Jesus Calling: January 9

I am with you and for you. When you decide on a course of action that is in line with My will, nothing in heaven or on earth can stop you. You may encounter many obstacles as you move toward your goal, but don't be discouraged--never give up! With My help, you can overcome any obstacle. Do not expect an easy path as you journey hand in hand with Me, but remember that I, your very-present Helper, am omnipotent.
     Much, much stress results from your wanting to make things happen before their times have come. One of the main ways I assert My sovereignty is in the timing of events. If you want to stay close to Me and do things My way, ask Me to show you the path forward moment by moment. Instead of dashing headlong toward your goal, let Me set the pace. Slow down, and enjoy the journey in My presence.
Romans 8:31
English Standard Version

 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

Psalm 46:1-3
New King James Version
46  God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, even though the earth be removed,
And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;
Though its waters roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with its swelling. Selah (It is well)

Luke 1:37
English Standard Version
For nothing will be impossible with God.

My Prayer
Lord, thank you for being with me and thank you for being my biggest advocate. I want to lean on You and I want you to draw my kids and wife to You so that they will lean on You, so that they will trust in You. Lord, two things are hitting hard. One, my daughter Megan and her defensiveness over thinking at any time that we, as parents, may be thinking ill of her. She gets so defensive so quick and wants to be so clear that she doesn't ever do anything wrong or do anything that would make us think that she has done anything wrong. It's a character that I don't even think she knows that she is doing. Lord, I'm also having trouble working. I'm not getting my work done on the job. I'm not working hard. I've been distracted at work. I have other burdens, but I can't let my work slide, though right now, it is. I need your help. I'm weak. I need your strength.

Lord, I want to be about your will. I want to do this evangelism class because I want to be in Your will and be obedient to Your commands and help people, encourage people, to share their faith with others. Lord, help me to make choices in life that are in line with Your will. Not my will be done, but Yours. Guide me and direct me to those things that are Your will for me.

Lord, it is amazing the easy path I expect. Lord, I want to be ready for obstacles and difficulties. I'm kind of expecting a low turn out tonight or no one. Help me not to change my commitment based on response, but to continue to be there and be faithful. If no one is there, I can spend the time praying. Lord, I just want to do Your will and do things with the right motive. Change my heart O God.

Lord, I want to walk in Your presence. I want to be about your ways. Lord, I thank you for Warren and his words of encouragement to me. He said to me, "You need to do something with your passion for Christ.  I am serious. I know that you have obligations, etc, but 2013 should be about seeking out the next step for Chris Payton.  Your passion, belief, and understanding makes it a perfect fit. I don't know what that looks like, but I am convinced that this is the direction that you need to move in.  You are most alive when you talk about Christ and your love for him, and you need to act on it!  GO CHRIS!!"

"I am most alive when I talk about Christ." Those are wise words and I appreciate them. And those are visionary words that no one has spoken to me about. No one has encouraged me like this. What is the next step for Me Lord? Where would you want to take me on my journey with you in Your presence? Do you have a different route for Me than what I am accustomed to? Do you have a different road? Lord, I need you. You are--for me--Lord. You are for me. You are for us.

Lord, I keep praying and lifting up the leaders at church. Lord, I pray these men and women, the elders would be men of integrity and character. Lord, help them not to be haughty or self-righteous or bitter or infer disunity in the Body, but to be blameless and above reproach in all things. Lord, keep them moral, ethical, financially strong. Lord, I pray they aren't hiding sin from You, but keeping it front and center. Give them each accountability partners in their life.

Lord, for the staff, direct them in Your ways. Give them confidence continually in You. Change their hearts Lord and align them with You. Help them to be men and women of integrity. Lord, keep them and their staff above reproach and don't ever let them be complacent in their service. Draw them closer and give them recognition continually of their sin and where they are falling from your grace. Right their wrongs and make them authenticate.

Lord, I pray for volunteers. Deepen them and align their thinking. Give them a vision. Help them to be men of integrity and character continually. Lord, help them not be haughty or self-righteous or bitter, but to be blameless before you, to be moral, ethical, and responsible with the money you have given them. I pray they would have accountable relationships in their lives.

Lord, move us to do your Will in all things. To not be led in the directions we think are best, but where You want us to reside.

  3. One of the growing moments in the disciples relationship with Jesus was the night they were making their way across the Sea of Galilee and a sudden storm came up. (Mark 6:45-52). As would be expected of any one of us, concern for their personal safety came upon them. Jesus, back on land because He needed to be in prayer with the Father, became aware of the circumstances His disciples were experiencing. Were they going to make it or was He about to lose the twelve of them whom He had been preparing to be His witnesses to the ends of the earth? Most certainly not so He acted in a most miraculous way to save them. As the account of the incident ends, the disciples were blown away both mentally and spiritually because they had not reached the level of understanding of Jesus being their Savior in both big and small ways. They had yet to see the cross and the empty tomb. You and I have experienced the cross and empty tomb, so how should we respond when the sudden storms come up as we make our way through life? Is He about to lose any one of us whom He has been using to be a witness onto His glory. Most certainly not! “Take heart,” Jesus said, “it is I. Do not be afraid!” The purpose of our salvation in both little difficulties and major difficulties is for the purpose of being a witness to the love of God for all. That purpose WILL be accomplished.

    UPDATE ON MY YOUNG FRIEND: "Little Maribel was delivered yesterday. She is 2 lbs and Mommy and Baby are doing well." What a miracle. It seems so daunting for this young family, then I remembered that over 75 years ago, my husband was born at 3 lbs, 3 oz. Over 30 years ago, my best friend had a baby girl weighing the same and I look at what God has done in their lives and I am encouraged. So, thank you for your continued prayers.
    I've read this devotion over and over. " If you want to stay close to Me and do things My way, ask Me to show you the path forward moment by moment. Instead of dashing headlong toward your goal, let Me set the pace. Slow down, and enjoy the journey in My presence." I'm giving it all to you, Lord. With love and gratitude in my heart, I know Your will, though I don't always understand, is the best.
    Continued prayers for all of this wonderful JC Family.

  9. Good Morning JC Family! I too am overwhelmed with Joy and Praise that GOD led me here to see my prayers in print knowing that none of you know me personally but GOD does and he allows me to see, I am not alone! When you are talking to GOD and bearing your soul and sometimes feel like your prayer is selfish although you just want to be a vessel he can use in HIS way for HIS purpose, it is GREAT to see other believers go through some of your same moments! TO GOD BE THE GLORY FOR THE THINGS HE HAS DONE AND CONTINUE TO DO IN EACH OF OUR LIVES!
    I love you JC Family, May GOD exceed our expectations AGAIN on this day.

  13. Payton family, I was inspired by your prayer at the beginning of the blog today. I know it's from 2013, but your pleas for wisdom could be anyone's at anytime - so relevant today. What made me smile is your conversation with Warren, how he said that you are most passionate when talking about Christ. You said he was right, but you didn't know what that would look like...as an observer, this blog is clearly that passion. So many people are being reached and touched by this seed you planted. Looking at the comments, it is building new relationships and faith each year. What a wonderful place to find encouragement and no criticism- a rarity in the today's world! I appreciate you hearing God's call in this blog, even if that was not your original intention. I only pray that I can be still long enough to see what direction God is calling me. Thank you.

  14. A very chilly day here on the east coast, but nevertheless, I am grateful Lord to be granted a new day, in Your Presence.

    We all face obstacles and at times, the end results can be difficult to deal with because they may hinder our plans and processes, they may prevent us from pressing forward to accomplish our dreams and desires the Lord has placed on our hearts and they can also stop us from seeing the enormous untapped potential for our future and relationship with the Lord.

    We cannot have spiritual growth without dealing with obstacles. As believers, We have and will deal with many unimaginable obstacles in the path of the Lord’s direction for their lives. What we do with them is what matters.
    I learned through a bible lesson that in order to deal with the many obstacles in our lives and live in the Presence of the Lord, we must:
    Put aside all sinful behaviors. Heb. 12:1 says: “Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us”.
    Trust in God for strength and wisdom to deal with the obstacles. Isaiah 12;2- “Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The Lord, the Lord himself, is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation”.
    Deal with the strongholds in our mind. 2 Cor. 10:4-6- “The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ”.
    Know that nothing is too difficult for God. Jer. 32:27-“I am the Lord, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?”.
    Recognize that God uses obstacles for His purposes. Gen 50:20- “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives”.

    The Obstacles we face reminds us of our weaknesses and also serves as a reminder that God is in control. When we take a moment to slow down and enjoy the journey in the Lord’s Presence, we are telling Him, we Trust You Lord. God is omnipresent, meaning He is present at all times and in all places. He is also omnipotent, God has all power and authority. In a nutshell, He is power, He is infinite and limitless.

    God's Spirit lives within believers (John 14:23). We don’t have to go to a particular place to seek His presence, however, we are called to worship Him and be led by His Spirit that lives in us.
    Today, take time to de-stress and live in His presence.

    1. Dear Anonymous from Maplewood, NJ, In my days as a conditioning coach for a football team, I had to make clear to the players that only when it is more difficult are we getting stronger. Otherwise, we stay the way we are. What is true physically is also true spiritually. It is in the difficult times that we grow in faith. Without them, we plateau and stay the way we are. It will never be good if it is always easy. God be with you.

      Delete
    2. Amen dear Maplewood. Praying for your procedure to go well with the Lord’s guidance and help. Your words spoke to my heart. We grow spiritually through the trials and tribulations because we are trusting in the Lord through them, and holding onto His Hand. God allows hard times to test and strengthen our faith. As hard as it is to experience problems or illnesses, our faith not only carries us through but shows others our Hope and strength, and peace and faith. We lead others to Him by our witness. We grow more spiritually in the valleys of life, than in the easy times..
      Amen, Bob, without the difficult times, “we plateau and stay the way we are.”
      God bless and heal you both, and keep you wrapped tightly in His love and care.

  18. A verse that is dear to my heart, I John 4:16b: "God is love, and those who live in love live in God and God lives in them." John goes on to say to love God is demonstrated in love of others. Whenever we love someone, we draw near to God. When we learn to love everyone, we live in the presence of God. When we love our self as God loves us, we have entered eternal life. God be with you.

    1. Yes we should love ourselves as God loves us, for are those of us who are saved not completely forgiven by Him?
      Yet loving ourselves does NOT give us eternal life, that is misleading to seekers.
      Eternal Life comes only through being Born Again, not even baptism gives us Eternal Life. That's the Biblical position:
      John 3:3 In reply Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is Born Again."
      4"How can a man be born when he is old?" Nicodemus asked. "Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother's womb to be born!"
      5 Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit.
      John 3:16" For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
      John 17:3 " And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent."
      John's:14 " But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
      Many other similar scriptures are available.

  24. Maplewood, thanks for the kind words... each of us has a journey, some may appear to be more challenging, but I don't think that is the case. As imperfect followers of Christ, we can't help but to have fear. And fear is a liar! We posted that song last year. So no matter how great or small the challenge, with our constantly weak faith (the valleys), perhaps we look at others as managing challenges better.

    I certainly have fears but it is "pure joy" to read the love and prayers offered here to a neighbor via an internet "street" and thereby strengthen my faith that all things are working for good. "It's gonna be okay", no matter the outcome, when we follow the example of our Lord as best we can. Each of us has been given what we need, we just need to tap into the Spirit and allow His grace to soothe our soul. Be at peace and may the Great Healer do so today. Godspeed.

I am just very sad that this is the decision I have had to make. I also keep questioning myself although I know I am on the right path. I ask you for prayers of guidance and support.

    I am also dealing with some medical issues. I am scheduled for a procedure on Wednesday but the the doctor may want to schedule another, more invasive procedure. Asking for prayers that my body heals, especially before the more invasive procedure is needed.

    An update on my sweet sister, Janet. Your prayers are working! Thanks for your prayers. She got evaluated at the hospital. Her blood work, EKG and Cat Scan were normal. They got her bp down to 150. The quick test came back negative but she will hear the real test results tonight, She has a bad headache but she’s taking Tylenol. 38. Father, help me to enjoy and look at life as an adventure that You and I are on together daily. Let me take in and enjoy all the moments along the way and not try to just be done with tasks as they pop up and become needed to accomplish. Help me to not look at my life as one big checklist of things to do and to realize that life is full of surprises and it's not to be "checked off". It's to be lived and enjoyed. Let me rejoice in all the moments You are giving me in this life. Thank You Jesus. Praise God always. In Jesus name, I pray, Amen 🙏.

    5. Wonderful truth dear Janet. No matter what lies ahead of us, the Lord is by our side. We must live our lives and take the good with the bad. The bad gives us an opportunity to test our faith, glorify God and lead others to Him by our strong witness. He is holding our reins so we must do our best not to keep yanking them back. Not feeling so good today. Yesterday I ate some leftovers that were just too old. It tasted good but it was in I should have chucked it a few days ago. Now I'm paying for it. I've been saying to the Lord that He knows exactly how I feel. I am resting in Him because this too shall pass. Had my son's family over for dinner. All went well but I've had a tummy ache all day. Had peppermint tea, fresh ginger and honey but it still hurts. But I have a more important request for prayers.
      Please pray for healing of my dear sister Janet. She was supposed to fly to NY from Missouri this Tuesday 1/11 but she called for our morning prayers today and she sounded terrible. She said she has a respiratory problem and a fever of 102. She isn't going anywhere. She got a rapid test today which was negative. She and her husband are getting the PCR test on Tuesday. God is leading this and it was a good thing she had to cancel her trip especially because my Mom is 93 and fragile. God is guiding her so she will come to visit when she is better, according to His perfect timing and His amazing healing power. Thank You Jesus!

  43. Driving to Brooklyn to see my Mom and sister and brother in love once more before I start treatment on 1/13 and my sister and her good hubby return to Missouri on 1/14. I will stay overnight and rest and then drive home in the morning. God arranged this perfectly because originally I was going to see my oldest son today but my son switched it to Wed which freed up today. Thank You Jesus. He is always in charge. I'll be praying for you my dear family. Have a sweet and blessed day knowing that He has already prepared it. Find times to be still and hear His small voice. Lately He has just been saying: Don't be afraid. Everything is going to be alright. I know that too.
    Psalm 46:1-3
    God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
    Therefore we will not fear, even though the earth be removed,
    And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;
    Though its waters roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with its swelling. Selah
    We know He is the Calm in the storm, He is the Answer, He is the Truth. He is the Light. He is our Love. He is our Gift that continues to give right into eternity. How blessed we are to belong to Him.

    3. Dear Sweet Audra --- The great news is that our God specializes in delivering us in times of need, and there seems to be, at this time, an uptick in Spiritual Warfare. So in these situations, I look to the WORD that speaks to me. I call out the enemy, and say, "I sweep out ALL the power of the enemy of darkness out of my house and off my loved ones. I put on the Whole Armor of God and claim every verse of the 91st Psalm and Plead the Blood of Jesus over everything that I want protected. I deny the enemy access to all that touches my life and my Mighty God perfects that which concerns me. I Declare that this is my time to THRIVE, not survive. And, devil, you ARE a defeated foe. You can't defeat THE BLOOD! My Father God is UNDEFEATED and He WILL NEVER LOSE! He causes us to Triumph, because NO weapon formed against us will prosper!
      I pray all of this over your circumstances, Audra. And I bind to you: The Love of God, His Way, His Plan, His Goodness, His Healing, His Restoration, His Joy, , His Peace, His Expectations and His Grand Celebration! I Pray and Believe In Jesus' Name, AMEN and AMEN. JJ

  49. 'When you decide on a course of action that is in line with My will, nothing in heaven or on earth can stop you.'
    Being in, walking in, God's Will is the most satisfying, peace filling, joyous way of life.
    There are times when we know we're in it, times we hope we're in it, and times we know we're not in it.
    Praying to, desiring to, know God's Will usually does not result in a panorama or vista opening out for us to see our way forward.
    For me and probably most of us, it's asking daily "Thy Will be done in my life today" it's telling Him "I want to walk daily in Your Will", then expecting that He will lead according to His Will.
    With many decades of experience with my Lord, I KNOW He will only lead according to His Will, so I am more relaxed.
    As a younger man I would agonize over being in His Will, especially in the larger decisions; my career/vocation, is the woman I love the one to marry, what is Your calling on my life, should I study for the ministry, should we go to the mission field? etc, etc. I wish I knew Him then, like I know Him now!

    Sometimes we are like Jonah, we know His Will but don't want to do it. However God has a way anyway, of turning us around 180° aligning us with His Will just like Jonah; only most of us don't get to be swallowed up by a great fish!

    Psalm 25:4-5
    Show me your ways, Lord,
    teach me your paths.
    Guide me in your truth and teach me,
    for you are God my Savior,
    and my hope is in you all day long.

    Psalm 25:8-9
    Good and upright is the Lord;
    therefore he instructs sinners in his ways.
    He guides the humble in what is right
    and teaches them his way.

    Psalm 119:105
    Your word is a lamp for my feet,
    a light on my path.

    Proverbs 3:5-6
    Trust in the Lord with all your heart
    and lean not on your own understanding;
    in all your ways submit to him,
    and he will make your paths straight.

    Proverbs 19:21
    Many are the plans in a person’s heart,
    but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.

    Jeremiah 29:11
    For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

    Psalm 63
    1 You, God, are my God,
    earnestly I seek you;
    I thirst for you,
    my whole being longs for you,
    in a dry and parched land
    where there is no water.
    2 I have seen you in the sanctuary
    and beheld your power and your glory.
    3 Because your love is better than life,
    my lips will glorify you.
    4 I will praise you as long as I live,
    and in your name I will lift up my hands.
    5 I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods;
    with singing lips my mouth will praise you.
    6 On my bed I remember you;
    I think of you through the watches of the night.
    7 Because you are my help,
    I sing in the shadow of your wings.
    8 I cling to you;
    your right hand upholds me.

    A good hymn to sing at this time of a new year is "Take my life and let it be, consecrated Lord to Thee....."
    5th stanza is:
    "Take my will and make it thine;
    it shall be no longer mine.
    Take my heart it is thine own;
    it shall be thy royal throne,
    it shall be thy royal throne.

  50. Great devotion for all of us. I know God is with us always. Our days are in His Hands and He is aware of all we’re going through. Sometimes we must put our lives aside to do His Will. But He is guiding us as we stay in His presence. I wanna be a faithful servant and more selfless than selfish. I will try to be a beacon even when I don’t feel like it. God’s light never fades or goes out and we’re filled with the light of Christ. Just as Paul was happy to be weak because God’s grace was sufficient and God was His strength,I’m glad I’m broken so His light will shine through my cracks. Praying my mom and I have a happy day and that God will give her an appetite. But I’m gonna put her feelings first so if she only wants to eat goldfish crackers then that’s what she’ll eat. I wanna make her days sweet. May God’s Spirit give me the right words and a cheerful heart no matter how I feel. Thank You Jesus.
    May God lift you all up high above your circumstances and fill your heart and your path with His light, joy and hope, and strengthen all your weaknesses, and heal your infirmities in Jesus’ Name. Amen

    2 Corinthians 12:9
    And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

    Psalm 28:7
    The Lord is my strength and my shield; My heart trusted in Him, and I am helped; Therefore my heart greatly rejoices, And with my song I will praise Him.

  51. Let us be reminded that Faith in Jesus does not remove all the struggles we may encounter in life. Still, we know that “in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Somehow, even despite bad things that can happen in our lives, God works to conform us “to the image of his Son.” And Paul goes on to say, “In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Thank God for the hope that we can have in You
