Genesis 22:17 - Abraham's Extraordinary God

Genesis 22:17
Indeed I will greatly bless you, and I will greatly multiply your seed as the stars of the heavens, and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your seed shall possess the gate of their enemies.

Time: Genesis is the first book and Moses is credited as authoring. The book spans 2400 years of time. It was originally written in Hebrew.

What the Lord is Saying: The author of this article talks about going to the beach as a family in the summer. Genesis 22:17 speaks of an angel of the Lord from heaven speaking to Abraham after he went to sacrifice his son Isaac (though God stopped it) and giving him the promise that his seed will be multiplied and that multiplication number will look like the sand on the seashore. Yet, Abraham would not experience this in his lifetime. When he died he did not see this multiplying number of offspring.

God's promises are extravagant. To think that he gave a promise to Abraham that his seed will be an numerous as the sand speaks to extreme way that God wants to bless his people. I see this at times in my life, blessing others or giving them hopefully more than they expect. But it is a promise that I need to remember, that God wants to bless his people. So much is spoken of his judgment and wrath and yet, he wants to bless and provide. But it is focused on his called ones.

He blesses us as well in the giving of His Son - giving up His Son at Calvary, on the cross, so that His people will live. If anything, could it be that we make salvation too hard. If God is really a God that wants to give so much to us, is it possible that we restrict His giving by coming up with too many rules to merit salvation. Granted, God is Holy and He is to be respected and esteemed. But sometimes I just wonder about God's extravagant love for his people and what that really means.

Galatians 3:29 is such a powerful verse, "And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's offspring, heir according to promise." The promise. That is an incredible verse and idea. This connects the dots. The sand on the seashore.

This author states, "So, the next time you’re at the beach, grasp a handful of sand. Then, let it sprinkle from your fist and see in the windswept particles an extravagant promise, a bloody cross, and an extraordinary God."

Prayer: It is hard to fathom God this and that your plan would include me. But, I love the idea that it includes many more than me. To celebrate with one another, cheering, arm in arm, hugging and joyful for the reward that you have for us in heaven is what it is all about. Thank you for your great love, your extravagant Love. You are great and great to be praised. Thank you for connecting these dots and I pray I am one of the particles of sand on the seashore. Help me to communicate this more and more.

John 17:25-26 - Making Known the Father's Name

John 17:25-26
25 “O righteous Father, although the world has not known You, yet I have known You; and these have known that You sent Me; 26 and I have made Your name known to them, and will make it known, so that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them.”

Time: John most likely wrote between A.D. 85 and 90. John's purpose in writing was, "that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name (John 20:31)."

What the Lord is Saying: As Jesus is praying, I continue to see the words that he is saying and how he is praying to see whether or not I need to pattern my prayers after him. This prayer is for the disciples as in the last several chapters of John I believe Jesus has been all about encouraging them that while He is leaving they will be fine and they will be good and actually in the best place possible in their lives. This chapter has chronicled an interesting prayer. In less than 2 weeks I am going to teach on it in Sunday school. Got some work to do on it and putting it together still.

This proclamation by Jesus here in these 2 verses seems rather simple. The gist of it that I see is He is proclaiming not necessarily interceding and stating that the Love will be present in us and Jesus will be present in us. May our lives be about love. And may Jesus be in us as we live. He voices truths about who we are and theology he proclaims as well, almost educating us a little through His words - that Jesus and His purpose is to bring the Father's love to them. And so that that love - the Love of the Father - may reside in us. May God's love be in us.

How easily I could pray this for my kids but I don't. Lord, may your love always be present in my kid's lives. And Jesus may you be in my kids. May you live and act and breath through them so that their lives and our lives better represent You.

The other interesting idea from this next is the fact that Jesus says that for His children He has made the name of God known to them. I am not sure we recognize completely the ramifications of this statement. We are so appalled often by the sinfulness of our society and yet should we really be that surprised and should we not first have such compassion and understanding toward people that do not know the name of God in their lives. We know the Father because of Christ's work. We have an understanding of God that others don't have. The reason we preach the gospel and speak it to people is they simply don't have this understanding. I see this clearly when we approach people at the mall. Sometimes they have such a distance from God and have conjured up so many other ideas of who God is to them. But we are His people, knowing His name and His very character.

The other promise from Jesus is the name of God will continue to be made known. At times, it feels like the world is getting darker and less are knowing Him, but in reality Jesus as promised is continuing to make the name of God known. He says in this scripture that the world does not know Him.

From Tabletalk, "Christ's goal is that we may way, in some mysterious way, having in our hearts a love for God that is like the very love that God has for us, and that on account of that love Christ would dwell among us."

We know His name and we are strengthened in the process by knowing that name. Do we realize the significance of having the love of the Father in us? Our world has been changed and all we are has been changed. Our entire perspective on life has been changed. We see life differently from others. This can be hard because the difference between the two does seem to be increasing. But if anything what we have now is more clarity in the difference between the two.

Summary: Contrary to the world, we who have been sent to Jesus by God, know Him and Jesus will continue to make God's name known so Christ will be in us and know God's love.

Promise: From RC Sproul, "The knowledge of His everlasting love for us gives us the strength we need to fulfill the mission that He has given to us."

Prayer: O God, you love me. I know this now. You have an extreme love for me that I don't think I grasp completely on a daily basis. So much of my life is me centered and wanting the best for me. I realize that often I am selfish and want people to stay here on this earth and so I pray for them to not suffer. That is not bad, but help my words to You be more focused on that Love that you desire for all men. That the most important thing for me and for everyone is to have the love of God in them. For my children, may the love of God be in them. May you be present in their lives and be in them. Work through them. May their lives be about You and making You known.

John 16:25-28 - The Love of the Father

John 16:25-28
25 "These things I have spoken to you in figurative language; an hour is coming when I will speak no more to you in figurative language, but will tell you plainly of the Father. 26 In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I will request the Father on your behalf; 27 for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me, and have believed that I came forth from the Father. 28 I came forth from the Father, and have come into the world; I am leaving the world again, and going to the Father."

Time: John most likely wrote between A.D. 85 and 90. John's purpose in writing was, "that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name (John 20:31)."

What the Lord is Saying: The Farewell Discourse by Jesus continues and for me this discourse has had the theme of comfort Jesus is giving to His disciples as He is glorified or leaves this earth to be with the Father. I have seen a theme in this book of Jesus preaching the Gospel of Good news, namely that everyone can have eternal life in Him and people giving their lives over to Jesus completely, surrendering themselves to Him. seeing that He has been sent by the Father and the Father and Him are one. Jesus has also, upon His departure, given us the promise of His Holy Spirit.

Currently, the disciples are still having a hard time really understanding this idea that Jesus is leaving. Despite the promise He has giving them that things will actually be better when He is gone, they still are struggling with the idea.

As Jesus has been speaking, people are having a hard time understanding Him. Maybe this is because they have been trained about spiritual things in a certain way, not understanding the Kingdom of God that Jesus continually speaks about - namely the place where Jesus the Messiah lives and manifests Himself to His people. living in community with them, bringing them everlasting life.

In today's verses Jesus speaks about how His ministry will change upon His departure - as the Spirit will give people greater understanding of His work and ministry. The plain speaking that is coming is "of the Father." And He acknowledges that in those days people will understand that "I (Jesus) came forth from the Father."

The times are changing in that God's children will understand more fully that God has Sent His Son Jesus and in that people will pray and make requests in the name of Jesus. This is why we pray "In Jesus' name" often at the end of our prayers because Jesus tells that they will ask in His name.

Summary: After Jesus departs, people will understand completely that Jesus has been sent by the Father and they will ask in Jesus' name and the Father will hear their prayers.

Promise: The Father Loves us and wants to hear from us.

Prayer: Thank you Father for your great love for us and knowing us and communicating clearly who You are. You have told me. I know. It is hard that so many in our world though have hardened ways and do not understand. They are blinded continually by their own flesh, the drawing of the world, the work of Satan. O God, open blind eyes so that many more will understand who You are - the King of this World, for all eternity. I pray that many more will know you. Build community in our world. Build peace among your called ones, so that we will be of one accord. Be praised always.

John 13:34-35 - A New Commandment from Christ

John 13:34-35
34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.

Time: John most likely wrote between A.D. 85 and 90. John's purpose in writing was, "that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name (John 20:31)."

What the Lord is Saying: Jesus is in the middle of speaking about His departure from this life. In the previous verses He talks of His glorification - that His mission on earth is soon complete when He will be glorified - bearing the punishment of all people's sin but then also conquering death and ascending to be with the Father. He has shown Himself to be a servant to the disciples and even as He did this encouraged His disciples to serve in the same manner toward one another (v. 14-15).

Jesus remarks that He is giving them a new commandment and yet this commandment does not seem to be new. Not in the Gospel of John, but in Matthew and Mark, a Pharisee had come asking Jesus what the greatest commandment was in the Law and Jesus took that opportunity to summarize all the commandments speaking of our love for God with all of our heart and then love for our neighbor as ourselves (Matthew 22:34-39). Going further back to Leviticus (1400 years prior) are these words in 19:18, "You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the sons of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself; I am the Lord." Thus, the principle of loving one another was not knew. I don't think we can simply say that John didn't know about these prior words.

But here Jesus mentions this as a "new commandment." Again, Jesus spoke previously of washing one another's feet and now in this verse he mentions a bigger principle and purpose and outcome related to loving one another that maybe has it now as a motive that has never been spelled out before. In washing another's feet we speak forth the idea of serving one another. And now the result of loving one another is "By this all men will know that you are My disciples." Jesus will soon be glorified and He will ascend to be with the Father as He has stated the disciples will not be going (v. 32-33). How then are we to live once He leaves? On earth, people saw Jesus and came to know Him through His presence on earth, but once He leaves, how will people come to know the Lord? Through our love.

This challenges me and us i think to always think about what it means to love one another, truly love one another. It motivates me to really consider others and consider their needs and make them more important than myself (Phil. 2:3 - let each of you regard one another as more important than himself).

This is a love that when others people see the love they recognize us being from God. All we are doing in our life is meant to point people to Jesus, having been sent by God. Our motivation is to not to only get people to love in the same way, but to know God. We don't want anyone to be rejected by Jesus (12:48). Therefore, we love. No matter the circumstance.

The betrayal has just been mentioned by Jesus. Jesus was betrayed for money, and yet we are to be about love. Jesus' love remains the same for Judas as it does for His other disciples. Keep on loving one another. Don't get focused on how people are reacting. Maybe Jesus is wanting to call attention to this - that we love because He loved us and we keep loving so people will keep seeing the connection we have with Jesus- that we follow Jesus. We are His disciples. We are not simply people who love one another, but our love is because of Jesus loving us.

My tendency always is when people are rejecting or different from or not agreeing with me, my tendency is to have anger. Yesterday, with my wife I had this bout of selfishness. My wife was focused on others and serving others and being there for others, but I was caught up in a basketball game and wanting to enjoy it, thinking it was the joy I needed. I was struggling, maybe irate, I don't know, but I voiced my displeasure towards her. I was focused on selfish needs, but I should be focused instead on love. On loving others. I think again of those Resolutions from Jonathan Edwards and no. 59: "Resolved, when I am most conscious of provocations to ill-nature and anger, that I will strive most to feel and act good-naturedly." May I be resolved to be good-natured first, even as anger is raising its head in me. Will I stop and be good natured and love others?

Summary: Jesus tells us to love one another as He has loved us so that all will know that we are His disciples.

Promise: Let us ask God to give us the strength to love our fellow believers truly so that we might be a witness to Him in the world.

Prayer: O Lord, I thank you for this great reminder of truth and my need to have love for others, not simply because this is a good trait, but because You have loved me and I want people to know that I am a follower of You. I want to point people back to you so that they accept you as Savior and Lord. Lord, remove my selfishness and remove the tendency I have to be ill-natured or angry. Let me be about love always in relating to others.

John 13:1 - Loved to the End

John 13:1 - Now before the Feast of the Passover, Jesus knowing that His hour had come that He should depart out of this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.

Time: John most likely wrote between A.D. 85 and 90. John's purpose in writing was, "that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name (John 20:31)."

What the Lord is Saying: I head into chapter 13 now and think back to Chapter 12 and the many different themes of that chapter, such as: people who are following Jesus and are recognizing Him for who He says He is, sent by God, with an eternal purpose to provide salvation. Yet, naturally, many others do not see and instead see Him as a threat to their own established ways. God wants to save people but this will come at a cost: Jesus dying and Jesus knows this and finds trouble in this at times, yet still trusting God. Others want Jesus to be something He is not, rescuing them now from the political forces. Believing in Jesus will be transforming to lives today, away from a life of living in darkness. This is forever the mark of man's existence - eternal life with God or eternal contempt not with God. Trust God, believe in Jesus today.

As I head into chapter 13 to study and learn from it and how it will speak to me - I see that the Passover Feast is coming, but first something else ("Now before the feast of the Passover").

And "Jesus knowing His hour had come." Departure time. God had sent His Son into the world to announce salvation through Jesus. But His time on earth is limited because God wants to save people from judgment and while people are being saved at this time, upon his resurrection and ascension people will be saved with more abundance. Jesus knows this. Jesus has eternity in Him. While He can still be troubled at his impending death, and who of us is not fearful of that day, He can still trust God completely.

He does this because He loves us - "having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end." I am not sure if I have read John describe Jesus' love with these specific words of "He loved." Jesus' love is apparent everywhere He goes as He heals people and brings them to physical life and healing but also eternal life and healing, but in these words John mentions Jesus and His love for those here and His love will not end.

Summary: Jesus knows his departure time from earth is soon, going to the Father, and His love for people remains.

Promise: From Tabletalk -- Jesus loved us enough to submit Himself to the worst death possible—death under the wrath and curse of God.

Prayer: O How You love me. Thank you for the great love and thank you for planting that love in me and your sacrifice for me. forever conquering the grave.

John 3:35 - The Father's Love for His Son

John 3:35
The Father loves the Son and has given all things into His hand.

Message: The Father's Love for His Son

Time: John most likely wrote between A.D. 85 and 90. John's purpose in writing was, "that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name (John 20:31)."

What the Lord is Saying: Verse 35 seems like a culminating verse in what has been voiced thus far. Yet, this is the first time the Father is mentioned in chapter 3. In Chapter 1:14, We saw the Word (Jesus) "glory as of the only begotten from the Father." Jesus in 2:16 asks those in the sanctuary to "stop making My Father’s house a place of business." As such there is clearly a distinction between the Father and the Son. The Father loves the Son. And yet though there is a distinction it also reads here that the Father "has given all things into His hand." As such there is nothing that the Father has that the Son lacks. And yet the Father sends the Son. They share the same divine essence.

Matthew 11:27 says, "All things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father; nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him."

John 6:46, "Not that anyone has seen the Father, except the One who is from God; He has seen the Father."

Summary: Jesus has it all. He is loved by the Father and the Father has given him all things.

Promise: God has revealed Himself fully and finally in His Son, Jesus Christ.

Prayer. O God, thank you for sending your Son and giving Him all things. He is all that you are God.

John 3:16 - God's Love for the World

John 3:16
For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.

Time: John most likely wrote between A.D. 85 and 90. John's purpose in writing was, "that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name (John 20:31)."

What the Lord is Saying: As I study and read now today's passage John 3:16, probably the most well-known verse scripture in all of scripture, I notice that part of the verse is a repeat of verse 15, "that whoever believes will in Him have eternal life." It is also a repeat of John 3:13, "but He who descended from heaven: the Son of Man" though stated more succinctly. In a way, it is a summary of what He has stated before, yet he adds that "God so loved the World."

It is interesting but for a long time the John 3:16 flew high on Sunday at NFL football games when kickers kicked the extra point. What is sad is the man that raised these signs actually was not what one would call a strong Christian and had some issues, marrying 4 times and is now in prison. And yet he had an influence possibly on this verse being a stalwart now in society. It is a verse that most Christians have memorized.

And yet it is a verse that I am not sure the non-Christians reads in its entirety for it focuses on Love, Hell, and Heaven and most I think stop at the Love part. Christ is shown as the only way to avoid perishing. This means he comes at a time when people are perishing and provides the answer to this problem.

Yet, the Love is significant. When one thinks of the God of the Old Testament as told through its writers, I don't think it is "Love" that we focus on. Instead I think of a God set apart, creator, the one who has been ignored, sinned against. But Jesus does something here that has not since been spoken. He states that God loves. Alexander Maclaren says, "‘God loves’ is the greatest thing that can be said by lips."

And this Love is personal because our belief is meant to be personal and individual. So I can know that God loves me.

The remarkable thing about this passage is the focus on the world, "Believe" and that somehow Jesus is making it well known that to bring about eternal life a person must simply believe. Belief is not a works oriented word, but it is actually something that occurs in the heart. And yet believing in Him, Jesus, the Son of Man, means we are believing in all He is and all that He has done. So, that needs to be central in that belief. But, again, I don't see that there is anything that I have done to make myself worthy of believing apart from believing. But instead Jesus says that the work is Himself and that God gave up the Son. One things of Abraham and taking his only son up to offer him as a sacrifice and we see this picture but it is made clear that man does not sacrifice, but rather God provides the sacrifice of His Son for us.

Romans 5:6-8 speaks of this same idea though focusing on Jesus dying for us, "For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."

The verse speaks of a general love God has for the world, but in saying that people must believe, we can know that there are many that do not believe in Him. In life often, Jesus is not the name coming off of people's lips. God is mentioned, but Jesus is often not mentioned.

Also of note is perishing and eternal life. These outcomes can occur before the grave. People without the love of Jesus and believing in Him are even now perishing. But those who have Christ and believe are living in eternal life or hope. The hope contrasted by the perishing is powerful in our world today.

Summary: God's love is significant and is a love that up to this point has not been mentioned in this way by God for His people and yet it is a love central to our Bible and changes everything about us who believe for eternity.

Promise: The love of God is not a given, so we should be grateful for it and be careful never to speak of His love as something that we are owed or that He must show.

Prayer: O God, I thank you for your great Love for me. It is a love that does not change. I believe, and yet I know my belief in You changes and is like wind and chaff sometimes that waves. I have times of denial and I am embarrassed by this. I have times when I hide my belief. But God you love still. And You have saved me from all penalty and grant me a hope and a reality of eternal life that is remarkable. Thank you God for saving me. Thank you for making me whole and presenting me Jesus before God for all eternity.

My Utmost for His Highest - May 11th - You Won't Reach It On Tiptoe

And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. - 2 Peter 1:7

Love is indefinite to most of us, we do not know what we mean when we talk about love. Love is the sovereign preference of one person for another, and spiritually Jesus demands that that preference be for Himself (cf. Luke 14:26). When the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost, Jesus Christ is easily first; then we must practice the working out of these things mentioned by Peter.

The first thing God does is to knock pretence and the pious pose right out of me. The Holy Spirit reveals that God loved me not because I was lovable, but because it was His nature to do so. Now, He says to me, show the same love to others--"Love as I have loved you. (John 15:12)" "I will bring any number of people about you whom you cannot respect, and you must exhibit My love to them as I have exhibited it to you." You won't reach it on tiptoe. Some of us have tried to, but we were soon tired.

"The Lord suffereth long . . .  (2 Peter 3:9)" Let me look within and see His dealings with me. The knowledge that God has loved me to the uttermost, to the end of all my sin and meanness and selfishness and wrong, will send me forth into the world to love in the same way. God's love to me is inexhaustible, and I must love others from the bedrock of God's love to me. Growth in grace stops the moment I get huffed. I get huffed because I have a peculiar person to live with. Just think how disagreeable I have been to God! Am I prepared to be so identified with the Lord Jesus that His life and His sweetness are being poured out all the time? Neither natural love nor Divine love will remain unless it is cultivated. Love is spontaneous, but it has to be maintained by discipline.

My Utmost for His Highest - April 30th - The Spontaneity of Love

4 Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, 5 does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, 6 does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away. - I Corinthians 13:4-8

Love is not premeditated, it is spontaneous, i.e., it bursts up in extraordinary ways. There is nothing of mathematical certainty in Paul's category of love. We cannot say--"Now I am going to think no evil; I am going to believe all things." The characteristic of love is spontaneity. We do not set the statements of Jesus in front of us as a standard; but when His Spirit is having His way with us, we live according to His standard without knowing it, and on looking back we are amazed at the disinterestedness of a particular emotion, which is the evidence that the spontaneity of real love was there. In everything to do with the life of God in us, its nature is only discerned when it is past.

[The springs of love are in God, not in us. It is absurd to look for the love of God in our hearts naturally, it is only there when "it has been shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit. (Romans 5:5)"]

If we try to prove to God how much we love Him, it is a sure sign that we do not love Him. The evidence of our love for Him is the absolute spontaneity of our love, it comes naturally. In looking back we cannot tell why we did certain things, we did them according to the spontaneous nature of His love in us. The life of God manifests itself in this spontaneous way because the springs of love are in the Holy Ghost.

My thoughts
This lesson is near yesterday's. The idea I think is basically that I cannot manufacture my love for God for Love is spontaneous and since He is in me, my love to Him comes about in spontaneity. It is not forced or predetermined. It happens according to His ways and timing.

My Utmost for His Highest - October 18 - The Key to Missionary Devotion

Because that for his name's sake they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles. - 3 John 7

Our Lord has told us how love to Him is to manifest itself. "Lovest thou Me" "Feed My Sheep (John 21:17)"--identify yourself with My interests in other people, not identify Me with your interests in other people. I Corinthians 13:4-8 gives the character of this love, it is the love of God expressing itself. The test of my love for Jesus is the practical one, all the rest is sentimental jargon.

Loyalty to Jesus Christ is the supernatural work of Redemption wrought in me by the Holy Ghost Who sheds abroad the love of God in my heart, and that love works efficaciously through me in contact with everyone I meet. I remain loyal to His Name although every common-sense fact gives the lie to Him, and declares that He has no more power than a morning mist.

The key to missionary devotion means being attached to nothing and no one saving Our Lord Himself, not being detached from things externally. Our Lord was amazingly in and out among ordinary things; His detachment was on the inside towards God. External detachment is often an indication of a secret vital attachment to the things we keep away from externally

The loyalty of a missionary is to keep his soul concentratedly open to the nature of the Lord Jesus Christ. The men and women Our Lord sends out on His enterprises are the ordinary human stuff, plus dominating devotion to Himself wrought by the Holy Ghost

My Thoughts
Efficacious - producing the desired effect

John 17:20-26 - The Trinity and God's Love for His People

John 17:20-26
20 “I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word; 21 that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me.
22 The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one; 23 I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me. 24 Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am, so that they may see My glory which You have given Me, for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.
25 “O righteous Father, although the world has not known You, yet I have known You; and these have known that You sent Me; 26 and I have made Your name known to them, and will make it known, so that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them.”

Message: The Trinity and God's Love for His People

Time: While John does not admit to have written this gospel, there is ample evidence from others that he did. It was most likely written in Ephesus around 85-95 AD and is the fourth gospel. John provides a Jesus more clearly as the Son of God. John cites Jesus' seven "I Am" statements, mentions many miracles of Jesus, signifying Him as God's Son. He is the Son of Man and atoned for our sins and the Son of God with eternal implications in rising from the dead.

What the Lord is Saying:

This study, on the doctrine of God, has been illuminating to me as I endeavor to better understand the God that loves me - chose me - wants me to be with Him forever. Today, I see that Jesus with the Father has always been. God's love for Jesus has been present before the foundation of the world.  Yesterday the message was often about unity and this message continues today.

For a moment, I pause to look at the words from Matthew Henry about this passage:
Our Lord especially prayed, that all believers might be as one body under one head, animated by one soul, by their union with Christ and the Father in him, through the Holy Spirit dwelling in them. The more they dispute about lesser things, the more they throw doubts upon Christianity. Let us endeavour to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace, praying that all believers may be more and more united in one mind and one judgment. Thus shall we convince the world of the truth and excellence of our religion, and find more sweet communion with God and his saints. Christ, as one with the Father, claimed on behalf of all that had been given to him, and should in due time believe on him, that they should be brought to heaven; and that there the whole company of the redeemed might behold his glory as their beloved Friend and Brother, and therein find happiness. He had declared and would further declare the name or character of God, by his doctrine and his Spirit, that, being one with him, the love of the Father to him might abide with them also. Thus, being joined to Him by one Spirit, they might be filled with all the fulness of God, and enjoy a blessedness of which we can form no right idea in our present state.
There is oneness with the Trinity in these verses that is expected to be present in all believers. I'm noticing, even moreso today than ever, that the world expects complete uniformity in all areas and finds disputes about many things. The church needs to be about more than this and needs to not dispute about lesser things but instead endeavor to keep the unity. That unity is present in the Godhead and Jesus mentions in this passage the unity found in His relationship with the Father. They are one. This oneness is addressed not to all people, but to all believers. As believers, we do all have different flavors of believing but we need to be more of a people of oneness and realize we are all serving our God together and our chief mission together is to reach all with the Gospel.

I notice that our church often does a good job with this and it is always something that has interested me about our church and the community desire to work together toward the gospel with other churches. As believers we to love one another, bear one another's burdens, and edify one another. As churches, all too often our focus is each body trying to figure out their mission whether than doing it together. O Lord, what would it look like if we were united together?

Promise: On our own, love is not easy. We tend to focus on our differences rather than our unity. But we can be a people of love toward one another. God's love for us never stops and our love toward one another is to never stop as well. Unite us Lord.

Prayer: These verses that I read today from John 17 speak Lord of unity. Lord, we need to be a people united. Lord, I think of this and wonder how we could do this and make this work in our community. We are a people with differences obviously in our worship styles, our preaching, our makeup in the churches, but we should be more about the same purpose and working together for that purpose in our community. There needs to be more unity.

Note: I follow the readings from the Tabletalk Magazine devotional, though I am a little behind and working through 2017 devotionals. 2017 is a study of key biblical doctrines with January being about the doctrine of God.

Mark 5:21-24a - Jairus Comes to Jesus

Mark 5:21-24a
21 When Jesus had crossed over again in the boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around Him; and so He stayed by the seashore.22 One of the synagogue officials named Jairus *came up, and on seeing Him, *fell at His feet 23 and *implored Him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death; please come and lay Your hands on her, so that she will get well and live.” 24a And He went off with him;

Message: Jairus Comes to Jesus

Time: Mark's personal connection with Peter gave him the source material for this book. This book was composed probably between AD 57 and AD 59. It's a book that is on the move, leading to the cross. 39 times is the word 'immediately' used. Mark reveals Jesus as God's servant, reaching into the lives of people and effecting physical and circumstantial change.

What the Lord is Saying:

Jesus has left the Geradene side of the lake (sea of Galilee) and now come back to the west side, at Capernaum and a large crowd gathered around Him; people were waiting for him to come back, anticipating his arrival. Thus, Jesus is getting more popular. "Christ ennobled Bethlehem by his birth, Nazareth by his education, and Jerusalem By his death, so he honored Capernaum by making it his ordinary residence, and the focus, so to speak, of his preaching and miracles. (Pulpit Commentary)."

One of the synagogue officials named Jairus came up, and on seeing Him, fell at His feet. Synagogue officials were Jewish layman (not full-time ministers) in charge of maintaining the building and organizing, such as the schedule of synagogue services; though there could have been more than one of these per synagogue.

Jairus implored Him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death; please come and lay Your hands on her, so that she will get well and live.” Matthew remarked that she was already dead in his account, yet later in Mark (v. 35) was the declaration that the daughter had died before the Lord could get to her. As a reminder, this account given to Mark probably came from Peter. It is possible that Peter knew Jairus or perhaps this stood out from Peter. It's difficult to know the details of these events. What we do know is Jesus went off with him. Jesus has compassion and concern and he addresses this man's need.

Promise: I can be confident that Jesus will address needs, my needs. He has compassion on specific needs and Mark wants us to know this through these words.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for being personal. Thank you for loving people, all people, and desiring to help people in their time of need. Thank you for the message that we receive from these words that you do care for people and want the best for them. Help us to have confidence in You at all times and in life. You will not always do exactly what we want all the time, but I continue to praise your name. Help others to trust you as well. Draw people closer to you.

Song of Solomon 8:13-14 - The Only Love That Can Fully Satisfy

Song of Solomon 8:13-14

He
13 O you who dwell in the gardens,
with companions listening for your voice;
let me hear it.
She
14 Make haste, my beloved,
and be like a gazelle
or a young stag
on the mountains of spices. looking through the lattice.

Message: The Only Love That Can Fully Satisfy

Time: Solomon wrote the book during his reign as king of Israel, meaning he composed it sometime between 971 and 931 BC.

What the Lord is Saying:

According to my Bible, these two verses are the voices of the man (v. 13) and the woman (v. 14). These are the last 2 verses of the book. They seem to echo a sentiment that has been present throughout the book, the longing of each person to be with the other person.

He Speaks (v. 13)
The bridegroom calls upon the (Shulammite) woman to let his friends, who have come to congratulate him on his bride's safe return, listen to him. She seems to reside in the garden, perhaps a special spot for her. Like Solomon, I notice a simple delight in hearing the voice of my bride, my wife. Many voices of my day can make me impatient and I tire sometimes with people, but with my wife I never tire. I always look forward to her speaking. Often I feel like I am saying these words of Solomon, "let me hear it." It is possible the bride here is singing a song which she sang early on in their courtship. In essence, real love lasts.

She Speaks (v. 14)
In answer to his request, she sings. And her words point back to him and draw him in once again. His desire for her is met. He asks her to possibly sing or speak something from the past, a song that represented the foundation of their relationship. This verse echoes back to chapter 2, verse 9 when se says My beloved is like a gazelle or a young stag, there he stands behind our wall, gazing through the windows, looking through the lattice. Gazelle is used multiple times in this book. She uses gazelle to describe the dancing around or the way he leaps in her heart. He uses gazelle several times when talking of intimacy, namely her breasts, to speak of the delicate nature of them, it would seem. Delicate seems to speak of their smaller proportion. Bigger breasts are not appealing or attractive. The stag and gazelle also point to the speed at which he is coming for her.

On the mountains of spices paints a picture of ascending to a high place. Standing on the mountain results in a feeling that you are top of it all. And the spices augment this with a sweet aroma. Paul remarked that man is to love his wife and here the bride is experiencing the result of that great love. Once again, she is being set apart and is distinct from all others. How it hurts a woman to be compared to. My wife told me early on in our marriage that the thing that saddens her the most is my wandering eye. She dislikes seeing men peer at other women with their wife right next to them. It should not be done at all, but then it is done in her presence. This should motivate me. And yet I find myself digressing from this in moments of anger or resentment. And yet how childish this is. It's like I'm looking elsewhere having a temper tantrum of sorts. My love and devotion needs to be more mature. My wife envelopes everything I desire and there should be no reason ever to look elsewhere. So, let this verse be a reminder of the continual need to pursue my wife.

Promise: It is true that God's love for us is the only that fully satisfies, and yet in this picture of marriage here is an encouragement to pursue one another. Obviously, as I age, that changes. We don't move around as fast and neither is in as good of shape. The times of intimacy are less, but they are still valuable. What I realize is my need to savor all that I have, even if what I have is different in these times. And in return, I see more and more the fullness of my relationship in Christ, who never changes.

Prayer: Lord, I want to trust in You alone and I want to thank you for the gift of my wife. Her words are what I look forward to hearing each day. Her presence is what I value. Help me to center always on her and her alone. Keep me pure Lord and my eyes focused loving my wife and her alone. Forgive me for me not keeping vow, but today I begin again. Thank you for her faithfulness and the sweet gift that she is.

Psalm 119:153-160 - Seeking God's Statutes

Psalm 119:153-160
153 Look upon my affliction and rescue me, for I do not forget Your law.
154 Plead my cause and redeem me; revive me according to Your word.
155 Salvation is far from the wicked, for they do not seek Your statutes.
156 Great are Your mercies, O Lord; revive me according to Your ordinances.
157 Many are my persecutors and my adversaries,
yet I do not turn aside from Your testimonies.
158 I behold the treacherous and loathe
them, because they do not keep Your word.
159 Consider how I love Your precepts; revive me, O Lord, according to Your lovingkindness.
160 The sum of Your word is truth, and every one of Your righteous ordinances is everlasting.

Message: Seeking God's Statutes

Time: The psalms were written by many different people across a period of a thousand years in Israel's history. They are thought to have been compiled and put together in their present form by some unknown editor shortly after the captivity ended about 537 B.C.

What the Lord is Saying: As I read through this passage the first time, on the heels of the last set of verses in Psalm 119 that spoke of the nearness of God and Your commandments are truth, and to know Your testimonies, the challenge here to me is to know the Word of God and it a light to my paths. But, again, in looking at that nearness and pondering it, the Word of God and God's Laws and his truths remain near to me. The true believer does not waiver in His beliefs because of difficult circumstances, but instead it makes him cling every more tightly to the truths and his total dependency on God. The way we got through affliction and how we are rescued is by not forgetting the Law and God redeems me. Set me right Lord, according to Your Word.

[Lord, I talk to many that are wanting out of circumstances they view bad or not of success, bring these people back to the Word of God so that they will see the truths and promises of what you have commanded and can then approach their circumstances in a new way. Daily, I walk with You Lord and throughout all of life's circumstances You breath life into them and you work them out for Your glory. I think of Derek and his smoking habit that he has gotten in at a young age. Lord, that has been a difficulty I wish on no one, yet through that challenge you reveal to me the importance of my relationship with my wife and with You, that I can remain committed to you and I must. And that these problems we have in our life are at the most basic level -- sin. And for any sin, I need to turn from it and recognize You as Savior and Lord. This is what I pray for My Son Derek, that he would know You as Savior and Lord. I pray that the truth of who you are would permeate his life so that he is defined by the truth of Gospel and his goal is to seek and follow You.]

[And, too, I look at my daughter, who is struggling with preparing for a wedding, while also navigating her own health challenges. Keep her on the right course. Give her hope and keep her instructed by Your word, and that you are fully capable of walking with her and healing her from this that ails her. Help her and Brandon to communicate better, not by text, but by talking. Cement that in their lives. Lord, we can thank you for these trials because you use them to align us more closely to You.]

In verse 155, I am reminded that Salvation is far from the wicked, for they do not seek Your statutes. The truth of who you are is far from those who daily practice wickedness. Wickedness is subtle in this world, not because sin is less clear, but society has made it less clear. I was looking at this article yesterday in the WSJ and it was addressing titles of books that are made up of curse words and the author of the article stated that society has now deemed those words less offensive and so they can be used as titles for book. Lord, it is disheartening to hear of how sin is changed in its definition and moved more and more to acceptable behavior. May that be not so in my life. Keep me on the course where my words do not even hint at caving and marching to the tune of society. People so often do not keep your statutes as this verse states and yet we act surprised that they don't therefore align with our principles. I find it so tragic because our view of ourselves and our view of sin is what helps us to see our need for a Savior. Lord, may you help people see the truth of their sin. May you bring to light sin in this life.

Great are Your mercies, O Lord; revive me according to Your ordinances. I Love this proclamation that the Mercies of God are great. Lord, you have had mercy on me a sinner, a law breaker, by allowing me to go free. Many are my persecutors and my adversaries, I do not turn aside from Your testimonies. Many are against me. That is the truth that we don't see because people present themselves like they agree with me, but many are my adversaries, but keep me charged and guided and not turned aside from Your testimonies. I behold the treacherous and loathe, because they do not keep Your word. I am saddened by those that do not keep your word. I have many, like Derek in London that spends his times denying you and not keeping your word and finds joy in religion washing away. Draw him to you. Help me be a lover of your precepts. Revive me (and him), O Lord, according to Your lovingkindness. It is your love that sets us free, your love for me from all eternity to know that I needed a Savior and substitute for my sin. The sum of Your word is truth, and every one of Your righteous ordinances is everlasting. You are truth and every one of your commands is everlasting.

Promise: The Law cannot save, but the Law does show us our need for a Savior.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for saving me and thank you for showing me my sin and my incredible need for You Lord, My Savior. Thank you for continually exposing the sin in my life and helping me see a sin of being unthankful or having anxiety or being discontent. Help me to accept and be content in any situation. Lord, I don't want to live in the realm that life is not complete unless I have freedom from financial situations, but true freedom is found in You Lord for you give peace in all circumstances.

Jesus Calling: November 28

Rest in the deep assurance of My unfailing Love. Let your body, mind, and spirit relax in My Presence. Release into My care anything that is troubling you, so that you can focus your full attention on Me. Be awed by the vast dimensions of My Love for you; wider, longer, higher, and deeper than anything you know. Rejoice that this marvelous Love is yours forever!
The best response to this glorious gift is a life steeped in thankfulness. Every time you thank Me, you acknowledge that I am your Lord and Provider. This is the proper stance for a child of God: receiving with thanksgiving. Bring Me the sacrifice of gratitude, and watch to see how much I bless you.

I Peter 5:7
English Standard Version
casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

Ephesians 3:16-19
English Standard Version
16 that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

Psalm 107:21-22
English Standard Version
21 Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
for his wondrous works to the children of man!
22 And let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving,
and tell of his deeds in songs of joy!

My Prayer
Lord I thank you for your steadfast Love. Lord, you do wondrous works in the lives of your children. I offer sacrifices of thanksgiving and praise you in songs of joy. I cast all of my anxieties upon you. You care for me. Thank you for caring for me. Thank you for strengthening me with power through your Spirit. I need Christ to dwell in my heart. I want my life to be rooted, grounded in love. I want to know the love of Christ and be filled with all the fullness of God. Help me to know what this means and be ready for it. Lord, I thank you.

Psalm 118:1-16 - God on Our Side

Psalm 118:1-16
1 Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; for His lovingkindness is everlasting.
Oh let Israel say, “His lovingkindness is everlasting.”
Oh let the house of Aaron say, “His lovingkindness is everlasting.”
Oh let those who fear the Lord say, “His lovingkindness is everlasting.”

From my distress I called upon the Lord; The Lord answered me and set me in a large place.
The Lord is for me; I will not fear; What can man do to me?
The Lord is for me among those who help me; Therefore I will look with satisfaction on those who hate me.
It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man.
It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes.

10 All nations surrounded me; In the name of the Lord I will surely cut them off.
11 They surrounded me, yes, they surrounded me; In the name of the Lord I will surely cut them off.
12 They surrounded me like bees; They were extinguished as a fire of thorns; In the name of the Lord I will surely cut them off.
13 You pushed me violently so that I was falling, But the Lord helped me.
14 The Lord is my strength and song, And He has become my salvation.

15 The sound of joyful shouting and salvation is in the tents of the righteous; The right hand of the Lord does valiantly.
16 The right hand of the Lord is exalted; The right hand of the Lord does valiantly.

Message: God on Our Side

Time: The psalms were written by many different people across a period of a thousand years in Israel's history. They are thought to have been compiled and put together in their present form by some unknown editor shortly after the captivity ended about 537 B.C.

What the Lord is Saying:

Theme's I see:
  • His lovingkindness is everlasting.
  • The Lord is for me.
  • Take refuge in the Lord
  • In the name of the Lord I will surely cut them off.
  • The Lord helped me.
  • The Lord is my strength and song.
  • The right hand of the Lord does valiantly.

It is easy to just focus on how God makes me or life better. We are a people of comfort and safety and sometimes I think we just stare at the benefits too quickly without seeing the condition. The condition is we are to be a people of God, serving Him, turning our lives over to Him, giving him the praise for all things, recognizing that we need a Savior, we need a Lord, we need a substitute for the sin that fills our lives. This is not about just saying we are a fan of a sports team that just won the championship. We can't just jump on the bandwagon and then think that all of life, for eternity, will work in our favor. We must be a people that live the faith, day in and day out. We must align ourselves to Him and trust in Him for all things, no matter what.

My position: This chapter starts with "Give thanks to the Lord." This is what the people of God do, thank God no matter what.

God's promise: "He is good." This is why I can give thanks to the Lord, for He is good. "His lovingkindness is everlasting." His love never changes. This is what I must stare at. He is a loving God. I don't stare at this just when things are going in my favor. I stare at all times. I need this reminder. May this be the outcry of Israel, the house of Aaron and all those who fear the Lord.

My position: verse 4, "Fear the Lord," verse 5, "call upon the Lord." Lord, help me to begin each day in this manner, fearing the Lord, calling upon the Lord. I want to come unto you God each day. Holy Spirit, bring into the presence of God.

God's promise: After calling on the Lord in verse 5-7, the promise is He will answer me. "The Lord is for me, I will not fear. What can man do to me? The Lord is for me among those who help me."

My position: verse 7, "Therefore I will look with satisfaction on those who hate me." - I will not hate those who hate. Do I see this? This flies in the faith of the competitive spirit which is bred in me with sports. We are not against each other. I am for you. I don't have to fear man, I only need to fear God. Man can't hurt me.

My position: verse 8 -  It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes. - This is key, again, I am not to trust in man nor princes nor leaders. Yes, I am to obey them. Romans 13:1 - Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God. I am to show my respect to the office of the president, my boss, the mayor, the governor, my pastor, the leaders over me, my father. This order has been set up by God. We are to have rulers over us, over me. This isn't a foreign concept, but my refuge is in the Lord. This is where I place my trust.

My position: verse 10 - All nations surrounded me; verse 11 - They surrounded me; verse 12 -
They surrounded me like bees. The situation is people are surrounding him. I am called to be a saint, a vessel, an instrument of the Lord. But being this is not always a popular thing. People have other agenda's. There are other priorities that are not of God.

God's promise: verse 10 - In the name of the Lord I will surely cut them off. Verse 11 - In the name of the Lord I will surely cut them off. Verse 12 - In the name of the Lord I will surely cut them off. My confidence remains in the Lord. The Lord is not simply my confidence or my refuge and the one I take satisfaction, and who I thank, but by his power, in His name, I can stand up against my enemies and those who don't represent him. In this tolerant world, we think that respecting us or allowing us to be is not surrounding us but no one can serve two masters. I need to have confidence in God's word and what he is saying. I need to rest in those words. Help me to put my blinders on Lord, and keep them focused on You, not other people, but only You.

My position: verse 13 - You pushed me violently so that I was falling. It is not clear the situation, but it is one of being surrounded, feeling attacked and then being attacked.

God's promise: verse 13 - But the Lord helped me. But through it all God is there. The Lord is who I have my strength in.

God's promise: verse 14 - The Lord is my strength and song; verse 15 - The right hand of the Lord does valiantly. verse 16 - The right hand of the Lord is exalted; The right hand of the Lord does valiantly. Help me to hold onto your words God.

Promise: I am to thank the Lord for deliverance from many difficulties. I am to believe with all my heart that God is fighting for me. God is sufficient in my times of trouble.

Psalm 117 - Praising the Lord's Faithful Love

Psalm 117
Praise the Lord, all nations;
Laud Him, all peoples!
For His lovingkindness is great toward us,
And the truth of the Lord is everlasting.
Praise the Lord!

Message: Praising the Lord's Faithful Love

Time: The psalms were written by many different people across a period of a thousand years in Israel's history. They are thought to have been compiled and put together in their present form by some unknown editor shortly after the captivity ended about 537 B.C.

What the Lord is Saying:

All nations are to praise the Lord. Everyone. This Psalm was obviously given to Israel and yet the call was to all nations. The goal was for all nations to Praise the Lord. This could have been a doxology or praise benediction in our service. Our church often does these before or at the end of a service. This would be a good one to do in a service.

As God's people, we have a responsibility before God to praise Him on behalf of all people and with the goal that all people will praise Him. If I think about it, praise dispels anger and jealousy. It has a powerful effect on people. We can see this and understand it. So, in turn we can understand that this is what we need to say to the Lord.

And why do we praise the Lord?

  • His Lovingkindness is great - his mercy, compassion and kindness is great towards us. God wants the best for us. And he sees what is best for us. Even when we do not see it, he knows. And this is why we praise Him because he acts toward us in a way that is great and just what we need.
  • The truth of the Lord is everlasting - what God has affirmed at any one time will always remain the same in all ages and in all lands. What was truth to Abraham is truth to us; what was truth to Paul is truth to us; what was truth to the martyrs is truth to us; what is truth to us will be truth to all generations of the world in all lands, and will be truth forever.
Note: This is the shortest chapter in the Bible and the middle of the Bible.

Promise: As in this chapter our lives and days should begin with "Praise the Lord!"

Psalm 106:6-48 - A Call for Us to Remember

Psalm 106:6-48
We have sinned like our fathers, we have committed iniquity, we have behaved wickedly. Our fathers in Egypt did not understand Your wonders; they did not remember Your abundant kindnesses, but rebelled by the sea, at the Red Sea. Nevertheless He saved them for the sake of His name, that He might make His power known. Thus He rebuked the Red Sea and it dried up, and He led them through the deeps, as through the wilderness. So He saved them from the hand of the one who hated them, and redeemed them from the hand of the enemy. The waters covered their adversaries; not one of them was left. Then they believed His words; they sang His praise. They quickly forgot His works; they did not wait for His counsel, but craved intensely in the wilderness, and tempted God in the desert. So He gave them their request, but sent a wasting disease among them. When they became envious of Moses in the camp, and of Aaron, the holy one of the Lordthe earth opened and swallowed up Dathan, and engulfed the company of Abiram. And a fire blazed up in their company; the flame consumed the wicked. They made a calf in Horeb and worshiped a molten image. Thus they exchanged their glory for the image of an ox that eats grass. They forgot God their Savior, who had done great things in Egypt, wonders in the land of Ham and awesome things by the Red Sea. Therefore He said that He would destroy them, had not Moses His chosen one stood in the breach before Him, to turn away His wrath from destroying them. Then they despised the pleasant land; they did not believe in His word, but grumbled in their tents; they did not listen to the voice of the LordTherefore He swore to them that He would cast them down in the wilderness, and that He would cast their seed among the nations and scatter them in the lands. They joined themselves also to Baal-peor, and ate sacrifices offered to the dead. Thus they provoked Him to anger with their deeds, and the plague broke out among them. Then Phinehas stood up and interposed, and so the plague was stayed. And it was reckoned to him for righteousness, to all generations forever. They also provoked Him to wrath at the waters of Meribah, so that it went hard with Moses on their account; because they were rebellious against His Spirit, he spoke rashly with his lips. They did not destroy the peoples, as the Lord commanded them, but they mingled with the nations and learned their practices, and served their idols, which became a snare to them. They even sacrificed their sons and their daughters to the demons, and shed innocent blood, the blood of their sons and their daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan; and the land was polluted with the blood. Thus they became unclean in their practices, and played the harlot in their deeds. Therefore the anger of the Lord was kindled against His people and He abhorred His inheritance. Then He gave them into the hand of the nations, and those who hated them ruled over them. Their enemies also oppressed them, and they were subdued under their power. Many times He would deliver them; they, however, were rebellious in their counsel, and so sank down in their iniquity. Nevertheless He looked upon their distress when He heard their cry; and He remembered His covenant for their sake, and relented according to the greatness of His lovingkindness. He also made them objects of compassion in the presence of all their captors. Save us, O Lord our God, and gather us from among the nations, to give thanks to Your holy name and glory in Your praise. Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, from everlasting even to everlasting. And let all the people say, “Amen.” Praise the Lord!

Message: A call for us to remember

Time: The psalms were written by many different people across a period of a thousand years in Israel's history. They are thought to have been compiled and put together in their present form by some unknown editor shortly after the captivity ended about 537 B.C.

What the Lord is Saying:

The words of the first 5 verses of Psalm 106 yesterday, in my reading, can basically be summed up with the proclamation that "God is great; His deeds are mighty; His ways are true; so God, show Your favor on us."

The beginning focus, from this Psalm, is on the greatness of God and the only reason He would show favor to us is because He is great. I was reminded yesterday of my need to speak of His greatness, but also to remember the things that He has done in my life. I began a writing in which I would document those things. I must remember. We must remember. Without remembering, we forget what has occurred and the blessings that we have received. They happen and occur constantly.

As a kid and even as I got older, I always the theme of that 80s song from Edin-Adahl singing, "Bring back the joy of my salvation." It was a stark reminder that I remember the thrill that I experienced embracing the Gospel and its reality upon my life.

The rest of this Psalm, is dark, as it speaks to a people that did not remember God. It begins with the memory that we sinned, repeating iniquity (We have sinned like our fathers), and yet God saved us in order to show His power (Nevertheless He saved them for the sake of His name), rescuing them from their foes (redeemed them from the hand of the enemy). For a moment, they believe and sang his praise, but then forgot, got selfish, and blamed God (tempted God in the desert). But they did not simply forget, but they replaced their Love for God with a Love for something else (They made a calf in Horeb and worshiped a molten image). God said He would destroy them, but Moses intervened. But they still did not surrender, but continued in their march away from God (They forgot God their Savior, who had done great things in Egypt) and a plague resulted and their doom was near; but then Phinehas intervened (Phinehas stood up and interposed, and so the plague was stayed). But they continued abandoning God and their descent continued (they mingled with the nations and learned their practices, and served their idols) and even as they spiraled down, He remembered His covenant with them (He remembered His covenant for their sake). We must praise God. Praise the Lord. He restores us and saves us despite our constant attempts to run the other way. We must stay close to Him and remember what we have received, and be thankful and not forget.

Promise: Remember what the Lord has done in my life. Don't forget.
