Jesus Calling: January 6

I am able to do far beyond all that you ask or imagine. Come to Me with positive expectations, knowing that there is no limit to what I can accomplish. Ask My Spirit to control your mind, so that you can think great thoughts of Me. Do not be discouraged by the fact that many of your prayers are yet unanswered. Time is a trainer, teaching you to wait upon Me, to trust Me in the dark. The more extreme your circumstances, the more likely you are to see My Power and Glory at work in the situation. Instead of letting difficulties draw you into worrying, try to view them as setting the scene for My glorious intervention. Keep your eyes and your mind wide open to all that I am doing in your life.
Ephesians 3:20-21
English Standard Version
Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

Romans 8:6
English Standard Version
For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.

30
Isaiah 40:30-31
New King James Version
Even the youths shall faint and be weary,
And the young men shall utterly fall,
But those who wait on the Lord
Shall renew their strength;
They shall mount up with wings like eagles,
They shall run and not be weary,
They shall walk and not faint.

Revelation 5:13
English Standard Version
And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying, "To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!”

My Prayer (1/6/13)
Lord, here I am; still wanting to depend on you; still wanting to walk in Your presence; still desiring to have peace and trust in You for everything. And You are still there reminding me that you can do far beyond all that I could ask or imagine. Once again, I'm working to surrender to You this car situation. It has come down whether to agreeing to buy it and yet my wife woke up in the middle of the night (1) smelling fireplace smoke coming out of the vent and (2) also wondering why the car didn't go up a very small hill very well. So, I'm thinking about just asking him to have my mechanic check it out. I just have to be careful.

Lord, whatever you want to do with this defending your faith class at church, I'm good. If it is to have a couple of people, no people, or a big crowd, I'm good. My time has lots to fill it and I'm good at whatever you provide. I'd love to see people desiring to be laborers of your harvest. And I continue to pray you would raise up individuals and burden them with a desire to preach Your word and be more fired up than me. I am anxious to learn through this course as well. And yet, even I, am nervous about the material and what it asks of me.

Lord, I ask Your Spirit to control my mind. I ask that my thoughts would be held captive to only thinking of things that honor you. Lord, I lift up my friend K and pray that you would discipline him. Discipline my oldest son. Train them both to do things each day that need to be done. And help them to make wise decisions. And to have peace each day as they lay their head down to rest on their pillow.

Lord, I lift up the leaders of my church and their staff. I pray for each one and any other elders you have of this body. Lord, for each one, I pray they are earnestly desiring and seeking to know You more. I pray they would surrender themselves to You daily and spend time praying and reading Your word. Deepen them and challenge them to be ambassadors for Your name. Move them to be laborers for the harvest. I pray for their marriages, that they would honor You, And I pray that they would be an encouragement to people in their life, in and outside of the Body. Draw them closer to You and give them peace and contentment. Help them to trust You each day and maintain joy and gratitude. Lord, give them sound wisdom. And train the body and us in what elders are and meant to be in the Body. And help the Body of Christ to submit to their leadership 100%. Lord, I pray that agreement to their decisions is not the catalyst that moves people to submission, but Lord, You would teach the body that in surrendering to them we are surrendering to You, Lord.

I pray for the deacon leaders, guide them in their service and strengthen them daily as they continue to work outside the home. Give them quality time with You and with their obligations and guidance as they look to you for direction on the work of deacons in our body.

Note: The devotion and scriptures are from author Sarah Young and you can find the book at many online and local stores.

  4. Dear God, please be with my son and husband as they travel. You know my son has OCD and anxiety and that this trip has been difficult. Please grant my husband the wisdom necessary to handle the many bumps they’ve had so far during the father son trip. Please keep them safe and in your arms and get them home safely. Please grant me the wisdom to give my worries to You and know that You are in control and that there is nothing I can do but pray.

  7. Good Morning JC Family!

As I read this morning's devotion, these words jumped out and spoke to MY current situation: Do not be discouraged by the fact that many of your prayers are yet unanswered. Time is a trainer, teaching you to wait upon Me, to trust Me in the dark. The more extreme your circumstances, the more likely you are to see My Power and Glory at work in the situation. It is so AMAZING how GOD allows us to receive EXACTLY what we need at the right time! It is CONFIRMATION for me and I am excited about this day, and watching and waiting to see how GOD is going to handle everything. I have noticed in the past 24 hours even though the circumstance we are praying about has not changed my perspective has and I am really in TRUST GOD mode and for that I am grateful! Thanks to each of your for your continued prayers because I feel the power working within me! I too will continue to agree with you on your prayer request as well! May this day prove blessed productive and joyful as GOD would have it, since it is another day HE has made and we have great cause to REJOICE IN IT!

    2. You have experienced a profound truth about prayer, God’s Daughter. We are called to pray not so much to change outward circumstances as to change our heart, to reorientate our being with God. In so doing we see God’s will unfolding before us. God be with you,

    3. Amen!! Yes Lord, CHANGE OUR HEART ♥.

    4. Yes! God's daughter. We often ask God to bless our plans rather than get behind God's plan with an open heart! Then, we can realize the plan is already blessed!

    5. Awesome prayer God’s Daughter! Even if our difficult circumstances aren’t changing, God’s spirit is hard at work inside us so our responses are different. Instead of worry and fear, with God’s help, we can respond to bad situations with Hope, Peace, Strength and Patience.

    6. We are blessed even when the trials come. We are more than conquerors in Christ Jesus no matter what the circumstances. Whenever a problem or challenge arises, the Lord is at our side and mighty to save.

      Delete
    7. I love this take on prayer..."get behind God's plan with an open heart". We need not be needy about the outcome, only the realization that we need Him. Humble yourself before the Lord in gratitude for HIS plan and timing, not ours.

    4. Good song Janet, We are all broken despite our cheerful personas, But like Paul, I rejoice in my brokenness because the Lord is my portion and He is close to me especially when I am in the valleys.
I had such a blessed day yesterday. After praying in the morning and getting my grandson’s package done, I was moping around and I told Jesus I was having a hard day. Then started doing my chores. Along the way I had let go of His hand and I was sitting in a bit of a pity pool for a while. The night before I was leading my Bible group in the bedroom and I was having a cup of tea in this cutie cup my Bible group gave me for Christmas last year. It was in the shape of a happy lady’s face and every time I used it it made me feel loved. Anyway the internet was weak in my bedroom so I switched places with Rick and finished in the living room. After our closing prayer I got up and my husband said: Oh I broke your cup. He had gone into the bedroom and accidently banged into my table and the cup dropped and broke. I told him I loved that cup. He said he knew I was gonna say that. He said it’s just a thing and we have other cups. I was upset and I told Jesus that only He knew exactly how I felt. Part of it was just because I didn’t think my husband understood me and how much that sweet cup meant to me. I finally forgave him because Jesus forgives us.
Anyway back to yesterday. I was feeling down but I had given it to the Lord so I got up and started making a nice pot of white bean and vegetable soup. Also started to bake cookies to bring to Rick’s brother and his wife tomorrow. My dear sister in law has Alzheimer’s and they are going through very hard times. Anyway,Rick had gone out for his walk. When I heard him come back in he said he had something for me. He walked into the kitchen with a big beautiful bouquet of flowers. I said thank you but why did you get them? He answered because I deserve them for being such a good person. I was so surprised and so blessed because earlier I had been grumbling a lot before he left and he knew I needed a lift. So I gave him a hug and a kiss for understanding me more than I realized. He’s a keeper.
God is so good and right on time.

  22. Loving Father, Thank You for spiritual laws that are largely unseen, but whose effects are equally as evident. This morning, I thank You for the grace to Ask in expectancy because the law of expectation means that I get what I expect. Because I expect Your favor, I know I’ll receive it. Because I expect a breakthrough, I know I will eventually experience a breakthrough. I wait for my prayers to be answered in expectancy because I will get them answered by You. Thank You Lord for giving me what I expect at Your perfect timing, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

We live in a universe in which expectations rule because Jesus created and understood the laws of moral universe. “As you believe, so shall it be done for you.” So many times in scripture, we hear Jesus ask, “What do you want me to do for you.” Those who responded, did so in expectancy. They expected to get what they asked for (healing, sight, etc..). We can do likewise and say to the Father: I Ask Expectantly, I Seek Expectantly, I Knock Expectantly and I Receive What I Expect. Christ came to light the fire of Hope in our hearts and fill our minds and hearts with positive expectations. So when we get in agreement with our Lord, positive things happen for us. Let us therefore put on our positive cap and toss the negative out, trusting the God of all possibilities! For behold, the old life passes away and all things become new.

  24. Good morning dear JC family.
What a privilege it is to share these pages and hearts with you all! You are a wonder! You were created on purpose with a purpose for God‘s purpose! And part of that is your encouragement and challenge and faith represented here. Thank you so much for the parts of your hearts you share with all of us. Thank you so much for your prayer requests and for answers to prayer! We see God in and through you. You are not here by chance. I praise God for that and for all of you!

Like God’s daughter above (^^Way above) these words completely caught my attention:

“Do not be discouraged by the fact that many of your prayers are yet unanswered. Time is a trainer, teaching you to wait upon Me, to trust Me in the dark. The more extreme your circumstances, the more likely you are to see My Power and Glory at work in the situation.”

I think of those unanswered prayers in so many areas. Yet, I SEE God working and moving and shifting and transforming in my children, in my husband’s ex-wife, in my parents, EVEN in our nation and God’s bride. He is trustworthy. Everyone of us can testify (and we know as Revelation and M NJ often reminds us, the power of testimony and Jesus overcome the enemy).

Thank you all for your position in defeating the enemy. We need that to continue. As Hebrews hails us, we are spurring one another on toward love and good deeds. May we “win” our neighbors even as our testimonies defeat the enemy. Praise God for such a strategy.

Anyway, I find myself in a strange situation today. I am in the hospital awaiting surgery. It’s unexpected but I am so grateful for the opportunity to have my health be attended to. For months this year I have had some reoccurring pains that have made me wonder what is going on. A couple days ago JC was so much about trusting God and trusting Jesus and repeating his name. And that was difficult for me when I was in pain wondering what to do about my situation. So finally yesterday after a horrible night overnight, I woke my husband in the early hours to say, we need to go in. God bless him, he is not the morning person in our pairing. But we were here early at the ER yesterday morning before crowds. And God Presented himself in every person that has cared for me here at this hospital.
I wish I could tell you the individual stories of how God weaves his tapestry through the inspiration and encouragement of everyone here. I am humbled and so grateful to see answers to some nagging health concerns.

My liver and pancreas are the issues. But the doctor discerned a stone in my bile duct which last night’s MRI confirmed. I sacrificed my gall bladder a few years ago which is the “normal” depository for stones of course. But in light of pancreatitis (I am a once a month drinker -typically you would see pancreatitis in a heavy drinker) or something worse being the other diagnosis, removing this stone is such a blessed outcome.

Mine is not much compared to other health journeys described by JC warriors here. But, it matters to me and to our Papa, as ALL of our concerns do. So as Suzanne reminds us to stay connected to the vine, and as our JC warrior family grows, please be encouraged that all your praises and concerns are valued as we serve God together. Please know your prayers are ours as our young at heart Sassy Mom reminds us so often.

Thank you again dear JC family. You shine. And your light will not be hidden. Praise God.

  25. Oh and JE - I join yesterday’s prayers for your Mom and today’s. I have 91 year old parents who live way across the country. My two oldest sisters are additional caregivers and it is tough for them all. My parents live independently- mostly. But things dwindle a bit, for my Mom especially, nearly daily.
I am so glad your Mom has YOU caring for her journey. It is tough but I know God leads you in HIS timing. Thank you for letting us walk with you.

  26. Prayer Warriors, I'm asking prayers for my widow neighbor Miss Pat who is being cared for by her daughter who quit her nursing home job to care for her mother, (also 2 adult grandsons who both work in medical). She has been suffering with unbearable pain since before Christmas Eve. She just now called, crying with unbearable pain. Nothing her PC Dr. has done has helped. PC Dr referred her to a surgeon who can't see her until January 14. I prayed immediately for Pat. I called Pastor Greg to ask for immediate prayer for this precious soul. Pat is in her early 70's. Thank you for praying.

  34. Epiphany

May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face to shine upon us, that your way may be known upon earth, your saving power among all nations. Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you.  (Psalm 67:1-3 (NRSV))

In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, ‘Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews?  (Matthew 2:1-2a (NRSV))

And Jesus came and said to them [the disciples], ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’  Matthew 28:19-20 (NRSV))

So how were your 12 days of Christmas?  When I have tried to keep the spirit up, it has a tendency to fizzle after the New Year.  But I try not to lose sight of Epiphany.  Many churches celebrated Epiphany last Sunday.  The date isn’t as important as the significance.  The celebration of Epiphany is an essential part of the story.  Epiphany is the purpose of the story that started back with Advent.  It is the reason for which He was born.  Throughout the Old Testament, the LORD was pouring out His love upon Israel so that the rest of the world may see and come to believe that the God of Israel is the one and only God as suggested in Psalm 67 above.  Now, in Jesus, the LORD’s love will be poured out on everyone so that none should perish but all be saved to the glory of God.  The coming of the magi signifies that God’s love is now going beyond the boundaries of Israel, in fact, the love will now have no boundaries.  Isaiah prophesied about Jerusalem, God’s capital city, (25:26) On this mountain the LORD of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food…  I have highlighted in red the words, all nations and all peoples.  How all is all?  Epiphany is the celebration that all people are invited to the eternal party, no exceptions.  As we reenter normality after a wonderful season of celebration, we have a mission, to let the love of God be felt in all our interactions and as the Spirit leads, to share the good news of the LORD’s love.  Though this time on the church calendar when there is no particular event of focus is known as ordinary time, to live the gospel is anything but ordinary.  To reflect God’s love to all is the most extraordinary way to live.

The iconic song for Epiphany is We Three Kings of Orient Are.  Written by John Henry Hopkins Jr, an unmarried ordained priest in the Episcopal Church,  who wrote it for his nephews and nieces as his gift to them at Epiphany.  (In former times, Epiphany was the day of gift giving more so than Christmas and still is today in some cultures.)  His small gift to them has become a gift to all Christendom.  Though historically inaccurate, the point is spot on.  Hopkins brings out the fullness of who Jesus is through verses 2-4 in the gifts that are offered.  Jesus is the eternal King signified in the gold, He is truly God seen in the frankincense which is offered to deities (the first two fulfill Isaiah 60:6b), but most importantly, the myrrh (a spice used in the process of burial in those days) which points to the role of His death which is a essential part of who He is. The last verse brings everything together in celebration of Jesus.  The refrain repeated throughout the song is a prayer for you and me and everyone, guide us to thy perfect light.  Like the magi, every person seeks within the depths of their being direction for life.  As you and I make our way toward our LORD, let us share the love with others who are still searching for the Way.  Let us show everyone (no exceptions) the love of God within us so they may join us on the journey to the eternal celebration.

  40. Such good food today. Trusting Him in the wilderness because His light can light even the tiny recesses of the road ahead. Trusting Him in the dark and holding His Hand.
    Ephesians 3:20-21
Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
Our loving Father knows what we need even before we ask Him so I am laying every burden at His feet and I know that all will be well in His Hands.
    Isaiah 40:30-31
Even the youths shall faint and be weary,
And the young men shall utterly fall,
But those who wait on the Lord
    Shall renew their strength;
They shall mount up with wings like eagles,
They shall run and not be weary,
They shall walk and not faint.

Waiting on the Lord and staying safe and peaceful in His sweet presence. With Him by my side, I'm strong and equipped for anything. I am more than a conqueror in Him. Hallelujah!

    Malachi 4:2
But to you who fear My name
The Sun of Righteousness shall arise
    With healing in His wings;
    And you shall go out

Ephesians 3:20a " Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think"
All Glory to God, a testimony of his provision and goodness which has been a serious matter of prayer for us for months now: A disabled family member with 2 children was due to be homeless from today. Local authorities seemed apathetic at best although they knew a month ago of the desperate need.
But, our loving Heavenly Father came through yesterday. An early morning phone call confirmed emergency accommodation had been found, suitable too for their 'assist dog'. A ground floor apartment with a small grassed yard, suitable to sleep 3 people had been allocated. It is emergency accommodation, so once permanent accommodation is found they will have to move again, but God IS in control.
Our hearts are overflowing with thanks to our great God for His loving care and tender mercies.
It's worth repeating: "I am able to do far beyond all that you ask or imagine. Come to Me with positive expectations, knowing that there is no limit to what I can accomplish."

  49. I am able to do far beyond all that you ask or imagine."
    Long story shortened:
I had been praying earnestly for a young engineer, part of the team I led in an Islamic country. I had the sense he was seeking; His questions on Christianity went deeper than most.
Many of this team inquired about my Christian faith as I was obviously not from the region and our (my wife and I) grasp of the language was rudimentary at best. These conversations exclusively were on a one to one basis; I did not approach them, they sought me out for quiet conversations.
One day 'M' informed me he was flying 500 miles home to his family for the Eid al-Fitr celebration (end of Ramadan). He was on our hearts constantly during that week.
On his return 'M' sought me out and said "I cannot believe what I have to tell you. Arriving home, I found a Christian Bible in my language on my parents coffee table. I asked them how they got it, they said a neighbor found it and brought it to them, not knowing what to do with it. My parents have started reading it. What should I do?" I gave instructions on how to find the words of Prophet Eisaa (Jesus) suggesting he and they read His words.
WOW! Didn't expect God to work like that!
    NEVER STOP PRAYING.
Expect to see my brother 'M' in Glory some time.

So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.
