Jesus Calling: December 8

Your needs and My riches are a perfect fit. I never meant for you to be self-sufficient. Instead, I designed you to need Me not only for daily bread but also for fulfillment of deep yearnings. I carefully crafted your longings and feelings of incompleteness, to point you to Me. Therefore, do not try to bury or deny these feelings. Beware also of trying to pacify these longings with lesser gods: people, possessions, power.
Come to Me in all your neediness, with defenses down and with desire to be blessed. As you spend time in My Presence, your deepest longings are fulfilled. Rejoice in your neediness, which enables you to find intimate completion in Me.
Philippians 4:19
English Standard Version
And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

Colossians 2:2-3
English Standard Version
that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, to reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding and the knowledge of God's mystery, which is Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

My Prayer
Lord, you are my provider. Remind me that riches means much more than personal wealth but encompasses all aspects of the fruits of the Spirit, eternal life, peace, and rest. Jesus, Help Me. Surely you are in this place. So much of my world is focused on comfort, ease, entertainment, and enjoyment - to the point that sometimes I feel like I am not in need of You. But, keep me praising you and thanking you for everything in my life. Thank you for the encouragement you bring to life, even in the difficulties or rather especially in the difficulties. You have given me understanding and knowledge of You.

    1. This simple verse embodies all in today's reading and prayers. Thank you Jesus, replace my " I wants" with "I need You'". In your beautiful name I pray.

  2. I loved reading this devotion, the scriptures and your prayer. If these truths were hidden in my heart, it would have saved me much grief this week. I am a Case Manager and I see many, sad situations (many good ones too) and this week, one of my 'cases' passed away. I know the truth of God's Word for this person and that it's not 'the end of the story,' but the irony and details of this life left me so sad. I try to fill that sadness by doing more, giving more (often of my own need) and it left me empty and aching. God redeemed the time and energy and fulfilled me (in spite of myself), but had I stopped, before I tried to 'pacify these longings with lesser gods: people, possessions, power,' I would have saved myself much additional grief. I am thankful that I have a loving husband and adult children who understand me and help along the way, but too often I look to them to meet the needs that only Christ can meet. It isn't fair of me or prudent to expect people to meet the needs that only can be met by acting on the God in Christ in me! That day, God met my every need. Jesus comforted my heart and I was given an opportunity to grow, for which I'm thankful. Now, to ACT on those things BEFORE I waste time, energy, food; before I risk my own peacefulness...THAT will convince me that I'm maturing in His Word. Thank you once again, Payton Family for providing an avenue for me to read, fill my heart with God's Word and remember what Christ died to give me. May the pressures of this glorious season be overcome with the thankfulness of the Truth we have been taught. That is my prayer!

    1. Thank you, Noah’s Corner, for sharing your epiphany. Before you, Anonymous set before us the fundamental truth from Psalm 23 which expresses your experience, which states the truth of all of our lives. In the moments of life we allow the Lord to be our Shepherd, there will be nothing lacking. In the moments we make other people and things to be are “shepherd”, we will be left so unsatisfied. Blessings upon you, my sister in Christ!

    3. Norah’s Corner thank-you for sharing your heart. I really believe with all my heart that everything happens for a reason. All of our choices are woven together for our good. Romans 8:28. I had a situation a couple of months ago that made me feel worse about myself and that I wasted energy, but after going through it I see the refining fire I was in. I have had a breakthrough because of it. I am so thankful I made that choice even though some pain came from it. However, blessings of growth which wouldn’t have happened otherwise. came also. In our human frailty we have to realize God is God and He knows the choices we will make before we do. He already has the results we need for our own good. Not to say we should intentionally do things to cause us pain but when we do He still meets us where we are and helps us shed that part of us through it. If that makes any sense ♥️🙏

    4. Dearest Norah, Thank you for pouring out your heart to us. He is the only One who understands us perfectly, comforts us completely, loves us unconditionally. Your cases are God’s gifts to you, sent to test your faith. Jesus is with you as your constant guiding light as you help them. Our deaf family is supportive of us but they are not as great as our God. I’m sorry you have had to cope with the loss of some of your cases. I am sure your faith led them through the difficult moments. You are a dear bright light that no one can put out. Much love.
Amen Bob! All we need is our true Good Shepherd. No one else could ever take His place!

    5. Thanks Norah's Corner for telling the story on behalf of all of us who pass this way. Too often I also look to DH and Daughter to meet the needs that only Christ can meet. Too often, I try to 'pacify these longings with lesser gods: people, possessions, power, presents, etc., rather than 🎶 In Christ Alone I Place My Trust. My source of Strength, my Source of Hope is Christ Alone.

  3. The joke in our family is that Dad is the needy one. As I draw nearer to Jesus I realize that that neediness is not a joke. It is a proof that I am seeking relationships, especially in my family from my wife and my two teenage daughters, to fulfil me instead of going to the well, the infinite well of love and completeness in and through my relationship to My Savior Jesus Christ. As all of us well know this is a journey of breaking free from relying on the things of this world to fulfill us and moving ever closer to leaning on Jesus and being fulfilled in Him.

JC family, as you wait and also rejoice in your neediness which completes you in Christ Jesus, according to Isaiah 54:14, I declare unto you today and always that,
"In righteousness you shall be established; you shall be far from oppression, you shall not fear; and from terror, for it shall not come near you".
Don't stop praising and trusting the almighty God. He is all in all.

  9. Amen to your prayer and declaration, Maplewood! ALL needs ARE met, not through our toil and strain but according to our Father's glorious riches in Christ Jesus.
Reading about this time last year reminded me once again, that there is nothing new under the sun. Every year since my husband was sick, the Christmas activities threaten my peace. We lived in a constant 'waiting for the other shoe to drop,' mode. We'd make plans and have to cancel. I'd start food and get called away, only to watch it go to waste.
Bob and Chris' exhortation to remember the Lord is my Shepherd (not everyone else) and that sadness reminds us from whom our blessings flow, once again fits THIS year! My prayer to see spiritual maturity is continual and yet I do see improvement in that my bouts of frustration and sometimes depression, don't last as long. I heed the words of my JC Family which is THE Word and rest in the Lord, a little faster than years ago.
When I went to bed early last night in the midst of my Football Loving family's shouts for victory, I smiled and gave my concerns for tomorrow's event to Him. I woke up claiming His promises that today will be focused and thanking Him for ordering my steps this day so my heart is at peace.
The tangled web of future plans were untangled last night with honest communication with my family and I can give it all to Him, knowing our needs are met. I am determined to refuse the drama that is trying to creep in and apply His Word to each situation. Sassy Mom - your always-present reminder of what His hand has provided, calms me down.
Prayers for each of you and all of mine; the knowledge that a family that prays together, stays together, will slow me down enough to wait on the Lord.
Blessings to each of you this beautiful, cold Sunday morning. May our steps be ordered in His Word as we do one thing at a time and give thanks. My "I'm Thankful For..." list is growing and I'm committed to reviewing it often throughout this day and coming week.
Peace be with each of you,
    Norah

  10. The devotion today, as always, is a good reminder of what I need to focus on. "Your needs and my riches are a perfect fit". But I also need my JC family's prayers. My husband is having a biopsy tomorrow for a growth on his neck and we are all very worried about it. This comes after a long and difficult autumn with alot of changes in our lives. Please pray that this growth is benign and that the worst we have to deal with is the surgery to remove it.

  13. In today's society, being 'needy' has a negative connotation with undertones of being either high maintenance or not being able to take care of yourself. How ironic that this is the exact opposite of Jesus' teachings. "Rejoice in your neediness..." what a wonderful gift we have been given that our needs and His riches are a perfect fit.

  14. In all honesty, as I read today's devotional, I know it is right, but I also struggle with questioning it. I lean on Jesus and come to Him many times throughout each day, yet I keep finding myself wondering when things will "get better." I am asking for your prayers to keep me focused on Jesus and not let me fall into the valley of self pity. Sometimes I have trouble finding blessings in the hard times. I know things are not according to my time, but I am also human, and of course want them to get better quickly. Jesus, help me.

After problems in our marriage that I couldn't figure out or fix, we attended counseling. Fast forward several years, I discovered my husband was an alcoholic/addict. He is almost two years sober. I am aware that sobriety is a daily struggle for him, so, thank You God, for this victory! In the interim, it seemed our marriage had completely crumbled, so true healing needed to happen. Just over 7 months ago, my husband was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. I have a counselor, we are seeing a marriage therapist and I also attend Al-Anon and NAMI meetings. It has been an extremely difficult road on many levels. He was our main wage earner and hasn't had a job since this diagnosis. I am working, but my income doesn't pay all of our bills. My only son, from a previous marriage, is in the military, so I don't get to see him and his family as often as I'd like. When I see him, he brings my heart joy, so I cherish those times. I don't know what our "new normal" is going to be, as my husband is still trying to get to a more stable point in his life. It seems to me, he has switched addictions, and I have lost trust. He is getting help, but he needs to be open about the things he faces. Every day is a challenge for both of us, as I don't know what it will bring. I often feel like I am "walking on egg shells" in our home as I don't know what to expect. I raised my son as a Christian; I know he believes in God, but has stopped practicing, so he needs lots of prayers. My son's father abandoned him many years ago after being in his life for a while, but committed suicide a few years ago and my son has not truly dealt with it, so my heart aches for him. Things just seem "heavy" most of the time and I am physically and emotionally exhausted. Jesus, I trust in You. Help me. One day and moment at a time.

Thank you, JC Warriors, for making this seem like a safe place for me to share. I am hoping this share is a step for me in healing. Thank you, God for everything. Thank you for this JC Family. Amen. CO

    1. Lord, comfort. You know Lord the hurt of this world. We are not strong. We are weak. We want goodness, love, acceptance, to be understood, to be valued. And it hurts when we don't get these things. We are a people of love - you made us this way. Change how we think Lord.

Lord, I pray for my sister in Christ and that You would show her You are Her shepherd and because of this she will never be in need. You got this, all of this in her life. Let her rest in fields of green grass. Lead her to streams of peaceful water and refresh her life. Your name is true and you will lead her along the right path as you have been doing, leading her to a counselor to speak with. She is going through valley of shadows of death, but be her strength so she is not afraid. Raise her up. Make her feel safe. May kindness and love always be with her, each day of her life, as she lives in your house forever.

      Lord, comfort.

      Amen.

Even though you are going through this rough period, the Sweet Spirit the Lord placed in you shines out! Be encouraged because the JC WARRIORS will be storming THE THRONE OF GRACE and lifting up your circumstances. Always remember this formula: God's strength + your trust = VICTORY. A wise person once said; "Trust God's Word and His power more than you trust your own feelings and experiences. Remember, your Rock is Christ, and it is the sea that ebbs and flows with the tides, not Him." This is one of my favorite scriptures I keep in sight when things get tough; "I lift my eyes to the hills---where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. " Psalm 121:1-2 (NIV) GOD LOVES YOU--- And so do I! I'm off to THE THRONE OF GRACE!

I can only imagine how it must be to have a husband who is bipolar and also has had a drinking problem. I do understand the problems with having a husband who drinks. I pray every day my good man will surrender his life to Jesus and stop drinking or at least cut down a lot. I just don't understand why he has to drink every day. I like him so much better when he is sober. But I pray you have seen God's faithfulness in both your lives and things are going better. Thank You Jesus!

When you spoke of walking on egg shells and not knowing what would happen each day is exactly how I felt when my wife was having her “episodes”
I pray for you and hope you have found peace, I pray for myself to find peace...
It is so true that we are not alone....without God in my life I don’t know how I would have handled everything....
I don’t know what will happen with my marriage but what I do know is God will always be there if I allow him to be...

  22. Loving Father, Thank You for the blessings of this day. You have called me to be dependent on You alone. You are a Father who will not turn me away, but welcome me with open arms because You did not design me to be self-sufficient. Thank You for being a giver, for being so caring and so generous that You gave Your only Son to pay for my insurmountable and unpayable debt, yet still providing all my spiritual and physical needs. I thank You in Jesus’ name. Amen.

In the scripture, we learned that Paul accepted a generous gift from the Philippians with gratitude and joy. To Him, their generosity was a sacrifice, and an offering to the Lord. Because of their service and what they did, Paul had no doubt that the Lord would supply them with more than enough, overflow their lives with blessings and take care of all they stood in need of from the immense abundance and glorious riches of His love and mercy.
Out of His inexhaustible supply, God provides for those who provide for others. His promise to supply all our needs (Philippians 4:16), is not an unconditional promise, but a conditional one! However, Jesus warns His followers to be compassionate stewards in and to all He entrust them with, to be faithful and generous, not lazy, selfish or irresponsible, as in the Parable of the Talents and that of the unmerciful servant. God’s conditional promise is based on our walk of obedience and reflection of His generosity towards those in need.

May we be willing to step out in generous faith, and experience God’s promise to step in with His generous provision, because He has given us the gift of eternal life through faith in Christ Jesus. He’s given us a treasure beyond anything we could have ever imagined. He’s given us purpose, love, grace, fullness, satisfaction, contentment, and the power of His Spirit that lives in us!

    Blessings and Peace.

  30. Second Wednesday of Advent

I waited patiently for the LORD; He stooped down to me and heard my cry. (Psalm 40:1)

How are the particular hymns/carols being chosen for me to write about? I enter into my quiet time before the LORD and think of the love I have for you (if I don’t know you that well yet or even have not met you, it is love that will be either here or There). From that comes inspiration to write to you.

For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope (Jeremiah 29:11), a most popular and positive verse (especially for young people at graduation). But if you look at the whole context, the verse rests in, it is even more powerful. Here it is as paraphrased by Eugene Peterson in the Message.

Jeremiah 29:1-14 MSG - Plans to Give You the Future You Hope
    https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Jeremiah+29%3A1-14&version=MSG

In summary, what the LORD is saying is though the present times are not as you wish they would be, make the most of your circumstances and do not kick against them. Go about your daily lives and take care of what each day brings. Stop moping around, constantly complaining about how things are thus, making yourself miserable. In a word, be patient (root meaning, bear with the pain of the moment) for when the time of your present difficult circumstances has completed itself for the reasons I have established that make no sense to you, I will take you out of your misery and establish you in good ways again. Count on it! But in the meantime, practice the first sentence in Psalm 40:1 above, and then the second sentence will come to fruition.

What does impatience look like? Read Exodus 32, when the people of Israel lost patience with Moses in his delayed return from his mountain top experience with the LORD, they gave up on God and made a golden calf to worship. That is usually what happens when our patience has run out and we turn to something else to make ourselves feel good only to create more problems in our life.

Advent is a time to practice waiting...patiently. How strong are your patient muscles?

Though not an Advent hymn per se, an excellent example of healthy waiting.

  33. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. (2 Corinthians 9:8). Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put Me to the test, says the LORD of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need. (Malachi 3:10). But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. (Matthew 6:33).

  34. By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as He is so also are we in the world. (1 John 4:17). In the meantime, when so many thousands of the people had gathered together that they were trampling one another, he began to say to his disciples first, "Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. Therefore whatever you have said in the dark shall be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in private rooms shall be proclaimed on the housetops. "I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more than they can do. But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him!... (Luke 12:1-59).

  37. "Come to Me in all your neediness, with defenses down and with desire to be blessed"- from today's reading. This reminds me of the prayer of Jabez.
1 Chronicles 4:10: "And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that Thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that Thine hand might be with me, and that Thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested."
The prayer is composed of four parts. First, Jabez asks God to bless him. Second, he asks God to enlarge his territory or increase his responsibility. Third, he prays that God will be with him and stay close. Lastly, Jabez asks that God keep him from harm so that he will be free from harm.

The Prayer of Jabez: Why is it important?
The Prayer of Jabez reveals that Jabez understands what many people do not: there is only one God and He should be the center of our life. God wants to bless every life, but we must first make the choice to invite God into our life and ask for His blessings. Jabez wants to succeed and increase his sphere of influence for God. The specific sphere of influence is not important. What is important is that when we want to reach for goals and accomplishments that we are on God's side and have God on our side. Proverbs 16:3 says, "Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established." It is essential to understand and practice this in a close relationship with God. Further, it is equally important to stay close to God and rely on His continued support and guidance throughout life. Jabez clearly knows and prays specifically to the One who can protect him from evil and pain: God. At the end of the verse it is clear that God approved of this faithful prayer by granting it. Jabez was passionate in his plea to God: "He cried out to the God of Israel." God wants to hear that we need Him through passionate prayer. Passion is what motivates us to persevere. Persevering in our relationship with God especially when it's difficult to 'connect' or spend time alone with Him, is what He desires and what pleases Him. God heard and answered Jabez' prayer; just as surely He will hear and answer your prayer too. Be encouraged, press in to Him, keep pressing on.

  43. NEW PRAYER REUESRÈ61. A young married man with 2 kßids, who we have known for 20 years and is the son of our friends and who has a sister, who is our daughter's best friend, was arrested and given NO bond for very serious sexual charges. He has had some issues at times with drugs, but this is a shock to all. He is in a county jail.

I was with his father just yesterday, and he gave no hint of the issue which occurred late Monday. Our daughter called and told us that it had now hit the local news where we live. The dad and his family are strong Christians and I know all are heartbroken. Please pray for all and for wisdom. I know all have to be fearful of the son being jailed because often these type of arrests make the accused a target within the prison, and nevermind the emotional toll on the entire family. I hope to be a source of of compassion and an ear if he chooses to do so. Godspeed and let us count our blessings this Holiday season. AMEN.

Sharing my abundant blessings with my prayer Warrior Family. I am
so blessed! This morning I was overwhelmed with a spirit of heaviness and asked for prayer. Little did I know this day would bring blessings beyond words. Shortly after I asked for prayer a friend called to say she had a bag of apples and Mandarin oranges and wanted me to have them. I begin to receive unexpected messages from friends. This afternoon when I went to grocery store to get a few items, all the check out lanes were full with packed buggies. When I got in line the lady in front of me noticed I only had a few items, (her buggy was full and running over) and she told me to get in front of her. When I placed my items on the counter she told the cashier she was getting my order. This is the second time this has happened to me in a month.

Thank You Jesus for your blessings on me.

  52. Dear Jan, yours was the first prayer request I saw. So tragic. Prayers for all involved. That young man's wife and family, your son - all involved. We have lived this in our family and years later, it still lingers. Praying for deliverance for all involved. Then I saw your post, Dear MadFox. Please know you, your family, your friend's son, all involved are in my prayers. What a heartbreaking situation. Please God, bring deliverance!
Dear Sassy Mom - all I could think when I read hours later (from your first post), what we shared the other day - how quickly our prayers are being answered. My heart goes out to you, daily, especially during this season. I've had a heavy heart lately, at times, and have gone through NOTHING compared to you. Yet, God brought you Joy AND (may more importantly), YOU were willing to receive it. You are such a blessing to all of us. Continued prayers for you and your dear family.
My eyes are getting clearer every day and tomorrow I go back to my Eye Dr. I will be thankful to not be consumed with eye drops 5 x's a day while trying to work, wearing a patch at night and forgetting to NOT bend over for something or lift my little Granddoggie which I did today with no thought and then found out he weighs 52 lbs (limit is 15!). Thanking God for my DH, who was right there to pray for me and say, "It's ok, honey - God's got you!"
So thankful for each of you - to the point that at times my heart breaks as if it were ME in your situation. I know God has each of us in the Palms of His Hands. Just love you all so much.
Continued prayers for each of you.

  54. As Maplewood stated in an earlier crossover post...December is a great, special and wonderful month. A month in remembrance of our Savior’s birth, a month when HOPE and redemption came into the world, a month of jubilation, celebration, a month that will forever be cherished!
Today's devotion reminds us, Come to Me for HELP in all your neediness, with defenses down and with desire to be blessed...
To celebrate the 8th day of this celebratory month, I plan to give Jesus "H" gifts of
HELPING HEARTS (including my own)to HOPE in HIM and look for HIS HIDDEN treasures!

  55. Thank Brie! He is our Helper and our Hero!! And He is HERE. Just wanted to give you and our dear JC Family a reason to be thankful and rejoice. The Eye doctor said there are no more tumors in my eye areas and my vision is good and she said my mom’s eyes are doing well. No more double vision. Thanks for your prayers. We serve a faithful God!
Need more prayers! My dear friend Emilio is back in the hospital. His blood test shows high white blood cells and the doctors don’t know why. His kidney transplant had gone well but something is wrong. Thanks for your prayers.
