Jesus Calling: January 3

Refresh yourself in the Peace of My Presence. Peace can be your portion at all times and in all circumstances. Learn to hide in the secret of My presence, even as you carry out your duties in the world. I am both with you and within you. I go before you to open up the way, and I also walk alongside you. There could never be another companion as devoted as I am.
Because I am your constant Companion, there should be a lightness to your step that is observable to others. Do not be weighed down with problems and unresolved issues, for I am your burden-bearer. In the world you have trials and distress, but don't let them get you down. I have conquered the world and deprived it of power to harm you. In Me you may have confident Peace.
Psalm 31:19-20
New American Standard
How great is Your goodness, which You have stored up for those who fear You, which You have wrought for those who take refuge in You, before the sons of men! You hide them in the secret place of Your presence from the conspiracies of man; You keep them secretly in a shelter from the strife of tongues.

John 16:33
Amplified
I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have [perfect] peace and confidence. In the world you have tribulation and trials and distress and frustration; but be of good cheer [take courage; be confident, certain, undaunted]! For I have overcome the world. [I have deprived it of power to harm you and have conquered it for you.]

My Prayer
Lord, this is what I'm searching for in my life right now--to be refreshed. And it's in your presence where that refreshment is truly found. There is peace simply in You. Yet, this is not often my way, but instead I often think peace is found in having a better plan (getting organized or having my to do list filled out). There is nothing wrong with making these plans and getting organized, but they are not the means to me having peace. Peace is found resting in Your presence, taking refuge in You, abiding in You, being with You.

Lord, as I'm busy with so many tasks and responsibilities and roles each day, don't let me think for a moment that I can take care of myself and find peace apart from You. My refuge is found hiding in the secret place of Your presence. My confidence is in You Lord. Shift my focus; shift my ways. Teach me and train me correctly. I do not want to live in deception.

Lord, why do I think that you aren't engaged in my daily tasks? Why do I continually think that these tasks and duties are to be solved by my methods. You are with me. You walk alongside me. Help me to not be defined by my feelings, but instead defined by Your words.

Lord, you are there with me, so what should I fear? Nothing. You are my constant companion. You are there. Not just on the shelf for me to dial into when it is convenient. I can be of good cheer. Lord, I need help in this. I get so down on life. Last night, welling up in me, was this dissatisfaction. I got short with with my two oldest children. I got critical with how they were planning their world, thinking that those plans would not have the right outcome. There is no problem with helping them, but I need to help them in the right way. "But be of good cheer!" Take courage, be confident, certain, undaunted. Lord, I get tired of me and the way I react to things in life. Lord, I hate my impatience. And yet this should remind me how much more I need You for I am a sinner. My kids come home and come to me and I will up with disappointment and dissatisfaction. I let circumstances reign instead of the Peace of Your Presence. Lord, trials will come. But, a trial is not my kids wanting to be with me. When my oldest spoke of his leader from church and getting help from him, I hurt for a moment. I am selfish. I don't just want my kids best, but I want to be the reason they are getting the best. I wanted my son and I to work on things together, not him working with anyone else. Oh Lord, I want to be with my kids. And yet I have trained myself to be this tyrant, this judgmental person, with expectations. I feel disconnected from them. I want to be near them. When they were kids, it seemed easier, and yet, all too often, even at that time, I didn't take advantage of those moments. Now they are gone. Re-train me.

Lord, I want to learn this. I want to learn this peace. Lord, I want to learn that you have overcome the world and so I can be of good cheer. Change my mood Lord. Sure, life is full of trails and frustrations and distresses; they never end. One ends. One gets completed and something new springs up. They don't end. They continue. That is the way it is. But, I can still be of good cheer. Re-train me. I want to learn how to be of good cheer. Lord, I don't want to be weighed down with all these problems. Right now, there is a weight. I'm letting these things take me down. I have many unresolved issues. Show me how to work through them and yet, at the same time, have Your peace; at the same time, be in Your presence; at the same time, be of good cheer. You Lord are my burden-bearer.

Don't let me get down by all these roles and responsibilities and unknowns and tasks and duties. It doesn't mean I am to avoid them. Lord, I need to address them head on. But, through that, help me to remain in Your presence, to be of good cheer, to notice You right beside me, to trust that You have conquered these problems and nothing can harm me.

Lord, my friend is carrying a weight around today. Lord, help him to give it to You. Show him that he doesn't need those secret sins, but he can find peace and comfort and be of good cheer in You and away from those sins. Show him how you have conquered those things.

As my son begins his time of talking to a counselor today, help him to find comfort in this. Provide a good discussion and help him to see the value of yourself in him. Give him peace.

Lord, give us wisdom in these car purchases and borrowing money. Lord, part of me wants to just borrow a lot of money so we have it. And yet Lord, you don't want us to be dependent on others and pay interest. Lord, daily I need to learn how to spend money. And daily I need to surrender this to You.

Lord, if I'm to do this time with You, I need to get to bed sooner. Which means I need to stop thinking that rest is found in watching TV.

    1. I too sometimes let my responsibilities separate me from His saving presence. I must in 2021 give everything to Him right down to the last detail and include Him in every daily task. Everything goes better when He is leading me. Driving back to White Plains now. Will be back later my dear ones. Much love to all! Happy Sunday, Thank You Jesus for a safe trip back and for blessing my sweet Mom and all my family here and in their homes. Strengthen our faith, encourage our hearts and guide our paths in your peace and presence! Amen.

    3. Hi Brie! Thanks for your prayers. I got home fine but had kitchen duty since my son’s family was coming over and staying for dinner right through bath time for my 2 yr old grandson. It was a happy day but very busy. I almost got all my prayers done and I finally got time to get back here to say thank you and God bless you!

    6. Praise the Almighty God and Savior. This reading and prayer spoke the words my heart was yearning and needing to utter to my Savior and Father. I thank u LORD I come to YOU through your precious son YESHUA seeking forgiveness for not always putting You first, for not consistently treating my body as a temple. As a single mother it’s so routine for me to put my children first before myself sometimes to my own detriment, neglecting my health and personal time praising and worshipping U. My children are not to blame, I am, for I know if I am their example and if I’m not well who would care, teach and instill YOUR word and truth’s within them in such a time of darkness in this world. Please help me return to my worship each morning, my private time in the wee hours of the morning where I often am blessed with Your Holy Spirit to guide my steps; You so often through scripture answer my questions and or lead me in a direction I’ve struggled to decide which way to go. You have healed my son when no doctor, hospital or tests would provide answers, You lead me to the information to ask the right questions to finally restore my son’s health after a grueling year of life threatening illnesses it was the medicines of the earth U blessed us with that healed my son. Proving even more that You have given us ALL that we need
(God gives us the use of plants and herbs for curative care, both physical (2 Kings 20:7; Psalm 51:7) and emotional (Psalm 45:8; Genesis 43:11).❤️ reminding us of YOUR warnings of pharmakia You healed me, knew I couldn’t have surgery being a single mother. I wasn’t able to use my arm (rotator cuff damage,-all but one tendon torn, and calcification that covered 1/4 of my back(by shoulder ) I fell and needed a hip replacement couldn’t walk without a walker for nearly 6 months following being bed ridden for almost 2 months. And when I came to U our Great Physician YOU led me to remedies from the earth, the calcification shrunk in half , my range of motion returned (i was not able to raise my arm nor use if for much of anything for a year +) and the doctor said “I’ve never seen this before your range of motion is better than it was prior to you last two tendon detachments u & the reduction in calcification in your back by almost half I cannot explain, I’ve never seen this happen without surgery”
ALL GLORY TO GOD!! “I don’t know what you’re doing but it’s working “ doc said
I said Prayer and used remedies of old our Heavenly Father blessed us with
I do not take credit for it is/was YOU lord that helped me become mobile again, I was able to reduce my dependence on outside help and through Your strength given to me I was able once again to do these tasks myself because of YOU LORD 🙏
I’ve never loved anyone or anything more than You, I think, please don’t let me fool myself and put anyone or thing before You.
Please bless mankind and open their eyes to the evils masquerading as good. Please Dear God discipline me when/if I’m not on the straight and narrow path, please help me to fight self delusions of grandeur, for any light , beauty, and good works I do is through and for YOU and the rest of my brothers and sisters in the world. Please forgive me of my sins and help reveal any hidden sins so I may be washed clean.
      May God bless you all

  6. If your prayer was written in 2013, I am sure that The Lord has done many works in your life since then. The transparency in your prayer is indicative of someone who truly wants to be more Christlike. O, that we could all be this truthful with ourselves! You went a step further, you PUBLISHED the truth about your experiences.

May God's peace reign strong in your life and within your family. Thank you for the time you have invested in these posts!

My wife and I (and many more) are still praying for my youngest, who turns 18 next month, to trust in His Maker. Right now, he's believing the lies, but no matter what we will still trust God. I'm amazed to see how God is using my simple recording of these words to impact people. The Lord is great - our Rock, our fortress, our help in every time. Be blessed. - Chris

  9. Thank you, Father, for the last two nights of sweet sleep that I have received. I am thankful, this 3rd day of 2020, for your constant communication as I turn my ear toward You and soak up Your continual encouragement.
"Because I am your constant Companion, there should be a lightness to your step that is observable to others. Do not be weighed down with problems and unresolved issues, for I am your burden-bearer." Let my step be light, Lord. Let my words be salted and let Your love shine in my eyes as I greet people and help them with their many burdens.
It was good for me to be away from work for almost 2 weeks. I needed the break. I pray that I am able to maintain the peace I felt yesterday upon returning. There is so much to do and many aching people. Let me be their gentle reminder of Your love, God, and how Christ Jesus has gone before us in every situation.
Loved reading BYMB, MadFox. Through the night if I woke up, I would tell myself to 'Bring Your Mind Back,' to His Mercy and Grace. And Suzanne R: my sister taught me FROG and even gave me a little ceramic one that sits on my window ledge, reminding me to Fully Rely On God. Such simple things to keep our minds on Him.
And today, Maplewood, I say, TGIF - because I am thankful that, Thank God I am Forgiven! You taught us that one a while back.
Please know whether I post or not, I am reading and your prayers are mine. Lifting all of my JC Family: your hearts desires (Sassy Mom), your victories (Dave D - Congratulations!!), and prayer requests.
Peyton Family, I thank God daily for your devotions and your family. Would love to hear how your youngest is progressing. All of our adult children are in our prayers daily - some turn to the One True God; others still try to find their way. I pray for patience and guidance and to be an example to them.
God's Best to all of you!

  12. This blog is greatly blessed. Thanks, Chris, for your faithfulness to God's call to do this for so many people, the ones who comment above and the many (who knows how many) that stop by and read. Anyone who reads and/or shares feels the loving touch of the Spirit. I John 2:29-3:6 tells us we are the children of God. In yesterday's blog, it was discussed that we are called to enter into a time with the Lord to be reminded who we are and more importantly, whose we are. As we allow this identification to mold our heart, soul, mind, and actions, God reveals Himself to the world. More simply put, when love is the driving force of who we are, the world experiences God. Above, people shared little ways they keep their mind and more importantly, heart stayed on our Lord. Thank you for sharing. Whatever is helpful, do so. The goal is to stay in love mode so God is revealed. Prayer is essential in this process for it molds the heart in love. God be with you.

  16. Thank you, Chris, for putting this JC blog out there for all of us! Thank you also for sharing your heart in 2013 and the update. I will continue to keep your youngest son in my prayers.

I was given the Jesus Calling book several years ago from an acquaintance/friend who could see I was hurting. I read passages off an on for a few years, but not consistently. When circumstances became bad enough that I left my home and stayed with friends, I began reading each evening until I fell asleep to get me through the day/night. I began feeling like each entry was written for me. The more I read and connected, the more I yearned to read. I began using my phone and searching for the bible passages online to go along with the readings, and I found this blog. Thank you, Lord, for putting this blessing in my path! It has been a daily tremendous help to me.

I will continue to pray for specific daily requests for each person that asks. I will also pray for this JC Family as a whole; for those that post and for those that remain in the background. Thank you to all who have said prayers for me; my heart is truly touched.

Jesus, I am not sure of my future path, but I know I accept having You by my side and on my side. Thank You for everything! With the book and this blog, I am continually reminded that I need to fully surrender to You. I am working on that every day, and will continue to say "yes" to You, My God. Blessing to all! CO

  18. Morning glory and honor to the PRINCE of Peace!
Father, It's a joy and a blessing to be in Your Presence this first Sunday. As Your Saints gather together this morning to worship You with praise and thanksgiving for a new beginning, may all who hear the Word be empowed with Holy Ghost fire to properly use their divine authority and claim their rightful position as Your children. Clothe us with new garments of power for our new status and brighten our pathways with Your Word.
Let us be reminded to find courage, strength and hope in You and Your Word, never forgetting that You are the One who holds all comfort and security firmly in Your grasp. Teach us to be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let our requests be made known to You, so that Your peace which surpasses all our understanding, can guard our hearts and minds through Christ Jesus (Phil. 4:6-7). Amen.

When we accept God's timetable and the limitations He places on any given situation, it helps to dispel our anxieties. Life is a gift from the hand of God, so whatever life situation we are faced with, we can find answers in a close abiding relationship with Christ Jesus. And when we do this, we too can sing Helen Lemmel's song: "Turn your eyes upon Jesus."
We can look full into His glorious face, where we will find 'mercy and grace, forgiveness and hope, peace and eternal security.'
God's Peace is unshakable and His Presence is sure, thereby making both immovable, when we keep our focus on Him!

"Peace with God is the Fruit of Oneness with God."

I am in prayer with our JC prayer warriors, for all that have requested, including the unspoken ones that the Father already knows.

Stay in His Peace today and remain Blessed.

  19. I once again am thinking of my Yaya who would always say, "let me talk to my good friend, God" as if he were her BFF...Little did I know as a child that He was her BFF and how she walked and talked with Him throughout her days. I strive to be like her always leaning on and trusting in Him. When I talk with God constantly about every situation, my day goes so much smoother and more peaceful vs keeping Him on a shelf like a spice and thinking I can handle this or that. I picture God just waiting there waiting, with His arms crossed wondering when I'm going to reach out to Him. A hope of mine for 2021 is keeping Him alongside me each day and conferring with Him never thinking I'm bothering with miniscule things...and realizing He wants to be asked about everything!

On another note, it is my son and oldest child, Nick's, 31st birthday today! What a joy-filled day it was 31 years ago...and the immense, overwhelming love I felt for this baby when he was born. I never could have imagined it until it happened. I need to remind myself that this must be the love God has for us. Humbling.

Happy Sunday one and all JC family! Have a blessed week as we lean on and come to God with all things!

My Constant Companion is healing me as I type. I soak up the joy, praise and daily blessings that each of you post and I am thankful. Loved your sharing about 31 years ago when Nick was born, NJS. It's amazing how quickly time flies, yet we can remember that joy and perfect sense of 'all being right with the world,' when remember the birth of one of our children.
Praying for all of you and thanking God for our lives and hearts hidden in Him. Still claiming that Peace and Good Cheer, Chris, which reminds me again how thankful I am for this blog.

  35. Praying for you BL for the perfect outcome to your physical challenges. God s got this, and you, and as I read your post, I believe you know this. As we care for Paul, who has breathing issues and heart problems I ask also for prayer. There is no doubt in this house of the love and Peace God provides. In the practical matters of what to say, what thoughts and dreams Paul is expressing to encourage and how to respond is where I need prayer. He is strong in his insistence to do certain things before he dies. Things I observe would be physically impossible. The book "Final Gifts" is a helpful resource, but I am such a good little co-dependant that I want to follow through on every request. I give it all up to you Lord, everyone and everything to you. Help me to know how. In Jesus'name I pray.

Praying for you dear Jeanne, as you travel home (maybe already there?). I know what a blessing you are to your family!
As for me - my house is UNdecorated (thank you, God) and I am ever-so-thankful, to my youngest son, Chuck for helping me put my house back together. Two weeks of Littles, every night - tonight I go to bed a very thankful woman. It's quiet. Blessed to tell you that my friend's (Chris, who passed away) granddaughter was born today - healthy baby girl with a middle name the same as hers. God my heart just wrenches for my two friends who passed away this last week - more for their families than them. I know they are at Peace, awaiting the Return of Christ. But their loved ones: spouses, children, grands - I pray for their comfort and peace. And I go to bed, counting my blessings. But for the grace of God, go I....bittersweet 2 weeks....please, God - let tomorrow feel a little more 'normal,' whatever that is, right?
Praying or all of you, my dear JC Family!

  41. Sarah writes through JC: "In the world you have trials and distress, but don't let them get you down. I have conquered the world and deprived it of power to harm you. In Me you may have confident Peace." In this coming year, my goal will be to consistently embrace GRATITUDE. To be grateful for each blessing I have.

And as we read here, when we have trials and distress, He says our second goal should be to PERSEVERE, because with Him we can be confident of His peace enveloping us. The burden is light with Him! So, the goals in 2023: 1. Gratitude. 2. Perseverance I pray for all here to embrace His gift of PEACE regardless of your circumstances, He promises to provide it. Amen.

And to get there sometimes requires perseverance and looking at those around you who are less fortunate. Peace then only arrives through faith, and that is always challenging in today's fallen world. May His mercy with His invisible hand holding yours, get you through your day, week, month, or year. Amen.

They lifted my weary heart and added much light to my day. The Word of God is like a soothing balm that restores us to good health of body, mind and spirit. And we who love the Lord know and understand His benefits! We are so blessed to belong to the true I Am.

      Psalm 103:1-5
      Bless the Lord, O my soul;
And all that is within me, bless His holy name!
Bless the Lord, O my soul,

      Who forgives all your iniquities,
      Who heals all your diseases,
Who redeems your life from destruction,
Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies,
Who satisfies your mouth with good things,
So that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

  58. Today's Devotion reminds us to Refresh in The Peace of His Presence...
    ICYMI:
    TIME...
Time is the coin of our life.
It is the only coin we have to spend.
Only we can determine how our life coin is spent.
Being careful with our time coin, means we
Do NOT let others spend it for us. Instead, we spend it for ourselves when we:
Spend time working; work is the price of success.
Spend time thinking; thoughts are a source of power.
Spend time playing; playing is a secret of youth.
Spend time reading; reading is a road to discovery.
Spend time praying; praying is a key to eternity.
Spend time being friendly; friendliness is a road to happiness.
Spend time dreaming; dreams are a highway to stars.
Spend time loving and being loved; love is a way to show The True Nature of God.
    Spend time in refreshing worship in place of depressing worry;
    Yesterday is a cancelled check.
    Tomorrow is a promissory note.
    Today is cash in hand!
SOMEBODY might ask what I did with the cash gift He gave me today! Will my answer cause Him to say, Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your Master?
I pray it is so. In Jesus' Name. AMEN!

Your post reminded me of how much I enjoyed watching our grandchildren play together during Christmas, thinking that our Father also must enjoy watching us take time to relax and play, enjoying Him and all that He has provided. Take your TIME to digest it all. It dissolves slowly, but in TIME it will.
Little kids seem to be able to accomplish all in the same day.
Since I'm a big kid now, I may try one each month?
Yes, whenever we see our grands working, thinking, playing, reading, praying, friendly, dreaming, loving, worshipping, it makes our heart happy and our mind think all is right in the world. Could God feel that way when we do? Perhaps. Idaho, Alaskim!

3 He refreshes and restores my life (my self); He leads me in the paths of righteousness [uprightness and right standing with Him—not for my earning it, but] for His name’s sake.
4 Yes, though I walk through the [deep, sunless] valley of the shadow of death, I will fear or dread no evil, for You are with me; Your rod [to protect] and Your staff [to guide], they comfort me.
5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my [brimming] cup runs over.
6 Surely or only goodness, mercy, and unfailing love shall follow me all the days of my life, and through the length of my days the house of the Lord [and His presence] shall be my dwelling place."
I've often thought on verse 5 "You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies." In context with today's Jesus Calling "Refresh yourself in the Peace of My Presence. Peace can be your portion at all times and in all circumstances." and quoted scriptures Psalm 31:19-20 and John 16:33 it
    makes sense.
The background of Psalm 23 is David, inspite of enemies out to kill him, experiencing God's Peace in all that is described in the Psalm.
" In the presence of my enemies". Who or what are these enemies? Essentially anything or anyone that comes against us, usually consisting of 'The world, the flesh, and the devil'; in circumstances, situations, people's hostile attitude against us, problems and unresolved issues.
In all of this negativity we may experience Jesus reassures us we can have His Peace. He is the Peace giver, He Is the Prince of Peace, with us and within us.
I need His Peace, we all do. My prayer is that He will help us be a channel of His Peace bringing His Peace to those in desperate need of it.

    1. Wonderful insight on what Psalm 23. Thanks dear Peter! I believe our enemies are anyone or anything that threatens to separate us from the love and favor of God.

  67. Agreed. Our children belong to themselves and to God. We have the sacred and solemn task of shepherding along the way. Two scriptures I regret not knowing sooner.

    1. "Fathers, do not provoke (exasperate) your children to anger"

"Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” Fathers, do not provoke (exasperate) your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord." Ephesians 6:4

    2. "Fathers, do not provoke (exasperate) your children, lest they become discouraged". Colossians 3:21

But I know them now. And while the children are young adults, they are still our children, and I am their father. I can seek amends and parent differently. I get a do over just as God gives us a do over everyday through His precious Son Jesus Christ.

God's Blessings for all this day.

Cramming on John 16 right now:
I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have [perfect] peace and confidence. In the world you have tribulation and trials and distress and frustration; but be of good cheer [take courage; be confident, certain, undaunted]! For I have overcome the world. [I have deprived it of power to harm you and have conquered it for you.] Thank You, Jesus! AME !

  69. My struggle is with knowing He never leaves me but I leave Him! Loneliness. Grief so deep it makes an imprint on my soul for the day. This reading is a lovely challenge to take a moment and be loved, feel God’s COMPASSION!!! The secret place. Today I ponder how I have run to others to help me. It feels like such a long road to grow in God’s grace! It takes stillness and faith to endure. Sometimes it feels like I’m trying to lift a weight that is too heavy for me to lift repetitiously. 💔 so, I fail. But I WON’T STOP running into His arms and seeking Him!!! Someone told me THAT is God. HIM drawing me near. What a WONDERFUL THOUGHT!!!! Faith!!! Love… God give us strength to presere.

    1. Yes Anonymous, Lifting weight is too heavy for you and for all of us who lift repetitiously. I wonder if that is why one of our Savior Jesus' most comforting promises is found in Matthew 11:28–30: “Come unto Me, all ye that labour and are heavily laden with burdens, and I will give you rest. “Take My Yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I Am Meek and I Am Humble in heart: and ye SHALL find rest unto your souls. “For My Yoke is Easy, and My Burden is Light.”
He is inviting us to unite with Him. He will share our burden and make it easy. It would be neither heavy, galling, irritating nor humiliating.
🤔 . But It means giving Jesus control and letting Him direct our efforts. This is a do over I have failed thousands of times, yet I stay in the E for effort and the T for try, class, hoping to one day get it right
Holy Spirit, would You please help me to RSVP to Your Invitation to Let go and Let God? Thank You.

    2. Dear Anonymous and Brie, So much truth in both of your posts and Brie I love those verses and sing those words in Choir. God really wants us to come to Him and drop those heavy burdens at His feet! He is mighty and strong when we feel overwhelmed and weak. I must admit this change for me has been difficult because I miss all the people who brought me joy. I know I’m making my mom happy but my days feel a bit gray but for Jesus. I call to Him and run into His arms so often during my days. Because only He knows how I feel. Such a well of comfort and unchanging love.
