Audra, MadFox is right - YOU were right to guard yourself. I meet many people like this every day, but I am in a City Building with armed Officers all over the place. They see someone in my office and check on me. I get nervous at times b/c several of them know where we live. They see us out and about and I know that b/c of their mental illness, I am right to have boundaries. You were right to have boundaries. If you want to serve, there are plenty of places, as MadFox said. Bless your heart for wanting to give. Many don't. You can pray for him. One time a guy came to our door after we were in bed. I turned the light on but never opened the door. I offered to call for help if he wanted/needed it (saying it through the door. My husband was saying, "DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR!"). He walked away. I prayed for him, let the police know there was someone wandering around the neighborhood knocking on doors and went back to bed. Have to admit I was rattled...
Matthew 10:16 King James Version (KJV)
16 Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.
I love your heart to want to serve! You are wise to be cautious.

      Delete
    5. CO and Norah, glad you added your thoughts along the same lines. As a Dad and husband, I do tend to be cautious with these situations with my family. Mentally ill folks or a male high on some drugs can be physically daunting to fight off as a woman or man. So appreciate two women confirming the diagnosis! Be at peace Audra, God will use you in other ways.

    6. Thank you all for posting comments of support for our sister in Christ. I support your advice to her. There is genuine help for these people if they truly wanted it. During our Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, the local churches gathered are supporting an effort to help the people who are truly seeking help. I have learned from an experienced friend that the majority of homeless people have intentionally chosen to be homeless for a variety of reasons. But for those who truly want to be helped, they turn to the agencies that can help them, they don't go from door to door. God be with you Audra!

Audra, I would have done exactly the same thing. And after he left I would have called the police to alert them to a homeless man going door to door.
But for the grace of God we could be homeless too. I too fear the homeless because we can’t know their state of mind, nor their degree of desperation. Only God knows. But I try to give some of them a kind word and sometimes money or food. But I would not open my door to them especially if I was alone. I do pray for 2 of them that I know by name. Prayer is the answer and the solution.

  24. I am blessed to be in Your Presence this day oh Lord, fully equipped with Your strength, mercy, grace and many others. For that, I say Thank You!

Thank You for expressing Your desire that I acknowledge and accept You as the Supreme Being and expressing Your desire to associate with and have a relationship with those who accept You as their God.

Thank You that, once I understand Your desires in having a relationship with me, I more than ever recognize I truly need You. The apostle Paul writes: “There is no question of our having sufficient power in ourselves, we cannot claim anything as our own. The power we have comes from God” (2 Corinthians 3:5).

Thank You for creating me to have a special Father-child relationship with You and weaning me from other dependencies.

Thank You for the security found in You and not in people or circumstances.

Thank You that absolutely NOTHING can separate us from Your love. With You on our side, how can we ever lose?

Thank You that You didn’t hesitate to put everything on the line for us, embracing our conditions, exposing Yourself to the worst when You sent Your Son Jesus to die for us. No troubles, no hard times, no hatred, no lack, no threats, no angelic or demonic forces, not the living nor the dead, high or low, not even the worst sin in scripture can drive a wedge between us and the love of our Master, Jesus Christ! Is there anything that You wouldn’t do for us? NO! So THANK YOU LORD!

Thank You that the nature of the relationship we have with You is boldly described by the Apostle John in 1 John 3:1-3. “Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! . . . Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure”!

Thank You Father, for just another day to say THANK YOU and walk in the light of Your Presence one step at a time.

Praying for all the concerns and requests.

  27. Joining in Week of Prayer For Christian Unity 2021:
Day 4, Praying together: “I do not call you servants any longer... but I have called you friends” (John 15:15)
    Scripture
Romans 8:26-27, The Spirit helps us in our weakness
Luke 11:1-4, Lord, teach us to pray
    Meditation
God thirsts for a relationship with us. God searches for us as God searched for Adam, calling him in the garden: “Where are you?” (Genesis 3:9)

In Christ, God came to meet us. Jesus lived in prayer, intimately united to his Father, while creating friendships with his disciples and all those he met. He introduced them to that which was most precious to him: the relationship of love with his Father, who is our Father. Jesus and his disciples sang psalms together, rooted in the richness of their Jewish tradition. At other times, Jesus retired to pray alone.

Prayer can be solitary or shared with others. It can express wonder, complaint, intercession, thanksgiving or simple silence. Sometimes the desire to pray is there, but one has the feeling of not being able to do so. Turning to Jesus and saying to him, “teach me,” can pave the way. Our desire itself is already prayer.

Getting together in a group offers us support. Through hymns, words and silence, communion is created. If we pray with Christians of other traditions, we may be surprised to feel united by a bond of friend- ship that comes from the One who is beyond all division. The forms may vary, but it is the same Spirit that brings us together.

    Prayer
Lord Jesus, your entire life was prayer, perfect harmony with the Father. Through your Spirit, teach us to pray according to your will of love. May the faithful of the whole world unite in intercession and praise, and may your kingdom of love come. Amen.

    1. John 15:15 has special significance for DH and me. A priest homilied John 15: 15 at one of our Wedding Anniversary celebrations. He talked about names we call ourselves and others when mistakes are made. He continued by saying, Yet Jesus, Who knows more about us and our errors than any one else, chose to call us friends. Following Jesus, through the ascents, descents, times when we err and times when we succeed, we are still known as His Friends, and that is what we can start calling ourselves and each other: FRIENDS OF JESUS!
What A Friend We Have In Jesus!

    3. Thank you for sharing that sweet story. I probably call Rick “Honey” most of the time. Blessed to know we are all among friends and we all have the greatest Friend! 😊
As a born again believer in a Catholic Church who was blessed to be asked by the Deacon who was leaving and our Pastor to take over the Bible group 6 years ago, I have often talked about the fact that Jesus calls all of us to follow Him and wants everyone to say “Yes” to Him. He never regards a group or person as better than another for any reason. Everyone is equal and worthy to be His friends and become His family. His invitation to be loved and love is extended to all people. There are no divisions in His loving eyes. Sometimes my Bible members would argue that Our Catholic Church is the only true Church. I always told them to look at all the religions and concentrate on the similarities and not the differences. If they love and follow Jesus they are His family and our brothers and sisters.
I am praying that He guides our new President to tear down the walls that divide us and unite us all in His love and peace.

I pray my Papa God will light up each of your pathways with His living light. You will not go to the right or to the left, but you will be bound to His pathway. Remember, God doesn't always choose "The Most Perfect" for His jobs. Look at the Rahab narrative in Joshua 2. If you have ever stamped "disqualified" on youself due to your personality or something in your past or present, then let Rehab's story encourage you. My previous Papa God, thank you for looking deeper than what others see, and for seeing each one's potential. Please help us trust that You want us just as we are and have a plan to use us in Your Kingdom. Help us to trust You and Your plan for each of our lives. Papa, You know areas in our lives and our families that are weak. Shape them this year in ways that could only reflect Your power working in and around us. And last but not least, for my JCFAMILY, I proclaim the Lord's Glory is your covering today and His favor and healing hand surrounds you as a shield. 41. " I want you to be all Mine"
The first line today reminded me of a precious hymn I haven't sung for a while.
As a means of consecration it is good to say or sing this to the Lord of your life.
1 Take my life and let it be
    consecrated, Lord, to thee.
    Take my moments and my days;
let them flow in endless praise,
let them flow in endless praise.
2 Take my hands and let them move
at the impulse of thy love.
Take my feet and let them be
    swift and beautiful for thee,
    swift and beautiful for thee.
3 Take my voice and let me sing
    always, only, for my King.
Take my lips and let them be
    filled with messages from thee,
    filled with messages from thee.
    4 Take my silver and my gold;
not a mite would I withhold.
    Take my intellect and use
every power as thou shalt choose,
every power as thou shalt choose.
    5 Take my will and make it thine;
it shall be no longer mine.
    Take my heart it is thine own;
it shall be thy royal throne,
it shall be thy royal throne.
6 Take my love; my Lord, I pour
at thy feet its treasure store.
Take myself, and I will be
    ever, only, all for thee,
    ever, only, all for thee.

  57. As you know I have been trying to incorporate each day's devotion and/or Bible Verses into my life. Yesterday's devotion challenged me to ...Approach this day with awareness of who is BOSS. As you make plans for the day, remember that it is I who orchestrate the events of your life...

Did you know there is a prayer called
the BOSS I JUST DON'T KNOW prayer? I didn't know either until my cousin sent this to me because it fit the BOSS devotion:
THE BOSS prayer is very Spiritual.
You just go off somewhere to a really quiet and hidden place, and you walk right up into The Heart of God and you say, BOSS, I JUST DON'T KNOW...
BOSS, I JUST DON'T KNOW where to go from here.
BOSS, I JUST DON'T KNOW what is happening.
BOSS, I JUST DON'T KNOW how to process this.
BOSS, I JUST DON'T KNOW what to do with these emotions.
BOSS, I JUST DON'T KNOW how to handle this situation.
The BOSS I JUST DON'T KNOW prayer covers a lot of I JUST DON'T KNOWs.
And then with whatever tiny little dusty mustard seed grain of faith you can mustar, you say,

    But BOSS, YOU KNOW.

And then, you leave it there.
I DON'T KNOW MUCH, but I DO KNOW HOW MUCH I need this prayer.
Our Good GOD, certainly hears that BOSS, I JUST DON'T KNOW prayer.

Thanking God, our Boss, Father/Friend for being my Safety Net each day! He guards my heart, my words, my actions and my steps. His Spirit has turned me in the opposite direction so many times. To be so completely loved and understood is the biggest blessings anyone could ask for and we receive them just by being His Children. We know our needs will be provided because only He knows them and sometimes what He provides is not what we thought we needed. Like my favorite cumulus clouds yesterday all lit up from the sun behind them. Such a good Father! He made me smile!
