Proverbs 27:2 - Praise from Others

Proverbs 27:2
Let another praise you, and not your own mouth;
A stranger, and not your own lips.

Message: Praise from Others

Time: It seems that Proverbs was written and then compiled sometime between the tenth and sixth centuries B.C. Proverbs was probably written during the reign of Solomon, 971-931 B.C.

What the Lord is Saying:

Wise people do not praise themselves, they let others extol their virtues.

Do I ever go out of my way to communicate to others that I have succeeded?

Rev. Joseph Benson Commentary -  Except it be really necessary, either for thy own just vindication, or for the honour of God, or for the edification of others, in which cases this hath been allowed and practised by wise and virtuous men.

Matthew Henry Commentary - There may be occasion for us to justify ourselves, but not to praise ourselves.

Albert Barnes Commentary - Praise to be worth anything must be altogether independent.

Proverbs 15:25
The Lord will tear down the house of the proud,
But He will establish the boundary of the widow.

Ecclesiastes 7:8
The end of a matter is better than its beginning;
Patience of spirit is better than haughtiness of spirit.

Jeremiah 50:31
“Behold, I am against you, O arrogant one,”
Declares the Lord God of hosts,
“For your day has come,
The time when I will punish you.

Promise: Reject self-trust and rely on Him for salvation.
