Jesus Calling: January 5

You can achieve the victorious life through living in deep dependence on Me. People usually associate victory with success: not falling or stumbling, not making mistakes. But those who are successful in their own strength tend to go their own way, forgetting about Me. It is through problems and failure, weakness and neediness that you learn to rely on Me.
      True dependence is not simply asking Me to bless what you have decided to do. It is coming to Me with an open mind and heart, inviting Me to plant My desires within you. I may infuse within you a dream that seems far beyond your reach. You know that in yourself you cannot achieve such a goal. Thus begins your journey of profound reliance on Me. It is a faith-walk, taken one step at a time, leaning on Me as much as you need. This is not a path of continual success but of multiple failures. However, each failure is followed by a growth spurt, nourished by increased reliance on Me. Enjoy the blessedness of a victorious life, through deepening your dependence on Me.
Psalm 34:17-18
English Standard Version

When the righteous cry for help, the LORD hears
and delivers them out of all their troubles.
The LORD is near to the brokenhearted
and saves the crushed in spirit.

2 Corinthians 5:7
New King James Version
For we walk by faith, not by sight.

My Prayer (1/5/13)
Wow God. So, the secret to victorious living is not to try my hardest, but to relinquish all to you. Lord, how opposite to that have I trained myself to be in life. My dependence is not deep. Train me Lord to depend on You. Lord, in this time, when we are struggling to pay bills and have enough, in this adverse circumstance we find ourselves in, that in some ways we have chosen, change us. Help us to increase our dependence on You.

Lord, show me how to depend on Your strength. Help me to redefine success in life. So, that I'm walking in Victory versus aiming towards personal success.

Lord, I want your desires to be my desires. I want to be trained by You. Lord, I pray that you would start me going and I would follow, versus me deciding what I want and then asking You to bless it.

I admit that this reliance and trust and dependence on You is something that I don't completely comprehend. I can't see it. I don't know what it looks like. I want to see steps to this.

For instance, this car buying decision. I stare out at our finances and see we are already committed with our future money and to buy this car we need more future money. Can we survive without a car? Do I need to consider the bus or my bike? Lord, 3 months ago we started praying for a 3rd car and now we need a second car. I want to rely on You Lord.

Note: The devotion and scriptures are from author Sarah Young and you can find the book at many online and local stores.

  2. The Apollo 13 movie line, "Failure is not an option" was a great goal setting quote for a tragedy turned miracle mission. However, Jesus teaches that "Failure was the only option." The Apostles only later understand His Death (failure) as similarly going from tragedy turned miracle mission.

    Sadly, it has taken failure in differing facets of my life to realize I had approached many decisions asking for His approval instead of His input!

    1. When I look back on the path of my life, the greatest advancements occurred when He reversed the directions I was going and put me back on the path He had for my life. In those moments I deemed to be failures, I had to deal with discouragement and depression because things were not going my way. I had allowed my soul to become attached to things I wanted, so, letting go was not easy. It took some healthy failure which was more the case of Him taking from me than it was me letting go. So I look back on those moments I categorized as failures and am filled with praise and thanksgiving for each and every one of them. Without them, I shudder to think how life would have been. Thanks be to God!

    2. Interesting. "Taking from me than it was me letting go." I think you broke the code for me in my most recent life event. if I can't or won't depart the current path... then if I am sincerely praying for help on that path, He answered my prayer just not how I expected. Thank you, this is new perspective. i.e. taking vs. allowing translates to He was more active than I thought.

    3. I guess you could say I did let go but all I let go of was a dead dream that wasn't going anywhere as the Lord was pointing me elsewhere.

    6. I lived by the motto, Forgiveness is much easier to get than permission. Unfortunately, I tried to apply that motto to God.
      Wrong Answer!
      Now I seek to obtain God's Permission First, and His Forgiveness when I try to practice controlling my tongue, but fail. I hope He applies His 70 X 7 times = 490 forgivenesses to me each time!

    7. Interestingly, one of today's bible chapters is 2 Corinthians 5: 9 says "Aim" So our aim  is to please our Lord always in everything we do, whether we are here in this earthly body or away from it with Our Father Who Art in Heaven. Aim as did The Archer in Bob's post...much like an archer shooting at a target...
      The archer aims for the bull's eye and shoots with various degrees of accuracy, sometimes better than others, not always perfect....but continually trying to perfect his aim and his accuracy. Praying blessings over all the continuing practice aims of our JC family and thanking God we can openly share our varying degrees of accuracy at any given moment in time and receive each others' Loving Kindnesses that our Father in Heaven so freely gives us to re-gift.

    8. So many good responses. I can relate and I understand about letting go of dead dreams. I think it is hard to let go completely of the reins of our life. But only in complete surrender can we be pulled towards God’s will. He knows better and we must trust His direction. It may even mean letting go of things that we enjoy but He knows they distract us from following close to Him. I am always in need of His help, guidance, comfort and the joy only He can give me.
      Amen sweet Brie, We take the comfort and loving kindness He gives us and share it, and His love is spread to His glory. It’s a blessing to lift others as He lifts us.

      It is hard to understand the "failure" that Mary, the mother of Jesus undertook... but Mary, a young unmarried woman becomes pregnant... knowing the ramifications, she replies to the Angel, "I am the Lord's servant". Truly amazing faith.

In 2022, I made another life altering decision and soon found Jesus Calling again, this time on social media. I began reading it daily again. In December, I found this blog and have been encouraged, especially by the scriptures and prayers. Jesus is indeed calling us deeper and higher in him. I pray that we all are able to hear him purely above the hindering sounds of heaviness that life tries to leave us with. Holy Spirit, help us to go deeper and higher unhindered. I agree with Bright Star; the prayers and comments made by this JC Family are meaningful and helpful to me on a daily basis. Thank you everyone, for your contributions.

    "It is through problems and failure, weakness and neediness that you learn to rely on Me." This has proven to be so true for me. I thought I was reliant on God in my life, but realized I was only thinking I was relying on Him when things seemed to go my way. Boy, was I completely mistaken. I have learned reliance. I am human and still struggle, but it is when I am in these very deep, dark, hard places that I MUST rely on God to keep me afloat. He has never forsaken me; He is there, even when I can't see Him through the darkness. Trust. I have been given this gift. I trust You, Jesus! I trust that You are always there. Please continue to remind me of Your Presence when doubt creeps in. I love You, Jesus. CO

  9. This first Sunday of this new year and decade, my heart is overflowing with gratitude for Your unconditional Love for me! Thank You Lord that I can live a VICTORIOUS Life in deep dependence on You!

    The word of God teaches us that we can have glorious, daily victories: “For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace” (Romans 6:14).
    Also Romans 8:2 tells us, “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death," and in 1 Corinthians 15:57, “But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

    No enemy is too powerful for Christ Jesus! Thank God, through the victory of Jesus on the cross, this mighty enemy has been fully and totally vanquished!

    We must renounce the three foes: the world, the flesh and the devil. There must be no bargaining, no compromise, no hesitation!
    Absolute renunciation is the only possible way for us as believers to have victory in this life.
    As Christians, there is no excuse for not having daily victory in our lives by renouncing sin and, by faith, letting the Spirit of God have control of your life.

    It doesn't matter how many times you fail, He says just: "Enjoy the Blessedness of a Victorious life , through deepening your dependence on Me"!

    Stay Blessed and VICTORIOUS, family!

  11. Very thankful this lovely, cold, winter morning: for the sweet sleep I received, for my loving family, including my JC Family. Such honest sharing and praise for our Father through his Son Jesus Christ's victories. Let those victories be ours as well, dear Lord. Let me redeem the time you gave me today and not waste it for one minute in regret or fear of failure.
    I have a blessing to share: a dear friend of ours has many military members in her family. On Friday night, one of them was to deploy to Iraq on Sat. We were all praying for this young man and his dedication to God and Country. He received a message that he didn't have to go - not on this round. Praying for all of our military men and women and first responders, who selflessly give daily. Praying for our country and its leadership; may the naysayers lips be sealed and victory be God's.
    Praying for you and your family, God's Daughter, and for each of you wonderful Saints, relentlessly choosing His way. That is my prayer as well, Lord. That I recognize the calmness that comes from saying, "Your will be done. As Maplewood said, "there is not excuse..." it is ours for the choosing.
    God Bless each of you!

  12. On this particular Sunday, some churches will be celebrating Epiphany with the reading of Matthew 2:1-12, the coming of the magi. As I read today's Jesus Calling above, I couldn't help think that the magi reflected the admonition to us in the reading. The magi so earnestly sought truth that they were open to be led. When the star appeared, they followed not knowing where they were going but trusting the lead they were given. The result, they arrived at Jesus and were blessed. Openness to be led, desire for truth, and willingness to follow characterized their spirit and they were duly rewarded, as anyone will be in doing the same. Be blessed in your worship this day JC FAMILY!

  13. As many have written, this community has created an environment to share prayer needs and life challenges. I'm grateful to all here. Am glad to contribute and honored that my journey and the lessons learned are resonating with many of you. I pray that my contributions portray a humble servant who appreciates your kind words but is candidly sharing his failures and weaknesses in faith. As a family of believers gathering around Jesus via a blog which was also created by a brother who was moved to provide an e-version of Jesus Calling as he struggled years ago and found help by openly sharing online.

    "It is a faith-walk, taken one step at a time, leaning on Me as much as you need. This is not a path of continual success but of multiple failures." As an American, failure is often viewed negatively, although we also champion "the come-back kid". To all of you here, whether you comment or simply read along, may God use the group to foster further dependence on Him and that you recognize He is holding your hand as you sin (fail) time and time again.

    As our Father, he forgives... as our Savior he knows your struggles and has lived it too... and as the Spirit, He helps you to pray even when you're so defeated or depressed that you don't know what to pray. Godspeed this day and peace to you. Amen.

When I run out of the road of my planning that is usually when my most ernest prayers are spoken. Lord forgive me for my foolishness. Help me to seek first your will for my life. You addressed the issue of control by giving us free will, giving us choices, It is so freeing to know We have the choice always! " THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD I SHALL NOT WANT. HE MAKES ME LIE DOWN IN GREEN PASTURES; as well as "leading me beside the still waters"..either way "He restores my soul" Lord help me to Be lead by you willingly for when it is my choice to surrender to your will my life falls into a pattern that is best. 21. Yesterday and today's devotions brought my mind and ponderings to Jesus' road through Calvary and ultimately His Ascension and Seating at The Right Hand of God. He fell. Each time He fell, He got up until He took His last dying breath. So why do I feel so defeated when I try practicing to be like Jesus and I fall? Why do I let satan berate me, and try to keep me down and make me want to quit practice? I think no less of Jesus because He fell, in fact, I admire and try to imitate Him and all He did to get to God for us, so why would He think less of me when I fall while trying?
    Instead I am praying to focus as BOB shared yesterday...to miss the mark", much like an archer shooting at a target...
    The archer aims for the bull's eye and shoots with various degrees of accuracy, sometimes better than others, not always perfect....but continually trying to perfect his aim and his accuracy.
    Yet, It's so discouraging to continually miss the mark...
    EXCEPT when I recall a baby who is learning to walk. They don't seem to care, nor count, how many times they fall, nor as their parents, do we because we know that 'practice, fall, practice, fall, practice, fall etc etc etc', is the only way they can one day walk upright. Or hit the walk mark. So I guess I too, can pick myself up, dust myself off, and get back on the mark. Thanks for sharing BOB. This helped me to get up one more time and see things differently. I pray to stay on #TEAM JESUS and aboard Salvation Airline 2021. Prayers for you dear family. Please pray for me.
    Blessings in Jesus' Name. Amen.

    2. Great insights on both devotions Brie! There is no telling that we will fall, but as long as we pick ourselves up and keep our eyes FIXED on JESUS, the Author and Finisher of our faith, we will be alright!! Just like your analogy of a learning to walk baby, God has our back each time we slip and fall!!
      Blessings for staying on board Salvation Airline 2021, let's bring more on, there are still empty seats waiting and calling to be filled by Captain Emmanuel (GOD with US)!! It's gonna be a great journey with HIM!

      Stay blessed my sister.

    3. Awesome Brie! Just like a baby learning to walk, we fall and because of our faith, we get up again. His strong arms are what lift us high above every problem or situation. The joy He fills our hearts with is the only true joy.
      But I must admit my sweet grandson Gabriel sure does turn my frowns upside down! He is one of God’s greatest gifts to me. Especially right now. I remain blessed and with dear Maplewood and our JC family, I’m happily strapped in on board Salvation Airline 2021 with Captain Emmanuel in the driver’s seat.

  22. Thank you Brie. We have heard of childlike faith; you are pointing out a childlike perspective! One of awe and wonder.

    New discovery is here each moment but we often only see the "same old" or think "I've seen this before" and miss the discovery in this moment.

    But even that thought can bring our focus to performing, perfecting, and trying harder. Yes, these things are good but only with an openness to the beautiful child inside us as we are "learning to walk".

    What joy a parent has as their child takes these learning and slipping steps. Lord, help us see the beauty of what is in this moment as we share new perspectives with you.

  23. Eternal Father, As I face this new day, I cannot stand upright on my own, let alone take another step without You. But I am reminded that You, oh God, are my rock and my refuge and that I am more than a conqueror. I choose to believe that in faith. Grant me Your victory in all of my situations so that I fall into you and Win the battle for unshakable faith in my heart. With You there is victory and I trust You. Thank You for the mighty power that is in the name of Jesus. Amen.

    For us to live a victorious life, we must have the life of Peace and joy in God. It is a life that requires constant worship and fellowship with Him. It is a life that has victory over sin and it is the ONLY kind of life that glorifies our Father in Heaven. This Victory is by God’s grace and a gift from Him, it can never be earned. The good news is, it is available to all and any believer! Jesus offers every believer eternal life and victory over sin. We cannot seek salvation on our own, but rather through the Lord. Jesus said: “Come to Me, all you who are labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28). It’s not as simple, because while we are learning to walk in victory, we will have many falls, but we should pick ourselves up, confess our sins and start again, trusting and depending on Jesus as our Victory, and enjoy the Blessedness of the victorious life He promised us!

    Father, I pray for loved ones, friends and strangers who don’t know You. Some are far from You, and some are struggling to believe that You are a great God with good plans for their lives. Please reach them and breathe across their hearts to stir the embers that are in hiding. Be victorious in their hearts, so that they may know the richness and the power that comes from trusting You, and live the victorious life! I ask that they would see You with clarity, in Jesus’ name.

    “Thanks be to God who GIVES us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 15:57)

    Blessings and Peace.

    2. Dear waiting,
      I too was in waiting on a relationship to change. I dedicated a solid month of devoting all my prayers to that one situation. At the end of the month, there was Jesus. What had changed was my relationship with God. I became more focused on the Giver rather than the gift. My heartfelt prayers changed to praying for each of our relationships with God rather than with one another. The gift is still remembered fondly loved and cherished, but no longer is placed higher than the Giver and no longer matters as much as it once did. Praying for you and your estranged one and hope my experience helps you during The Waiting. Love and Blessings, Brie

    4. LOVE this song, Brie. When we look at every past or even present situation...There was Jesus! We just have to "see" with our faith and know He is with us ALWAYS. There is another song by Danny Gokey called, "Wanted" that brings me to tears regarding the HUGE mistakes I've made in my life and feeling like God couldn't possibly want me...look what I've done in my life. I would see Him bless others and be thrilled for them but feel unworthy or guilty if He blesses me...This song has been so therapeutic for me. When my kids have made mistakes, do I love them any less? No. Never. That love never changes. Ever. When I think of it this way and listen to the "Wanted" song, it helps me to breathe and to look ahead knowing God still loves me and always has. Humbling. Prayers & blessings for this JC family of mine.

  26. Good Morning JC family. I'd ask for prayers today. My mom is going to be 89 years old this year. Over the last few years her memory has been getting worse. She is a very proud (sometimes stubborn :) ) She frequently points the fingers at others when she doesn't remember something. She still lives by herself in a house and our concern now is for her safety. I keep asking God to show me how to talk with her in a compassionate way and a way she'll understand and not be angry or think we're trying to take over. Please pray for insight as I am very worried about her. Thanks to all. God Bless each of us that come to this blog for encouragement and refreshment. I truly appreciate all the different prayers and insights from each of you. Peace. JE

    Praying for you, Brie and that you see yourself as lovingly as all of us do and you do us!! Isn't it funny how we do that? We provide so much space and kindness to others and can be so hard on ourselves.
    This morning, I had faced the devil down re: health, not seeing myself as lovingly as my Father has encouraged me to and just general 'stuff.' My day has gone well.
    Please continue praying for me and my family. I got tested yesterday and will have the results in the couple of days. I really don't feel that bad - just getting tired of not being able to taste or smell, which I have to admit has curbed my appetite! :) Always a rainbow somewhere near, right?

  32. A frozen world earlier this am. In my chair, warm sunlight from a clear blue sky is bathing me in its radiance.
    I sat here, floored in His Presence. Overwhelmed in Worship.
    Eventually I said "Lord, You are here, I sense you all around me, take me deeper into yourself, draw me deeper into Heavenly places." He said, "Praising Me lifts you up into Heavenly places.
    Worshipping Me brings Heaven to where you are".

    My prayer inline with today's JC Blog is: 'Lord increase my dependence on You.
    Please plant your desires in me.
    Water them so that they grow.
    Feed them so that they bear much fruit for Your Glory.
    Infuse me with the dreams You have for me. Help me identify the 'dead' dreams I have and enable me to let them go.' In Jesus Name Amen.

    When the righteous cry for help, the LORD hears
    and delivers them out of all their troubles.
    The LORD is near to the brokenhearted
    and saves the crushed in spirit.
    This is a wonderful encoraging promise especially when we are going through trying times . We need physical encouragement we need someone to hold our hand , we need some to sit beside us and say nothing, we need some to call us up and make us smile again..... we just need Jesus with skin on !
    I pray for anyone going though a difficult time , God will send physical help, may God use as well to reach out to someone who need to know that the Lord is near ! Lord please make yourself tangible present, sweet Jesus make yourself know so that the believer can know that Our Lord is close! We all desparately need it

    Break Thou the Bread of Life,
    Dear Lord, to me,
    As Thou didst break the loaves
    Beside the sea;
    Beyond the sacred page
    I seek Thee, Lord;
    My spirit pants for Thee,
    O Living Word.
    2
    Thou art the Bread of Life,
    O Lord, to me,
    Thy holy Word the truth
    That saveth me;
    Give me to eat and live
    With Thee above;
    Teach me to love Thy truth,
    For Thou art Love.
    3
    Oh, send Thy Spirit, Lord,
    Now unto me,
    That He may touch my eyes,
    And make me see;
    Show me the truth concealed
    Within Thy Word,
    And in Thy Book revealed
    I see the Lord.
    4
    Bless Thou the truth, dear Lord,
    To me, to me,
    As Thou didst bless the bread
    By Galilee;
    Then shall all bondage cease,
    All fetters fall,
    And I shall find my peace,
    My All in all.

    1 Thy way, O Lord, not mine,
    Thy will be done, not mine;
    Since Thou for me did bleed,
    And now do intercede,
    Each day I simply plead,
    Thy will be done.
    Refrain:
    Thy will, Thy will be done,
    Thy will, Thy will be done;
    Incline my heart each day to say,
    "Thy will be done."
    2 Thy way, O Lord, not mine,
    Let glory all be Thine;
    Keep me, lest I may stray,
    Near Thee from day to day;
    Teach me to watch and pray,
    Thy will be done. [Refrain]
    3 Hide me from self, O Lord,
    May I attend Thy word;
    Send pride beyond recall,
    Let each assailer fall,
    Be Thou my all in all,
    Thy will be done. [Refrain]
    4 Submissively I bow;
    With strength and grace endow
    This weary, sinful heart;
    Shield from each cruel dart;
    May I from Thee ne'er part,
    Thy will be done. [Refrain]

    "NOW FAITH is the assurance (the confirmation, the title deed) of the things [we] hope for, being the proof of things [we] do not see and the conviction of their reality [faith perceiving as real fact what is not revealed to the senses]."
    Trust is Faith in action. Our Faith is our belief system. Trust is that faith working.
    It's been said that Christians have Trust 'muscles'. Like all muscles, in order to stay strong, exercise is needed. All muscles need adversity-exercise; in the gym that's a workout, weight training etc.
    Our 'weights' of Adversity include trouble, weakness, struggles, difficulties, opposition, pressure, chastening, illness, anguish, testing, hardship, sin, multiple failures and often include a 'thorn in the flesh'. These 'weights' are greater than our ability to lift alone and are God's way of getting our attention.
    Psalm‬ ‭34:17‭-‬19‬ ‭AMPC‬‬
    17 When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears, and delivers them out of all their distress and troubles.
    18 The Lord is close to those who are of a broken heart and saves such as are crushed with sorrow for sin and are humbly and thoroughly penitent.
    19 Many evils confront the [consistently] righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.
    As Christians the 'weights' that train us are either God sent or God allowed; they can be physical, relational, mental, emotional or spiritual as in Ephesians 6:12 "our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms."
    As Chris Payton says "Wow God. So, the secret to victorious living is not to try my hardest, but to relinquish all to you."
    Relinquishing is not giving up, it's giving over to God; handing our 'weights' to Him; putting our Faith in action through Trust in Him that He will enable us to live a victorious life through deep dependance on Him.
    John 15:5 "without Me you can do nothing."

  49. JC nails it again! So so good. We do not need to strive for perfection, there is but one perfect one-Jesus the Lord. When we seek perfection of our own accord, we stumble, we fall, we struggle, we rely on unholy ways, we hurt etc. If we open our hearts to Gods will our path IS blessed. We do not need to ask for a blessing of OUR ways/wants. I like that this teaches us to be "successful" on Gods terms not ours. This teaches us to always be dependent on HIM. Relying on God I believe pleases HIM. Dear heavenly Father, give me the strength to have an open heart to your will. Please give me the wisdom to recognize your will in my life. Today and everyday. Amen.
